Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, Canadian classic prog rock guitar teacher on RU-vid. I grew up on classic 70s prog but abandoned it in the late 80s. Prog seemed dead and my orig. prog band was told by labels we were too prog. So i went onto grunge, pop, then folk, then strictly acoustic solo guitar etc...staying loyal to my staples like Yes and Rush, BUT 2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery that SO much great prog went on that I'd totally missed out on. So join me as I catch up on 30 years of prog!

You can't easily place the singer's voice ... Because everyone sings in Mastodon. Only one of the two guitarists does not sing, all the other members take turns singing. Each has a part depending on the type of voice required.

Brent Hinds the lead guitar sings the first few verses in these, he kinda have that Ozzy-Osbourne-esque hollow vocals going on. Troy has a much deeper voice and mainly sings in that hardcore-esque shouty vocals. Brann has a higher register.

First time I ever heard them was in concert '06 when they were supporting Slayer. The only band I really came for that night was Lamb of God but Mastodon were the only one that stuck with me after I left. Immediately bought Leviathan the next day and they have been one of my favorites since. Saw them play Crack the Skye straight through on that tour as well (also had Between the Buried and Me and Baroness at that concert, one of the best I've ever experienced). Watching Brann Dailor play drums live is an otherworldly experience.

This kind of stoner metal is called "sludge" - epic, heavier and often more progressive and intricate than regular stoner rock. For another great band in the "genre" try Baroness
@LordSpongy
@LordSpongy 3 года назад
Baroness is so gud but they are dense and each song sort of has a learning curve. Does that make any sense? I do not know how else to describe it. You have to actually listen and not just try to find a groove to bop along to (not that Dean would listen to a song just to bop his head, im just describing how Baroness took me a long time to grow on and now I love them.)

Dude, if you're doing stoner metal you gotta listen to The Sword. Them and Mastodon are like the OGs. I reccomend anything off of Age of Winters or God of Earth which are both almost entirely based on Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire. Not many bands can pull of basing albums off of books but Wolfmother does a lot of LOTR and Mastodon did Moby Dick so anything is possible lol.

YES. Crack The Skye is up there with the first 4 Mars Volta albums for me. They did something really special here. Songs like Ghost of Karelia are just sublime. I was always surprised at how cohesive this record is, like it's hard to square the fact that it's four people and not one. In a different way to how on volta records, you do get a sense that there's many people throwing what they've got at it and it can be very chaotic.

That's pretty interesting, since most reactors out there usually start their Mastodon journey with "Oblivion", the opening track of this album. You started with the last - longest and "busiest" - track. And you got the point pretty quickly: it does sound quite psychedelic on purpose, since this album represents the element "aether" (most Mastodon albums roughly represent an element, such as fire, water, etc.), not to mention things like astral travel, which is part of this album's concept. As many have said here, it's Mastodon best album (at least for me it is) and it truly deserves a full listen/review. I've seen many people comparing Brent Hinds' vocals to Ozzy's, but everyone in this band sings. Bassist Troy Sanders always shared lead vocals with Brent since the beginning of the band (you can hear him in this track on sections such as "ghost of man..." and "will he save me.."). Drummer Brann Dailor started taking lead vocal duties as well in this album. Rhythm guitarist Bill Kelliher usually performs backing vocals. So it's quite interesting to see everyone having a contribution and making the sound more diverse. "Crack the Skye" is usually considered an album that divides Mastodon's career. There's before CTS, with the band playing a much heavier sound with growling vocals, then there's after CTS, with them playing a more melodic brand of music with clean vocals. There's a lot of good stuff to be found on both eras. You mentioned the drummer here... Brann is quite contained in this album, actually! He used to be totally unleashed during the band's first era lol, and he's a beast at what he does. In all honesty, everyone in this band is pretty good at what they do.
