The date of March 11 in her diary and the location they travel to after leaving Tokyo is a direct reference to the day of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami which killed almost 20,000 people, injured thousands, and left others with no home. It also caused the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster. Makoto Shinkai wanted to remind people so that we don't forget about it.

I was a Marine stationed at MCAS Iwakuni in Yamaguchi prefecture when that happened. Got tasked out for Operation Tomodachi (Operation Friends), about 25,000 Marines and sailors getting food, water, blankets and fuel to various relief centers. It was freezing cold, and we were all very worried about the radioactive material release from Fukushima NPP. So. Much. Devesation. We were helping with relief and clean-up efforts for more than 3 months.

All the stages are locations where large earthquakes have occurred in the past. 1. Miyazaki 2016 2. Ehime 2001 3. kobe 1995 4. Tokyo 1923 5. Fukushima 2011

31:57 Sadaijin needed Suzume to fix everything, but Tamaki was in the way, wanting to go back home, so he possessed her and made her said that, to let Suzume go, and finish her mission. That´s why she said ¨get out of my house¨. Although that part is a little confusing, I LOVE this movie! Great reaction!!

I just watched it tonight and i love it, its so hard not to get teary eyed with this movie. I put this on the same level as spirited away, another movie that touched my heart when i was a child

I was visiting family in USA during the 3/11 earthquake and came back a few months after… all the aftershocks and just how much trauma the country went through. When I watched this movie the first time (I watched it in Korea studying abroad so I was the only one crying 😅) I bawled my eyes out cause it’s something we all have experienced being in Japan at that time. Absolutely beautiful movie.

What I love about Makoto Shinkai work is he's using simple techniques to show very complex, ethereal emotions like longing, broken love or in this case the process of getting to terms with a loss at a young age. I love this movie because it touches my heart like no other, as if it was made just for people like me who lost someone as a child.

Great reaction as always. Suzume is another stunning film by Makoto Shinkai, and I was lucky enough to see it at the cinema - believe me, the quality of the animation and the sound and music work even better on the big screen! This film is rich with symbolism related to the Tohoku earthquake, and whilst all the empty and abandoned places are sad, the animation gives them a certain beauty.

I saw it in theatres and I was pretty much in awe the entire time. It was really good and tickled that Ghibli nostalgia.

Riding a bike uphill is definitely hard. Reminded me of doing the uphill sections of the Shimanami Kaido cycling route during my vacation when I traveled from Tokyo to Sakurajima. Was a nostalgia trip seeing Suzume sort of trace my route backwards. Not a surprise since Makoto Shinkai is masterful at evoking a sense of nostalgia - he captures both rural and city landscapes with such soul.

My favorite part has to be her jumping onto the worm in Tokyo, and everyone else just seeing some girl jump off a bridge and then fly up in to the sky.

14:51 A high school girl? And in a super remote location where the buses barely even run? In the rain? Absolutely I would pick her up. (Though I’d also give a ride to a hitchhiking unhoused person so my opinion probably doesn’t count for much lolll)
