They got to #1 with an album full of odd time signatures, inventive songwriting, and some of the heaviest off kilter grooves that only tangentially connect them to grunge and didn't get lost in the shuffle of 90s/00s Rock with multiple hits that stayed on the radio even when they were broken up and the rock landscape changed, I'd call that potential reached. They were never meant to be big chart toppers like Nirvana, only be who they were, and that can't be as easily sold as 12 fun pop grunge tunes can.

They were a big, big band. Part of the break up was personal for Chris. Try Rusty Cage. The hypnotic or repetitive nature is exactly what he intended for this song, about depression, and how monotone your days become.

this video is special because it is a LIVE recording. They dont dub the album cut over the pictures, what sound you get is the sound they made at that time. Plus, no vocal mix tricks, its all them.

They were big in the mid 90s, but as impactful as the grunge movement was it was also short lived. By the late 90s pop music completely overtook the airwaves so those legendary grunge bands had a short window. BTW, you don’t talk too much. You got a sub from me because I enjoy the history as much as the music.

What breaks my heart is that Chris started in the Grunge era and became so much more. Having fought many demons myself over the years I always wanted those talented humans who put my thoughts into words and songs to overcome the struggles and still be with us today. But mental illness is no joke and if you have dealt with it for years and can no longer fight than my only wish for you is peace and to not be in pain anymore. ❤

Grunge has always revolved around a message or a story that is pretty heavy in it's content. Whether it's depression, or anger, or social/civil problems that extend far beyond just an individual. It's angst and emotion put to sound and melody. Try the song "Limo Wreck" to REALLY feel that.

Soundgarden is what he is known for the most! The rest is after the fact but still great! Chris joined as the drummer ..they had no idea how much of an amazing singer he was until he sang to keep it going when their singer was either fired or quit! They are one of the BIG 4 who changed the modern music scene...Seattle Grunge movement..way more than a hotbed! By the way, this isn't the original audio we know either. The version that uses the album cover as pic..is the ORIGINAL audio.

For future Soundgarden reviews (because I KNOW there's gonna be more), Kim's last name is pronounced like "sail", but with a soft "th". Hiro's name IS pronounced "hero" (or, more accurately, "HEE-do" in Japanese). This was my theme song back in 1999 that I played on a loop for hours. Also, it's YOUR channel. Never apologize for "talking too much"! If someone wants to hear the song without talking, they're MORE than welcome --capable, tho, I dunno -- of clicking the song link.

Actually that was one of several refreshing things about Soundgarden, ego just never was a thing, even when they broke up. They all just kind of looked at each other and said "yeah this thing is over, we've said it all", and broke up because they saw what the pressure to constantly produce radio hits had done to others, including Cobain just a couple years prior. Cornell just described the feeling of the breakup as being one of relief for all of them, with no bad vibes. Hence why their getting back together years later had zero shittiness or awkwardness, they just jammed and it felt good and proceeded from there. Grunge seemed to be light on the ego thing anyways.

Nah dude, you need to go back further. This is later Soundgarden, and it's pretty mellow. You wanna hear Chris, hit "Loud Love", "Slaves And Bulldozers", or "Jesus Christ Pose". Also, Temple Of The Dog's "Say Hello 2 Heaven", "Call Me A Dog", or "Pushin Forward Back"

Please check these out and see what you think. RIP...CC

A lot grunge and alt-rock as styles are thematically about the despair of being isolated in a packed place like a suburb. Being high for it is kind of the bittersweet edge on a lot of this music if you've ever felt that hopeless nihilism.

Soundgarden was huge in the 90's... this 1994 album 'Superunknown' sold 6 million copies in the US alone 👍Their 1991 single 'Rusty cage' was even covered by the country legend - Johnny Cash 😲This line-up of Soundgarden was stable from 1991 to 1997, and then 2012 to Chris Cornell's death in 2017: Chris Cornell (vocals + guitar), Kim Thayil (lead guitar), Matt Cameron (drums) and Ben Shepherd (bass). But like most of the Seattle bands that broke big in the 90's (Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Candlebox, Pearl Jam, Hole, etc.)... drug abuse played a big part in their decline and demise... Bands outside Seattle that rode the 'grunge rock' genre to fame (Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, Monster Magnet, L7, Veruca Salt, etc.) suffered the same fate... 😪 There were a few Seattle bands that did not break big, but had commendable music - Screaming Trees, Melvins, Tad, Mother Love Bone, etc. There were personal problems w/ Chris Cornell going back to the 90's, involving depression and drug abuse... He was an incredible talent on vocals, but some nights... he was terrible in concert... The band was not faring any better... I think when Soundgarden was touring in 1996/ '97 for the album 'Down on the upside' (it sold 1 million copies in the US)... the bad nights and technical issues playing live were getting worse (Bassist Ben Shepherd got frustrated and walked off stage at 1 show). Soundgarden announced their breakup in 1997... Chris Cornell released his first solo album 'Euphoria morning' in 1999, and had a single "Can't change me"... but the record did not sell up to expectations. He joined Audioslave soon after... When Soundgarden got back together in 2012, they got a single (and video) on the "Marvel's Avengers" movie soundtrack ('Live to rise') and soon released their comeback album 'King Animal' that year. Unfortunately, the same issues that plagued Soundgarden reportedly affected the band as they wrote songs for a new record and toured... Some nights, Chris Cornell was awful and it showed on fans' RU-vid videos... The last show Soundgarden played in Detroit in 2017, Cornell was incredibly upset and his wife raised the alarm after he hung up on her on the phone... He was found dead in his hotel room after he had barricaded himself in. That was the end of Soundgarden. It's unfortunate that so many talented singers from the 90's met their demise because of drugs and addiction - Andrew Wood (Mother Love Bone), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon), Bradley Nowell (Sublime)... R.I.P.

Rusty Cage, Slaves and Bulldozers, Spoonman, Searching With My Good Eye Closed, Black Hole Sun (their biggest hit but overplayed), Blow Up the Outside World, The Day I Tried To Live, and Mailman are all great songs. Temple of the Dog songs you have to check out if you love Chris: Say Hello to Heaven, Times of Trouble, Reach Down, Hunger Strike. Solo pieces to check out: live performance of When Hope and Promise Fade, studio jam session performance of Seasons, live performance in 2010 of When I’m Down at the Troubadour.

Seattle was the place to be as a musician in the early 90's. Much like Nashville is today but Nashville is experiencing a second breath of air. Seattle in the 90's was the Johnny Cash, dolly pardon and Elvis days of the 70's. Nashville today is rock country for that very reason.

I don't think grunge is depressing at all. It resonates so strongly. I've been fortunate to see Soundgarden many times, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains...but never Nirvana. When it comes to bands that were innovative and actually played music, the late 60' and 70's were unique and nothing will ever come close to all the amazing styles and just an endless number of bands. Then the 80's seemed to be the end of it all. The hair bands as they called it, or pop metal destroyed it. There were still a number a great bands, but a fraction compared to what I grew up with. I ended up really getting into the hip hop, old school now. Positive, fun, funny, never be that again. Then the 90's came along and I felt I was hearing great bands like these guys all over again with the same innovative musical talent of the 70's, and taking it to it's next level. The only thing I found not so great in so many fantastic sounding bands was this cloud of negatitvity, depression. Not really sure why, but it was the only thing I wished wasn't so much there, but I got into them all. And nearly like the 70's, just too many to list. It seems imo the internet and other factors ruined all music. Imo, around 2005 was the death of hearing great music all the time. I know there's some good bands out there, but not like those two decades basically. And not easy to find. I'm an older dude now and really miss the radio where you could find anything you wanted. And the record shops. Only those that experienced that can understand. Anything you wanted was there. And if one place didn't have it, the other would. But enough of that. Soundgarden was unbelievable and Chris left too early. The best always seem to do. You can go all the way back to Hendrix and Janis and draw a line to today. I offer no explanation except it sucks.

😭💭 It's ok.. You can say it.. So much talent was wasted when all the greats died too soon 💔 And the reason why the depressing grunge movement happened was bc, all these hair bands (which I love) but, they were all singing about sexy women and fast cars, lots of money, and partying, and folks like Chris, Chester and Layne, felt like life wasn't always one big happy, fantasy. They wanted tell stories about real life. It's not always flashy and sweet. I'm just telling you what they said. I personally love love love grunge with all my heart. But there's nothing wrong with wanting to put on AC/DC or Bon Jovi and feeling energized with some happy tunes!! 😁🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸

I believe grunge rock was the 90's backlash to the excess of the 80's... In 1989, the music industry was churning out bands that all looked the same - big hair, makeup, glam costumes, songs about girls and partying... There was a lot of great music, but the image was becoming more important than the substance. That same year, u had Nirvana and Soundgarden release albums did not sound anything like Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, Poison or Skid Row... it was raw and real... heavy and under-produced... and the lyrics were about personal turmoil and struggles. By 1990, that sound was starting to take off as rock music got heavier and more real... Alice In Chains, Pantera, and Jane's Addiction were starting to take off commercially. It just needed an ignition spark to make it big. That came in the Fall of 1991 when Nirvana's 'Smells like teen spirit' became a huge hit and an anthem for the 90's generation of rock fans... They couldn't relate to Poison's "Nothin' but a good time" ... or Ratt's "Loving you is a dirty job"... anymore... They wanted the dark, heavy lyrics that spoke to them... and they wanted to rage. All of a sudden, bands like Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, etc... band that were never given a chance, were suddenly in demand! MTV and radio could not sell 80's bands like Kix, Bang Tango, Enuff Znuff, or Warrant any more in 1992... the demand had dried up, so they focused on new bands that sounded more 90's, and that began the 'alternative rock trend... R.E.M, Soul Asylum, Radiohead, Tool, Candlebox, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots etc. were suddenly booming in 1993, while 80's bands were ridiculed and banished from radio and MTV airplay.

Unlike A LOT of Reactors (I've seen) at least you have something interesting to say.

It's a great shame that so many black people in America don't think of rock (and metal) music as soulful. They are missing out.

I have to disagree. The best of the best are never what is popular. What's popular, especially no-a-days, is what's heavily promoted by the label. People hear it so much they eventually give in and think they like it.

Your pain is felt by all of us. He is missed and was in my opinion one of the most prolific singer/songwriters in many generations! Glad that you get it and his deepest and best work was with Soundgarden! Gotta check out the OG masterpieces from them if you haven't by now.
