Bulger became an informant on purpose to use the F.B.I. to take down a rival gang and he corrupted them to be used for years after. He had disappeared and was presumed dead when this movie came out. He was later found hiding in California and sent to prison. The movie about him played by Johhny Depp was called "Black Mass".

I actually saw this film in cinema and the reaction of everyone in the audience was epic lol. Ppl screamed, gasped, started crying and there was even 1 bloke who started laughing his head off lol. I think I even went to see it twice just so I could see 1st time watchers reactions to Leo get shot lol. Defo 1 of my fave films, this, snatch, shawshank redemption, green mile, Schindlers list and rise of the footsoilder are my fave films x

When I saw him in What’s eating Gilbert grape, I really thought he was a handicapped actor.

Tbf, that rat running across the screen got raked over the coals when this movie came out. Everyone thought the exact same thing, like bit on the nose, innit, Martin?

Go look at the discourse from that time. Go look at the archived IMDb boards lol. Go look at the reviews from then. It don’t ruin the movie or anything but it was just more of an eye roll moment for people.

I so agree with you. I got panic attacks watching this movie. We care so much for the antagonistic characters as much as the protagonist... it's just THE perfect movie.

I like the original movie better due to a better ending. The bad guy gets away with it. But I guess the US audiences couldn't handle it, so they created Mark's character to close the loop.

Love both movies, despite Hollywood's obsession with poor attempts at "Boston accents." I recommend The Departed for its script, acting chops, and wide range of emotions (tension, shock, confusion, light humor). As Ash said it's ~2.5 hours, but you're hooked. I recommend Black Mass for a more "gritty and real" portrayal of the city, its surrounding areas, and real characters. Though a cinema layperson, I think it's a prime example where I see and appreciate the full production (+ a good dose of bias as a staunch New Englander). This includes cinematography and set location leaning into the "drab" working-class suburb feel neither cheesy nor stereotypical; hair/makeup capturing Bulger's look; Depp's ability to convey a sense of both "neighborhood boy" and "pure evil" in demeanor, mannerisms, and tone; lighting that enhances all of those points (notably Bulger's blue eyes, but also seemingly pools of black in any given scene). It also stays true to its roots as a story about Whitey Bulger and the Winter Hill Gang. While there is some context in his relationship with John Connolly, it does not delve too deep, and brother Billy Bulger is more of a character in passing despite having a story of his own. The recently reunited for a movie called The Goldfinger...or Once Upon a Time in Hong Kong. It recently came out, so I have no idea if it is any good.

I was late to the party, had to scroll to check. Knew someone would mention ‘Whitey’. Also the only reason the Italian Mob could never get a stronghold in Boston. Black Mass 👍🏼 disturbing but awesome.

No, it's a direct rip of a Hong Kong film - Internal Affairs - both are excellent in their own ways, but I still lean towards the original despite the amazing work from Jack, Leo and Matt.

Bostonian here. That is correct. This film weaves a couple of facts about "Whitey" Bulger into its fiction. The first is that Bulger's FBI handler routinely tipped him off to protect Bulger as an asset, so in a way he had a man inside the police. The other is that "Whitey" Bulger -- mob boss and serial killer -- had a brother, William "Billy" Bulger, who was actually president of the Massachusetts State Senate... so there's a theme of evil/good duality there (although Billy Bulger's administration was rife with corruption... a criminal enterprise of a different stripe).
