Many of the characters in this anime are based on real historical characters, as well as the places and maps. -The "New Continent" is North America. (Terranova Island, Canada) - Leif is based in Leif Erickson, the viking explorer -Vinland is the name that the Vikings gave to the American continent.

This series is actually "historical fiction" which tends to have a lot of elements based on real recorded history, but can move into it's own story seperate from said history without changing the historical events and is told from the point of view of a character that didnt necessarily exist. However, Throfinn is actually based off of Thorfinn Karlsefni from an old Scandinavian tale "The Saga of the Greenlanders", so the character, while fictional, is also somewhat based in history. And yes, Vinland was the original name of the Americas given to it by it's original Scandinavian discoverers, being Leif Erikson and his crew

vinland is actually real, like leif eriksson, he actually "discovered" it before columbus. This anime has a lot more history accurate things than you imagine

Vinland was indeed real. There's stories and even evidence in Northern Canada that it did exist, and you're correct Nick the show takes place around real historical events, so most of the characters like Leif did exist during this time period

You will love the show, and know this, season one is just a prologue and character backstory, season two is gonna pop off

if you didnt know already, Wit Studio is the same studio that made Attack on Titan seasons 1-3, so thats why the art and animation and action are so good. (also netflix didnt make this show, they just recently bought the rights to it. even though it came out a few years ago)

After seeing this had lost on the poll I started rewatching it just finished last night and now to find out ur doing it anyways I'm psyched!!

You'll find that many characters, locations and events in this anime were actually real with some creative license taken. Leif Erikson actually discovered North America for example and apparently interacted with indigenous people. Thorfinn was a real Viking too with an interesting historical end to his story.

4:47 btw, it's not a Netflix anime it just came out on Netflix few days ago but it was already out since like 2 years on other streaming platforms ;D (Also wit studio is also the studio that animated season 1,2 and 3 of attack on titan so that's why it's that wonderful 😁)

I actually live in one of the Canadian provinces thought to be part of the real life "vinlands" mentioned in the old viking explorer's texts this story is based on, Newfoundland! Reading the manga for Vinland Saga was such an amazing ride, though I don't believe it has finished yet (I was waiting until the ending before I read the rest). Either way, it was so, so cool to see my island province show up on the maps in the manga and anime. Rarely does this little spot get recognition so this story will always have a special place in my heart for that, not just the incredible story alone haha Hope you continue to enjoy it!

This anime had everything you loved about attack on Titan. Character drama, political intrigue, philosophical introspection, and that's on top of banger action scènes.

Thorfinn is actually a real historical figure. He actually had a statue somewhere in Canada but I can’t remember where. Although pretty much all of Thorfinn’s actions in the story is artistic license

About 7:39 people in those times(medieval) used to sleep together actually, whole families slept in single huge beds, one of the reason was for winter that way they keep themselves warm

It is not an exaggeration to say that Thorfinn is one of the best written seinen manga protagonists of all time. We may not start to see that later until Season 2, but we damn sure will see it eventually. Not to mention the other incredible characters. This series is top notch. ("seinen" refers to more mature manga, "shonen" is geared more towards youth, and those are all the shows you've already been watching.)

Hey bro, do you want an anime with God-tier soundtrack?! You should watch the Anime Movie titled "Your Name" if you want an anime with God-tier OST, story, visuals, animation, voice-acting etc. Your Name is one of the highest rated anime movies of all-time, and one of the best movies in general. I think that watching Your Name as your first anime movie will change your whole view of anime movies. Every precious second of this anime is beautiful and I promise you won't regret watching it. Soundtrack is perfect, story is perfect, animation is perfect, etc. If I was given a chance to erase a part of my memory, I would erase my memory of watching Your Name so that I can experience watching it for the first time (again).

The funniest thing to me is that I started this show the day you posted this video! But it’s a historical fiction anime based on the Vikings and Vinland is actually the America’s (which the Vikings/Lief Erickson actually discovered before Christopher Columbus)

Vinland saga, vagabond and berserk are the holy trinity of peak mangas and you can’t say otherwise. Glad you started this series it’s really good, sadly the other ones don’t have a worthy animation yet.

What’s happening with Arcane ?

The battle in the beginning is inspired by the Battle of Hjörungavágr. Between the Norwegian earls of Lade and a Danish invasion fleet led by the famous Jomsvikings. It was a part of Hákon Sigurðarson's (For some: Hákon Jarl Hinn Ríki, Hakon the Powerful or his opponents aka Hákon Illi, Hakon the Bad). He ruled Norway as a liege king under the Danish king Haraldr Blátǫnn Gormsson(Harald Bluetooth, yes the king who given name to the technology). He was a well traveled man and even went to Novogorod to help Volodiměrъ Svętoslavičь (Volodymyr I Sviatoslavych, Vladimir the Great) who was his relative from the Rurikid dynasty to become the ruler of the Kievan Rus in Novogord and Kyiv. Quite a start for the series.

Honestly, you reacting to the opening is also what got me to finally pick up the show. I binged it over the course of a week with a few breaks to process story points and rage at characters. The cinematography is beautiful and I'm even more excited for season two - character development is my jam! I'm so looking forward to your reaction when this anime starts teaching you more real world history - but most of all, I hope you enjoy the ride!

Wit Studio also animated seasons 1-3 of Attack On Titan. While Studio Mappa (AOT season 4) are currently animating season 2 of Vinland saga.

Interesting fact for you, the singer of the opening - Yosh, was a part of Hiroyuki Sawano's work on several Attack On Titan OST's such as Call Your Name, Barricades, and some of the OSTs for other animes. He is also a part of the band Survive Said The Prophet, which did opening for Vinland Saga, and Banana Fish. Overall, all of them are straight bangers, the guy is very talanted. Hey so, history buff here! I'm so glad you're reacting to Vinland Saga (had a blast binging all your AoT reactions last night!) and hell, might even have a couple more recommendations to give you, but for now: -- The battle in the beginning (the one that took place in 987A.D. and whose name I can't spell for the life of me) is subject of one of the many sagas of legendary Norse heroes, I haven't checked but I think this was about the unification of Denmark. -- Thors is not little, in fact he's a mountain of a man as you can see later on xD The tall guy, in fact, is a total fucking giant and whilst I won't give you his name just yet for spoiler reasons, he is a historical figure and his nickname was "the Tall". -- The show is set during the real-world Viking age, specifically during the 1013-1014A.D. Danish-Norwegian conquest of England lead by king Sveyn Forkbeard and his son whom I'm sure you could just google, but I won't give his name for the same reason as the Tall guy's. This was a time when Norse people were still divided between pagan worshippers of Odin, Thor, Freyr and Freyja, and believers in the Christian doctrine. -- Vinland is indeed a real place, and so is Markland that Leif Eriksson mentioned before. Leif is the original "discoverer" of North America; Markland is, I believe" thought to be the Labrador Paeninsula or New Foundland, and Finland is Terranova Island. -- The main character, Thorfinn, is also a historical figure. Both him and Leif have many statues still standing throughout the places they visited. As to where Thorfinn went, well, it's kinda obvious but I'm still not telling you :pp -- As you've said, slavery and slave trading was a well-established and normal part of life for the people in this era. The Norse got their slaves from wherever they raided all around Europe, the key sources being the British Isles and the lands of modern Ukraine, Belarus and western Russia. As a Polish history enthusiast, it was interesting to learn that the first historical ruler of a united Polish duchy would trade slaves with the Norse all the time even after he was baptised. -- The author of Vinland Saga has poured hours into researching Norse written and material culture, their history and beliefs. This show is essentially the closest look you're gonna get at 10th century "Vikings" in pop-culture, down to the shapes of their swords and patterns on their clothes. In any case, this show is utterly fantastic and I'm sure you're gonna love it, especially keeping your preference for storytelling over action in mind. Have fun, dude!

I started watching Vinland Saga last month. And now i am at Episode 17, I can't deny that this anime is such a masterpiece. So different vibe from other anime and yet, so good . and also opening and closing song are amazing, "Mukanjyo'' "Dark Crow" "Torch" and "Drown".

Vinland is the regions covering the coasts of modern day Newfoundland and Labrador on Canada's east coast. At least thats what I always heard

Vinland was actually a Viking colony in North America, it's the name the settlers gave to that place. Of course they couldn't survive there for a long time, and the new continent was forgot about for more than 4 century.

This show is absolutely based on real history, Vinland is a what the norse explorers called a territory in western canada (new foundland and quebec). The Norse discovered the americas way before columbus in 1000 AD (columbus discovered it in 1492 AD). Leif Erikson was the son of Erik the red from greenland he was the one who landed on north america. Even the battle shown at the start, Hjörungavágr, is a semi-legendary naval battle along the coast of norway look it up on wikipedia. So basically it's all real and historical except it has some anime twists to guide the story.

I fell in love with this show during that ending Dialogue between Thorfinn and Thors with that OST

Thorfinn himself did live too he was an adventurer who traveled to the America's as well

You misunderstood the scene when the slave died. He started seeing "heaven", and he told Thors that. Thors understood and started talking to him about the dream land to make the slave feel at peace while dying. When the slave was in that field with his family - it was heaven (aka Vinland).

Vinland Saga has a good reputation not only for its story, but also for the author's careful research about the Vikings, the historical background, and the costumes and tools depicted in the show. In that sense, it is a work of good quality, so there is no harm in watching this show.

Yes, there are some sagas back during the Vikings about Vinland. How Lief Erikson in the sagas is very similar to Lief Erikson in the anime. Same with Thorfinn from the Sagas to here in the anime. Vinland was a very real place. Vinland is basically America btw. No one's sure tho where the vikings who landed in Vinalnd really was.

This show is based on the the resl Thorfinn Karlseni(name is smt like that) , so is Leif, and the whole waars and story line are fully a replica of real human history, so this anime is a historical anime.

Leif Erikson was a real person and a real Viking/explorer. He discovered Vinland which is known as eastern Canada I think.

Studio Wit is also the same Studio that produced the First Three Seasons of Attack on Titan!
