Tool - The Grudge (React/Review) 

Slipknot's drummer was amazed in 2019 at hearing the new album. He asked Danny how many layers were in his percussion. He said "That's just me"

Still the greatest album opener of all time.

A lot of people like to say that their favorite TOOL song is the one they are listening to right now and there is a lot of truth in that. However The Grudge is special. It's probably my all-time favorite. An astonishing opener to what I consider the greatest album ever made. The last 100 seconds or so still blow my mind over 20 years later.🤯

That was a 25 second scream btw, when I saw them live last year they did the Grudge and Maynard still managed a decent 13 second scream after having COVID twice.

One of their heavier songs and a stand out on an album of stand outs. Glad you enjoyed. Spiral Out!

22 seconds of a primal let GOOOOOOOOOOOOO … I saw them play this in Dublin Ireland in May 2022. Maynard walked to the back of the podium , grabbed the rails with both hands, looked down, inhaled, walked to the front of the podium and screamed out GOOOOOOOOO … a magic moment in time. Dude you have to listen to Parabol/Parabola BUT DO NOT LOOK AT OFFICIAL VIDEO because it’ll distract from the song 🎶 React to Tool and the Tool army will come … 🌀out 🤘🏼

There is nothing like Tool, and for those of us that like the sound, it is ..... I am just so thankful they exist.

My (current) favorite Tool song is Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. But I will admit, it is a wild fucking ride, so maybe we should save it for later, lol 😅 When it comes to Tool, I'll find myself picking a new favorite whenever I'm revisiting a certain album of theirs. Also, it helps that each album has a distinct personality and flavor of its own.

THE best drummer on the planet. My favorite bassist alive. The best tones and guitar licks I've ever heard. And then there's Maynard the poet and ultimate lead singer. To sum it up - TOOL!

Glad to see you dive into Tool even more. I think I can call myself a fan and with every listen discovering new things, new meanings, new messages. And the instrumentals...come on... Otherworldly. One of my favs songs are this one, The Patient, Parabol/Parabola/Reflections, Jambi, Invincible and I could name them all at this point hahahah. Keep enjoying the Tool spiral.

Rosetta Stoned is truly special. Keep listening. I have 30 years of Tool listening, so it only gets better.

Descending and Lateralus are my favorite Tool songs but by the smallest degree because every Tool song is great!!

"Rosetta stoned" is one of my favorites. I give it 10.000 out of negative 4°. Gotta listen to the intro track.

This one and Descending are my two favorites, but for different reasons. There’s about 15-20 more that are damn near as good too. These guys are the truth 🤘👊

My favorite Tool song is Bottom. It’s a little more angry and straight to the punch. Would love to see you two react to it!

My favorite part is at 5:14 and 6:51 when that snare drops within that momentary pause. Hard to explain how powerful and impactful it is.

Maynard's lyrics are very heavily influenced by the school of Alchemy on this song. I think a lot of people think of alchemists as a King's subject given the task of transmuting lead into gold; or any other lesser metal into a more precious metal. BUT, the true goal of the Alchemist is to transmute his or her attitudes. Transforming the self. Grudges can be transmuted from a major point of contention throughout your life, or you can "LET GO" and transmute that anchor into gold in the process. Speaking more about the weight of the issue (lead/anchor) being transformed into understanding of the issue (gold/light).

Every time I listen to The Grudge, I remember that it is the OPENING track of the album. Really tells you the caliber of the album. One of the greatest of all time.

My favorite tool song is what ever they are currently playing. I’m not sure what you have done so far, but there is sooooo much goodness. Start with the Aenima album and then Lateralis and then 10,000 days. You will be so happy you took the journey.

You can't really go wrong, but some of my favorites (it changes) are Lateralus, Grudge, Parabol/Parabola,Vicarious, Right in Two, Jambi, The Pot. But the best thing to do is listen to all of it starting from the EP!

Descending is my fave Tool song it's off their Fear Inoculum album. If you want a really long song try 7empest off this same album, it's about 16 minutes!

Also, I agree with other comments. This is one of the top 3 or 5 greatest albums of all time. It belongs with Dark Side of the Moon and Abby Road

Aside from just being a masterpiece, I've always said that one of the most impressive things about this song is the sheer balls it takes to start an album with a song like this.

Danny has a jazz drumming background. They call him the "Human Octopus". But you guys should listen to The Patient or maybe Disposition and Reflection but only if you listen to them together because they go together. However as a TOOL fan I don't have a favorite song and I'd suggest starting where it began and just going through the whole album.

funny thing is he did pass out in the booth. scream was supposed to be 28 sec. to coinside with the theme of saturn returning every 28 yrs. but he only made it 24 sec. wimp jambi and pushit are very cool

It's funny that you start out by saying this is a journey because The Grudge highlights the journey going from resentment and holding a grudge to fully letting go. The feeling you had at the end of the song, like you wanted more? It's the first track on the album and it absolutely propells you into listening to more. I highly recommend eating an edible, putting on some headphones and just ride the wave of the Lateralus album. Worth the 78 minutes. I'm a huge Tool fan and my favorite song of theirs is The Patient off Lateralus. Hope you do a reaction on it, it's amazing!

Tool is 4 artists who are masters of their craft

I never listened to tool growing up and I feel like I missed out. Only heard them on the radio and liked it. But never listened to an album. Winter of 2019 before the Fear Inoculum release I decided to catch up on the band. And since 2019 TOOL hasn't not been in my vehicle cd player. Went to 3 concerts of theirs too. I took my kids and my MOM.... she's been to a pink floyd dark side of the moon concert when she was younger. My mom and my kids still bring up how good the concert was all the time. This band is so talented. And they sound so good. Best metal band of all time in my opinion. And that's not even hard to say.

I hope you are able to add Tool into the mix more often, like weekly?! Tool has been my favorite band since I first picked up Undertow and I knew no one could ever top them. Every album and song is a journey like no other and you won't regret the incredible ride down the rabbit hole with them. June 2001, I walk into a FYE music store before my shift at The Cheesecake Factory and they had like 20 or so albums up on the wall with headphones to listen to them before you buy. I see the new Tool album and think the cover art is bizarre yet cool. I toss on the headphones and listen to The Grudge as the album opener. I proceeded to stand there and listen to this whole song thinking it was the best fucking thing I ever heard. Their preceding Aenima album is great but this was just a whole different level of a different kind of awesomeness. I listened to the song 3 times since I couldn’t pause or rewind. I walked in late to my shift because of this song! After I made enough money in tips, I ran over to the store to buy it so it couldn’t sell out. I couldn’t stop listening to it over and over. One of the best songs ever in my humble opinion and I love watching others react to it imagining myself the first time I heard it in that FYE store in 2001. Great reaction!

Fun Fact: I was born in Kentucky, but raised in Ravenna, Ohio where Maynard was born. When my sister moved out of my dads house in Ravenna she lived with Maynard and his mom before TOOL was even a thing. True Story!!

This song stands out to me regarding tool songs because of its visceral, primal power. It fills the blood stream with determination and the desire to lash out of the cocoon that once protected us but now suffocates us until we let it go and burst out of the karmic loop of tough love lessons. ❤️
