First-Time Reaction to Dreamcatcher "Boca" MV 

You are correct to focus on the line "Too many angels dying now." There had been several suicides among prominent Kpop idols prior to this song coming - Jonghyun of Shinee, Sulli of f(x) and Goo Hara of Kara. Sulli had been especially subject to online bullying (and worse), and this song is commenting on that.

This song came out of the deaths of two well known Kpop artists and close friends, Sulli (Choi Jinri) and Goo Hara, who were bullied relentlessly online to the point that Sulli took her own life followed a month later by Hara. A mutual friend of Sua (who sang the angels line) and Sulli adopted her cat after Sulli died so the song is very personal for Sua. Sulli and Hara both rebelled against the traditional role of women in Korean culture and were viciously attacked online because of that. People in Western countries are quite resistant to being attacked online, but in Korean culture such attacks are deeply shameful and can be fatal to people who are isolated and have fragile natures. After Hara's death her absentee mother popped up and claimed part of her estate. The South Korean government passed Goo Hara's Law which prevents such things from ever happening in the future. Things are changing but it's a slow process since South Korea has only been a modern country for about 70 years and a democracy only since 1987. Traditional culture is still very strong.

Boca means "mouth" in Spanish and Portuguese and is part 2 of the Dystopia trilogy, which deals with bullying and hate comments, in particular the online variant ("A trick behind a mask, a ridiculous freak" from Scream). Boca has the lines "Why do you fill your precious time with hate" and "Too many angels dying now", which points to the effects those comments can have. Several Kpop idols have committed suicide in recent years, most likely because of cyber-bullying, but this is also about all the unnamed people who suffer from online bullies. A girlgroup tackling such a subject impresses the hell out of me. They literally go to war in this video and tell haters to go and shut their "Boca" in the lyrics. And the song is absolutely awesome! Who said you can't have three different musical genres in one song?

Ever since I first listened to Boca one of the lines who makes me have goosebumps the most is "Where is the love?" in the chorus. Something about this line sounds so desperate, as if someone is begging for a bit of peace.

Awesome! With 'Odd Eye', you will finally get to meet Han Dong, the group's only foreign member. She had FINALLY returned to Korea after almost a year (something like 8 or 9 months) having been caught in one of the world's longest and most strict lock-downs (the apparent epicenter of the release of the creepin' crudd plague, Wuhan, China). Han Dong had a difficult time in Wuhan, for some obvious and some not-so-obvious reasons. While she was gone, she made reaction videos of her own, watching what DC was doing without her. All of the members would constantly bring up Dongie's absence at shows and in their Live broadcasts. Because she had it pretty rough and had to do things all on her own for the first time, she came back a changed woman. She is not nearly so timid as she had been before she went home. She IS STILL an Introvert to be sure, but she is much more confident in herself after returning. EVERYBODY was so happy to see her! We did not get to see any video of her finally being re-introduced to the people at the company after her two-week quarantine in SK. I imagine it was tear-filled all the way around (members, the CEO and crew included). It is totally fine for them to have a private moment like that, I totally get it. They would not need to share any video from that day because we can imagine the scene just fine. But the entire fandom threw parties around the world in order to celebrate. Dongie did a Live afterward and of course each of the other ladies got a chance to talk with her on camera (without tears, so I am sure they had cried it out beforehand). You can tell they all really missed her, but Gahyeon's case is slightly different and more special. Gahyeon and Han Dong share a room at the dorm so Gahyeon was even more lonely than the rest, suddenly having the room all to herself. Dongie and Gahyeon's reactions and hanging out after the return are slightly more goofy than most of the rest. They pick on each other like sisters, but they are also very loving, of course. This group in general is so POSITIVE, it's just one of many reasons why they have become my Ult Group. :)

7:34 the line "Too many angels dying now" refers to several suicides in the scene that occurred around that time, possibly triggered or encouraged by online hate on social media. Even if you tell yourself "I'm not reading this" or "I don't care"...it has an effect on the person you treat that way. And there may come a point where you are at the end and can no longer find a way out. SuA, who sings the line, has lost someone this way herself

Lot of texture and layers to their music…. Beautiful angelic voices, badass rap lines, catchy melodies, guitar/drum/bass.

This is why I'm not totally against the harsh treatment that trainees experience. It may seem cruel, especially when they're just kids. But if you think about it, if they can't handle negative comments from one or two people, then how would they respond to such negativity from thousands or even millions of people? The training program is a boot camp of sorts designed to prepare you both physically and mentally for life as an idol, which as we all see often comes at a steep price.

dreamcatcher \:D/ the dystopia trilogy was probably inspired by a series of high profile idol suicides in the years preceding its release. dreamcatcher song usually have some social commentary and/or uplifting self-motivating messages. the 'apocalypse' trilogy addresses mankind's destructive nature but ends with a positive message that humanity will find a way to fix things. one thing you have to keep in mind about kpop is that most of the fan base are teenagers. just from personal experience lol, I said and did some pretty dumb things as a teenager but obviously not to the degree of malice. in other cases when you combine just mean spirited nature with immaturity, you can get some toxic stuff. if you haven't noticed, kpop companies debut idols as young as 13-14 nowadays so you know their target audience. this is part of the reason why dreamcatcher isn't that popular among kpop groups and almost unknown even in korea. not only is rock not popular in korea, but their average age is in the upper 20s so they don't have the same appeal among the general kpop audience.

I don't know if you realized that at the end of the first chorus, the song has a 16-second sustained Bass note. It is so effective. They are so creative with their instrumentals and writing. It may be bold to say, but if DC keeps going they way they are, they just might be the 1st K-Pop group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Seeing them perform with a live band is even more powerful. Thanks Guys!

They were known as a group called "MINX" and it was composed of 5 members : Jiu, Dami, Yoohyeon, SuA and Siyeon. The concept was bubbly (I like bubbly concept). MINX debuted in 2014 with 'Why Did You Come To My Home?' [MV]. But they rebranded it to "Dreamcatcher" and debuted as a 7 member group : Jiu (Leader), Yoohyeon, Dami, Handong (She wasn’t a MINX member), Gahyeon (Maknae) (She wasn’t a MINX member), Siyeon and SuA. Dreamcatcher has been known for their dark concept (I like dark concept too). Dreamcatcher debuted in 2017 with 'Chase Me' MV.

Dreamcatcher is one of the groups that are very in-your-face about what they think and aren't hesitant to say it. A lot of groups will, at best, tip-toe around a subject. Their music is great, of course, but I've always felt that, if you have a platform to speak to a multitude, you should use it for good. That doesn't necessarily mean that those who don't are bad people, but they need to become more aware of the influence they exert. Don't worry Coach, when you're first learning English, some words can be tough, but you'll get there. ;)

This goes for all celebrities in the world just not south korea. The big names don’t get these troubles but what about no names - less famous tv actor/actress/ singers. The dark side of entertainment. The darkside of kpop and its bullying, Even sulli and hara has multi- million dollar assets and money was not an issue but they still took their own life. There was a time that even the family of hara was going to court fighting for the millions of dollars hara left behind when died. Harsh! They was fighting desperately for her money and her funeral was not 100% completed

A lot of insecure K-pop fans find their identity in belonging to a particular fandom and will lash out against any group or individual they feel may outcompete their favorite. They can be really vicious and relentless, especially as an online mob, since they perceive a threat against their fav as a personal threat against them. Funny thing is most K-pop groups themselves have no problem with one another. It’s just the fans that go to extremes with sometimes tragic consequences. As someone from the US, I find this phenomenon most pervasive in Korean culture. Maybe Insomnia, as a group, are so chill because many of us live outside of Korea where “fan wars” is not really a thing we’re used to.

Love Dreamcatcher. They’re very different to a lot of other groups in the K-pop scene! Mr and Mrs Coach, on a separate note (and sorry to take the spotlight away from Dreamcatcher), but I’d love to see you check out Red Velvet’s killing voice (similar to the one you did for Mamamoo). It’s a longer one, but it’d give you a small taste of many of their greatest hits. Trust me, you’ll both be left blown away by the ridiculously good vocals from all of them (but especially Wendy). I didn’t check it out for the longest time as I never thought of myself as a *huge* Red Velvet fan, but once I watched that video and heard how many great songs I was missing out on, and their amazing energy, I can safely say they’re up there. Dreamcatcher are very talented, Dami is my bias, their rap is very good. There is a group that I really like and it is my favorite, it's called ENHYPEN, their songs are simply incredible, give a reaction please, the boys are very talented, visual ,dance,the voices are very good🙏💖😸

Great to see you come back to this. Sadly there are some dark sides to this industry and toxic fans are one side of that. It's good to see the artists bring attention to it. No doubt you will have had requests for IU (the nations little sister) who also had a song "BbiBbi" (Beep Beep) which is a warning to fans not to cross the line - as a coach you'll appreciated the metaphor. IU also had a song called 'Eight' which many believe is referencing the loss of Jonghyun, Sulli and Goo Hara - although unlike Boca and Bbibbi, Eight is more personal and not a commentary on fandoms/companies etc. For me personally, Kpop has been a light that has kept me out of a dark place for over a decade now and for the most part I choose to focus on all that is good ...like stunning visuals & vocals, amazing set designs and video production and of course great reaction channels.

Honestly I don't know why but lately I've been a little emocional , I don't know if it's because Christmas is coming or something like that.. Dreamcatcher always has good messages. By the way, many groups in kpop have good messages, in fact that was one of the reasons that made me fall in love with kpop. I was tired of listening to songs about the same thing over and over again (women, money, drugs, even things about love started to be repetitive and unoriginal) But back to your reaction, dreamcatcher has only many good music, of the most varied themes, with important and impactful messages, such as bullying, cyber bullying, climatic changes, wars and much more. It's issues like this that should be shared for the whole world to hear. But unfortunately the human being is very prejudiced and selfish and only looks at his navel. Unfortunately, people would rather criticize than support. I hope the world changes. Unfortunately, I don't have any hope of being able to witness this change with my own eyes. Because in 36 years the change I've seen happening hasn't been significant enough to give me hope.. I think it’s just the way these groups are “marketed” in K-pop. Fans are pushed to vote on these competitive shows, buy all their merchandise, watch all their appearances on TV programs, and develop this one-sided relationship with the people in the groups -so they *feel* like they actually know the members. Fans get jealous when anyone else has the spotlight, or a group doesn’t win an award. Or they turn into cocky braggarts and trash on other groups in misguided attempts to raise their own’s status. Pretty dysfunctional overall. It’s not really the members’ fault for these things, but they take the heat for their industry’s bad decisions. They need to stay engaged on social media to remain relevant, and that means jealous turds everywhere, along with the usual lowlife trolls who just get off on being .. jerks. You two have experienced that as well, as you said here :) Situation only seems to be getting worse as people lose more hope for a future that doesn’t suck, and take it out on each other because they have too little control to remedy any of the problems. Guess that’s why they resonated with me, that they took the time to write about it in a trilogy. This song seems to mostly be directed at the haters with the “I’m gonna change your mind, so you can breathe again”. I think we all tend to pass over the fact that these haters got that way by some thing(s) in their life tearing them down, and from what I got out of the three songs; they try to stop the haters by telling them to shut up, etc, but partly become corrupted themselves in the process (end of Scream, and going on the offensive here in BOCA). Odd Eye brings it into the future and ties in the fake glossy world social media tends to peddle, and ends in a sort of realization where DC offers a tempered path forward. When Mamamoo had thier debut, they were accused of being too old, fat or ugly and people told RBW not to bother with them as they will fail, now Mamamoo are one of the top vocal groups in Asia.

I seem to recall that i might mentioned it in another video but then again, i feel it also worth mentioning again which is, keep it real and do not let the haters get to you. As what you mentioned, there always be people who are negative, be it for valid reasons or not, but what we can do is not to let it affect us, and believe in our own self worth and values. just to comment about why these girls and why they receive these kinda hates, as to my knowledge it has to do what they call in korea FAN WAR, some fan were probably had that kind of jealously and insecurities were being out perform by other groups, and of course just to add your comment that some people just have that in them that they just want to hate almost anyting, you would even be suprise as to how ridiculous their hate comments, just to add also for your facts guys, their are some cases of idols already resulted to suicide because of that bullying issue.
