The best buko for drinking is the young one, where the meat is thin and even translucent. It does have a sweeter taste than that matured coconut you had. Nevertheless, the coconut water’s isotonicity with blood plasma makes it ideal for fluid & some electrolyte replacement…meaning to say it’s healthy for you. I’m pretty sure the coconut you had is probably good for putting halo halo in it or any other desserts like ube macapuno con hielo or even buko salad, etc. You should even try a “sprouted” coconut. I hope you can try it all! 7k+ islands means 7k+ more reasons to come back and visit lol…and 7k+ more content too haha.

Actually tama ka yan din napansin ko sa buko na binili niya, di ko alam kung ano term niyan sa ibang provinces pero sa province namin sa samar kapag young pa yung buko tinatawag namin yan as "Silot" kapag katulad na nung kinain ni sylvia "Lubi" or Buko na talaga tawag namin sa ganyan.

The real tasty coconuts are the young ones. A coconut that huge probably is already old, has hard pulp instead of jelly-like and the water inside is more diluted.

They gave you "niyog" already 😂 that is used in making bukayo already. When buying buko ask them to give you "Murang buko" the one with soft flesh.

The one you bought is mature kind or not fresh in tagalog we call it niyog. In Niyog you can make it like a coconut milk or coconut syrup. the soft flesh of buko is the one for drinking and the water is sweet taste.

for coconut juice... when buying choose coconut that has almost no meat on it... coz the more older that coconut the juice will be (turn)/converted into the meat ( thats why, when you want more juice and more tastier juice, choose coconut that has less meat on it or a young coconut basically)... :)

If it doesn't taste it means the coconut is quite old and the color is turning light brown,,, if you want a sweet coconut juice pick the green one if you like coconut meat pick the old one for sweet taste

I think foreigners are used to the taste of a mature coconut (niyog). Coconuts age when they get transported to other countries as it takes a while for them to reach their destination. If I can remember correctly ate sylvia w jessica tried coconut juice in SoKor but they didnt like the taste of it because obv it's a mature one.

You should have asked the seller to curve the outer part into a spoon so you can scrape the coconut meat inside. Coconut meat is good but the coconut water is the best as it cleanses your body specifically the urinary tract especially if you're experiencing UTI (urinary tract infection) it helps a lot.

Glad you like our Buko Sylvia! Try our Buko Pie too if you ever get a chance to go to the province of Laguna south of Manila. There's a UP too in Los Banos Laguna as well as the National Arts Center (Mt. Makiling). Some sidewalk vendors also sell iced Buko Juice which usually has some condensed milk and sugar mixed in. No waves, no waves. That's what the Korean flight stewardess were telling me when I flew via ASIANA. They said they like waves.

I’m glad some friendly staff changed your mind about Filipinos. Just smile and say HI to folks who stare (mostly because they think you’re beautiful). It is fairly safe- REALLY! Just have some street smarts. Tip: Grab drivers have been sitting it out due to high gas prices. But if you feel unsafe, try later- have coffee or something. Try to check out BGC… high end Manila or Business District of Makati. BGC is better in my opinion. When you’re more comfortable, there are cool places in old Manila like Fort Santiago or the world’s oldest Chinatown in Binondo. Please please enjoy. You’ll love the people and places.

That coconut is already what we called "ALANGAN" ,means It's already matured and a little bit hard ,unlike the buko called "MURA" ,MURA is the soft one, sweet,and legit baby coconut

You should buy the young coconut the one you had is already old plus the meat is already hard the one with soft coconut gel taste good and sweet and there's two different kind of coconut if u get the macapuno that one is good you had the regular one anyway for the experience

Try young coconut next time. The water has more flavor and the coconut meat is more tasty. You had an older coconut which is why there hardly was any flavor and the meat was thicker. Some stores would actually chill the coconuts or take off most of the husk (green surface) before selling them that way you get a cold refreshing drink when you buy it.

In my neighborhood in QC, ate always check if its sweet. She will serve well. It was the best ever had. Idk why she gave you non sweet ones.... im not saying because you're foreigner.

Hi Sylvia, you should asked the vendor to place the juice of the buko in a plastic sleeve or disposable cup after tasting it and have the meat placed as well in the plastic sleeve and not worrying carry the heavy buko! 🌴

You must try Buko, the "Mala-uhog" one. Malauhog literally means "mucus like". So it is more softer and more flavorful than the one you are drinking. You can ask the Buko Vendor "Magbu-buko" to give you "Mala-uhog" variant. Enjoy :)

that is not a " murang buko" anymore. that is most likely what is called bukayuin. meaning to be cooked into a bukayo or coconut caramel

Next time, ask for "mala-uhog" as it's the youngest buko, thin meat like it's jelly, and the water tastes sweeter and distinct.
