As a 70s rocker I was glad to see 90s grunge save rock and roll.

Chris wrote the song with The Beatles Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band album. So it sounds Psychedelic because his favorite bands were Th Beatles. Steppenwolf. Black Sabbath. Pink Floyd.

Chris was also lead for Temple of the Dog. Say Hello to Heaven was Chris alone with Temple. Hunger Strike was Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam). Chris also did a version of Nothing Compares to You. So much music out there from Chris, but you had to follow all the bands he was in plus his solo projects to keep up.

Keep it up, man. Loving your approach. Dig deeper into Soundgarden. You've been watching the later, more polished material. Go back to where they started. "Jesus Christ Pose", "Rusty Cage", or "Outshined" need to be on your list. Be safe, man.

Amen! Back when they were all babies. Cornell's range is on par with opera. To hear that young man, of Blackfoot decent, sing about "Jesus Christ Pose" is beautiful angry brilliance. Coming from a Basque woman married to a PROUD Cherokee man. Still feel and see the hole left in music..

I completely agree with the comment about Outshined! I’m a Soundgarden fan from the ‘old days’ and Outshined is still my favourite song of theirs! It rocks so hard!

Always appreciate your analytical and emotional reactions. This happens to be my favorite Soundgarden song. The chords and the tempo are definitely on the dark side. (back in the day it was called HEAVY rock) But the perfection of this recording is uplifting to me. You don't need more suggestions, Señor. I'm just gonna listen.

Love Chris Cornell's voice. If you get a chance check out his covers of the songs Billie Jean and Nothing Compares To You. Both are amazing. I prefer them over the originals. Great reaction!! 🙂

❤everything Chris did! Usually deep lyrics but this one came to him while driving a in a car. Check out Slaves and Bulldozers, Burden in My Hand, The Day I tried to Live. He did a lot of acoustic stuff to which is my favorite. He’s best live. 😊

Looking back now, Chris Cornell was always struggling w/ depression even back in his career w/ Soundgarden... 'Black hole Sun' was a huge hit on MTV and radio in 1994/ '95 and the album 'Superunknown' sold 6 million copies in the US alone. I think the song is about a black hole destroying everything in armageddon... He is basically wishing for the end... The other songs on the record also carried the topic of bleak perspective - 'The day I tried to live' ... 'Like suicide' ... 'Let me drown' ... 'Fell on black days'... It was perfect for the 90's grunge rock scene, which was lyrically morbid, from Nirvana to Pearl Jam to Soundgarden to Bush...

I like how you do your homework about the artists n all that, you go the extra mile, instead of just reacting to a song n move on you show appreciation for the artists that way, that's awesome. Since you respect n like Chris I'd recommend the songs, with Audioslave, I am the Highway, Show me how to live (this one specially shows Chris' vocal power)

To stay in the Soundgarden lane, Spoonman was a super hit from the album.

I agree ☺️Spoonman one of my all time favorites songs from Soundgarden and the story behind spoonman himself. I lived in Seattle for a short time during this time and saw spoonman in person he was a street entertainer as many people know. I’m so happy Chris had him in his video. I loved this rock grunge era and so happy I could experience the Seattle vibe at the time, from music to fashion. I remember walking downtown Seattle and around broadway there were flyers stapled to light post back then advertising their concerts a time before cell phones and social media. The fire department would come by weekly to take down the posters and flyer’s because they were considered a fire hazard. The good’ol days 😇🙏

Chris said the lyrics don't really have a meaning, it was just stream of consciousness and word play for the sake of making it fit within the song. The title came from a news story he misheard, but thought it'd make a cool song title. Keep exploring everything Chris Cornell, you won't be disappointed.

Keep up your research!🤘🏻 He is of Blackfoot Nation decent. He has the range of an operatic vocalist. He is so very missed. "Jesus Christ Pose" or solo work; all brilliant. "Pillow of Your Bones" and "The Promise" causes a lot of ugly crying,no lie. *black hole sun often slang reference for a syringe hole from drug use;usually heroin*

He lost several friends from other bands to heroin. "No one sings like you anymore". Temple of The Dog all Seattle based musicians & singers friends w/late singer of Mother Lovebone

My thoughts were always that it was someone wishing for the end of the world. It definitely has a sad song with happy sound thing going on. Maybe it's someone learning to "dance in the rain," to borrow from a Megadeth song.

I think you nailed it in your reaction. Although Chris kinda claimed it was something of a word salad that he played around with, that didnt mean all that much. i think the reality is what you were alluding to. Like all great songwriters, Chris Cornell might have been playing with words but his inspirations ran deep, so he drew from these inner places inside himself. He had claimed that he wrote this song quickly... basically threw the bulk of it together in one day after hearing something misquoted on the radio that gave him his initial inspiration. Yeah it is depressing, as are quite a few of his songs.. however I hope that doesnt dettur you from checking out more. This was still rather early in his career and he evolved more as a singer, songwriter as time went on, and a lot of his accoustic work is fantastic , Euphoria Mourning Album, Higher Truth and some of his Song Book stuff is different. Ive learned to appreciate his ability with musical araingement as well... although many of his songs might seem simple.. the way he designed them for his own vocal ability i find amazing..along with the lyrical meanings. Believe it or not he started out as the Drummer for Soundgarden! and that was his inspiration. He had a troubled youth for a while there, suffering with agoraphobia not leaving the house for a couple years, but his mom helped him out by buying him a single snare drum!

I (0's music was very good but very very depressing and this is why I did not follow 90's music. There is always that undertone dark element of society being fake and not authentic and living in denial!!! That was the theme of 90's music!!! However, the music was very Top Tier!!!
