FIRST TIME WATCHING Friends - Season 2 Episode 8 "The One with The List" 

I think the reason Rachel is so upset is that it's one thing to recognise your flaws and someone else see them too, but it's a step further to find out that person you love was using these flaws as a possible reason to not be with you and be with someone else. Yes he chooses Rachel despite them but it wouldn't make it hurt any less. It will make her feel like she's not good enough. She wants someone to love her flaws and not see them as that, and especially doesn't want that person to broadcast them. Maybe her reaction is over the top but it's fitting with her character and I understand it.

I get why Rachel's upset by the list. But her character is still developing at this early point in the show. In the first episode, she was more spoiled, living off her parent's money & very inexperienced in the real world. And I think her reaction to the list is more than how others would react because she is insecure about these flaws. But the writers are clearly trying to do this "on again off again" thing with Ross & Rachel which is why they came up with The List because they didn't want Ross/Rachel together yet at this point in the show I think the fact that she doesn't know the context behind some of the cons on the list also makes her react worse i.e. the fact that it was Chandler's idea, the fact that Joey mentioned the chubby ankles.

Not to be SPOILERY: but this is one of the times I agree with Rachel in an argument. I don't necessarily think what Ross did was unforgiveable but it was definitely stupid and hurtful. It's not so much that he realizes her faults but putting it down like that is a pretty mean thing to do. I just don't think Rachel's self-esteem could handle it. She is spoiled, etc. but she's also pretty young and on her own for her first time, and it's got to be disheartening when someone you love so frankly points out your flaws like that. Honestly, I think what she needs is space afterwards more than anything.

Sorry but Dillon is so off about this. Someone you love making a list, writing out all your negatives and flaws, demeaning your body and your social standing saying you’re “just a waitress” is a very valid reason to fall out with someone. Rachel isn’t spoiled for being upset about that, she very simply has self respect.

If I found out my significant other discussed my flaws with his guy friends to weigh my worth against other women, I'd be hurt and humiliated too.

You definitely don't understand Rachel yet, when you do she hopefully won't annoy you so much. She was already jealous of Ross and Julie, so the fact that Ross made a list comparing them after having shown up at her work and kissed her made her feel super insecure in his love for her. And to see someone you love write a list of all the things they think are wrong with you is hurtful. The "just a waitress" is elitist and a low blow - she is in the process of reinventing herself from the person she thought she was going to be (a dentist's wife and not having to work at all) to the person she will become. To knock her current job on that journey is wrong, of course that would hurt her. And the chubby ankles comment hurt her because women are so often judged by how we look, she's worried he won't find her attractive enough to stay with her long-term if he's already noticing parts of her body he doesn't like.

People who doesn't get why Rachel was upset are stupid. Everyone has flaws but no one would like that the person who loves them think about them and lists them as cons. Thats not what love is.

It’s good that you’re comfortable with who you are, that a list wouldn’t affect you. But for people that are insecure, that’s one of the worst things that can happen. The person that you love and trust, that you don’t think would ever hurt you, has taken the time to take all your insecurities and put them on a sheet of paper. Making these insecurities that they have felt inside something tangible. Used it as something against you. As a reason to not be with you. She’s completely justified and being upset. Try dating someone and writing all the things you don’t like about them, and then showing them. That person is not going to be like, oh I forgive you because I love you. It would hurt them. Deeply.

Is too soon, but you are going to have a lot of surprises, TEAM RACHEL.

IMO Rachel was completely in the right this episode. If someone really took the time and sat down to make a list of all the things he hate about me, and my biggest insecurities would be on that list... I'd have too much self respect than to date him. It's not being spoiled, it's having self respect.

Ross is literally the worst person. He causes almost all major conflicts in the group, and then handles them TERRIBLY.

i think Rachel got so hurt over the list because she’s very insecure. she’s learning to be an adult still since it’s an early season. she probably also grew up around “yes people”. like people just hyping her up her entire life. so for the first time ever she’s realizing what the real world is like

In case anyone was confused, Ross wasn't trying to demean Rachel by saying that she was just a waitress. The context was that Ross and Rachel have different jobs and like Ross, Julie works in Paleontology.

Oh don't diss Phoebe . She might not be a rock star but she is doing something she loves. I like some of her songs they are catchy. They are about her life and her friends life. She does not care about the money or whatever. It's her having fun.

I understand Rachel. If a person that loves me thinks about the reason they wouldn't be with me and that includes my job. That is not forgivable. She should have let him explain but putting waitress as one of the reasons is not it. And saying ross left Julie for Rachel well it was Ross's choice and Rachel doesn't owe ross to get with him. Yes, it is great that ross loves her despite the flaws but having your flaws displayed like that is not a great feeling.

Girls get pretty privilege, you’ll find that more true as the show goes on and Ross is constantly mocked and Rachel’s awfulness is constantly excused. To be fair Ross’s character is crazy later on lmao

1st computer I had was a radio shack color computer with FOUR kilobytes or RAM. That is KB not MB or GB. There was no hard drive. You had to connect a tape recorder to the computer to save programs. It did have a cartridge slot for games/purchased programs.

When there are enough people in the world putting you down the last thing you expect is the one person that loves you writing down your faults. I can see it being very hurtful. Especially putting down her job which Rachel was so proud of getting because she was a spoiled brat and had never worked in her life. I think she should have sat down and talked it through with him and expressed how she felt instead of cutting him off completely but Friends is a comedy not a melodrama lol!

First of all you had to make a list? . If he loved her since high school then he would be with her no matter what . If there was a chance to be with the person you love ypu do it. Yeah he was in a re and that's not good, but if he was actually honest with Julie shevwouod be hurt but she would understand. How would you like it if someone called you everything on the list, and tired to hide it from you. Yeah he wants to be with her just to call someone just a waitress, she is too into her looks, he is not smart, and spoiled after everything she been through. He dad cut her off and she did not know anything. Yeah she struggled but she is trying, working her ass off.

I like Rachel, you just have to understand her point of view.

Rachel is pissed because he made a list. Not because of the things he said. If you ever had to make a list to decide if you want to be with someone that really is very offensive. And it means he doesn't actually love her for her. He choses her because it is the better choice. That isn't love.

I'm with Dillon on this one. Rachel really needed to cool down and work it out with Ross. And not make a scene out of it in front of everyone. But yeah, that's a TV show that needed drama.

i'm completely on rachel's side on this one. you just don't make a list pointing out someone's flaws, comparing them to some other woman and use that to determine who to choose. imagine being insecure about something and having someone you love use that as a reason to potentially choose someone else over you. it's different when you consider serious things like whether you have the same values or future goals and decide if you want to be with someone based on that. that's understandable and important. but with trivial things like those on the list? no. that's just demeaning.

I had no idea that so many people were on Rachel's side in the list argument. I've always been on Ross' side in this case. It makes perfect logical sense to me. I'd only be mad if there were no pros or just one.

You're pissed at Rach, while I'm still pissed at Ross. Continue to watch, you'll understand why.

There were times I really couldn't stand Rachel. I found her sooo annoying but I do understand why she's so hurt by that list even though all of those things were true.

I LOVED "How to Get Away with Murder"! Great show! Since you watched Big Bang Theory and are familiar with Kaley Cuoco, you should watch the HBO Max Original series "The Flight Attendant." She is OUTSTANDING in it.

Na it really does depend on the person. Males can ve graphic in sex talk too. I have a buddy who is not shy in deacribing sex details, let's just say tightness of the woman etc. When it comes to close friends women are more likely to give/ask for details vs in social groups due to stigma that women need to be proper. No one bats an eye if a man is heard talking sex say in a bar but with his close buddies hes more likely to say yeah we hooked up

Rachel was humiliated by the person who should love her the most. She's not wrong in this.

Dillon the reason Rachel reacted like thar is bc she loves Ross so much it hurts to find out he SEES the same flaws in her that she does.

Ross disrespected and humiliated her. And claiming to "love" her. Dillion, your blind hatred for Rachel is messing up your sense of right and wrong.

What some people don't realize is that we make these lists all the time just in our head. It's unfortunate that Rachel found it and read it but whenever we are meeting someone for the first time or starting a relationship everyone goes over the pros and cons of the person you are with, it's how you identify red flags and find your limits. We even put these preferences ON our dating apps to attract the people we want. Sadly, she didn't get the context of what was said. Ross said "Just a waitress" in comparison to Julie who is in the same field as him so it's something they have in common. And Ross didn't even comment on the ankles thing when it was said. To just see these things written out would be shocking and hurt for sure but I don't think there was anything bad behind it. At the end of the day even if he doesn't want to be with someone who is spoiled, that's his choice (and I don't blame him), if he doesn't like chubby ankles.. that's his preference. But yeah just unfortunate she saw it that's all.

Obviously Dillion I get where you're coming from about despite Rachel having flaws, Ross still wants to be with her. It's not that black and white, it's hurtful and insulting to write a list of the flaws of the person you love and care about. If someone I cared for did that to me, wrote my flaws down on paper, flaws I know I have and am not proud of, tell u truth I would be hurt. And when a person you love, does that. It hurts more than anybody else can, because you have that ability to do so. If you hate Rachel now, you are in for a tough ride for future storylines involving Ross and Rachel. Disagree with me if u like by all means. but give yourself a chance to warm to her character.

Why is everyone on Rachel’s side here ? Ross said himself he wanted to be with her because he doesn’t care about any of those little flaws.

Women make these pros and cons list all of the time, but they keep it in their head. Ross isn't doing anything that all girls do, but seeing it on paper makes it worse.

Who in their right mind sits down to write a list of everything that they find is bad about the one they claim to love? I'm not angry at Rachel for this, but I don't like her in general so I don't really care.

I understand Rachel's POV. It's not really much about what was on the list that matters but the context of it and who made it. Rachel already knows those things about herself, maybe even hates it about herself. But to discover that the one she chose is unsure if he will pick her because of those things feels like a betrayal of some kind. Let's take her job for example. Rachel is a waitress and she may not like being one but it is far from where she came from - a spoiled rich kid who relies on her father and was ready to marry a man to support her financially. Yet, Ross puts it as a "CON" which means he sees "being a waitress" as something unattractive about someone. He thinks that Rachel being a waitress bears so much weight that it has to appear on this list. And even if he chooses her "INSPITE" of that, the fact still remains - he thinks she is inferior in the "job" department because she is "JUST A WAITRESS". Imagine if someone wants to marry you even if you are "JUST a WAITER". That kind of thing would stick in your head every second of the relationship. You'd always think about how you could make yourself "appear better" and that's not what relationships are for.

Honestly, Rachel character annoys me a lot but in this episode I could totally see her side and why she is upset. If someone wrote your biggest insecurity on a paper, you would definitely be upset too. Its hurtful. I understand that he just broke up with Julie but Ross should have not said those things, especially not wrote them down for anyone to see. Ross is in the wrong here.
