Police Academy Movie Description:
When the mayor of a crime-ridden city loosens the restrictions on entering the police academy in order to get more cops on the street, all manner of oddball characters enlist to join the force. Among the cadets are suave Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), hulking Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), beautiful Karen Thompson (Kim Cattrall) and sound effects-generating Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow), who all have to show initiative and courage when they are faced with tough situations out on patrol.
Police Academy is a 1984 American comedy film directed by Hugh Wilson in his directorial debut, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Its storyline follows a new recruitment policy for an unnamed city's police academy to take in any recruit who wishes to apply and study to become a police officer. The film stars Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, and G.W. Bailey.
The film was produced by The Ladd Company. It premiered on March 23, 1984. It grossed $8.5 million in its opening weekend and more than $149 million worldwide, against a budget of $4.5 million, and remains the most successful film of the series as of 2022. The film spawned six sequels in the Police Academy franchise.

Fun Fact, the tall guy who pushes down the wall in the training sequence was Bubba Smith, who did play in the NFL. He played for the Baltimore Colts in 1967, The Raiders in 1973, The Houston Oilers in 1975, and The Michigan State Spartans in 1964.

The podium scene is the highlight of the whole Police Academy series! Marion Ramsey (Hooks) said in later interviews that she was proud of this movie because it was one of the first times in movies that you saw a black man standing up for a black woman in the face of racism, when Hightower flips the car after Dopeland uses a racial epithet. The 80s was an odd transition time, when movies would use racism as a gag and show some progressive attitudes at the same time.

They acknowledged that racism exists and is actually widespread. And also clearly showed that it is not ok (only villains of the story are racists).

the first 2 Police Acadamy movies are the best. the second one introduced comedian Bob Goldthwait (aka Bobcat) who started appearing in additional movies through the 80's and early 90's. for my 30th birthday in 1994 my mom took my wife and I to see him live on stage at a local comedy club... the first 5 minutes into his act I thought I was going to have a heart attack I was laughing so hard!

I highly highly recommend sticking with the Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg) era, which is 1-4. Most of the main cast stayed through the entire series though. But there was a steep fall off after 4 that never quite recovered. 1 ,4, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7. The first film was the only one that was rated R. The second film which introduces several new characters recurring in later movies like Mauser, Zed, Sweechuck and Proctor. If you want to watch them. I'd suggest them in order and stopping at 4 (Citizens on Patrol).

So in answer to your question about shaving when going into the military, there's a couple answers. Some of who are that it creates a uniform look amongst recruits and sort of equalizing them. A shaved head requires less care. Also, a shaved head fits in a helmet and other protective gear easier. Another is it's a way to combat potential lice infestations.

Seen Michael Winslow on his tour once, and he was truly phenomenal (favorite being him dubbing sound effects from Star Wars). Also George Gaynes who played Lassard was born here in Finland in 1917, just before we got our independence from Russia. I'd also have to say I do have a soft spot for Lt. Harris; he's just so fun antagonist, and constantly great from movie to movie.

They get to being like how you imagined them to be, Mello, full of more practical jokes & chaos, as they go along, at least they do in 2, 3 & 4. After that, they drop off. But the first 4 are definitely the best of the series. I personally felt like they were still finding their footing in the first one. But once Proctor & Zed & Sweetchuck & some of the other characters join the current cast starting with the very next sequel & are no longer rookies anymore (Lt. Harris will leave & be replaced by this guy named Mauser, but Harris will then return for the remainder of the series, btw), then I think you would really start to enjoy them a little more. I myself grew up having seen the 3rd & 4th films more than the others, so the 4th film in which they train local citizens is one of my personal favorites. Give it a couple more films & I think you will see why people love this franchise even more..

It has been a requirement for so long that it is both a rite of passage and a tradition. Short hair has become the norm for almost all services for ease of uniformity, convenience, and safety. While regulations slowly adapt and stay, the induction haircut has become a timeless part of many military traditions.

6:24 skin color plus he figures they’ll do whatever he wants them to do no questions asked. 7:12 because he wants them to fail out or quit. 10:51 that was the style back then. Over the years guys shorts got longer and girls got skimpier. 19:53 that’s where he was prior to joining the academy. 20:16 that’s how a lot of stuff happens. The cadet changed clothes so they wouldn’t see him as a cop. 21:24 love how Lassard had to think for a moment before saying whether to fire. 22:47 it’s funny how Tackleberry acts after the riot. He really wanted to shoot a gun. I’m betting he failed joining the military.

Whenever I'm asked what my favorite movie is, my immediate reply is "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol." Everyone knows I'm a film aficionado & even took a couple of years in film school. I can quote lines from some of the most obscure movies & have encyclopedic recall of release years & cast/crew. I grew up with a hearty intake of Steven Spielberg & and George Lucas' films. My admiration for filmmaking goes from Coppola to Tarantino & everyone in between. I have an unquestionable love of sci-fi, fantasy, & adventure epics. That being said, my answer of PA:4 is my favorite movie is usually taken as a joke. But the funny thing is, I think it might really be so. I had that thing on VHS & wore out the tape.

As for shaving heads in the military...On one hand it's just practical, keeps it out of the way, and one less thing to worry about in the morning. On the other, to be blunt, is to remove any individuality....the military has no intrest in you "expressing" yourself or thinking your cooler/stylish/besster looking than anyone else...once your all "equal" they can start making soldiers

You’re right. This is uneven pacing. The first one feels like it’s not sure what kinda movie it wants to be. Raunchy comedy, or underdog ensemble film that is also kinda funny, but is more heart warming. 2 and 3 are way the best of the series. Also 4 has its moments and 5 is cool too. I’d say 2-5 are worth checking out. After that, no way.

How I rank the Police Academies, from LEAST to BEST: Part 7 - Made too late, the ship had sailed, everyone wants to move on, Jones is the only character who looks alive. Part 6 - Movie has nothing to do with the academy, series is past its prime, but the ensemble still is solid and it's good to see Fackler back. Part 3 - Not bad, just too much rehashed humor from the original. Part 2 - Very good for a sequel, just not one of my favorites. Part 1 - Great introduction, nuff said. Part 5 - Least "offensive" up to this point, unique setting, carefree fun, remaining cast easily fills the void left by Mahoney's departure. Part 4 - All the best characters are there, skateboarding, welcome back Harris, featuring Billie, Spade, & Stone, funky title song, thin plot but a guilty pleasure, deserves its deleted scenes edited back in.
