Stephen Robinson IKR. My first bike was a 800cc Suzuki Boulevard. No rising experience ever. Just showed up with cash and they showed me the controls and that's it. Needless to say I stalled it a couple of times. I also almost hit a bus cause I was trying to turn like a car. Im just lucky to be alive.

@@stephen.r3304 WIKIPEDIA Much of the art of motorcycle cornering is learning how to effectively push the grips into corners and how to maintain proper lean angles through the turn. When the need for a quick swerve to one side suddenly arises in an emergency, it is essential to know, through prior practice, that countersteering is the most efficient way to change the motorcycle's course.[12] Many accidents result when otherwise experienced riders who have never carefully developed this skill encounter an unexpected obstacle. To encourage an understanding of the phenomena around countersteering, the phrase positive steering is sometimes used.[13][14] Other phrases are "PRESS - To turn, the motorcycle must lean", "To lean the motorcycle, press on the handgrip in the direction of the turn" or "Press left - lean left - go left".[15] The Motorcycle Safety Foundation teaches countersteering to all students in all of its schools, as do all motorcycle racing schools. Countersteering is included in United States state motorcycle operator manuals and tests, such as Washington,[16] New Jersey,[17] California,[18] and Missouri.[19] Safety According to the Hurt Report, most motorcycle riders in the United States would over-brake and skid the rear wheel and under-brake the front when trying hard to avoid a collision. The ability to countersteer and swerve was essentially absent with many motorcycle operators.[20] The often small amount of initial countersteering input required to get the bike to lean, which may be as little as 0.125 seconds, keeps many riders unaware of the concept.[21] "COUNTER STEERING" is NOT push RIGHT to go LEFT, look up counter steering on RU-vid or Google, there are many videos and discussions about it, it is taught at the Highway Patrol academy to Motor Officers . Imagine you are riding down a 4 lane freeway late at night no traffic, you are in the lane next to the slow lane and a big rig hauling double flatbeds with pallets tied down on the back trailer is ahead of you 50 yds or so, the trailer bounces as it goes over an underpass and a pallet breaks loose and hits the ground , spinning and busting apart it is quickly coming at you unless you do an emergency DIVE LEFT! Now imagine you are riding straight ahead and you push / apply pressure on the left handle grip, the bike will fall left, same thing if you push / apply pressure to the right handle grip, the bike will fall right, as the bike falls you add throttle and hang your knee out and hang your ass off the seat trying to keep the center of gravity low as possible, (just like the racers do). COUNTER STEERING is what SPEEDWAY racers do as they slide around corners, cars also do so, like street cars and Quarter Midget racers both are exaggerated example's compared to counter steering a big street motorcycle on pavement. The DIVING aspect of counter steering on a street bike is how we immediately alter our direction. Imagine you are entering a unfamiliar left curve a bit fast, the bike is leaning and the lean angle becomes more extreme as the corner becomes tighter , you think, I entered this corner too fast and you max you lean angle and when you see the arc of your path is not going to make it you do what every inexperienced rider does when they panic in this situation, they brake more and or actually turn the handlebars left, as if driving a car! What this does is aim the rear tire off the road, often times the bike high sides and flips the rider off.

He actually look somewhat agile on the thing. It's just that it seems like he picked up many bad habits during his motorcycle class like only using the rear brake. For beginners out there, the rear brake almost does nothing to slow you down, it's just there to stabilize the motorcycle. Like they say, apply 70% front and 30% rear.

Thats the thought we all "low key have" but when youre out riding try not to think of that because it can ed up screwing with your ability to ride properly. Just as long as you do you, obey rules/laws, youll be fine. But that "what if x car does this and that" will always be in the back of your head. In my opinion, that is where people draw the line between choosing to ride or not.@@jerichostevens2711

I'm sorry, but this dude is absolutely CRUSHING IT for his first time driving on the road. The first time I rode on a road (not in the MSF course) I only went 20 mph and every time I saw a car I pulled over - just doing loops around my neighborhood. It took me a few days to weeks to be comfortable passing cars or going more than 35 mph. Kudos -doing great! Eventually of course all you'll do is road driving on a bike like this, and you'll have to remember to go back to the parking lots and practice MSF course low-speed maneuvers. Too many people forget that part! Enjoy.
@MyLife-og2kr
@MyLife-og2kr 9 месяцев назад
You really gotta have that idgaf mentality when you start riding the motorcycle on the road. I had an accident on my 3rd day of riding going around the neighborhood. At that time, it was purely riding around the neighborhood. Broke my front brake lever, falling off at a stop sign. But after that, I'm like, "F this!" I'm going for it and rode it 15 minutes down the road to my old college and came back. Every stoplight I hit, I was scared shitless, not so much around cars, not sure why. But it was my pride and ego at that time that took me for a ride. 😅

In the UK we have Compulsory Basic Training to avoid situations where riders are on the road with no understanding of how to cancel a turn signal, use a clutch, use brakes properly, obey basic traffic signs...all the things that will stop inexperienced riders from killing themselves or their bike. I love the idea of being able to just jump on a bike and go, but the reality seems pretty far from ideal.

gotta love/hate the german system for that. one is legally "forced" to sign-up at some "driving-school" of choice and undergo a mandatory ammount of theoretic lessons + a theoretic test, followed by mandatory lessons in a car/on a bike with a driving instructor (have to take the driving hours for car and bike seperately even, just as the test). just meeting the minimum needed driving lessons still wont get you to the actual driving test as you have to be signed-up for it by said school you are in, so even if you have, lets say 100 hours on the road and still dont know shit / cant drive safe AT ALL you will never even get to the test in the first place.

Ha ha. Congratulations! I remember my first day riding on the street. It was similar to your situation. City streets and traffic. I was also very nervous. I felt like a naked babe in the wind. So exposed. Big, huge pieces of metal on wheels, all around me. It's some scary shit, dude. People who have never ridden, have no friggen idea. I've been riding for 3 years now. Almost 30K miles on the odometer. I've ridden multi-day trips down to Cali, Utah, Idaho, and Oregon. I've logged 500 miles days. The streets don't bother me at all now. That's not to say, I'm not still very alert and on my toes. If you want to have a long riding career, you must never lose your sense of weariness and distrust of car drivers. With that being said, you don't have to ride scared, either. Ride defensively, and you'll be fine.

I started by just cruising around my neighborhood at ~25 km/h for a week or so until I felt comfortable. Fredric Anderson being humble, and respecting the bikes power works in theory, but when you make a mistake, the bike does NOT forgive your mistake. Imagine this guy on a 600.... not backing off throttle when shifting..... surprise clutch up wheelie, whiskey throttle, imagine the outcome.

After my first road trip i got home and realized that i was so focused on the bike that i wasnt really paying attention like i should have been ugh. Well just have to keep it up. Well gain our confidence and become better riders in time. Till then ill just ride the "slower" roads and let my awareness come with the practice.

Brian Kaiser Congrats on getting the bike on the road. Some advise? I'm 53 and have been riding for 38 yrs, I'm on a 2010 Harley FLHTCU..The advise is that any rider of ANY skill NEEDS to constantly practice emergency braking. Hit a parking lot often and practice stopping quickly (don't use front brake ONLY), practice how to quickly slow down and change your line (you can't emergency brake while turning). In other words, think of as many things you might have to get out of and practice accordingly. This WILL be the most important skill to learn to save your life. 1 more thing. On the road, ALWAYS be paranoid but not scared. Ride like Murphy's Law is out to get you. If someone has the ability to pull out in front of you, act like they probably will. This way when some driver "doesn't see you" while looking straight at you, you'll be expecting it and be ready for it. Hope this maybe will help you or anyone else that reads this.. (I STILL practice once in a while). Good luck and keep the sticky side down.

I've done the training Wolfie did in Canada and also the training in the UK and can tell you that on-road training makes a huge difference. The first level in the UK - the CBT is a 1 day course and only lets you ride up to 125cc. 2 hours of it is on-road instruction - you have a radio earpiece and the instructor is behind you, with a max of 2 students per instructor. It means you actually get to know what you're doing on the road is right or wrong and hone your skills quicker out where you're actually going to be riding.

I bought a 1000cc 4 days ago school is in 2 more days. After trailering it home i stared at it for 2 days then am hour before leaving for work i told my girl i can't do this anymore I have to try cause its driving me crazy thinking about it and the anxiety is causing. I drove high power manual cars for years so i understand the concept of clutch and shifting but not a mc. So i got going and drove around the block in 1rst gear for about 15 minutes and thinking about shifting was too much for first time lol when i get off my hands were shaking, but i felt great. So today again i go out with same intention and for days I've been watching tons of mc teaching videos. So i jump on and zip off immediately shift to 2nd then 3rd and down again for 30 min. Finally got the grasp of turn radius lol. I'm beyond excited to go to school and practice on lower cc cause 1000cc isn't the learned bike but my confidence after today is beaming. So much props to this guy just going for it. Some people just need to do it, I'm definitely one of those.

Clutch control. What you should do before you ride (especially your first time on a bike you're not familiar with), is in first gear, feet flat on the ground (if you're tall enough), slowly release the clutch until you start to move forward, then pull it in and rock back to where you were before the very short roll. That will give you a good understanding of that "sweet spot." Eventually, muscle memory will know where exactly when power starts to go to the rear wheel based on how clenched and/or opened your hand is. For shifting, let off the throttle, pull in the clutch, upshift, SLOWLY release the clutch so power starts to smoothly push the bike forward, then start to ease on the throttle. It'll take a while to finesse the rhythm of balancing clutch and throttle, but it's about knowing that clutch and using it to control the power. Control of power, equals control of the bike.

Congrats, mate, this is a perfect video. I'm 31 and have been 'buying' the bike for the last 12 years. There's always something more important to do. College, get a decent job, got married, worked on our first house, 1 child, twins, now working on our 2nd house. Once it's all done in about a month, I'll finally start to save up for gear, licence and a bike. So I searched for videos like this and I'm really glad I found this. Sure, your riding here is terrible, you don't seem to have any idea what you're doing at the beginning, but the sound of joy and enthusiasm in your voice. That's exactly why everyone who rides - rides. At least that's what I thibk and it's surely why I want to ride.
