Callas is the only great singer in this video.

They were all good, and Maria Callas is a legendary singer, but Amira Willighagen's singing is sublime, especially given how young she is. When I watch her sing, I'm moved to tears.

Really loved your reactions to Amira, at that age and not hint of being nervous and such volume, the Lord has truly blessed this young girl and she will be used to touch many souls as she grows and continues to touch the hearts of many.

I love all three of these performer, but if I had to choose one to listen to over and over again, it would be Amira

Amira was Only 9 nine years old on this tape, she was just beginning to sing in public. It's unjust to compare her to seasoned mature singer! But, even as a child, Amira is the Best of all!

Look at the expression on her face just before she begins to sing. She just knows that she's about to open her mouth and blow this 10,000+ audience out of their seats.

Every performance is different. I have even seen Pavarotti with a mic, when not in a opera house. Amira's performance outside in front of nearly 12-15,000 people. Plus she is young. Maybe the mic protects he voice while growing up. Like all three people, but prefer Amira. She adds so much heart to the performances. Just my opinion.

This is an excellent comparison of the great Sopranos Sissel and Callas and the new youngster Amira. Both Sissel and Callas sing the piece at the end as it is written. Callas uses a slightly faster tempo. For the ending Amira goes up an octave. But for any fair minded person evaluating these performances there is only one conclusion possible.....omg....with advancing years, experience, and technical training Amira may finally rank as the finest Soprano of all time.

For my money Amira is far and away the best singer in every category. Did either of the other two have such capabilities at nine years old and display such a natural god-given talent? Well, show me the proof.

There are female singers all over the world who are good at singing, but even among them, Amira is not a singer created by humans. People are fascinated and get goosebumps and shed tears. She Amira is special.

Maria Callas actually plays the part and creates a great performance. Sissel has a pure, beautiful voice and I think Amira is on the road to that level, if not beyond it.

Hello, Alex 🙂 I enjoyed this reaction very much. And I loved your reaction to Amira♥ It's something very special when young children are able to sing so beautifully. Learning by watching RU-vid.. just the thought of that is crazy 🙂 The word prodigy comes to mind again, just like with Angelina. I heard that the tempo of Maria Callas' and Sissel's performances were very different. Sissel had much more prolonged notes, and she sang it the way I am most familiar with. Sissel is not primarily an opera singer, and I'm not even sure if she has received any formal classical training. I guess she MUST have, right, to be able to sing like this, but like I said, it's not her bread and butter. Tomorrow I will listen to Maria Callas in my car, just to be exposed to some more from her 🙂 I have not been listening to a lot of opera, but my father was a great fan of Pavarotti, so I heard a lot by him. I totally agree with you in that he is in a league of his own. R.I.P. I have also been listening a lot to Andrea Bocelli, who also in my mind is right up there. I have always been facinated by just HOW seemingly effortlessly he is singing. I have never seen any sign of tension in his face or body (his hands and fingers are always TOTALLY relaxed) when he hits the power notes. All of them were so great but Sissel was the only one by body, face and voice made me 'FEEL' the meaning of the song. My vote: Sissel

She sounds like the teenager the character is and does not give the song the heavy dramatic quality too many sopranos do, rather more of a playful pleading to her father. Maria Callas, as usual, is singing too sharp, which is as bad or worse than singing flat, and has the irritating nasal quality and wobbly vibrato. Finally Amira Willighagen sounds nice for the child singer she was at the time, but definitely NOT adult quality. I'm not sure if she understands what she is singing, so while it is pretty the correct pouty emotion is not there and she does not have good breath support.

Nice video enjoyed a lot. At the end you talk about Pavarotti and that you haven't heard a singer who comes close to him. you should hear Jonathan Antoine , he and a friend participated in Britian Got Talent under the name Charlotte and Jonathan . It gave me goosebumps.

How on earth can someone make a comparison of this nice young lady with Callas? How can someone be so ignorant of doing this to this young lady? She will never be Callas or Caballé, or Sutherland, or Price, etc. She doesn't even approaches to Callas, She is not an opera singer, with this kind of videos, what this people are doing is destroying music and make this poor young lady think that she is up to that level of quality. This is a total shame for not saying something more rude.

Overall, Callas did the best. On a technical and artistic standpoint, she has a greater set of skills and understanding of this song. She had perfect diction and understanding of the lyrics, not to mention, she sang the aria without a mic, while Sissel and Amira used mics, as they don't have a developed squillo. Sissel and Amira's native languages are Germanic (Norwegian and Dutch respectively), so their voiced (G, B, D) and voiceless consonants (C, P, T) tend to be very aspirated compared to the Italian voiced (G, B, D) and voiceless consonants (C, P, T). In Romance languages, these consonants tend to be much softer, with little to no aspiration. Amira and Sissel also fail to pronounce some double consonants properly, such as in baBBino, and note that Callas adds portamento in that syllable, demonstrating more advanced tricks. Italian is full of double consonants. So babino vs babbino, belo vs bello, rosa vs rossa, strugo vs struggo, anelo vs anello, vechio vs vecchio, butarmi vs buttarmi, vorei vs vorrei, babo vs babbo, amasi vs amassi are not pronounced the same way. There are some instances where Sissel pronounces a double R instead of a single R in morir (she goes morrir), which kinda sounds harsh at her delicate ending. Amira also forgot some of the lines in that song, singing just gibberish. There are also two O and E sounds in Italian, which Amira and Sissel fail to properly use in some instances. Then you have to consider the lyrics. Callas clearly understands what she is singing, as she emotes the proper facial expressions to the lyrics at the corresponding time of the song. For example, she keeps a smile throughout the first half of the song, as she evokes Lauretta's state of infatuation, professing her love for Runiccio to her father Gianni Schicchi. Not only visually, but audibly as well, as heard by that portamento at 8:05, and the first explosive bello, while Sissel and Amira go for a more ethereal bello. Then at 8:33, Callas transitions her facial expression from joy and excitement to worry and pain, overlooking at the distance while saying that she will go the Old Bridge (Ponte Vecchio) to kill herself if her father refuses to give his blessings for her marriage. Then at 9:02, she really softens up, begging God (O Dio = Oh God), while looking up at the sky with teary eyes. And hear 9:08, she uses her breathing to add a gasp, while continuing with Vorrei morir (I'd want to die), adding portamento in that first syllable of morir to imitate the shakiness of a weeping voice, all while transitioning from her looking up to looking down at the ground (her grave). There is so much one can dissect, both visually and audibly, in a Callas performance. She was so nuanced and meticulous with her details, that you can decipher so much symbolism in her performance. That is part of the genius of Callas. And note, that this aria suits the voices of Amira and Sissel better, as they are more velvety and lighter like true lyric sopranos, while Callas had a very dark and heavy dramatic voice, and her voice was a shell of its true self by this time of this performance.

To judge any singer is largely subjective, the 99% of people who are listening to enjoy the moment and not over analyzing ever aspect are appreciating amira for her musical knowledge, breath control and her lung capacity for such a young age... my opinion I've never heard better

It is easy hear one of them is a trained opera singer. It is the one with the over bloated sound.

I expected to hear a big difference because Amira was just a child and voice not yet trained or developed but no she sounded amazing and not a discernable difference.... she's incredible

Callas... Perfect technically but I didn't experience ANY of the FEELINGS that Sissel brought. This is a teenager pleading with her father and Callas sang it without emotion. AMIRA? Great respect but needs years more seasoning. She already sings better than 90% of singers out there but doesn't seem to have the range for a true mezzosoprano like Sissel. My vote goes hands-down for Sissel.
