Fun fact: Mr. T’s mom actually got mad at him for the scene where he was harassing Adrian. She attended the premiere of the movie, and when it got to that scene, she said “I did not raise you to talk to a lady like that.” Mr. T tried to explain it was just his character, but she wasn’t having it and she stormed out of the theater. Mr. T is actually a wonderful person who has done a lot of good for the world irl.
In his mom’s defense, he really was playing a character too near "himself". It probably was psychologically challenging when she’s probably still coming to terms with his fame in the Mr. T persona, an alter-ego that follows her son everywhere. Merely giving him a new name in this movie wasn't separate enough in her heart. On top of that, Hulk Hogan was practically the same thing in the movie, someone importing 99% of their own identity with merely a new name, but he ended up honorable and friendly with Rocky. I can understand his mom struggling with what she was seeing. Some people just can't wrap their head around acting and they fall into a movie/story too completely.
Adrian's character arc in these 3 movies is astounding...she went from a mousy, insecure, unambitious person to one who enables a broken man to find his footing again....when i first saw that scene on the beach, i was blown away...
I mean I think you could say Adrian was mousy but I don’t think she was insecure or unambiguous, she was just a very shy and soft-spoken person. I think being around Rocky gave her a newfound confidence and determination seeing him rise above every obstacle and become what he did. Everyone needs an Adrian in their life who loves and supports their partner the way she did with Rocky
He once said crying is the easiest thing he ever did as an actor! I would have to place this episode as the best of the series, in my opinion. 1 and 2 were amazing, but this one had more emotion and satisfaction.
@@BobBenson-qz8lp Crying in general is the most difficult thing for an actor to do, but Sly was able to do it in specific scenes. The training montage in Rocky III is really good.
You actually held up relatively well when Mickey died. When I saw this years ago in the theater, which was packed, we were all crying; but there was this one girl who was wailing out the wazoo...sobbing buckets. Just made us all cry even more. Just a tribute to Burgess Meredith's skill in delivering the character of Mickey to all of our hearts.
Clubber Lange was made this movie's villain yet he is so relatable and relevant. I mean, how many of us have had to work tooth and nail for what little and do or get it alone only for others to have it handed to them? Lange did so by himself.
One of the greatest turnaround lines I've ever heard: "Give everybody a present and drop this chump." I am jazzed every time I hear it. Apollo was a class act.
Rocky would have NEVER been able to beat Clubber Lang without Apollo changing his style into the new defensive first aggression. Styles make fights and even the first two rockys would have been slaughtered fighting that way vs Lang.
The legend is that Mr. T's mother was so appalled by the behavior of his character Clubber Lang that he had to swear to her that he would never play a villain role ever again.
I'm a Trekkie, but I've been taking the time to watch all your other reaction videos as well. You really blew me away with your Rocky 2 reaction, and now you've done it again, this time with Rocky 3. Once again, you had a lot of very thoughtful things to say at the end. What I found most profound though was said by you much earlier, starting just after timestamp 5:14 .... "They ARE both very lucky that they found each other, and that they can love each other so completely ---and be there for each other. Not everybody can find that. It takes a long time." Seemingly simple truths, and yet so profound. All of it, all, from the first word to the very last. Very important and very moving and meaningful. Thank you. It's a better world when more people are able to not just talk out, but actually LIVE out what you've said there.
Mick's mannerisms, the way he spoke, the way he treated Rocky was exactly how my father was to me. My dad was an old WWII Navy guy. He passed in 2016. The scene in the locker room tears me up without fail every time because it makes me think of my dad.
I was 10 years old when this came out. We kept sneaking back into the theater to watch it. The crowd in the theater was going crazy during the final fight as if we were actually there. When Rocky told Clubber “go for it” everyone went nuts. Mr. T was a great villain.
These Rocky movies really are so iconic. This movie with Mr.T. and the Eye of the Tiger song became cultural staples of the 1980s. Everyone still knows the song but sadly a lot fewer people recognize Mr.T these days.

For the people who don't know, Mr.T was such an enormously recognizable pop culture figure in the 80s that he had his own Saturday morning cartoon series and breakfast cereal. I also have to mention that there were numerous Mr.T toys, games, comic books, t-shirts, posters, and even air fresheners that bore his name and likeness. I was fortunate to meet and hang out with Mr.T in the early 90s at a few comic book conventions, and he was a good dude with a great sense of humor.
It was a great thing seeing Apollo & Rocky become friends. Mr. T. gained fame during the A-Team tv series. "I pity da fool" became one of his buzz phrases in the show. In real life he's reputedly a teddy bear. Rocky's strategy was to wear him out. It's not obvious, but early on it was stated he won all his victories quickly. He never learned endurance. Go back and watch the 2nd fight again. A lot of the time Rocky was holding his arms up, so Clubber's punches were blocked by his forearms. Rocky then waited until Clubber got tired. Fun Fact: Burt Young (Paulie) was an accomplished boxer when he was in the Marines. RIP Carl Weathers.
I love Burgess Meredith who played Mickey, he has starred in a fair few things such the penguin in the batman tv series, appeared in the Twilight Zone TV series three or four times. I loved his role in the film, Grumpy Old Men
So glad you brought up Burgess in the Twilight Zone. Two episodes where he gives tour de force performances are Time Enough At Last and The Obsolete Man.
It used to be so common that it was a cliche ----- 2 guys becoming friends after a fist fight. I saw it. I experienced it. But I can't explain it. Like teams shaking hands after a game, competition builds respect on some primal level.
I always thought this rocky movie was a little rushed, and predictable, but it's still a very good one, and I enjoy it. The stand out moment is Adriennes pep talk, more than mickys death, it is so emotional. It is amazing how powerful the support of someone who loves you can be.
The painting at the end was done by an artist named Leroy Neimann who was very famous in the 70s for painting sporting events. He is in the movie as the ring announcer for the Thunder Lips fight. Also, "I pity the fool" would become Mr T's tag line and he would have to repeat it on every talk show he appeared on.
Mick, Rocky &, Apollo are fighters, fighters have to go out fighting. Fighters fight other fighters, pain, sickness and, at the end old age. This is why Mick was smiling and happy at the end his final fight was to stay alive long enough to help Rock win. That's why his final words, we did it, I love you kid, I love you.

Burgess Meredith’s (“Mickey”) acting career was like a “Rocky” comeback. He, like many writers, directors, and other actors in Hollywood, was blacklisted in the early ‘50s, and until the mid-‘70s, he mostly did TV---great stuff like the Penguin on “Batman” and the “Twilight Zone,” then suddenly he did “The Day of the Locust” (a great, prescient movie about Hollywood fame) and “Rocky” back-to-back and was nominated for an Oscar two years in a row, then got more steady movie work after that. My sentimental favorite is Ammon in “Clash of the Titans” (1981), in which he played a poet and playwright. When Meredith was blacklisted, he wrote for the stage and screenplays and directed.
Your reaction was so touching. The painting at the very end of the film, of Apollo and Rocky going in for the punch at time time, is hanging in Stallones home. When Carl Weathers died a few weeks ago, Stallone paid his tribute to Carl, standing in front of that painting!
I think this is the only one of the Rocky movies that I have seen from start to finish, I think I caught it on TV when I was teenager. I really enjoy the movie, and I love the interaction between Apollo and Rocky. Stallone's words in mourning of Carl Weathers definitely brought a tear to my eyes.
Mr. T's story is both inspiring and improbable. An army veteran, he became known on a reality show before reality shows were a thing. Mr. T was a bouncer who appeared on a 'Tough Guy' show aired on cable TV. With absolutely zero acting training, his natural charisma and camera presence translated to a long career in TV and film.

I am assuming that when Mr T got the role of Clubber Lang and Hulk Hogan as Thunderlips, I keep hearing Mel Gibson in Braveheart: “Just be yourselves.” I remember my younger brother reacting to Hulk Hogan. He was scared and said: “I didn’t know they made them that BIG!” Bunny, I cried like you when Micky died. I still do every time. Burgess Meredith and now Carl Weathers, I miss them both. RIP. One of your best reactions, Bunny. Rocky III deserved that.
The sad part is now Hogan has list like half a foot at least because of all the back surgeries he's had due to the finishing move that help make him tons of money.
As others have said the wrestler is Hulk Hogan. This movie helped make him a household name. He and Mr. T teamed up a few years later in the first WrestleMania which is the wrestling equivalent of the Superbowl. It all came full circle in 2005 when Sylvester Stallone inducted Hulk Hogan into the WWE Hall of Fame!

Your reaction to the opening "bout" with Thunderlips is hilarious, as you're reeling from the absurdity of it all. I like seeing it dawn on you that Rocky III is when they gave up all pretense of naturalism and serious/believable drama in the series, replacing it with absurd and cartoonish situations and characters -- and it works! Sequels don't have to duplicate that which came before them to succeed. This film is just good, dumb fun -- save for that "Eye of the Tiger" song, which was SO overplayed on the radio that everyone got sick of it.
Former heavyweight boxer, Earnie Shavers, did audition for Clubber Lang. And he had crazy punching power, he hit Stallone so hard, he was puking for minutes. But I'm glad Mr. T got the job.
I was living in Germany for a bit and we'd go on these marches; there was a name for them, but I can't remember it. Well for one of those marches, the guy that played Thunder Lips(Hulk Hogan) had come by to sign autographs and stuff. So I actually got to meet him. And at 8 years old seeing your dad looking straight up to meet another man's eyes, and for a man's hand to engulf your hand and wrist to shake, it was surreal. Lol

I love your reactions to these awesome Rocky movies. I think that you will love seeing the character of Rocky grow and evolve as the series goes forward. Of course you will like some of the movies better than others but you will love all of them because you will be so invested in the character of Rocky. I can't wait to see your reaction to Rocky 4. And finally I want to say R.I.P. Carl Weathers. He was an inspiration to me and along with Stallone they motivated me to start working out all those years ago. This was the film that launched Mr. T and Hulk Hogan to stardom. After Rocky III, Mr. T would be known for his role on The A-Team; playing B.A. Baracus. Hulk Hogan had been wrestling for a number of years before appearing here as Thunderlips. A year and a half later; in January of 1984, Hulk Hogan defeated The Iron Sheik to win the WWF World Heavyweight Championship…giving birth to what would be known as “Hulkamania”. Ironically, in 1985, Hogan and Mr. T would work together again…as a tag team….and competed in the very first WrestleMania in March of 1985.
Hulkamania was born before WM. In fact, Hogan git mega popular after this film and went to a different organization. That's why Vince Jr begged him to return becayse he knew it was legit money, and the other company was treating Hogan like shit. But, yup this was the launching pad.. Previously, Hogan was mostly used as a 'monster heel'.
Boxer vs Wrestler exhibition matches used to be fairly-regular occurrences to boost the bottom lines of both sports. Even Mohammed Ali had an exhibition match against top Japanese pro wrestler Antonio Inokii. You never hear about them anymore, probably because Boxing doesn't want to be associated with the now-admittedly theatrical 'sports entertainment' of pro wrestling.
As many times as I’ve seen this I never thought about it, but Adrian’s speech makes me wonder if Paulie went through a similar thing. He definitely has some of those traits Adrian wants to keep Rocky from: bitterness, anger, feeling people owe him…a ticking time bomb. Something about her delivery seemed like she spoke from experience
RIP Carl. Well done, Bun. We didn't know that "I Pitty the fool" would become what it did. Mr T went from a real-life bouncer to a star, and this movie was the bridge. Mick is gone, Apollo picks up the gauntlet, Adrian presses the right buttons, and Paulie. Will we get a decision on the special favor? Only time will tell.
Great movie. Did you know that that song "You're the Best" from the Karate Kid was suppose to be the theme for this movie but they went with the song Eye of Tiger. I heard Mr T mother who saw the movie didn't like how Mr T talked to Adrian in the movie and walked out of the cinema. I like the scene where Adrian talk to Rocky on the beach and help him face his fear. the next movie the best in the series in my opinion and the most successful of the franchise. Also fyi I think Mr T was Stallone Body Guard in real life. Fyi the blonde wrestler is Hulk Hogan a very famous wrestler. Also fyi the is real and was put in Philadelphia Museum of Art.
As a young man I was a boxer and one of my coaches would play the music from the second movie. I think it was called “going the distance” from Rocky’s second fight with creed. Great stuff.
He left after Burt Young and Carl Weathers who we loved so much as kids in the Rocky movies and not only... The older we get, the more a piece is uprooted of youth and not just age... R.I.P Master

This was the only Rocky movie I saw in the theater. Rocky 1 and 2 were great 70's movies. This movie has that early 80's feel to it. However, Rocky 3 was also well received when it was released and I thought it was really good when I saw it. Man! this really reminds me just how great Carl Weathers was as Apollo Creed. RIP Mr. Weathers. You were one of the greats. Great reaction Bunnytails!!
Burgess Meredith was brilliant as Mick. Anytime anyone is lacking motivation to work out just imagine Mick screaming in your ear! Apollo was the perfect trainer to step in after Mick. From first hand experience he knew all of Rocky's weaknesses and how to work on them. Clubber was too powerful for Rocky's old tactics and Apollo was right...he needed to be trained "different."
Bunny, I really enjoy your reviews. I hope you post the Part 4 review soon. For many people in my generation, it's their favorite one of the series. Not because it is the best (not by a long shot), but because Part 4 was the first rocky movie they saw.
I really loved your genuine & wholesome reaction through out the emotional ups and downs. Adrian delivers her "Golden Beach Speech" which is one of the highlight scenes of the film - with great acting from both Talia Shire & Sylvester Stallone. "I Pity The Fool !!" - Mr. T gives us his debut performance as Clubber Lang, a rage driven antagonist that is the complete opposite of real life Mr. T (who is a class act). The simplicity of his character fits perfectly for this film. Clubber Lang's straight forward behavior strengthens all the other characters and their nuances. He knew just how to push all their buttons and get them riled up. Not sure if you knew that Stallone hired the band Survivor to write "Eye of the Tiger", the theme song for Rocky 3. They derived the lyrics, including the title, from the dialogue in the film. They created a musical riff with chord changes to match the punches in the film's boxing scenes.
Fun fact, when they showed MR. T's name in the opening credits, the commercial playing in the background was an actual car ad at the time with the opening phrase "The word is 'awesome'", foreshadowing how awesome Mr. T is in this movie.
You know, this movie gets some grief but I've always really liked it. A great character study of Rocky winning back is self respect, dealing with that doubt and inner demons. And yes, Weathers is wonderful as his "frenemy" who really becomes a friend here. And a wonderful turn by Mr. T as the nasty Clubber Lang, the foe you really want to see put down hard. I didn't see any of the rest of the series, but this one was a real crowd pleaser. Can't imagine any film today being able to get the audience off its feet like this one.
Read the lyrics in that song. It describes the entire position of this movie. Rocky has become like Apollo. Don’t lose your grip … you must fight to keep your passion alive.

How this movie ends on a freeze frame, reminds me of how in Avatar The Last Airbender had done for Azula vs Suki in Appa's Lost Days episode in Book 2.
That Rocky statue is still there. It stood at the top of the steps in front of the Art Museum for years. Then it was moved to the Sports complex for a while. Then it was moved again to a spot to the right side of the Art Museum where it stands to this day. The argument was that it represented Art (Film) and not sports.
