that strange sound you heard during the violin solo was actually the beatboxer making an inhale "woah" sound. most weird sounds come from him, lol

Hey, welcome to VoicePlay! J. None, the feature (black gentleman sitting next to the bass) is a former fulltime VoicePlay member. He's currently serving a 5 year stint with the US Navy, but when he's on leave and in Orlando he always joins up with the guys again. Brother Bass is Geoff Castellucci (he's also the one who did the vocal arrangement, video concept, direction and editing), and he's his own rabbithole. He has a solo channel where he records covers- and with a 5 octave vocal range, he's able to multitrack his voice and clone his image in video, so he becomes his own (instrument supported) quartet or quintet, hitting lovely, well-supported tenor notes as easily as subterranean bass. The bald rock tenor in the center is Eli (rhymes with 'belly', short for Eliezer) Jacobson, and he's also the lighting genius for nearly all of their videos, as well as providing CGI work on a few videos. Cesar De La Rosa is next- breathy bari-tenor- and he's the most recent VoicePlay member, having joined shortly after J. None left the group. And the vocal percussionist on the far right is Layne Stein, the other half of the arrangement team. He and Geoff take turns creating the arrangements and videos (those two are also original members of the group, going all the way back to 1997- or earlier, if you consider they started singing together in middle school). He's also a lovely baritone vocalist, and yes, that was actually his violin-playing that you heard in this video; he's quite accomplished at the instrument. But his beatboxing is incredible- he makes sounds I've never heard made before, and his inventiveness knows no bounds. Unlike PTX or Home Free, VoicePlay don't really limit themselves to any genre. They perform anything from Disney to rock, metal to Broadway, classical to dubstep (they love a good bass drop- and with Geoff in their arsenal, who can blame them?). They are also 100% independent, unsigned, and everything you see and hear from them is something that they created or had subbed out under their direction (it's worth it to pay attention to their credits; you'll see very quickly how involved they are). Layne is also the co-owner of Pattycake Productions, a video production studio he shares with Tony Wakim, another former VoicePlay member (he was the baritone prior to J. None joining the group). Many of VoicePlay's (and Geoff's) videos are shot there. But wait, you say, that's still only four members. Correct. Their high tenor, Earl Elkins Jr. (another original member) left a few years back for personal reasons, and as yet they haven't found a replacement. But VoicePlay does extraordinarily well using featured artists to fill out their number, and they are blessed with knowing some incredible talents. Rachel Potter, Deejay Young, Adriana Arellano, Emoni Wilkins, Ashley Diane, Omar Cardona and most recently, Anthony Garguila... each of those singers are powerhouses in their own right, but combined with VoicePlay and their prodigious talents, the results are phenomenal. There really aren't any bad songs in their repertoire, but I will say that in the past few years something truly special has happened within their arrangements, and now... who knows where they will stop. They are on an exponential climb, as they somehow keep topping themselves. I feel they are revolutionizing a cappella into something new, and following them on that journey is a breathtaking experience.

Welcome to the incredible journey that is VoicePlay. Geoff and Layne at the ends are original members who met in middle school and started singing together. The two of them arrange about 95% of what they do. Whoever arranges is generally responsible for the project along with Eli, in the middle, who joined around 2010, taking over lighting and digital backgrounds. J, second on the left was their baritone from about 2017 till 2021 when the U.S. Navy asked him to join them to front one of their bands. He is about two years into a five year hitch, but whenever he returns home to Orlando on leave he tries to get in one or two songs with the guys. Fourth person over between Eli and Lane is César De la Rosa who is their most recent member, joining shortly after J left. They are one permanent member short and fill-in with a wide variety of friends and fellow musicians. It’s always great when J returns. They all stay pretty busy. Geoff has a solo channel as well where he accompanies himself and he does use instrumentation usually through a keyboard and plug-ins. Eli is busy in the local music scene and I understand he’s music director for at least one school. Cesar is part of several bands that perform regularly at Epcot. Layne is a co-owner of an independent production studio with Tony who was their baritone before J. (Layne was the original baritone and took over beatboxing when their beatboxer left to pursue an acting career). They have been around for a long time, issuing their first album under a different group name in 1997 just out of high school. They have always featured guest artists (generally placed in the middle) so a lot of times you’re gonna get confused by who these other people are if you go into the back catalog. But any of the videos you watch will always feature Geoff , Eli and Layne. After you have watched for a while, you might consider watching their cover Just Sing, produced just after Covid hit. It was a fundraiser for out of work musicians, all of the revenue went to a local charity for them. It features their prior tenor Earl who was with them from high school through 2020. Then it features a lot of the guest artists that worked with them up through Covid. They’ve taken on a lot of new guest artist since then but it should give you a really nice foundation to see the quality of the people they have performed with. Be sure to put the captions on as it tells who these people were, how they worked with VoicePlay and what else they’ve done Subscribing in anticipation of more by these guys since you seem to be pretty enthusiastic! ( And that weird sound is by Layne who make insane sounds! He goes absolutely insane on their newest release that just came out, Seven Nation Army originally by The White Stripes). And yes, Layne also plays violin. You should check out their cover of Warriors where he and J both have a violin.

J. None is a former member who left the group in 2021 to join the Navy. When he's home on leave he gets back together with the boys and does a video and some minis. Left to right you have Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci(bass), J. None baritone, Eli (rhymes with Jelly) Rock Tenor, Cesar De La Rosa baritone/tenor, and Layne Stein baritone, beatboxer, and VIOLAYNE!. Geoff has his own channel and does LOW Bass covers.

Cesar De La Rosa, the second from the right, is the newest member of Voiceplay and J. None, the second from the left, is a former member of the group who sings with them whenever possible.

This one is my favorite song of theirs that just speaks to me. (I've never seen/heard a dud from them.) They used the black clothing and black stage to honor Metallica's Black Album. VoicePlay from the beginning had a multicultural group. For a while when people came and went, they were sometimes an all white group - looking at the voice for replacements not the color of skin, but it's never mattered to them. Geoff (the bass) has his own channel and recently done "Till Then" (Mills Brothers), Sounds of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel), Man of Constant Sorrow. He started his channel when covid shut down their touring. He has 40 or 50 videos. VoicePlay's in the last 6-8 months has done: In The Hall Of The Mountain King (Edvard Grieg 1875), Hide and Seek (Ding Dong), Dream On (Aerosmith, think it's almost a year old), I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt), Running Up That Hill (Stranger Things), In My Room (Beach Boys), Golden Hour, Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound - gave them 10 raised ale horns out of 10), yesterday they dropped Seven Nation Army ((White Stripes) this one is part of an apocalyptic saga beginning with Warriors, Dream On and (so far) Seven Nation Army. The VoicePlay fan base loves their reactors that will go out of their to do VoicePlay (well over 800 videos) and go down that rabbit hole with them. Most of the fans will follow you anywhere because you give us the opportunity to enjoy a first take again.

"What the hell was that???" The perfect reaction to Geoff ("Jeff") Castellucci hitting us with a Geoff-quake. Beautiful comment on the diversity. We've got Italian with Geoff Castellucci, African with J.None, English(?) with Eli Jacobson, Puerto Rican with Cesar De La Rosa (who is also LGBT), and Jewish with Layne Stein. It's a lovely reminder that music transcends any borders humans put up. It unites us all.

That crazy noise came out of Layne, the beatboxer, aka VioLayne. He's pretty much an alien. All these guys are so talented! They've got some amazing stuff to check out! The guest artist, J None was a part of the group until he was recruited by the US Navy to sing for them. We're all hoping he'll come back full time once he gets out, but he still songs with them every time he has leave. If you like Vikings, check out "Valhalla Calling," also work J None. It's crazy good!

That very low 'noise' is called an inhale growl and Layne, the beatboxer/violinist, is the one who made that sound. He can also do bass. The group in order from left to right is: Geoff (pronounced Jeff) aka the long-haired guy who has a 5 octave range; then the feature artist J.None who is a former member of VP but is currently serving in the U.S. Navy (we are all holding our breath that he comes back to the group after his tour of duty is over); then there is Eli (pronounced Elly like Jelly), the bald guy, a former rock singer who can rock your socks off with his range and abilities; next is Cesar, the newest member of the group who hits high notes like the rest of us breathe, and personally my favorite; and last is Layne, the beatboxer (Geoff taught him how to do it) and master violinist who also can sing bass and has about a 3-4 octave range. Geoff and Layne do most of the arranging of the music and they do all of their own stuff - except mixing - costumes, sets, makeup, etc. Layne & another former member, Tony, have their own sound studio called PattyCake which is where they do most of their recording. I discovered this group about 6 months ago and I still haven't heard all of their music. This is a fantastical rabbit hole to go down. You 'll not regret it. Enjoy!

From left Geoff Castellucci (long hair Bass) also has his own solo channel, J None (Baritone) yes feature but fear not previous member you will see him when you go down the rabbit hole. Also it’s rumoured he will return when out of the Navy, Eli Jacobson (Rock Tenor), Cesar De La Rosa (newest Baritone), Layne Stein (Beatboxer also known as Violayne) They do all the work themselves - set designs, arrangements usually by Geoff or Layne, lights and effects by Eli. Kathy (Geoff’s wife) production manager. Layne and another previous member Tony own a production company that VoicePlay and Geoff solo often film at. They all have amazing ranges as you will discover, sense of humour, they cover all genres and are known as the theatre kids of acapella usually dressing in costumes.

Welcome to VoicePlay! If you like a group with a good bass singer, you've come to the right place! Geoff ("Jeff") Castellucci is an amazing musician - bass singer, beatboxer (he originally taught Layne to beatbox, although Layne has now taken that to stratospheric levels), pianist, arranger, and overall nice family man! He's sometimes called the "gateway drug" to VoicePlay, as many people hear one of his solo covers first, and are then lured into the clutches of VoicePlay. Geoff's lowest recorded note so far is a subharmonic B0 - the 2nd white key on a piano keyboard! In this one, when Geoff isn't actually singing lyrics, he's doing his impression of a bass guitar - except I think he occasionally goes lower than a bass guitar can actually get! BTW: I have a rule of thumb for VoicePlay - if you hear a sound that you can't identify and have no clue what it is - it's almost certainly coming from Layne!

They do everything themselves. Filming lighting arrangements. They have been doing music since 1997. Everything they do is awesome. They have had some member changes over the years so in some older videos they will have some different people in them. The arrangements are done ether by Geoff or Layne. What a great reaction!!! Geoff Castellucci, the bass here, is one of a few well-established bass singers, including Avi Kaplan (formerly of Pentatonix, now has his own channel-and you really HAVE TO check out Change on the Rise), and Tim Foust (Home Free) who are basically legends among younger bass singers all over the world, trying to learn their craft. All three of them are not only extraordinary singers but they also give back-Geoff has some tutorials on his solo channel showing how to hit those crazy low notes, Avi actually works with the A Capella Academy, and Tim not only raises money for veterans’ charities but also sometimes works with up and coming a capella groups, most recently he was a guest singer with The Bass Gang-and he did a cameo for one of the members, Tomi P, when he released his Avi Kaplan Medley (Avi made a point of leaving an encouraging comment). Anyway, welcome to the journey! I hope you will do more by Voiceplay. They never cease to amaze!! And check out the other groups and artists mentioned above.

Hi! I loved what you had to say about diversity, that’s something I’ve felt about them too. But it goes hand in hand with the fact that they are just plain Good People. I wanted to add that there’s more diversity here than can be seen. Cesar DeLaRosa - second from the left - is Latin. I think he’s from Puerto Rico if memory serves. He’s also gay. He flirts endlessly with the straight boys of the group. Ya know how they handle it? They flirt back. No one gets mad or bothered. It’s adorable. Layne & Eli (far right and center) are both Jewish. And, because I find this super endearing….the three straight boys are all absolutely devoted to their wives. Geoff downright glows when he locks eyes with Kathy. I’m all like awwwwwwww every time. Layne will tell you he has four daughters. He married a woman who already had three, and they had one together; Layne says he has four daughters. He sees no difference between them. That is so damn rare. These guys are treasures before we even consider their talent. I really think their wives should form a matchmaking service. Clearly they have detecting marriage-worthy men down to an absolute art form.

Geoff, the bass, is usually the first to draw attention, but I think Layne, the beatboxer, deserves just as much attention. Besides his vocal percussion (which includes so much more than just beatboxing) and occasional violin playing, he has a really sweet singing voice. He’s usually billed as baritone, but actually has a five octave range, as does Geoff. Eli (pronounced Ellie, short for Eliezer) and Cesar also have wide singing ranges, so Cesar billed as baritone will sometimes sing higher than Eli. And Eli has been known to sing the bass part if Geoff is otherwise occupied. (Or Layne, as he did in We Don’t Talk About Bruno ). And to your "speech about politics," as someone else put it, I'm with you, and I love that this group is such a great mixture of people -- Geoff, the bass singer, and Layne, the beatboxer/violinist, were friends in high school -- they started group with other friends. J None, the featured singer, was sitting next to Geoff -- he used to be in the group, but now is in the Navy choir, and they bring him back whenever he gets leave. Eli (rhymes with jelly), in the center, used to sing for a hard rock band, so I've heard. And Cesar is the newest member of the group, who joined after J None left -- he's somewhat younger than the others, but holds his own very well -- he does whistle notes!! And they bring in people of different backgrounds and ages, men and women, to sing with them. They are a fantastic group on their own, and are even better with their featured singers.

11:38 (in your reaction) "What was that sound that he just made?" You can't tell in the video, because they chose to show his violin playing, for obvious reasons; but I'm pretty sure that's Layne, using a beat-boxing technique known as "ingressive phonation". There's a more clear example, wherein you can better tell in the video what is going on, in their cover of Enemy.
