First Time Towing With Airbags

I recently installed a set of airbag helper springs on my 1990 C1500 truck. Perviously I had towed a car hauler with a 2000 Honda Civic loaded onto it and found that my truck wasn’t quite up to the task. I installed a set of air bag spring helpers and it made a huge difference.
In this video I talk about those experiences and how I feel they have improved my trucks towing capabilities.
*DO NOT EXCEED THE WEIGHT LIMITS OF YOUR VEHICLE* but the installation of these air bags can greatly increase your trucks towing capabilities, making it safer and easier to drive when loaded.

You can lock a steering wheel in place with the seatbelt by pulling all the way out, pulling seat all the way forward, wrapping seatbelt around steering wheel as many time needed until able to click it into fastener and then sliding seat back.

I had a similar problem with towing my bike on my trailer with my old Pontiac grand am. Car was lowered a bit, and had my tool box and army gear in the trunk. Destroyed the original bump stops from bottoming out. Ordered a set of helper bags for it and made a world of difference. The car had a factory tow rating of 1000lbs, and the bike/trailer combo was maybe 750-800lbs.

I would install an air tank, compressor, gauges and all that so everything can be controlled from inside the truck. The onboard air system would also help for these towing applications for when tires are low or something like that.

This video, mainly the part where you talked about the pressure in the bags, just furthered my opinion you need a lighter trailer. Also, I think you would be very surprised how little difference in weight there is between the Integra and the 51 Chevy (The 51 is lighter than the TL). I do remember you saying he had a bunch of parts for it too, but I'm not sure it'll add up to that much difference.

This is incorrect. I have sone extensive testing with this Aspect and to my surprise it remained the same in curves. I have the max air 5000 load helpers and I tow a lot of heavy equipment and hay. I carry 95 psi in my bags when hauling heavy. I have them both tied together into one shrader and have never had any problems.
@rdspeedfab
@rdspeedfab 3 года назад
@@Cake41579 I appreciate your opinion. I’ve been messing with air ride for almost 30 years. Put gauges on the corners. You’ll see it’ll absolutely transfer load. It’s physics... no way around it. You may not notice it if your rig is heavy enough but it absolutely pushes load to the un loaded side
@Cake41579
@Cake41579 3 года назад
@@rdspeedfab I’ve had gauges on both sides with check valves in place to capture any air that would bleed from one side to the other. I am a cattle farmer and have been hauling heavy, HEAVY loads for the past 20+ years almost daily. With lower pressures below 20 lbs, yes, I did experience a slight bleed over from one bag to the other. Pulling a 24 foot stick trailer, empty, it bled 2 lbs to the passenger side on the interstate at 70mph in a fairly sharp curve in the mountains of West Virginia. I conducted experiments such as this with the steel 24’v gooseneck stock trailer, 28’ gooseneck flatbed, 16 foot lowboy bumper pull and all of them showed minor bleed over in the time frame I was doing the experiments as long as I maintained pressures above 20 lbs. like I mentioned above, I generally carry 90+ psi when loaded. Running empty I only carry 20-40 psi depending on the trailer in tow. I was having trouble trying to conduct an accurate test at first is why I installed the check valves on one bag at a time so it would only allow the air to bleed from one side to the other. It is a complicated experiment and to obtain accurate results required a lot of head scratching and trial and error. I’m guessing the higher pressure wouldn’t bleed over because of the resistance of the greater amount of pressure in the small area. If the bags were of larger size I’m sure the bleed over would’ve been more pronounced but the average size 3/4 or 1 ton pickup uses the same size I was using to conduct the exoeriment. Maybe I was doing something that was heeding false results but I done the best that I know how to get accurate results. 20 psi or less, yes there’s bleed over. 20 psi or more was hardly even a big enough variation to even record.

Love the way you Yanks call utes trucks. Kinda like the way the British call trucks Lorrys. Here in Straya we call em utes, from the term "utility vehicle" That said, some of the utes in American are bordering on actual trucks with their size and weight. An actual truck, is somthing like say an eighteen wheeler, or a, err truck. 🚛 😜

What a difference... Especially nice to see that you were only around 55psi as loaded. It's definitely never going to pull 20k...but 5-7k should be quite manageable loaded properly. That on the fly tuning is an awesome feature of your setup, and all those fluid Temps were solid as well. Congrats on the fun truck with a standard duty towing option. Definitely gives you a lot more time to find the right heavy duty towing rig if you end up deciding you need that capability in your fleet. Thanks for sharing!

If you buy a weight distributing hitch with a sway control, a.k.a., an equalizer hitch, dads truck will have no problem hauling dads other truck. Harbor Freight has a Haul Master weight distributing setup rated to 10k lbs. for under $400. I'm an owner operator truck driver so here's little tip on backing a trailer. Steer toward trouble. In other words, turn the steering wheel (a little at a time) in the direction of the obstacle that you're trying to avoid.
@aterack833

That’s good for two things, extra heavy loads where the rear suspension alone can’t handle it and extra sensitive light loads where the towing vehicle has too aggressive of a rear suspension and it pummels the trailer otherwise

Another consideration on heavier loads is a load distributing receiver hitch with torsion bars. This distributes the weight of the trailer thorough out the frame of the truck instead of just at the hitch. you can increase your tow load by 2-3,000lbs safely so long as your braking system is on par and properly adjusted. And of course, never tow in Over Drive! Zip~

I HAD a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500, and we bought our first camper 6 years ago. A heavy camper. It was just under max weight for towing with that pickup. I had to add air bags to the rear suspension. THAT and the sway bar hitch really helped make a difference. 3 years ago I finally got the opportunity to upgrade the pickup to a Duramax 2500HD. It was day and night difference towing experience. Recently, in June, we had a major hailstorm that totaled the camper. Now we want to upgrade to a fifth wheel. From what I understand most guys tow with a 1 ton for fifth wheels. Now I am wondering if I add air bags to the 3/4 ton if that would help and benefit me by not having to purchase yet another pickup. The engine and transmission are the same, just different suspensions right ? LOL here we go again. At least I know better than to max out towing weight. I can tow up to 14k lbs with the 3/4 ton, so I’ll be looking for a fifth wheel in the range of 9k lbs to 11k lbs. Any thoughts ?

I had a '50 Chevy 4 dr when I was in college, in NY then, registration was based on weight, I remember it was 3250 #s, I doubt if your accura is less than about 2400#s, so I think that your estimate of the addition weight of your father's '51 chevy is overestimated. While those cars were larger, a lot of it was blue sky, waisted space.

I guess you can separate each side of the truck with different air pressures. I have run a Kenworth semi truck with 8-bag air suspension and it is a shared air pressure with all the air bags having the same air pressure and have never had a problem with rolling over. Its amazing how some people overthink little things like this. Shared air is just fine. Maybe if one side of the truck is always considerably heavier than the other, one could have more pressure in one side over the other but otherwise don't worry about it. In my case of towing 44,000 to 54,000 pounds net weight at a time again I say there is no problem with the same pressure in all air bags.

I feel much more secure pulling a car trailer over a car dolly, especially on the highway with a pickup truck. One thing I would recommend is putting some significant weight in the bed of the truck. Otherwise, the car on the dolly or even the trailer has more control over your load. Think about how your truck acts in the snow without weight in the bed of the truck. Be Safe; Stay Dirty.

I use dollies a lot, but I tow with peugeot 407 sw, with a v6 TD in it, lots of power, but a trailer just messed up the behaviour on highways, dollies sorted that out and no weight on the tow ball, no suspension squash, and I have air suspension on it :) Good job on this one.

connecting the two lines is a bad idea when you corner air will transfer from the bag with more pressure like if you turn left the right rear will apply more load to that bag and transfer to the bag with less load making it handle worse through corners like a reverse sway bar i added bags to the back of a amc jeep with a 10 inch lift and you could really tell we installed them to help with the body roll it made it worse and you could tell once we isolated them how much better it handled

Eric I commend you for keeping an automatic transmission in the truck per your wife’s driving preferences as you mentioned previously. I’m sure you’re probably kicking yourself now for that since you’re towing cars with it. But I guess happy wife happy life. As for your dad’s Chevy, honestly yes I would still recommend renting another truck to haul that car. It just seems like a very long journey for that and I would hate to see your dad’s truck meltdown again due to another catastrophic failure. Just my thoughts

Actually, automatic transmissions are preferred for hauling heavy loads. They support more power, and shift smoother with less power loss. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FDRq4DwDC6s.html Thanks for the comment.

@5:01 also when you make turns with a y connection the air will push out of one bag into the other causing more roll. always best to have them seperate.

I've heard that they are great while loaded but when the truck is empty or there is no trailer, they are really rough riding. Is that true?

A few weeks ago when you were contemplating what to do I mentioned our truck had air shocks. I meant air bags! I'm glad you went with air bags rather than listening to me, lol. But yes, they are great. I also think keeping individual lines is important for the reasons you stated and the concerns others have noted.

I dig that you made two Schrader Valves. Because of where the tank is in those trucks I figured that was a huge part of your reasoning. I've worked on a few of those trucks and it always bugged me the tank was off to one side lol.

@@ariyanadumon4549 nice, here’s a tip, avoid trying to put a twin turbo 6.5 diesel in it in the snow without proper tools and with what turns out to be a “rebuilt” engine that someone forgot loctite and torquing to spec on XD also if wiring or electrical issues crop up, fix them all at once and chase any possible issues (mine burnt out starters and alternators of it’s own and any vehicle to boost it)

I thought of using a tow strap, but was having difficulty figuring out where to attach it. The only time it was an issue was when I took a tight turn. Driving straight it wasn't an issue. Thanks for the comment.

Another reason not to plumb the bags together is while turning with weight in the back all the air will move from one bag to the other.

General question… are there significant risks in towing something that exceeds your vehicle’s tow capacity by less than 1,000lbs? We have a 2WD suv that can tow 3500, and we are looking at a trailer that will likely exceed that once loaded, but its unloaded weight falls within our tow capacity’s range. (I’m not a car guy at all, for what it’s worth!) Thanks!!
@bushratbeachbum
@bushratbeachbum 2 года назад
If you're unexperienced in towing, definitely be very cautious. With experience in towing in spec it's a little bit safer to push the limits but without experience, it can go wrong very, very quickly. If you do tow the load, make very sure that the load is correctly distributed and drop your speed, look further ahead and react to changes in conditions gradually, erratic or dramatic changes in speed or direction will cause issues.

So wonderful to hear some positive news! I'm so pleased your efforts have paid off. I completely agree that separate air controls are the way to go - makes it easy to compensate for any uneven loads. I couldn't wait to watch this video... and I don't even own a truck! Just goes to show that it must be the company that keeps bringing us back. Still the best on RU-vid.
@ETCG1
@ETCG1 4 года назад
Thank you for that. Having separate air lines also makes it so that the air does not pass between bags during cornering. That could make it unstable in the turns. I'm glad the truck did what I needed it to do. Now I can focus on getting my sons car up to speed and back to him. As for the '51, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. As always, thanks for your comment.

@@ETCG1 I was wondering, have you considered a central fill with one way vales to both sides to make casual filling easier? Retaining the separate fill points for finer control. Sounds good in my head at least.

The bumper was full of dirt in the back.
