Wanted to write just that. The Iron Cross was even during the Nazi an honor badge for soldiers. And even today the Iron Cross is a sign on aircrafts and ground vehicles (like tanks) of the Bundeswehr and many variants are on badges.
One of the things I like about Sabaton is that they don't seem to discriminate based on which army a soldier fought for. They'll sing about a hero's honour, courage, or compassion even if he's on the side that modern history deems the "bad guys".
@@AngelWedge that's cause history doesn't deem anyone "bad guys" - it just speaks about facts. The only reason we view some of the more modern history in this way is cause we bring in our biases (and mind you, nothing wrong with that but this is the right way to show history - letting the facts speak for themselves and the audience draw their own opinions from it) To give an example - if Roman Empire wasn't a thing from 1500 years ago, we would talk about them being the bad guys happily genociding tribes that fought against them. But since its so long ago, nobody thinks that way.
There are quite a few of us girls that love Sabaton. I mean... who doesn't love a story about heroes and triumph against the odds? Add the fact that it is based on true stories and it is golden.
Also, every time you react to a Sabaton music video and you do not react to the associated Sabaton history episode you are missing a massive opportunity.
In the words of my father "If you are the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." Everyone can learn something from someone else. And as long as you keep learning, it doesn't matter what you dont know. It only matters that you know more today than you did yesterday.
I'm female and I've been a huge fan for 20 years. Sabaton has an incredible number of female fans all over the world. Sabaton is from Sweden and they only sing about the history of war and do not take sides for anyone. All their songs are based on facts. Hugs from Sweden
Not all their songs are history based. In their first album Metalizer they have songs history based but not all. However all their new songs and every album except for metalizer is full history based.
I am female and I have become big fan of Sabaton. I was never into history in high school but I have learned a lot from Sabaton. Thanks a lot for jumping down the Sabaton rabbit hole!
I am all for a Sabaton marathon! But you have to do your homework and react to “No bullets fly” animated version, it is very important to watch the animated version and make sure you watch to the very end.
Pretty crazy fact, after he was shot down the enemy gave him a funeral with all the military honors because they had so much respect for him. Also interessting, can't find the quote right now, but I remember reading when asked why he painted his plane red and not some camouflage he said something like "I don't want to hide, I want the enemy to see me and be afraid!"
fun fact, he stopped accepting awards for shooting down other planes after about 60, due to wartime shortages the army had to change the award from gold (I forgot the shape) to silver of the same shape. And he decided "nah I got gold for the first 60. I'm not settling for silver."
I'm a 32 year old women from Sweden and love history and I'm big fan of Sabaton. Been listening to them for 17 years, seen them live 40 times. And there is always a lot of women in the crowds at the consents so there's a lot of us that loves both history and metal. And I can tell you, you are up for a treat, you have so many amazing songs to discover. If you want to se some really cool music videos i can recommend "Christmas Truce" or ”1916" , 1916 is a Motörhead cover, both songs have lyrics that really hits you deep and the videos are truly amazing
Women doesn't like history???? Nonsense! Sabaton has massive amount of female followers, cause they were intelligent enough to mix the history lesson with badass music.😂 I think you would enjoy react to the musicvideo Screaming Eagles
Nice reaction guys. And yes Sabaton definitely have a lot of female fans I think they call themselves Sabaton Witches Division and I’ve noticed they have a lot of merch for women also. The animated story video version of this song is very nice they always have a good balance between the history telling and song. And as a 49yo lady I can confirm I personally really enjoy listening to Sabaton amongst diverse other metal music since I’ve started to listen to it 3,5 years ago 😊
@BlackPegasusRaps, the Wright brothers were the first to fly a POWERED aircraft in 1903. The first flight of an airplane/glider was carried out by Otto Lilienthal in 1893. None of them were the inventors of it but rather the first to fly successfully. Many rich people at the time tinkered arround with glider or motorplanes.
sabaton, is always been a band with a big female part in their crowds... even back before they turned to "history music" songs... at least here in germany, i only knew of sabaton, from female metalheads....
Sabaton doesn't just do history, they commemorate the sacrifice, humanity, and heroism of those caught in the chaos of war while not glorifying it or taking sides. They tell the tales that should be remembered and are too often forgotten. BTW, during their live shows they use a small red Fokker triplane that is actually a Hammond organ.
I got to see them in Seattle last year (or maybe '22?) and I loved it. I started tearing up when they rolled a piano out onto the stage though and Joakim sat down, because I knew what song was coming next.
@@TheMightyDM Saw them in Nashville in Octt 2022 with Epica as the opener. best concert I have ever been to, their interaction with the crowd is worth the price of admission alone. Epica was also top notch. I would definitely recommend seeing them in a smaller venue.
Funny 😂. I'm a 57 year old female who love Sabaton's music but I'm a rap and reggae lover metal head😁 so it's not too strange. Actually there's a lot of women who love Sabaton. 🤓🇸🇪
I am a 66 year old woman who loves Sabaton. My favorite song is Christmas Truce. I still remember all the feelings I had when I heard about that story for the first time when I was 10 years old. And yes, I still cry every time I listen to it.
If you're really getting into Sabaton, I highly recommend reacting to The Last Stand. It's a great song and it has religious context to it, specifically regarding Catholicism and the Swiss Guard, who are the bodyguards of the Pope
Great reaction to my favorite Sabaton song. Actually, Sabaton has many female fans 😅 I don't know numbers, but what I saw from shows I would say it could be 50:50. You already saw the thumbnail of Night Witches, and that would be my next recommendation. The animated video of Night Witches. It is an animated video with the song and background information. The story is about female pilots in the Second World War. Greetings from Germany
I am a 73 woman and I love Sabaton. My grandson just loves "Screaming Eagles" and asks Nana to play it every time he visits. They are my work-out videos.
Night Witches is a very cool piece of history about Russian female pilots. Also check out Sabaton's Resist & Bite - look through the comments for the full explanation of that piece of history. Amazing.
My favourite line in this song is probably "from the horseback to the skies" … it passes you by until you really think about it. But then it kind of drives home how new planes really were; there wasn't a real air force yet, so they figured that controlling an aircraft is similar to riding a horse and offered the job to the best cavalry guys. It's those little bits of history that don't make sense until you look it up. Have you seen the Sabaton history videos? They've got some that are like deep dives into the history behind their songs.
Now, my girl loves Sabaton. But you’re right. A lot of women whom I talk to don’t know what it is. Good music brings people together, though. Man or woman, have ‘em listen to _En Livstid I Krig_ with the subtitles and they’ll be tearing up, for sure. Great song!
A country singer who also focused a lot on historical songs is Johnny Horton. His non-historical stuff is good too. His most famous song was probably The Battle of New Orleans.
as insane as it is to think about that so few years after their invention, they were used for war, think about the following. From the flight of the first airplane to man taking his first step on the moon, only 66 years passed. within a single lifetime, we went from ground-locked to space flight
This was a great reaction, you should do the song 1916, its a cover of the song 1916 by motorhead, but they did such an amazing job on their cover, and their music video is just so amazing!
I am from Hungary and female, and every year at the Sabaton concerts there is a looot of female as well. I think it’s quite common in Europe for women to love history.
diffrent life and priorities/interests, it always surprises me when people have no clue about thing i view as base common knowledge but the thing is .....the reverse is true, i have no idea about so many things i don't even know i don't know about and are considered basic common knowledge for other people
Loads of ladies love Sabaton, myself included. Many of us are history buffs and metal heads. It’s great to watch you two experience more and more of Sabaton! Check out some of the animated music videos Sabaton has created about women in war: “Night Witches” or “Lady of the Dark”. Some great bangers!
It was common for Bi-planes to shoot their propellers off, until multiple designs helped to stop it from happening. One of these designs was made by Anthony Fokker.
Black Pegasus slowly becoming a metal head in his 40ies!! It is a glorious thing to behold! LOL -Just kidding, I know he is just starting to appreciate talents from all genres. But I genuinly love watching him unfold a bit of the christian stigma his background has instilled in him! -Metal is pro life!!! LOLOL -BP, If you are reading tonight; Keep grinding Bro!
Yooo more Sabaton reactions would be dope! Some I'd personally reccoment are The Unkillable Soldier, Fields of Verdun, Soldier of Heaven, and Price of a Mile. Its hard to narrow down to just a few
I'm a 50 year old history nerd and I love that you learn new things. I'm quite new to hiphop and I get just as amazed by that as you are by the Red Baron. Peace and Love from Sweden. ✌️
I like when they repeat “higher” after the 2nd chorus and before the organ/guitar solo, that guitar riff reminds of a fighter spinning thru the air in a dogfight.
I've never been into metal myself, but I found I really enjoyed that video, plus I get to learn some history. I'm down to check out more. p.s. That chorus sticks in your head a bit, too, 'Hiigheeer..', lol
Sabaton is fantastic. They also have a history channel that does a deep dive behind a lot of their songs, it's really interesting and could also make a good reaction video. Maybe do the song and history segment back to back. :) I'm sure a lot of Sabaton fans will show up for the reactions.
Whenever I watch a Sabaton reaction video I keep seeing comments of doing "Christmas Truce" or "1916" and I just keep thinking: "Those are the songs you do if you want to cry" Because there are plenty of Sabaton songs that tell the awesome tale of someone's exploits in these wars and events, and then there are the songs that really drive home how horrible war really is.
we are here for every Sabaton reaction. If you dont get recommendations you can literally pick any song and you'll love it. They sing about the 300 Spartans, the Samurai in Shiroyama, they have lots of songs about WW1 and WW2, and everything in between. Their first album wasn't history based, but every other album is. So pick one sit back and enjoy the ride.
Fun fact! Rote commissioned a small silver cup from a jeweler for every kill he scored. His collection of those capped off at 60 though because there literally was not enough silver available in all of Germany by that point to continue it
My wife is into Sabaton. Lady of the Dark. Nightwitches. 82nd all the way.. Oh they had the scarves because of the cold and the oil that would spray into their face because of the engine, The planes were basically paper and plywood.
Girl who likes history here. I think you'll get more viewers on Sabaton Reactions if you don't choose the lyric versions? Some of their stuff is best live, sometimes the music video is best, sometimes they have an animated version. Keep track of what is recommended in the comments for each song. Check out "night witches" the animated version for some women's role in war history. "No bullets fly" should also be seen animated. "En livstid i krig" (A lifetime at war) should be seen live from Gothenburg (make sure you find one with English subtitles), 40:1 should be seen live from woodstock Poland, "Christmas truce" and "1916" should be seen via the official video
Personally I prefer the lyrics videos to the live shows as to me the live shows don't sound as good. Tho I do agree they should do the animated videos.
Yeah, that's a no from me for the live shows. I never understand why people recommend them, neither with Rammstein, nor with Sabaton. They are good once you are hooked to the song and you know it because they are impressive (especially Rammstein's live shows), but they are not good for a first time reaction/ first time hearing the song, especially since they don't sound as good as the studio version. Someone showed me a live video of Rammstein some years ago, I watched it and was like "okay", but didn't feel like searching more about them. Last year I stumbled upon one of their songs made in studio and have been listening to all their songs since. I agree with the animated videos part of your comment though.
@@tkh846 I agree that the sound is better and the lyrics are better heard on studio recorded material. But... if you want to understand the band and the Sabaton phenomenon, you need to see everything, both how much money and time is spent on their music videos, the storytelling in the animated stories and the stage presence, the pyrotechnics, the props and the interaction with the audience at the live performances. In "En livstid i krig" from Gothenburg, for example, it is mainly the audience that impresses.
If your looking at more of Sabatons music look to se if there is a music video or animated version of it first as those will give abit of context information in the video itself and the animated videos will have a short history story before and after the video itself. Sabaton wants ppl to look/react to these stuff so your not gonna get a claim on the videos.
Some facts about the song and the person: - "Born a soldier from the horseback to the skies" is as true as it sounds. Richtohfen began his military career as part of a calvary detachment. - "Bloody April" was nicknamed by the British because of how many planes they lost that month (nearly 300). Out of that number, Jasta 11 (the squad led by the Red Baron and is also known as The Flying Circus) shot down 89 of them. Of the 89 shot down, Richtohfen shot down 22 of them by himself (even downing 4 in one day). - Although many people picture him with the Fokker Triplane, he only did a fraction of his kills in the Triplane. The bulk of them he got while still flying a Biplane. - He painted his plane bright red so that, according to him, his squad always knew where he was at all times. His squad also adopted the bright color scheme on their planes (hence nicknamed The Flying Circus). It helped immensely to distinguish them from enemy and friendly planes alike, since there was always a lot of friendly fire in the skies. - Richtohfen is actually born of Prussian nobility, so he's a noble by all accounts.
He was credited with 80 victories, but it's probable he had several more that were unconfirmed likely putting his total around 100 or more. The Red Baron was respected by the Allied forces as much as he was feared, so much that when he was ultimately killed his enemies arranged a full military funeral and squadrons all over France sent wreaths, one of which read "To Our Gallant and Worthy Foe". He died April 21, 1918 age 25.
Night Witches goes hard, definitely one of their best. Other great ones I suggest "The Christmas Truce," "Steel Commanders," and "Father." Then one awesome one they don't play live anymore because it creep them out seeing people rocking to it, but is a must watch "Final Solution."
If we're talking about girls here, I'm recommending "Night Witches" and "Lady of the Dark". First is about all-female night bombers regiment and the second one is about the most decorated woman EVER who fought in the army even though at that time it was forbidden for women.
80 confirmed kills over 20 months, and 21 of those were in April of 1917. I looked that up while I listened to the two of you talk after than number was mentioned in the song. From my understanding, initially the planes were only used for scouting until the pilots started shooting at each other with their service sidearms.
Sabaton's History Channel, where their historian goes into depth about the songs, is just *awesome.* (And they let him be in some of their music videos, he was so excited.) They do more than the world wars, too--one of their albums deals with the events of the 30 years' war, where Sweden played a big role (their king at the time was Protestant, and so he was big on taking the fight to the Catholic Hapsburg rulers) You definitely need to check out their recent cover of Motorhead's 1916 (they did it as a tribute to Lenny, and his band members are in the video), and The Christmas Truce--Floor Jansen sings the outro music on that one. Their lead guitarist, Tommy (the big blond dude with the baby face, poor guy) also has an INCREDIBLE voice--he did a cover of Phantom of the Opera. He sang both parts. And he hit the high note. It was impressive as heck.
Sabaton is my guilty pleasure. Cause while they take great care not to associate themselves with any of the causes they sing about, they do still glorify fighting. and that supports militarism. But still it's awesome music about history and i love them. my favorite song is Father, cause it's a really nuanced and thoughtful song about ethics and how difficult historical retrospective is.
In the earliest days of aerial combat during ww1 the pilots were dogfighting with hand held pistols and not mounted machine guns. A cool fact about the Red Baron, Manfred Von Richthofen, is that after he was shot down by the Entente (allied) forces he was given a military funeral with honours, with Entente officers and lower ranks acting as pallbearers and giving a fired salute. One of the memorial wreaths laid at his grave had "To our gallant and worthy foe" written on it. He was surprisingly well respected by his enemies.
You guys should do a part 2 where you react to the Sabaton History videos that go with the songs! That way you can learn what's behind the lyrics! :) P.S. I'm female and I LOVE SABATON!!
Hey, I understand the cartoon reference! I learned about the Red Baron from "Snoopy and the Red Baron" cartoon. Before I ever heard about it in school! Lol
