First Time Watching SHIN GODZILLA 2016 | Movie Reaction シン・ゴジラ 

What comes out of Godzilla’s mouth isn’t lightning. It’s called his Atomic Breath. It’s basically a stream of pure nuclear energy/radiation that he’s focusing into a giant heat ray/laser beam. This has been a signature power of his since he debuted in 1954, although typically it is cobalt blue in color, not purple.

As a curious fact, Shin Godzilla is in constant pain because his mutation causes tears both internally and in his skin, in fact the song titled "Who Will Know" that plays at the minute 19:30 focuses on Godzilla's point of view and how this He is, like us, a victim of his existence. a life he didn't ask for.

From my understanding, the people coming out from the tail is Godzilla’s next evolution. It was on the wiki and if I’m remembering correctly, Godzilla evolves to deal with what can harm it.

Also at 9:00 the song and the roar was from the original 1954 godzilla. And when hes using his atomic breath (i cant remember the name of the store but its in the ginza district) he destroyed it in this movie and in 1954. The filmmakers asked the store if they could film it being destroyed and the store said “we would be honored for godzilla to destroy our store again”

Godzilla’s tail was like that because it was starting to evolve into its next form when it got frozen. This Godzilla evolves to counter whatever danger it comes across, and since humans individually tried to bring it down, it was evolving to be able to create mini Godzillas that would have been specifically to counter humanity as a whole. Japan just narrowly avoided Godzilla’s mass extinction of all of mankind, and that tail is a grim reminder of that fact.

Also at 27:50 they woke it up and used drones because the only way to get him down was to tire him out, so by using the atomic breath and his back he was using all of his energy and getting exhausted. Pretty solid plan imo!

They mentioned earlier in the film that Godzilla was leaving behind pieces of himself and that he could replicate and those could possibly form into their own life forms. Which entails the final shot with the tail, it started the replicating process itself

They re-released a dubbed version in America in 1957 that added scenes with Americans and cut Japanese scenes. In the majority of Japan films (Toho) Godzilla is a good guy. The song "Decisive Battle", composed for Director Anno's "Neon Genesis Evangelion" was actually later adopted by the modern JSDF as an Anthem. You'll hear it if you spend any time around the Japanese military. Funnily enough, it was an homage to actually military marching music from WW2.

Okay, ignore every other comment explaining things bc I have just read through several dudes mansplaining things you “didn’t get” and even worse, they mansplained with wrong information💀 I will answer the questions here and what a lot of people don’t grasp as much about how terrifying this iteration of Godzilla is. Firstly, the blood leaking out of him is due to the fact that his body was actively evolving in real time to compensate for the crushing effect that gravity would have on a creature that size. The blood was literally from internal hemorrhaging, this creature is in constant agony and suffering and scared confusion in every frame we see him in. Every roar of his, according to the director, is in pain. His back glowing and him shooting fire was not an act of aggression outright, it was him expelling the “waste” or “exhaust” built up from his previous evolution. He evolved the ability to concentrate it into a beam as a defense mechanism. He is actively achieving physiological adaptations that should only be possible over generations. He can actively adapt and evolve to directly counter, like the beams shooting out of his back to cover as much square footage as possible to defend against the bombs. Lastly, I believe Goro Maki killed himself and jumped overboard from the Glory-Maru where Gojira rested on the sea floor beneath him. I believe they merged together, and that is how Gojira evolved to disperse in smaller, giant humanoids, as he had a human form to create an adaptive baseline for the next evolution until he can begin to move again. Horrifying stuff

the best way to describe shin Godzilla is what happens when you radiate a teratoma and let it continuously evolve into hellish eldritch horror. The scariest part is that its becoming more self aware as it changes.

I'm not sure how into anime you are, but the director of this movie is probably most famous for Neon Genesis Evangelion. I definitely recommend watching it if you haven't. He even uses one of the main theme songs in the credits for this one. 11:30 That's one of the key critiques the movie was making. Japan is so swamped by bureaucracy that their government response time is both atrocious and often inadequate to rapidly evolving situations, like the Fukushima disaster only a couple years before. Also, I'm glad you mentioned the googly eyes. The first time I saw them, I didn't like his design. But then I realized, they're fish eyes. He was literally evolved for aquatic life at that point and had fish eyes. Finally, in his fully land- evolved form, not only did he lose the googly eyes, he had protective eyelids that slid into place to protect his eyes from harm. This Godzilla achieved something that he really hasn't done since 1954: He was a horrifying, nigh unstoppable force of nature.

I highly recommend reacting to the original 1954 Godzilla film that film is fantastic that movie in a way reimagined cinema like no other kaiju movie had ever manage to create such an iconic legacy and considering they did all this long before the internet or any sort of good editing tech

I saw this in 2017 when it had a limited release in theaters in the US... I STILL say the creepiest thing about Godzilla in this movie is HE HAS NO TONGUE!!!!

The only incarnation of Godzilla that was female was the disasterous 1998 American version of Godzilla, also called GINO by fans. This film delivers a deliberate jab at the 98 film, with the French helping Japan halt the countdown. In the horrible 98 film, France is blamed for the nuclear testing that creates GINO. In this film, France helps stop the countdown and buys Japan the time it needs to stop Godzilla. This film is fairly unique in the Godzilla franchise while also staying extremely true to its roots. You kept remarking how they needed to evacuate people from Godzilla's path and the levels of ineptitude by the government, this film is an allegory for the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan and caused the Fukushima reactor meltdown. The entire response effort was handicapped by government ineptitude and lack of preparedness, and the reactor meltdown made worse by the fact that the company that owned it was slow to admit it had made some serious mistakes in its design of the nuclear plant. Another grim aspect of this film is that traditionally Godzilla's heat ray is blue in color. The director made it violet in this film because in Japanese culture violet is the color associated with Death.

The movie is so deeply. Just Hideaki Anno could make a Godzilla like that. When Gojira appears for the first time, you can hear the soundtrack "Persecution of the masses" is a representation of the POV of the people what the feel with Gojira, but the most important thing is, when Gojira does the Atomic Breath, you can hear the soundtrack "Who Will Know" that song is from the Gojira's POV, you can understand what it feels, you can understand its pain and suffer. It isn't bad or good, it's just a victim. Both soundtracks were made by Shiro Sagisu, he's a great composer and Anno's friends, who worked in Neon Genesis Evangelion saga. In fact as a fan, you may able to detect some references from Evangelion in Shin-Gojira Something else, in 2017, in Japan there was a concert named as "Evangelion x Gojira Symphony" where the orchestra played the most important songs from Evangelion and Gojira, which ones I mentioned before

Im so glad this was recommended to me on youtube. Cant believe i let myself go so long without rewatching this absolutely BANGER of a Godzilla film. 100% my favorite modern take on Godzilla. The american godzillas are so fuckin lame compared to this lmaoooo, the scene when it lets out its atomic breathe with the dark background is fucking beautiful. Huge Godzilla fan, this one had some cool moments but this movie as a whole I never really cared for too much, also the atomic breath while cool is a bit much the splitting bottom jaw and the beams that come out of his spines and tail

Not sure if you've seen this one already, but here's another DARKER Alternate-Universe Version of Godzilla you might like to scope out.... "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" (2001). - Oh! And yes... that was Blood pouring down on top of those cars in that earlier tunnel scene. And the critters on the tip of Godzilla's tale at the end of the movie... weren't people.... they were offspring. Shame they never made a sequel... but that would've been a HORROR movie instead. YIKES!!!

Fun fact: Shin godzilla and godzill minus zero are the only two movies about the big lizard to be made by their company since the 90s. I believe its due to quality control after america ruined their first adaptation of godzilla.

This is the longest cinematic universe and can also be seen as a small multiverse as there are different continuities in every era of the Kaiju-Eiga universe. This year is actually the 70th Anniversary of the original movie, and I highly recommend every Godzilla and non-Godzilla movie in this universe. My understanding is that Godzilla is usually referred to as “he” in English and “it” in Japanese. I think the perception of Godzilla as female might come from the 1998 Godzilla, or “Zilla”, which reproduces asexually and lays hundreds of eggs in the film, but even Zilla is referred to as a male in the film (although in all honesty, a creature that reproduces asexually biologically shouldn’t be considered male or female; it just is).

Shin Godzilla was Hideki Anno's attempt at metaphorically explaining the evolving nature of disasters, ala the 2011 Taihoku Earthquake and later Nuclear Facility failure, the slow, imprecise nature of governments and the reliability of so-called "Experts". Think COVID-19 of our most recent era. Minus One deals with war trauma, survivor's guilt, PTSD, family building, and national re-unification. As a disabled American Veteran of the ever-mutating GWoT, I think Shin and Minus One are equally terrifying and meaningful. However, Minus One actually had me tearing up a bit in theatres, which was something that I did not expect....Noriko's lines, especially.

I think this was one of my least favorite Godzilla movies I felt there was too much dialogue and not enough action, I recently saw Godzilla Minus One now that one tops this One big time great story and special effects.

Overrated neoconservative Nippon Kaigi-oriented movie. Not without some good moments but completely undeserving of the breathless, unreflective praise.
