4:13 Cliff died when they were on tour for their third album, Master Of Puppets, he died September 27th 1986, 1 year and 27 days after this show happened
Cliff was awesome and a great influence to James.. there's a song dedicated to him by the band andostly by James called to live is to die and it compounds the music Cliff was working on before he died in 86.. clif. Was thee only one tht actually had a music degree and was a big influence to them til this day. Awesome Metallica my favorite. Gd day
He is one of the most iconic bass players ever and he achieved that in only 3 years (1983-1986) when he unfortunately passed away at the age of 24... RIP Cliff, we'll always love you.
Cliff passed away in Sept 1986, a few months after the release of their album “Master of Puppets.” The live show in Seattle 1989 was with bassist, Jason Newstead, who joined the band in late 1986 and was with them until early 2001. RIP Cliff, miss ya man! Edit: I forgot to say great reaction and I love watching your reactions and particularly the Metallica journey you have taken!
I always say this when anyone reacts to this performance: kudos to the camera guy. He captured some of, if not the most, iconic moments of Cliff as a performer. Instead of going over the entire band during the intro he stayed on Cliff as he headbangs like a madman, his hair waiving in the air like a flag for heavy metal. How easily could it have been to just focus on James during the second verse, missing Cliff pointing to his eyes.
Cliff was their 'big brother', he was an inspiration and a teacher to them; he introduced them to classical music and a lot of other styles of music. They lost more than just a band member when he passed away, and that marked them and their music. You can hear it in their 'Justice' era, all the aggressiveness and resent put both into the music and the lyrics. And as always, thanks for the video and all the energy you give out.
@Bisscute you have to hear "Anesthesia pulling teeth" 🤘 The whole song is one big Cliff Burton bass solo . You can listen to the studio version which is nicely tuned or to an 1983 live version , which shows what a freaking young god Cliff was 🤟 Edit : this will take you deeper down into metallicas rabbit hole 😉🤟
1983 Live version. You have to watch Cliff to get a full appreciation of what he is doing to that bass. The bass could not sleep at night after that performance. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lRArbRr-61E.html
I really recommend that too. The live version really shows how Cliff is the beast with the bass, even the video quality is poor. Also you could see them all as really young, quite early performance on their career. Also bonus tip: Metallica performed the bass solo in their concert with San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. There the classical bass player of the orchestra played the Anasthesia Pulling Teeth as a tribute to Cliff. Really insane skills doing the same with double bass, and lovely to see the joy on the band member faces after the performance, feeling the tribute.
You need to hear "Orion" considered Cliff's swan song for that he mixed and produced it. Just need to know which particular parts were him on bass (the opening is him on electric organ)
Now that Bisscute is familiar with Cliff Burton, I think it's time she listens to Orion (1986) - if she has not already - which I understood was played at his funeral. It's already got an emotional vibe to it (especially that middle section), but factor in the "memorial for a fallen talent" component, and it hits harder. Also, To Live Is To Die (1988)...
There are not a lot of Cliff Burton live videos out there because he died so soon. Anesthesia Pulling Teeth live Chicago 1983 is a must see if you really want to see Cliff go off on a solo.
Hi , I am flabbergasted that you saw cliff put up the fingers to the eyes gesture showing how much he was into the music that they were creating! Two thumbs up, Biscuits !!
Love hearing these guys live, and ohhhh....CLIFF!! Only downside is that this version is faster than the studio track. I think it hits better at the slower pace! But badass!
Cliff was a brilliant musician, in the early days of Metallica when still based in Los Angeles James and lars watched Cliff's band Trauma play at the infamous Whisky a go go . so impressed they tried to recruit him into the band, he acceped on 1 condition, the band moves from LA to San Francisco. that move made history all because of Cliff Burton. his void still felt to this day
Cliff Burton died after a tour bus crash in Sweden in 1986. The bus rolled over and Cliff was thrown out of the window before the bus came down and landed on him.
I was 13 when Ride The Lightning came out and I never was blown away like that again until Master Of Puppets came out. Metallica. Only band to ever blow my mind twice.
This is why you a great Biss. You recognize the James at his peak just like you noticed - quickly - that the young Jagger -= in 1965- was the real deal.
You did the reaction to Creeping Death live in San Diego 1992 (imho the best live with Seattle 1989). Cliff died in 1986 and Jason replaced him. Cliff was a better player but Jason had more stage presence, better backing vocals. Requiescat in pace Cliff, we missed you.
This going to be nice, but i hope you react to their prime live in 1989, the songs that you can react are Battery, the four horsemen, welcome home or the thing that should not be♥️
Cliff had massive finger strength! He had to in order to approach the bass the way he did. I play bass. Whenever I pick up a guitar (rarely), I always find it funny how effortless it is to fret individual notes because of the difference in the string gauges. Cliff was awesome in his composition and performance. Check out the instrumental "Orion" from the Master of Puppets album. Cliff's influence is everywhere (including two great bass interludes and a bass solo at the end that sounds like a low-end guitar solo). . . . Jason did a great job for the 14-15 years he was there. He had his own style (pick, 5-string bass) and influence. . . . Rob Trujillo (former Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Ozzy Osborne, and Black Label Society bassist) is much more similar to Cliff, but with some funk (when he does his own thing). Metallica has been blessed with great bassists, imo!
2:44 "That's a freaking bass." Kirk Hammett inspired me to pick up guitar when I got into them in the 90s. It was discovering Cliff Burton that started my journey to switching to bass guitar after 9 years of playing guitar. I had no clue you could do the things he did, and he blew my mind. The song at the end was The Four Horseman, another one that Cliff excelled on.
It is truly a great pleasure to be watched by a man. With what joy and love you accept their playing. You're very smiling and positive and I'm really looking forward to more Metallica stuff. Cliff was great with his playing and creativity.🤘👏😊
This is possibly the most iconic bass performance in metal. Les Claypool is one of the few bass players who can hold a candle to Cliff, he auditioned to replace Cliff but James & Lars told him he's too good and should form a band of his own. So he did and world gave the world Primus. Primus is fantastic but waaaaay out there, maybe try Jonny was A Race Car Driver (from Sailing the Seven Seas of Cheese) as a reaction video? It's about as close to normal as Primus gets!
They all loved Cliff. One of those musicians no one from any band that knew him has a bad word to say about him. Recently Dave Mustaine from Megadeth was on The Joe Rogan Show and they showed a picture of Dave when he was in Metallica standing next to Cliff and you can see Dave's face go sad and he said he still misses Cliff to this day. Cliff was all around one of a kind.
You happen to pick one of my favorite versions with Cliff live for this song. This is off the video Cliff 'Em All, which is a video of bootleg recordings at shows with Cliff, long may he RIP, one of the best ever!
I get what you mean for the quality, but you have to understand that he passed away in '86, and this will be the best video quality you'll get from that era. Any other video you'll find with Cliff in it will be from club footage, and that video quality won't even touch this one. This is my all time favorite song, so I hope you enjoyed it as well! Rock on, Bisscute!!
oh yes the youth captured on video , cliff was the oldest member of the band 23 followed closely by Kirk also 23 James & Lars were 22. I was 11 years old and a fan of the band for 2 years already
37 years this September Cliff Died.....unbelievable. since Lars Camco drum kit was stolen back in January of 1984, i always liked his Lightning set up.
There' s one thing I want to bring into attention: check out Metalfest '85 in it's entirety... Cliff Burton KICKING ASS WITH AUTHORITY. BUT ALSO CHECK OUT HIS VERY LAST BASS SOLO BEFORE HIS TRAGIC PASSING: HE PLAYED HIS LAST SOLO WITH VENGEANCE ( SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST ) I WOULD CALL IT LIKE SOME KIND OF PREMONITION BEFORE HIS DEATH
Cliff was one of this world's most innovative and brilliant bassists, he was taken way too soon, too young , but has left us with his amazing riffs and songs for all time mainly their from two greatest albums Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, RIP Cliff we all love and miss you.
If you do a search for "Cliff`Em All" (their self-released "bootleg" video), you can find lots of live Cliff footage, which features a lot of "Anesthesia" (bass solo).
Someone mentioned Cliff's date of death which was indeed September of 1986 - that means the anniversary is either upon us or just passed - I cannot recall the exact date, so I'm not sure which. But yeah, Burton was a beast - played that bass like a lead guitar. Anesthesia (aka the Bass Solo) is one of his biggest highlights.
I was at this show and it was absolutely the best time to be young! Days on the green were a regular happening in the SF Bay Area and would be all day long with as many as 5 headlining bands. No cell phones. No auto tune. Just sun S D and R and R!
Heard an interview with James, only a few years back. He got asked the question, if you can have one wish what would that be? and James answered, to have Cliff back.
I was a early teen metalhead when Metallica first came out. No internet. We had pirate radio stations and you always had your cassette ready to record. If you were lucky, you had a good record store to find gems. Sometimes you had to get the original band that Metallica covered....Budgie, Misfits, etc. Concert tickets and new albums...we might stand in line for days. 🤘😜
Cliff Burton was only 23 when this was shot in 1985 at the 'Day at the Green' festival show... Metallica were touring for the album 'Ride the Lightning' (2nd album). Unfortunately, this is one of the best quality footage for Metallica's Cliff Burton years... they released a video "Cliff 'em all" which put together footage shot by fans and filmed by crews between 1983 and 1986. Metallica were just becoming popular when Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus accident in 1986 at age 24. From what I've read, Cliff Burton was a huge fan of 70's bands like ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath... but he was also a schooled musician and he loved classical music as well. Every bass player in the 80's was a fan of Gene Simmons of Kiss (whether they admitted it or not!) His playing style was inspired by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead (who also played bass w/ a distortion pedal). His bass solo was on the first Metallica album "Kill 'em all" in 1983 w/ the track "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth" which goes into the next song 'Whiplash'.
the S&M album is a decent way to hear their older songs with modern recording, but they are accompanied by an orchestra so there is an additional element to it
Concerning Cliff’s headbanging, this is something he had been doing since he was born, literally. As his sister Connie Burton recalls: «When he was a baby, he used to rock [from left to right], I mean all the time, for hours… hours… Cliff was headbanging when he was a baby. He just couldn’t go [back and forth] yet, because a baby’s neck doesn’t do that.» And he kept doing it as an adult as Kirk Hammett once commented: «Onstage, he’d rock forward and backward like one of those perpetual fucking woodpeckers. In bed, he’d rock from left to right while listening to his headphones.» Yet he didn’t necessarily did it to keep track of the tempo, it was something else, as James Hetfield noticed: «Cliff would play at one tempo, but headbang three times faster. He’d be in a trance-just lost in another world. There were times his giant mop of hair would be flying, and Lars would suddenly drop a beat. Cliff would pop up and look over like, “What the fuck? You just tainted my high. You fucked up my groove!” But then he’d get right back into it, and his eyes would roll back. That had nothing to do with drugs, although he did do some. It’s just what the music did to him.» And it wasn’t particulary safe, to tell the truth, as his father Ray Burton warned him: «Cliff would call home and complain about his neck hurting. I’d say, “My gosh. You’re bouncing that head up and down all the time. What does the human head weigh, eight or ten pounds? That’s the weight of a bowling ball bouncing up and down on your neck!”» The first statement by his sister comes from a video available on RU-vid and the others are taken from the book Metallica: Back to the Front.
If you wanna see them young: Whiplash or Anesthesia (pulling teeth) at the metro. If you wanna see Cliff's masterpiece, check Orion. Even if you do a recent version with Rob on the bass, it's incredibly touching to see how the guys and the crowd live the song 🤘🏻
When I was teenager I was home alone and had this cassette full volume on the house stereo. Then the power went out. Then my mom and dad and sisters came home. Then we were all asleep and the power came back on at 3am.
I'm enjoying watching you discover Metallica for the first time, I love early Metallica! I hope you'll continue to have fun with this and ignore the bad side of the fan base. This is one of the bands that has some toxic fans whom I've seen turn people off from them...
You picked the PERFECT version R.I.P Cliff monster on Bass. Everyone LOVED Cliff the rest of the band was in shock after the crash that killed Cliff Edit: oh yeah loved your reaction, always love it in the videos i watch 😉
RIP CLIFF!!! First time hearing this song on record/tape/cd/radio you think the intro is a guitar. When you see them live is when you realize IT'S THE FUCKING BASS!!!!! Great reaction Biss.
RIP Cliff Burton, legit one of the most badass bass players ever, especially given his short tenure in Metallica before his death. This has always been my favourite Metallica song, it's such a fucking belter!
NO, this is the absolute BEST version to react to, and ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Metallica reactions should be LIVE
You may know by now , that the first video of rhis song you watched it was Jason Newsted on bass, who was a. Suitable replacement. By know means a Cliff Burton ( R.I.P) my metal brother. To hear cliffs true talent you need to hear (Anesthesia) pulling teeth from Kill em all.
Cliff was their bassist,he passed away at 24 years old, then after he died Jason Newsted joined and bring back Metallica to life and been soul of them for long with his amazing skills and song my friend of misery until early 2001 when he leaves because they didn't wanted his request for 1 year pause so he can make his own song or it's album idk then the Roberto Trujillio come,a great bassist from Mexico who is still part of Metallica Edit:forgot first bassist is mc cartney and also after Jason lefted Bob rock was for sometime bassist then Robert
Early Metallica is epic 91-94 tour was fire 🔥. I seen them for the first time in 94, was blown away by their intensity. It was raining and James was like "let's get struck by lightning" and played through the storm.
Funny you say it hits different. A lot of fans think the best stuff stopped at the making of the Black album. Regardless, I saw them around this time, maybe 87 or 88. They were the 3rd act of a 5 band Monsters of Rock concert....and it was like this, pure melt your face metal.
I don't know if this has been suggested, or if you have reacted to it, but a VERY good song that showcases his bass is called Pulling Teeth (Anesthesia)
Their all arround 20 years old in there , now they are became a father for You right now METALLICA is still alive after more than 40 years old playing music together and still number 1 heavy metal band in the worldwide They influences many band in differents era
