The second drummer was Phil Collins. He was a huge star in the '80s and '90s. He made records with a band called Genesis and by himself (on at least one song with Eric Clapton). During those 2 decades it seemed there was always some hit song that Phil Collins sang.

It was live aid. Some of the worlds biggest artists sitting backstage. Eric used to be in bands like cream and Derek and the dominoes but was a solo artist then. In these types of concerts, it’s not unusual for guitarists like Brian may of queen and jimmy page to get up with him and play for instance. Phil’s drums were there already so he got in and played along. Most of these guys are good friends.

@@anathardayaldar They did it, because they could. No other reason. Phil was a megastar back then. Massive commercial success with Genesis as well as solo and in other collaborations. Acted in movies and in a hit TV show called Miami Vice. You just couldn't turn a corner without Phil being somewhere. On the day of Live Aid, Phil played a few songs with Sting at the venue in London, got into the supersonic airplane Concorde and flew to the US to play again at this concert in Philadelphia. Including this guest appearance with Clapton.

In the stadium in Philadelphia/USA and in London's Wembley Stadium, there are said to have been around 170,000 people together. Supposedly around 75,000 in London and the calculated number would then be around 95,000 spectators in Philadelphia - but I'm undecided because I believe that Wembley at the time was bigger than the stadium in Philadelphia. Well, between 1.5 and 2 billion people are said to have watched Live Aid on TV in 1985 - I was 17 and one of them. It's great that you're sharing your impressions with us - thank you!

Look it's a younger Phil Collins (about 34ish) on drums! You reacted to him BIss : "Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight LIVE HD" Check out some Genesis (Phil Collins band) when you get a chance. 'Land of Confusion' MV is a fun one, or 'Invisible Touch' or 'Tonight, Tonight, Tonight' (my favorite Genesis song, so 80s love it) are some good choices imo. These were pretty big for Genesis in the 80s, among many many others. That dude/band was a hit making machine back then. It seemed like they were always on the radio. Your cute excitement when you saw the Strat (I want one, Fender) that looks like yours, adorable. Your eyes when you saw the crowd. 🤯 Cool rocking reaction Biss. It's a love song, Clapton wrote it to Pattie Boyd, George Harrison's wife. The original version was on "Layla and assorted love songs" by Derek and the Domino's ( Eric Clapton's band). On the original version Duane Allman of The Allmam Brothers Band played slide guitar on it. A guy that was taken far to young, died at 24 in a car crash. Mind you this was 85 so I sold spandex pants, rock tees, spiked bracelets, etc. If I didn't have access to the most important concert ever at the time, the people would riot. lol. That tv was horribly small, but I hooked up hangers and tin foil to the chicken wire over my booth and I don't think I sold one thing that day, but had my booth full of people, other vendors, cleaning crew, all day long. Slightly surprisingly Eric Clapton was one late in the day Live Aid highlights, blowing the two acts who followed him, Led Zeppelin and Duran Duran, off the stage. Even more surprising was that circa 1985 not only was he at something of an artistic low point releasing a trio of aimless albums during the mid-80s, but he was at the time a recovering alcoholic going through a messy divorce and (genuine) mental health issues. He somehow took this and performed a particularly tight and aggressive 3 songs dealing with mental health (The White Room), his divorce (She's Waiting) and a song written in part to impress his soon to be ex-wife (Layla)

You might also check out the beginning of Clapton’s set from Live Aid if you haven’t already: he opened with “White Room,” a song Cream recorded back in 1968, and which he really hadn’t played before during his solo career (and which he hadn’t sung before, since Jack Bruce was Cream’s vocalist). Honestly, I prefer that version to subsequent versions that he played; it’s a little more raw and unpolished. I think Clapton was playing one of his special guitars that day: a black Stratocaster, nicknamed “Blackie,” which he got be taking apart three different Strats, taking the best parts, and putting them together into one piece. It’s since been retired, but Fender studied it and put out an “Eric Clapton signature Stratocaster” based on it.

The attendance for Live Aid in Philadelphia was almost 90,000. Eric Clapton was in the middle of a US tour at the time and it certainly showed. That was a great performance. The band was very tight and spot on. I remember thinking that at the time as I watched the concert and I'm happy to hear this version again after all these years. Incidentally I just saw Eric Clapton again this past September in Boston and he still kicks ass. Glad you enjoyed this classic, which is often regarded as one of the best rock songs of all time. Oh yeah, Phil Collins was the second drummer on stage. He had played earlier at Wembley Stadium in London and then flew to New York on the supersonic Concorde then helicoptered to Philly and played there too, along with guesting with Clapton and probably a few others. Phil Collins was at the height of his popularity in those days. It w3as kind of a cool stunt.

The is absolutely the best version of Layla ever. When the backup singers hit the 3rd octave and the incredibly fast tempo is just killer. Look up the picture on the internet with "Clapton is God photograph" and I have it framed. It's from 1966-67 era with the old lady walking her dog. Look what the dog is doing at the fence. I think back then it was a lower end part of London.

Bisscute, the crowd was going crazy because they knew what was coming, one of the most iconic riffs and the greatest rock and roll love song. However there are a number of live performances of the song that are much better than this, particularly highlighting the beauty of the piano/guitar interplay in the second half of the song (the full version rarely gets played on the radio). I watched this live on television when they did this concert. Dick Clark was talking when Led Zeppelin came out and they wouldn't show it for a couple minutes, but the crowd roaring was so loud that they had to show them, the Kings of Rock.

If you liked this version of the song, you owe it to yourself to watch the early days, when he was there with Duane Allman with Clapton, unfortunately there were only a couple of times that happened live. It was magic.

1:40 The excitement over the guitar was so cute lol. I was really hyped to see you did this version instead of the acoustic version (also good). The main guitar lead riff is so good, but what really does it for me in this song is the piano part leading into the outro. Nothing fancy or complex, but the feel in progression is a literal drug.

I giggled. Same guitar? Not hardly, the one he was playing is named "Blackie", he built it out of 3 different Stratocasters. It sold for close to a million bucks to raise funds for a drug treatment center. I saw him play it on tour in 85' or so, we knew it was going into retirement. Never truly realized the depth of my geekiness until I read that post.

I saw the original band (Derek and the Dominoes) play the "Layla" album in the fall of 1970 on Long Island, N.Y.........I can't explain what a thrill that was.. You should listen to the original recording of Layla with the original band members.

Hi! Love your reactions. The guy on the white drums is Phil Collins. You've already made a reaction to "In The Air Tonight" . Check them up and you'll the same guy. In this video he's around 20 years younger then "In The Air Tonight" one. Hugs

"Clapton is GOD." Truly a rock icon. The song was inspired by Clapton's secret love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend and fellow musician George Harrison of the Bealtles.. After Harrison and Boyd divorced, Clapton and Boyd eventually married.

I framed the full "B&W" picture with the old lady and the black dog urinating on the cheap metal fencing. I put it in my colorful 1st floor powder room for the guests to have a look at the total contrasting colors. My guests always enjoy it, but with questions about the meaning. Anybody who knows the story simply loves it.

You can see Phil Collins on drums. He had the distinction that day, because of flying on the Concorde, to play in both London and Philadelphia on that same day of Live Aid!

This song actually about a life experience Eric Clapton had. He fell in love with Patti Boyd who was George Harrison's wife. He knew he could never be with her so it is a song of heart break. Eventually Patti and George got divorced then Clapton did marry her.
