@@Nope-sq6dv Perfect explanation. I feel the same about this song, also my all-time favorite Tool song. It easily encapsulates Tool as a whole into a 6 and a half minute song. If anyone asks to define what the band Tool is, this song is the answer.
JESUS DANNY!! 😆 🤣 I think that says it all, it's crazy how Danny can throw all those fills in at the end and so jumbled but goes together so well, how does he even count all those fills? It's mind blowing......
intuition. he doesn’t use a click track. he just knows.. Nah, but it’s also about having trust in your band mates who are keeping different times, to synch up at the right time. they are always giving each other cues when performing live. you just have to look for them.
It's not even close, sorry it's not and I like other bands too. There are some shred technical prog bands, but how many of those have even decent lyrics, come on now be real. But Tool is the whole enchilada and everything on top. Maynard's genius lyrics and vocal delivery, Adam is so underrated, sick ass bass lines with the foundation laid by D'amour and now Justin put his stamp and signature...and of course Danny, yeah no, it's not close
I've seen them 14 times and am blown away every single time! I know people who only listened to rap gave me a hard time for liking them so much, then I convinced them to just sit and listen, they quickly became a part of the TooL Army after that.
@@dekadenser saw them in January in Anaheim CA. They played The Grudge followed by The patient and preceded by Pneuma. And that was the middle of the set. Tool concert set the bar for all others now.
Damn. Probably the greatest opening track to any album ever… THE GRUDGE!!! I’ve listened to this track tens of thousands of times and the shit Maynard does with it gives me chills each and every single time. This song has a different layer when heard live. Saw them in Vegas a few months ago and Maynard sounded better than ever. He even hit the scream at the end. Unbelievable.
I cant wait for the day you react to the holy trinity, (disposition, reflection, triad.) It's basically 3 songs connected to each other, but no rush 😁 this one is worth being patient for (i recommend reacting to more tool songs before this one though, but that just be my dumb opinion lol)
Reflection is one of my favorite songs!!! I think Aileen will be swept away when she reacts to Parabol and Parabola which you HAVE TO react together just like wings and 10,000 days…
@@couyonuniversity96 I didn't like the song for years, but I have found that now I know the 'story' of the song and have listened to a lot more tool, it's become one of my favourites. The crescendo to the 'joke' in the song is one of my favourite tool moments of any song. Give it another go if you haven't listened to it recently 👍
Absolutely. It's one of the most cathartic and powerful musical moments I've ever heard in my life. "The Grudge" is by far one of the most powerful songs ever
Anyone else think that TOOL, & SOUNDGARDEN are the very best bands to have ever been? Just wandering if anyone else thinks/feels the same way I do.......
I love seeing more Tool on the channel. I would love to hear your reaction to Right in Two. The song gives me major vibes of an 80's German movie called Wings of Desire.
Hey, Luke. Being a German Tool fan, let me give you two criminally underrated German bands and their songs: 1. Die Schweißer - Scheisskind and 2. The Hirsch Effekt - Athesie. Listen. Then tell me what you think 😉
I've spent... two decades (geez) listening to and analysing Tool, but what i still don't understand is how they have such an impossibly high level of production while at the same time sounding under produced. It's just a rock band, it's just a singer, two guitars and drums and while there's effects and layers inserted it's really simple stuff, we're blown away by the complexity of the songs but it doesn't feel like it was scaled up in any way by the production. All i can ever say about it is "some very clever and conscious people worked on this", nobody added something unnecessary, nobody ruined the mix, it's beautiful in its simplicity.
I love the subtle sound at the beginning of the song like turning on a machine, it’s a perfect start to the Lateralus album, a complete epic journey from start to finish. Please check out live version of Pushit on Salival album, showcases MJK’s amazing vocals. Saturn returns full circle around 28 years, which is also around 10,000 days, very meaningful to us and personally to MJK. Loved the reaction ❤️
@@rockstardeath8558 I think it's an analog tape machine starting up. Given what Danny Carey has said what the drum solo is laid over in Faaip de Oiad, it kind of bookends the album in a neat way. For those who don't know, in a 2001 issue of Modern Drummer magazine Danny Carey gave an answer to a question about the final track on Lateralus, "Faaip de Oiad", explaining that it was a "tape machine going down the tubes". If I understand correctly, he decided to press record, and it captured the sound of the end of the machine's life. Over which he played a drum solo, and overdubbed the Art Bell radio show excerpt of a guy who claimed to have worked in or around Area 51.
Can't wait to see your reaction to this one. I've been a Tool fan since seeing them at the Reading Festival here in the UK way back in 1993 when I was only 20 years old. I was lucky enough to see them do this 2 nights ago here in the UK in Birmingham. First time I'd managed to see them live in 20 years since they toured for the "Lateralus" album and it was well worth the wait. Absolutely mind blowing live show. I've been to a lot of gigs and festivals over the last 35 years and seen a hell of a lot of bands in that time , but this was up there as one of the best shows I've ever been to. If you ever get chance to se them live, don't miss it!
26/4-2022 i sa TOOL live in Stockholm... And i was quite speechless after that, im never gonna see a band top that feeling and experience live ever again, unless i get to see them live again.
Please do Lost key/Rosetta Stoned! Crazy goood song and has one of tool’s best bass lines in the middle of the song! Really powerful! Love your reactions on TOOL! You are such a beautiful soul! ❤️
Part of the reason why the snare sounds so extra impactful at that point is because prior to that he had the snare wires disengaged. That gave it more of a high Tom sound. 👍🏽😁
This whole album is off the charts in sound & production. Glad to see you use headphones. You can pick up little things that you wouldn't on just speakers!! 26 second scream.... oh yeah. The Remedy from his band Puscifer is a good one if you want to see a side of Maynard you wouldn't guess. Has some good humor also! 😍
I always interpreted "the scream" as representative of the pain and difficulty of letting go. It's necessary and worth it in the end, but painful during the process because of our resistance to letting things go. Fun fact: Maynard uses a lot of distortion when performing this live... he said if he always performed that scream and the song Ticks and Leeches the way he did in studio, he would destroy his singing voice while touring. Fair point haha. For further recommendations, two of their most popular songs, Stinkfist and Schism, are not only rock bangers, the lyrical metaphors are pretty incredible as well. Great reaction as always 👍
Finally a reactor that understands if you read the Tool lyrics first you’ll have a greater appreciation of the song. After all we wouldn’t want her to have to listen to their songs for 30 years and never fully realize what the lyrics were, or what they meant, until this thing called RU-vid came along and You get to be reawakened by watching reactors and having the lyrics and true meanings of the songs revealed to you. It’s been an amazing experience. Great reaction ☺️ Spiral Out
David Bottril the genius audio engineer behind this album ,after the release of Lateralus someone was asking him ,what does it takes to make a great album like this ? the answer was very simple " you take your time and you have great musicians " period !! Danny's also a great percussionist so tribal !!
I remember being in Gothenburg, Sweden on holiday only to, on the last day of my stay, see that they would perform there the next day. I was disappointed because I had recently discovered them but said that, hey, I'll catch them next time. Then they took a 10-year hiatus. After that hiatus, they finally released a new album in late 2019 - only for Covid to hit the world before I could see them. HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO SEE THEM LIVE, GODDAMMIT!?!?! Someday I'll get to see them.
Look up "your saturn return" the first one comes when people are 27 years old, when most people tend to grow up. The 2nd when people are 54 years old and can trigger a midlife crisis.
Love your reactions. So fun to see someone discover Tool. With the state of the world, Vicarious is a must. Right in Two hits deep. But do you! We are just here riding the spiral with you enjoying every second as you discover them.
Danny is of the only drummers (certainly in rock) to not use the snare wires. Most would consider it not powerful enough for rock but from years of doing that he has found a very unique tone in this genre. Fun fact: Most rock records in the last 20+ years A) either merge or replace the snare and kick with samples for more consistency and control, but at the same robbing them of the 100s of possible tones a well played drum is capable of. And B) track all the musicians to a click track (metronome) so that they don't deviate from tempo. Tool do neither of these so the full range of expression is possible. Most bands actually sound terrible without the studio aids and usually carry them live too, but Tool are plenty good enough to perform 'raw' and pull it off. And all the better for it.
Tool and Rush. That’s pretty much the list that can do without the click. Both bands are anchored by drummers that are rivaled pretty much only by each other. RIP Professor. Really enjoying the channel, keep rocking Tool, would love to see some Rush at some point, definitely an influential band on Tool. Rock on 🤘
Give away the stone the stone Let the ocean take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor Give away the stone Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold The metaphor of a grudge being a heavy burden; stone, lead and/or an anchor just weighing us down while FORGIVENESS is lush life-giving water and personifying these natural elements with verbs like "take" and "kiss" is an absolute master craft in lyrics. "Let the ocean take" exposes an optimistic truth that forgiveness is something that requires very little to no effort. To forgive is to GIVE IN to your inner most primal urges because we are naturally compassionate emotional beings. Holding a grudge is hard stressful work that yields NO reward. It's so poetic it makes me tear up.
I love Opiate, Undertow, Ænima, and 10,000 Days, but Lateralus is by far their best album. It's perfect. The song Lateralus is one of the greatest songs ever written. Yes, I left out Fear Inoculum. It's good, but not great. I feel like it's leftover tracks that were too long for 10,000 Days. Anywho, keep up the great reactions. Enjoying riding along on your TOOL journey!
Man I still remember that magical moment when Maynard brought that scream back for their tour stop here in Utah. That arena was in pure aw. You definitely need to check them out live. Never forget when I 1st saw these guys live. It’s magic af lol
What I know of the snare sound... others may have more accurate information... for most of the song the snare wires on the underside of the snare are not engaged (meaning the wires are not contacting the bottom head and not affecting the sound). This gives the snare more of a high-pitched tom sound with more resonance. Then, the part where you really picked up on the "juicy" snare sound, he does have the snare wires engaged. Nice dynamic change to add to the intensity. I think he also was using a deep brass snare on this one. Not sure the dimensions, but likely at least 6" or 8" deep (4.5" - 5" is "typical" snare depth). Also not sure if he was using the shells made out of melted down paiste cymbals here. That kit was/ is a beast.
If you wanna hear Maynard putting some REAL grit to his voice, listen to Ticks & Leeches. Quite easily the heaviest song the band's ever made. The way I hear it, they were being pressured into doing something "heavier" since the album (Lateralus) was too "soft". They delivered - but they also stuck like two minutes of soft instrumentals smack in the middle to make it as radio un-friendly as humaly possible xD
As you were mentioning the drums early in the song....all I could was smirk......This is the beginning of TooL emerging as the GOAT! The entire Lateralus album needs to be heard....it is the quint essential TooL
I think this was Tool firing on all cylinders, all four members stole the show at one point or another. Danny’s never been more dynamic, Adam was so incredibly expressive, Justin’s interlude between the intro and the verse was gorgeous, and this was Maynard’s most powerful performance.
I love watching reactors falling in love with Tool. It happens like 100% of the time. 🖤 You should check out Pushit, both studio and the live version. They did 2 totally different renditions of the same song, (both are captivating) An unrelated suggestion would be Radiohead, just as a contradiction from your heavier stuff, & since your a vocalist. Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to seeing your channel grow!🖤
Tool makes the intentional artistic choice to put Maynard's vocals lower in the mix. Maynard has said in interviews he wants his voice in Tool to be looked at as another instrument in the band.
That was THE BEST reaction to Maynard's TWENTY-FIVE SECOND scream I've seen yet. It's a monsters. You need to check out Aenema one of these days. That's a great example of Maynard just letting go with his grit and fury ...
Good ear, Danny can actually tune his Drums, sounds odd, drums are drums, but no there are alternate tunings just like a stringed instrument; btw this particular drumkit he named "Bijente", as in a spectral spirit, when Tool received the Grammy for this album Danny thanked "Bijente and Satan"...live at the Grammy's, it was epic...vid on yt of course
Another classic by one of the best in the business! That hoodie looks good on you btw! Check out some Primus and Static-X when you can! Also some The Amity Affliction.
funny thing. all of the instruments are written well before maynard has anything to do with a song, (usually) he puts the lyrics to the music on his own...sitting in a car, there's a great interview where he explains it lol
Love watching new fans of Tool react to songs I've loved for many years; living vicariously, (pun intended), through them. Tool is more of an experience than a band; Spiral Out...
This whole record is pure gold, and I can't wait for you to react to it all; not necessarily just because I want to see your reaction to this batch of songs, but so you can go off, on your own, and just dive into the whole, from start to finish. It's an absolute masterpiece. And just when you thought it couldn't possibly get any better, you discover there's an alternate track sequence for 'Lateralus' known as 'The Holy Gift', where the track listing follows a form of the fibonacci sequence. This rabbit hole goes deep.. keep spiraling..
You are wise beyond your years, love watching your insightful commentary!!!! Here's some TOOL suggestions fwiw: "Sober", "H", "Stinkfist", "Aenima", "Ticks & Leeches", "Invincible", "7empest", "Prison Sex", "Vicarious".
Maynard's scream got so long as he stepped on a Lego while recording... Lol 🌀🤘🌀🔥🌀🤘🌀 P.S. I'm not sure if you've heard Descending already but if not get ready for some goosebumps... As for another TooL fan all I can say... Welcome Into The Rabbit Hole!!! "... Spiral Out! Keep Going!..."
The end scream was almost like 15-16 seconds long, which is really interesting how his vocals were able to hold up for that amount of time. And this is truly one of my favorite songs from him tbh
