Stephen Chow is a legend of HK cinema. Unfortunately ~50% of his jokes are cantonese puns that are very hard to translate, so his early works aren't popular overseas. It's a good thing he made Kung-Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer with international audiences in mind.
@embran8486
@embran8486 3 года назад
@CiviliNation 7 So as a kid growing up in Africa you say you understand most of the puns that are even badly translated? Loving the movies is one thing, comprehending the jokes across all movies is something else. Admirable if true O_O
@nitrokid

I think it depends on what culture you were raised in, but to my knowledge, Stephen Chow's film does not rely heavily on Chinese culture references (I watched his films way too many times XD). Even when he does, it's pretty superficial so (hopefully) the audience can understand. I mean, some of his films are spoof/parody of some western movie, and was made with 'global audience mindset' in mind. I'm an Indonesian (that's SE Asia); I don't speak Chinese, and I have very little knowledge of Chinese culture, but I haven't got any difficulties understanding his humor or jokes so far. I mean, sure, we probably missed 1 or 2 inside jokes but no, it wasn't 50%. If the audience can't understand 50% of the movie it means the movie is a failure and Stephen Chow was failed as a director and actor :)

As an American I can say most of his movies have a fairly universal appeal. They depend a lot on physical humor, which is universally funny. His older stuff is considerably lower budget, which can be an obstacle to most Western audiences.
@monakasan7486
@monakasan7486 3 года назад
@@ididthisonpulpous6526 I am a HongKonger, his earlier works focus more on dialogue humor, I am just so glad that more and more RU-vidrs are reacting to Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. His earlier works were even funnier, such as From Beijing with Love, Fight Back To School. But I am not sure if westerners would like them, some of the jokes are really hard to translate, for example, there was a part where a mad scientist is notorious for making useless invention, he made a "Solar Torch", a torch that turns on automatically if there is light (This is direct translation) This part was so funny in Cantonese but might not have the same effect if it's in English.

The woman who played the landlady in this is Qiu Yuen, a veteran actress who trained in martial arts performance with Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. She learned alongside them and it shows. Hell, one of her last film appearances before this was in James Bond - and she didn't audition for this movie. She was accompanying a younger actress to the auditions and Steven Chow saw her and spent *weeks* begging her to be in his film. Before movie she hadn't acted since 1985, and had recently become a grandmother, and is still one of the best dang things about Hustle.

19:45 - wow this is the only subtitled version I've ever seen translate that section correctly, normally the joke is ignored in the official subtitles! The joke is that the dying Donut speaks his last breath and says "What are you prepared to do?!" In full english instead of cantonese, and then the landlord basically responds, "You are speaking english, why don't you speak chinese?" It's actually a recurring joke in the film with the Landlord character but the subtitles in every version I've ever watched seem to ignore it

I'm delighted that you guys finally got around to this one. Personally, I don't necessarily have to be in a mood, because this film puts me into "a mood". It's a very positive mood. I tend to like the subbed version a bit better, though the dubs are pretty good. The voices were well chosen - for a change. The dubbed one, in some cases, seems a little too "Americanized". In other words, some parts seem too abridged, because slang is occasionally inserted, which changes the meaning, sometimes. I really like the chase scene, which follows up the knife scene, and you can see the landlady approaching in the rear blade mirror. Like everyone else, I recommend "Shaolin Soccer". I also recommend "All for the Winner", for one of his earlier films. It's an experience of its own. When you are done with Stephen Chow, (I will never be) I recommend Jackie Chan. There is a huge wealth of those films. The problem with poll films, is that you often end up watching the good ones first, then the less good ones end up falling slightly short. Hopefully this won't happen with Shaolin Soccer. I recommend starting with "Drunken Master", in the version of your choice. It is one of Jackie Chan's earliest amusement movies. Some of his earlier stuff is a bit more serious classical Kung Fu stuff. I do recommend the early stuff too, but keep in mind it's a tad less refined than the later stuff. Keep going with Stephen Chow. One thing you'll probably notice is that he often goes by "Sing", in whatever he does. You might also like "The Magnificent Scoundrels". Chow likes to do parody stuff, but that one is its own concept.

I was hopin' you would watch the subbed version, and you did, which meant I had to go to your patreon to subscribe and watch the full lenght reaction, because I just love this movie to death, and watching others experience it for the first time, it kind of lets me experience it for the first time again, vicariously. Really like your reactions, You have become my fav reaction channel, alongside BrandonLikesMovies and JamesVsCinema, you're all great people.

Hard to believe this movie is nearly 20 years old but still holds up to this day in comedy and fighting.

The landlady is the “senior” of Sammo Hung,Jackie Chan & the landlord Yue Hwa is a underrated martial art actor...(also did some some somersault stunts for Bruce Lee). The landlady used to be a stuntwoman and also acted in one of Roger Moore’s James Bond movie.She retired but Stephen Chow the director(Buddha Palm ✋) tried many times to get her to act for this role.

Y’all popped up in my algo recently so I’m going through your reactions. I know this video was 2 years ago but this movie has great English dubs. If youre a native English speaker it’s the superior version imo.

This movie is Brilliant (My 3rd Favorite Movie of All-Time). But if you watch it a second time, there are all sorts of "Tells" and hidden reveals at the start of the movie. The Opening Credits has a Butterfly which symbolizes the main character's Metamorphosis. The first time you see the Coolie, he "Kicks" a bag of rice onto his shoulders. Donut's poles are featured prominently in his Congee Shop. The Tailor's Rings hang in his Dress Shop. The first reveal of the Landlord, he drinks "Fluid" revealing his fluid fighting style. The Landlady's first appearance, she's "Screaming", and last when the Beast is revealed, he's surrounded by Frogs... This movie is so brilliantly set up

So I know you guys have watched the first 2 naked gun movies, so why not finish it with "The Naked Gun 33 1/3" and then maybe check out the police squad series? They're too good to miss out on

Ok, fun facts: he's been around since the late 80's, and he's consistently doing this style of action-comedy. Whether you watch his new stuff - like Shaolin Soccer, or this Kung Fu Hustle - or his old stuff, you'll get tons of good laughs. Enjoy the journey!

The land lady, the landlord, Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, they had the same master. The tailor with rings on his arms is a kungfu master and acted in many older Hong Kong movies and has deciples around the world. Same with the bad guy, the toad man
