Hairspray Movie Description:
Hairspray is a 2007 musical romantic comedy film based on the 2002 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was based on John Waters's 1988 comedy film of the same name. Produced by Ingenious Media and Zadan/Meron Productions, and adapted from both Waters's 1988 script and Thomas Meehan and Mark O'Donnell's book for the stage musical by screenwriter Leslie Dixon, the film was directed and choreographed by Adam Shankman and has an ensemble cast including John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, Allison Janney, and Nikki Blonsky in her feature film debut. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, the film follows the "pleasantly plump" teenager Tracy Turnblad (Blonsky) as she pursues stardom as a dancer on a local television dance show and rallies against racial segregation.
The film began development in 2004, and Dixon reworked Meehan and O'Donnell's first draft of the screenplay to tone down the musical's campiness. In 2005, Shankman agreed to direct the film. Composer/lyricist Marc Shaiman and lyricist Scott Wittman reworked their songs from the Broadway musical for the film's soundtrack, and also wrote four new songs for the film. Principal photography commenced in September 2006 with a budget of $75 million, and ended in December of that year; filming took place on locations in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and on sound-stages at Toronto's Showline Studios. Recording sessions for the film's songs and soundtrack took place in San Diego, California in the United States.
Hairspray premiered on July 10, 2007, at the Mann Village Theater and was released on July 20, 2007, in the United Kingdom and the United States. The film was critically and financially successful, breaking the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie musical, which the film held until July 2008 when it was surpassed by Mamma Mia! and later High School Musical 3: Senior Year in October. Hairspray went on to become the tenth highest-grossing musical film in US cinema history, behind the film adaptations of Grease, Chicago, and Mamma Mia!, and stands as one of the most critically and commercially successful musical films of the 2000s. Available in a variety of formats, Hairspray's Region 1 home video release took place on November 20, 2007. USA Network purchased the broadcast rights to Hairspray and was scheduled to debut the film on cable television in February 2010, but in the end it did not broadcast that month. Instead the film was pushed back and premiered on USA on July 24, 2010, with sister channel Bravo also showing it multiple times, and in February 2011 aired on ABC for over-the-air broadcasts.

One of my favorite things about this story is that Tracy's mom, Edna, isn't trying to squash her dreams, she's trying to protect Tracy from the nasty people she knows are out there. Once she realizes people aren't being mean to her daughter and are valuing her for who she is, she immediately jumps on board. As a mom myself, I understand that fierce protectiveness that might make a parent say "no" too quickly. To me, Edna strikes a good balance between protection, support, and willingness to grow.

Some fun facts about the movie! Nikki Blonsky, who played Tracy, was discovered when she was working in an ice cream shop, where she and the other employees would sing for tips. The role of Tracy's mom is traditionally played by a man, even in the Broadway performances. All of the actors in the movie did in fact perform their own songs! The cast went through several weeks of intensive "boot camp" where they practiced all of the musical numbers. They jokingly called "You Can't Stop The Beat" "You Can't Stop To Breathe" because of how fast paced it was. And to answer your question, my favorite songs are "Run and Tell That", "Without Love", and "You Can't Stop the Beat"!

And I always loved Zac Efron in this as well. My daughter's high school did a stage production of Hairspray. What was interesting was that her school is less than 2% white, so most of the "White" roles went to Asians while Black students took most of the Black roles. But note the "most." Particularly jarring: Penny's mom was played by a Black student. It was only a little bit confusing trying to keep track of who was supposed to be "white" and who was supposed to be "black" in the racially driven plot. But fun.

@chris...9497
@chris...9497 9 месяцев назад
The movie soundtrack album includes "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" and definitely echoes the overlooked and unstated attempt to impose generational conformity. All the kids were groomed to be their parents' mini-me, to take the parents' places in the social strata in future course. This is true in both the original and the later musical versions. You see it in Edna and Tracy, in Velma and Amber, even in Mrs Pingleton and Penny. Interestingly, it is more absent in the relationship of Wilbur and Tracy and even Motormouth Maybelle and her two kids Seaweed and Li'l Inez.

They wrote the High School Musical songs for a Tenor voice before they did casting but then casted Zac Efron who was a Baritone singer. Since he couldn't hit the notes well in the songs, he would just sing the intro and outro lines of the songs so that the songs blended well with his speaking voice but the rest of the songs in the first movie were sung by Drew Seeley. For the second and third High School Musical films, Zac said he had to put his foot down and fight for his voice to be on the tracks so they ended up writing the songs for his register so he could sing for the second and third movies. And yes, he also sang for Hairspray and The Greatest Showman. :)

One of the things i thought was brilliant about the film, is that the father, Wilbur, is the best character because he has no doubts, he has no issues with his life, he knows who he is, is comfortable with who he is, loves his wife and daughter and lives his life it’s why he doesn’t fall for Velma’s seduction tricks, and why he’s the voice of support and reason for the film. It’s really nice to see a character like that, especially when he’s played by Christopher Walken

fun fact: when the they were making the movie, the producers wanted to cut or change “I Know Where I’ve Been” because typically the main character (Tracy) sings the “3 o’clock number”, the directed had to fight to keep it in cause it’s so important to the story.

Zac Efron did this movie between the first High School Musical and the Second one to prove he could sing and fight for the ability to sing the songs for the second movie (and eventually the third). They had recorded Drew Seale for all of the songs involving Troy for the first one before officially casting and never wanted to re-record them maybe due to budge? But then they were going to stick with Drew's voice and so Zac did Hairspray to prove he was good enough on his own to do the last two movies with his own voice. Which obviously worked.

Great reaction mello. I love seeing you in this musical spirit. This movie takes me right back to highschool. Our school did like a rock horror type performance where the movie played behind us as we did the musical numbers. I was little Inez but I also helped choreograph some of the dances cause I loved this movie growing up.

Hairspray is always so much fun to watch, the music and dancing is so infectious its hard not to have a good time. If you are going to dive more into musicals on the channel i think it would be super fun to see you watch the Grease series that came out recently. It unfortunately got canceled after season 1, but it was really fun to watch and the music and choreo in it is SO good. I'm sad it got canceled, but I also think it makes it a good one to watch for reactions since it's not a long commitment. and its a prequel to the first Grease movie, if you planned to watch that on the channel as well.

You're right. The whole soundtrack is amazing. My favorite is the finale, "You Can't Stop the Beat." When this was a Broadway show, the nonstop energy of it earned it the nickname of "You Can't Stop to Breathe." Imagine doing that live at the end of a show with that many other song and dance performances.

@chris...9497
@chris...9497 9 месяцев назад
I understand the similarity, but here's the specifics: In "Hairspray", the girls are portraying a cultural occurrence, the black 3-girl group. It was an actual 'thing', with many examples. In "Little Shop of Horrors" the 3 girls functioned as a traditional Greek chorus. The Greek chorus was created in ancient Greece as a theatrical device. They consisted of about 3 to a couple dozen background actors who complemented the main action in the play, whose purpose was to explain what was going on and guide audience attention by way of movement, poetry, singing and/or playing musical instruments. Think of it as a type of 'social narration' or the voice of the playwright. Explains why the 3 girls' clothing matched the subject matter when they were singing about the film plot details, but when they're addressed as actual Skid Row residents, the glamour is absent; when they're being the Greek chorus, no one interacts with or notices them. Gotta say, I like how the 3 girls in "Little Shop..." are named Crystal, Chiffon, and Ronette; those were the names of prominent black girl groups of that time: the Crystals ("One Fine Day"), the Chiffons ("He's So Fine"), and the Ronettes ("Be My Baby").

I love musicals and I love this movie. It is one of my favorites!! I can't decide on a favorite song because I love them all and inspiring. My favorite scene is when Edna sings at the end and whips off her skirt and starts to shimmy with the fringe dress!! Since I saw this, I've wanted a fringe dress I could shimmy in!! In terms of Zac Efron, I believe this came out after High School Musical and I believe it was the first time he did sing in this because he didn't sing in High School Musical. Anyway great reaction, you have a new subscriber!!

The dance show is on par to the "American Bandstand" hosted by Dick Clark. "American Bandstand" was originally based in Philadelphia at the WFIL TV studio (an ABC affiliate). See, I loved this film for its portrayal of Black joy and talent in the 60s, as well as being honest about how blatant the racism was. I am disappointed how fatphobic it was, though. John Travolta in a fat suit (rather than a fat actor/actress), constantly pushing food on fat characters like they're always hungry/eating/can't control themselves, "without love, life is like my mother on a diet", "I can't stop eating", etc. Like, I love Tracy showing how awesome fat dancers and singers can be, but they also treated her and Edna poorly in some ways.
