This movie is Stephen Chow’s homage to Eastern and Western culture and cinema. The movie starred many actual master level martial artists. Even Stephen Chow has been considered a real martial art master in real life. The dying words of Donut (the staff martial artist) is the same dying words Sean Connery spoke in the movie Untouchable. The landlady’s hand gesture in the car scene is inspired by a scene from Bruce Lee’s movie. Then there’s the obvious Loony Tune effects.

When the Beast meets the Landlord and Landlady, they identified themselves (jokingly) as the legendary lovers Yang Guo and Xiaolongnu, a reference to the novel "Return of the Condor Heroes" by famous writer Jin Yong. That is a hilarious reference even Vietnamese audience can appreciate because Jin Yong's novels and their TV adaptations were very popular.
@rogerfaint499
@rogerfaint499 2 года назад
Fun fact: In 'Return of the Condor Hero', the one with Toad skill (aka Beast in KFH) was the adopted father of Yang Guo. Yang Guo and Xiaolongnu are the 'Fated lovers'. To bring more depth to the story, Return of the Condor Hero was the second part of the trilogy, the first part is 'Legend of the condor heroes' and Yang Guo's father was the bad guy. He wanted to be Beast's disciple but Beast would only have one and Yang Kang (Yang Guo's father) killed that son of Beast. When Beast realized the truth, he did not help Yang Kang to purge out his poison. Yang Kang tried to silence Huang Rong from revealing the truth and hit her on the back. But Huang Rong wore soft armor but the armor was already poisoned previously by others who was poisoned and had hit her from the back. Hence the poisoned was passed to Yang Kang. Beast was known as *West Venom* who specialized in poisons and also highly skilled (one of the 5 greats in martial arts in LOTCH).

As someone from Southeast Asia who grew up with Hong Kong cinema, I can tell you that Kung-Fu Hustle was a high-point for action comedies and made Stephen Chow the biggest movie star in Asia at the time. Here are some viewing suggestions if you would like to watch more HK movies but don't know where to start: Project A (1983)- A period kungfu movie with Jackie Chan playing a HK colonial marine fighting pirates. Has all the trademark Jackie Chan slapstick and some of his best stunts. Shaolin Soccer (2001)- Made 3 years before, it's the proto Kungfu Hustle. Has all the hallmarks of a Stephen Chow action comedy but rougher around the edges. Still really good though. Fist of Legend (1994)- My favourite Jet Li movie. IMO, Jet Li at his most badass and not to be missed. Hard Boiled (1992)- A John Woo film starring Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung. Although A Better Tomrrow is the more famous film, and The Killer more dramatically intriguing, for sheer gunplay brilliance, there is no topping Hard Boiled. Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung are magnetic in their roles and one of HK cinema's most unforgettable villans; Mad Dog.

The Actors who portrayed the Landlord and the Landlady are from the same Peking Opera School as Jackie Chan and many other well know Hong Kong action stars (in a way you can think of it like how classic SNL was known for having many of their alumni turn into genre defining comedy stars, but in this case is more weaving in choreography with storytelling rather than just straight comedy). The Landlord's actor also started his film career as Bruce Lee's stunt double.

About the action, the fights were mostly choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix, Kill Bill, Crouching Tiger, Ip Man 3 and 4). I say mostly because the original fight choreographer was Sammo Hung, who quit for a variety of reasons, including creative differences.

the part where the three masters fought the axe gangster foot soldiers was choreographed by sammo hung. the rest of the show was from yuen. so can you spot the differences between sammo's style and yuen's style? stephen and sammo had a fallout over the style they each want, which resulted in the termination of sammo hung by stephen. he was replaced by yuen, who's style met his demand.

There is a Roger Moore Bond film wherein two young Asian girls exercise their mastery of karate and save Bond in one scene. One of those two girls plays the Landlady in Kung Fu Hustle.
@SoloStudiosOfficial

The scene with the landlady intimidating the gang boss in the car is a reference to a scene from Bruce Lee's movie Way of the Dragon, where he wordlessly does the same threatening gestures.

It's nice to see you guys enjoy this !!! This film is an homage to the Kung Fu and Bruce Lee as well. Stephen Chow was inspired to venture into the film industry because of Bruce Lee and had always wanted to make a 'Kung Fu focused' film. As I grew up watching his movies (and so does many of us in Asia), this is the peak of his career for me and I am so happy to see his name at the end of the credits! Looking forward to your Shaolin Soccer review :)

This is a cinema masterpiece that has so many things in one, comedy, action, actual martial artists, great story line that link everything from start to end, redemption, hope, tension, humour amongst seriousness, music, sounds effects that you immediately recognize, symbolisms, paying homage to other western movies and cartoons. Directed, produced, written, acted by Stephen Chow. Absolute Legend. Only Stephen Chow can combined so many elements and make them work well together. Comedy itself is hard to achieve. its not pure slapstick, but creativity and style as well. the special effects must also work well. If this is your first chinese martial art movie, you can't set this as the bar for other movies style. perhaps only for comedy+martial art genre, which Stephen Chow specializes in. else you may be disappointed.

EPIC_FRODO a coolie is an old basically derogatory term for manual laborer, like the dude you saw with the bags of, what I assume is rice? People who basically get paid very little to do physically intense work. Also I think the asylum blood scene was a reference to the trope I guess that martial arts masters often sense the bloodlust coming from someone wanting to kill them, and since the beast is the #1 killer he would have a ton of killing intent/aura around him.

The landlady's actress trained with Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, learned her trade under the same master. This was her first movie appearance since 1985, and she didn't audition - she accompanied another actress to the auditions, and Chow saw her and spent *weeks* begging her to be in the movie. He knew he couldn't afford to let that chance slip.
