Only Martin Scorsese could get away with killing every A-list actor in Hollywood and make a hit out of it.

@jnagarya519 Год назад
@@vincecommando7575 Who are "most people? -- oh, right: you as an individual. "Infernal Affairs" is superior. All Scorsese did was create a confused mishmash by grafting on a "Whitey" Bulger character who is Italian -- Costello; and who, because of that, wouldn't have survived on the "Irish" streets of South Boston -- the Italian mob was situated in Boston's NORTH end. And the two gangs were RIVALS. Worse, Scorsese's Italian Costello's gang is comprised of South Boston "Irish" -- which for obvious reasons couldn't happen. (The two thugs from Providence depicted as shaking down a store owner in South Boston were "Italian" -- again, which would never have happened.) For an accurate depiction of that history see "Black Mass" (with Johnny Depp as Bulger). And I'll also throw in the superb "Donnie Brasco" with Pacino and Depp.
@jnagarya519
@jnagarya519 Год назад
@@vincecommando7575 Yeah -- Scorsese would have thought of the plot on his own except that he didn't. Again, Scorsese copied the original onto which he tacked a confused mishmash associating Costello with "Whitey" Bulger, but entirely ignoring the cultural incoherence that produced. Compare it with the excellent "Black Mass". And I'm not impressed by actors who are simply being products of their environment and upbringing -- Damen, as example.
@vincecommando7575
@vincecommando7575 Год назад
@@jnagarya519 You don't know much about movies do you? Every single director and writer has borrowed or stole countless ideas for movies. I'm not denying that Martin Scorsese did base the characters of Frank Costello, Arnold French and Colin Sullivan on Jimmy "Whitey" Bulger, Stevie "The Rifleman" Flemmi and John "Zip" Connelly. However he wasn't trying to do an accurate portrayal of the characters. Instead Scorsese wanted them to be similar but separate from the characters.

I don't see this mentioned much but very clearly this is a movie about fatherhood. It's insinuated that Sullivan is impotent, and we know Costello never had kids so it's possible he is too. We know how important Costigan's dad is to him and everyone else, and we assume he also became a father. We see both Queenan and Costello take on surrogate father roles to both Costigan and Sullivan and I assume Queenan was like a father to Dignam as well which is probably why he probably finished the job. Ultimately I believe it's about legacy, about what the dearly departed leave behind and who will remember them and how.

What he gives Colin, the Matt Damon character, in the back of the car has Gotta be his 1st mob cell phone or something. Idk what means they had been communicating with b4 that moment but I'm like 99% sure. Cuz look at the staging and the positions their in and contrast it with the scene of Costello, French, and Dicaprio after he breaks the guy's teeth. How casually he give him the phone and the intense, seriousness and ceremonial way he gives Colin the phone in the backseat. It like shows how cool he was with Billy and his family and how like a son he really saw Billy more than Colin Even tho Colin was with him longer. Too many scenes are ripped straight out of the original for The Departed to be its own thing. And I also prefer the original movie's deeper Buddhism themes and ideas versus the in-your-face movie that is The Departed. Shit, even the original soundtrack is better. And Tony Leung is always a win. The sequels are also good, making it a very strong Hong Kong trilogy of films, compared to the stand alone movie that is The Departed.

Not my favorite Scorcese (that's still Goodfellas), but easily one of the best remakes ever made. Yet I do still prefer the HK original, Infernal Affairs. Leaner, more tense, but mostly a bit more ambiguous about good and evil. But don't get me wrong, The Departed is still an a great movie......it's just that Infernal Affairs is even better.

The Departed is a very good movie but I think the original *Infernal Affairs Trilogy* is much better and comprehensive. The only downside for some people is that you have to read subtitles.

The first time I saw this movie, one of my friends brought the DVD over to another friends house and his parents wanted to watch it too. They were devout Christians I've known my whole life. Most awkward few hours ever.

Matt Damon's character talking about getting out with his girlfriend was referencing the relationship not Frank. He's Irish and they stick it out in relationships no matter what.

Three of my favorite lines ever came from this movie. "If you knew what we did, we would not be good at our jobs. We would be Cunts. Are you calling us Cunts?" then "Maybe, maybe not, maybe go fuck yourself." and "Who told you I have delicate sensibilities?" I say those to lines so much. To me this is one of the best movies ever made. I wish I could watch it for the first time again.

Hey, new to your channel (watched a bunch in the last week) but towards the end of the video you were asking if stuff like this really happens and in fact it does! An irish mobster named Whitey Bulger is largely the inspiration for Frank Costello in this film. Over the years numerous investigations should have put him away but they would always get stopped and no one knew why- the reason was because he was an FBI informant and he was more valuable on the streets than in custody, despite numerous people dying at his hands. I second an earlier comment by the way that wanted you to watch Gone Baby Gone and The Town. Two more great Boston movies.

Departed is a well crafted remake (of Infernal Affairs), elevated by some great performances. It is also one of the best examples of dramatic irony (where the audience knows what the characters do not) that I have seen on film.
