Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Men In Black (1997). This sci-fi comedy film is exactly what we were looking for, a great time!
In "Men In Black," we follow Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) as they protect Earth from extraterrestrial threats while keeping their existence hidden from the public.
The main antagonist played by none other than Vincent D'Onofrio was one of our favorite performances. The amount of physical work he put into his Edgar the Bug made the villain memorable!
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the film's hilarious moments, groundbreaking special effects, and the dynamic chemistry between Smith and Jones.

so cool you guys are watching this. I honestly hope it leads you on a Will Smith rabbit hole cuz he was at the top of his game around this time. So some great ones would be Independence Day, which is a great Alien Sci Fi apocalypse feel good popcorn action flick. The first two Bad Boys movies are a must. kind of lethal weapon vibes buddy cop flick. And then of course you have to watch Enemy Of The State. One of his more serious roles which i wont say anything about other than its one of Jack Blacks first roles, if not his first role as a background character. Then if you haven't seen it, I Am Legend i think is a great movie. there's way more he's done but these would be my top picks, especially Independance Day and Enemy of The State

Vincent D'Onofrio is probably one of the most underrated actors of our time. From Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket to Jack Horne in The Magnificent Seven to the alien here. So many actors, even ones like Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, DiCaprio, etc, are them playing a role. D'Onofrio is hardly recognizable in his roles once he takes on the character. Chameleon actors are so rare.

"What makes J so special?" is explained through the recruiting scenes... which make more sense on the rewatch. First with the simple question of "why are we here"... he picked up on the fact that Z just gave them a bunch of buzzwords but didn't actually explain what they were doing, whereas the rest of them didn't question anything - so he's already showing that he's able to question and go against the status quo. Then with the paper test - he shows quick problem solving skills by dragging over the table - which makes a super loud annoying noise - showing he isn't worried about what others think as long as he gets the job done... and then by offering the table to the guy next to him, he shows he can be compassionate and work as part of a team. Then with the gun range, it's a bit more obvious, in that he doesn't easily discriminate by appearances and actually uses critical thinking. That's why they pick him - yes he has stamina and is fast, but more importantly he understands nuance and thinks for himself.

Tommy Lee Jones was initially frustrated because Barry Sonnenfeld told him to play his character completely straight while Will Smith had the comedic takes and Jones wanted to take on the comedy as well. When TLJ saw the finishing cut of the film, he told Sonnenfeld he finally understood the dynamic he was going for! The contrast in personalities between TLJ and Will Smith works so well!

I mean, the entire shooting test is self-explanatory if you think about it. who would the MiB want? guys that will immediately shoot anything that isn't human in a clear stress situation, or the calm guy that carefully assesses the situation before acting? So yea, makes sense for them to delete that scene, because it is kind of obvious.
@JackRabbitSlim
@JackRabbitSlim 4 дня назад
Yeah, but there's a reason a scene like that gets cut, it goes against the 'show, dont tell' philosophy. The audience has already been shown that Will's character thinks differently and they imply through his explanation and Zed's reaction that he was right about Tiffany, we didn't need to have it explained to us, it's better that little details like that remain open to the audience's interpretation.

The scene where K shoots out of the Bug, Will Smith absolutely hated being covered in the "bug guts" slime, but Tommy Lee didn't mind, so he had a private laugh by telling the crew to keep pouring more on them. Also, to help him struggle with his Edgar Suit, Vincent wore knee braces and taped his ankles. But the upper body physical acting he put out was still absolutely amazing. ESPECIALLY trying to look casual.

The comic this is based on is a lot darker too. Put it this way; J and K don't carry laser guns and neuralizers. They carry .38s and quick lime. EDIT: Also, J's assessment of "Little Tiffany" is true. In the animated show that came out not long after, the same bug-like species Edgar is tried to invade with their Queen, who used a disguise that *looks* like Little Tiffany.

The target practice scene and Jay's reasoning for shooting Lil' Tiffany is a parallel to the opening scene with Kay and Mikey. Kay's method of finding Mikey hiding amongst a group of immigrants is almost the exact same as Jay's attention to detail and reasoning for shooting Tiffany: Both aliens were using a disguise but didn't realize the context of their disguise made them stand out. Maybe not to regular, even well-trained people like the other military cadets Jay was with, but it did to Jay. They want his natural instincs, which is something that can't be trained. And showing the audience that Jay and Kay act differently but think the same is a great way to show (not tell) that they make a good team.

Omg you guys! This movie came out just before I turned 10, and it has always been one of my favorites! For that day, my dad arranged a whole MIB themed party and even got a friend of his to record a mission impossible style invite that had a "pass code" to get in and actual intercoms on our front door that night! An "alien" shooting course with nerf guns and laser tag! I'm still close to many of the friends that were there as well! Now that my dad has passed, it has remained a very special movie to me! Like the Star Wars and Back to the Future movies! So glad to join you guys for this one!

The existential suggestion at the end reminds me of the movie "Contact" with Jody Foster. (Which, if you haven't already reacted to, i would highly recommend.) where she says her dad always said "It we are the only life in the universe, ...it seems like an awful waste of space."

Edgar with "the Bug"running into the door, grunting in annoywnce and then opening it is one of the funniest understated moments. The scene with Frank the Pug being "shaken down"will never not be funny. The way that his eyes go all wide as he is shaken kills me, as well as Tommy Lee Jones corpsing and J's weak explanations for the dog being shaken or talking. I like the conventional effects used in the movie. Originally, the Bug was going to be a puppet(you can find images of the finished one online)but it got switched out, which is probably for the best. That final cockroach alien was pretty epic in CG. The novelization goes into a bit more. Beatrice guesses first that it isn't Edgar because it was "too nice". J. got every test right. The first was knowing the right questions(he asked why they were there and the military cadet didn't even know, so he just parroted what Z said.) The written test was problem solving, with the one table being used as the writing surface being the quickest and easiest method. And J was right about all the aliens, showing he didn't judge by appearances(scary alien vs innocent little girl. There was an MIB animated series(pretty good too, since it went pretty dark)which had some fun stuff. It ignored the movies ending and had L(doctor Weaver)as a character, while K was not neuralized. Had other members of the Bug hive come(with the Queen putting a bounty on L for killing "Edgar", her favorite)and it explains Jeebs can regenerate from his whole body being destroyed, as long as he has oxygen, he can regenerate. Frank the Pug is just a green dog with antenna underneath the fur suit, lol. The bouncing device makes me laugh every time. "A practical joke by the Great Attractor, he thought it was funny as hell." Vincent D'Onofrio trying to lean in the truck is one of my favourite moments. You should watch the other two for sure!

My favourite quote of the movie (with a nice little gibe to the US Forces): "Congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of gouverment training." Oh and for the coffee drinking aliens: In the MiB animated series, you get to know, that on their homeplanet, coffee is a delicacy and only for the King of their species is allowed to drink it.

Men in Black was based on a comic created at Aircel. Aricel later became Malibu Comics, and then sold off the movie rights. A few years later Marvel bought Malibu Comics to prevent DC Comics from doing the same and getting a one-up on the comic book sales market. When the movie began production, it was through Malibu. By the time it was released in theaters, Marvel owned Malibu outright. The original credit was for both Malibu and Marvel, but subsequent video releases changed it solely to show Marvel. In reality, Marvel only ever released 4 issues of Men in Black back in 1997 as a mix of reprints and movie tie-ins. Marvel pretty much abandoned all the Malibu properties around 25 years ago. The popular theory is that the original Malibu creator contracts awarded them royalties and residuals for use of the characters and Marvel did not want to compensate them. So, while they own the IP to several properties, they are likely never going to see the light of day again. This movie was written by Ed Solomon, who co-created and wrote the three Bill & Ted films and later wrote (or co-wrote) the two Now You See Me films.

The special effects in this film for a 1997 film still.hold up today. Will smith also scored a big hit with the men in black song, where he was in his hit making music mode and he was still doing fresh prince of bel air at this point as well. Bad boys was Will smiths breakthrough as a movie actor and I.think that's how he got the role in in independence day as well.
