Nope, Qui-Gonn was right. Even Georges Lucas himself said that Anakin/darth Vader IS the chosen one, not Luke. Luke helped him at the end to fulfill Anakin's destiny to turn back to the light and bring balance to the force :)
29:30 No, Anakin was the Chosen One.Luke redeemed him, and that allowed Anakin to fulfill his purpose of destroying the Sith and restoring Balance. That is until Disney Wars came along...
The little red and blue cube Watto rolled is rigged to land in red to favor him, which is why he’s surprised when it lands on blue and accuses Qui Gon of cheating
Great reaction! Some small tidbits about Darth Maul, he and Darth Sidious are Sith Lords, not former Jedi. The Sith are an ancient religion that are basically the epitome of all evil in Star Wars and were thought to have died out millenia ago. Sith are much more powerful and much more evil and dangerous than dark Jedi. And as you might be able to tell, when they become Sith Lords, they forgo their original names and take on monikers that begin with Darth (Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Darth Sidious etc.). The Sith also follow a doctrine called the Rule of 2, which posits that there can only be 2 Sith Lords at any given time, one master to embody power, and one apprentice to crave it (unlike Jedi knights which have tens of thousands of members). The vast majority of Sith were not Jedi, although a few Jedi have been known to turn to the dark side and become Sith Lords. It’s very rare though. Unlike Darth Vader/Anakin, neither Darth Sidious nor Darth Maul were ever Jedi. Also the “paint” on Darth Maul’s face isn’t paint at all. He belongs to an alien species called Zabraks which have horns and brightly coloured/patterned skin.
Cool to see you back with Star Wars. Some people do dislike the prequel trilogy, however most of that is from older fans who grew up with the original trilogy. Star Wars fans born in the 90s and younger are far more likely to enjoy them. Similarly, people who grew up with the prequels are less likely to enjoy the new new trilogy (Ep 7, 8, and 9), but even younger fans seem to enjoy those. Either way, they're all worth watching. You said you planned on watching all three in one night, so I hope to see them pop up soon! :)
they use the wilhelm scream because it gained iconic status when it was used in the first star wars movie! it's kinda a tradition for them to use it in star wars :^)
Natalie Portman played Queen Padme Amidala, and Keira Knightley played her decoy. Both were quite young here, but Natalie, at this time, was more well known as actress.
Hi professor, I have a movie suggestion when you finish Star Wars, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe. It's part of a trilogy, if you don't end up liking it, then you can just stop there but if you do like it, well, now you have the rest of the trilogy to look forward to.
padme is only 14 in this movie. she’s a queen to her entire planet of naboo and has had to grow up quickly, her acting “serious” and “mature” is all an act to seem worthy to people that may think she’s too young to be queen. the facade always drops when she’s with anakin however, because she can act more like a kid and be herself
i was in my mid 20s when this came out, my dad was born inthe 40s and he went with me opening day for my 2nd viewing. but anyway he had told me (and i confirmed by watching it) he told me the Pod race reminded him a lot of the chariot race from Ben Hur 1959
I know that I didn't mind Jar-Jar when I was a kid, he felt more like a kid audience surrogate, but as an adult, he can get kinda grating. I did just about poop my pants in the theater when Darth Maul whipped out that double sided saber, though. Going to see Phantom Menace with my family is a core memory for me! I loved all the planets they visited, the underwater city, Coruscant, Naboo's palace, they all stood out so well to me. "LEDs in the dress?" Sort of! They were powered by a car battery, which is why she never walks in that dress! EDIT: If you liked the lightsaber fights, I can't wait for you to see the ones in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith!
Only bringing it up cause it's not a spoiler. Darth Vader was the one who destroyed the emperor and the darkness in himself. He brought balance to the force, so he still is the chosen one, not Luke. But it took his son's love to get there
As a fan of the original trilogy when I was a kid, i felt like this movie had really high highs and some pretty low lows. But the Duel of the Fates battle - the choir and the super rad lightsaber fight - will always be one of my favorite scenes. I second the calls for Clone Wars. I was a latecomer to it, dismissing it as being a little kids show, but man by the end it's SO GOOD and really adds so much to the characters that the prequel trilogy couldn't get to.
"There's always a bigger fish." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Ahmed Best. Actor Preparation Fact: Ewan McGregor studied many of Sir Alec Guinness's films, including Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), to ensure accuracy in everything, from his accent to the pacing of his words. Cameos Cameos Fact: Producer Rick McCallum appears on the right, in a floppy wide-brim hat, when Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) meets Senator Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Sound designer Ben Burtt appears to the left of Rick McCallum (with goatee). Visual effects supervisor John Knoll plays the Naboo pilot who gets killed during the space battle. Sound Effects Fact: The sound of the underwater monsters growling near the beginning of the film was made by the main sound technician Ben Burtt's three-year-old daughter. The sound of her crying was recorded and the frequency lowered to obtain the sound heard in the film. To create the sounds of the spectators during the pod race scene, sound designer Ben Burtt took a recorder to a San Francisco 49ers game, and recorded the crowd's reactions. Double Duty Fact: At the time of the film's release, the producers ran a disinformation campaign to suggest that Natalie Portman played both Padmé and The Queen at all times. In fact, they are not always the same person. For many sections of the film, notably those where The Queen is wearing the black outfit with the huge feather headdress, she is actually a decoy, played by Keira Knightley. The real queen, Portman, is actually disguised as a handmaiden. Various conflicting public statements make it extremely difficult to figure out who is who. Whole websites are devoted to figuring out which actress is playing which. However I have seen some people that can tell which is which. The Rest Of The Story Fact: Liam Neeson was so eager to be in the film that he signed on without having read the script. Keira Knightley's parents tried to convince her not to audition, but the twelve-year-old actress still sought a role, given she was a Star Wars fan. Jake Lloyd has said that he retired from acting because of the trauma he experienced after playing Anakin Skywalker. According to Lloyd, other children constantly teased him about the role, for example, making lightsaber sounds whenever he walked by. Lloyd also said that the situation was made worse because, in his opinion, the film did not meet the fans' expectations. Despite this, Lloyd has reprised the role of Anakin in several video games and has appeared at Star Wars conventions and events.
As someone who just watched the Star Wars movies for the first time last year, I have to say that I actually prefer these prequel films. I love the originals too, but really really loved this trilogy! Excited for the next reaction!
Hey hey, glad you're back man! Great reaction. Many of your complaints (Jar Jar's vocal style being grating and hard to understand, and Amidala's forced stilted manner especially) mirror my own disappointments when i saw this in theaters at age 15. It's not quite the new Star Wars movie I'd always hoped for as a SW-obsessed kid, but now looking back, i can appreciate it for what it does do well, which is a ton. You recognized the greatness that is "Duel of the Fates" immediately -- it's probably the very best piece John Williams has ever composed, which is saying a LOT.
I feel like a big issue with the trilogies is just age. People who were kids when the originals came out HATED the prequels. Then people who were kids when the prequels came out HATED the sequels. Everyone's mad cause their favorite movies maybe didn't age with them they way they wanted them to. (That being said, I'm a prequels kid and very excited about all this)
No the prequel hate is unjustified in every way possible. jar Jar, Pademe, Anakin. All unjustified. I just watched the sequels a few years ago (not the Disney ones) and I loved them. They were great 👍 Disney came and messed it all up because they wanted to basically reboot Star Wars in their image Aka “modern woke ideology”
2:50 - Yeah.... the Prequels were highly maligned by the "Original Trilogy" fans... and while I'm one of them OT fans (I was 10 when the first movie came out)... I actually enjoyed the Prequels when they were released. I was ostracized a lot for my opinion of them. Were they "perfect"? Not even.... but they were enjoyable to me. No spoilers: But Episode III is going to blow your mind. 3:10 - Not really, no. While the Trade Federation guys were done practically, Jar Jar was always intended to be a 3D rendered CGI character (the first one). Cut it a little slack, it was "cutting edge" for the time. Plus, Ahmed Best (who played the character) was given so much hate for this, he nearly ended himself. 3:40 - I will never forget seeing THAT shot on a theatrical scene.... it took my breath. 8:05 - Same architecture, but different city. You're thinking of Mos Eisley, and dammit, I'm drawing a blank on the name of this city. 9:25 - Qui-Gon Jinn. He is Obi-Wan Kenobi's master. Obi-Wan is a Padawan here. For context, this movie takes place 33 years before Episode IV. 13:30 - Maul was never a Jedi. If you want his backstory, you'll actually need to watch the Clone Wars series (which, I recommend anyway, after you've seen Episode III).... so, yeah, don't discount those animated series. I've met no one who started out dismissing them, being dismissive after watching them. 13:45 - Say what you want, but it was a fair move when you consider that the die in question was loaded (off balance) to come up Red every time. Watto knew Qui-Gon used the Force to do that, but he couldn't admit it without admitting that the die itself was rigged. 15:55 - Yep. Star Wars Pod Racer. It's on Steam. 22:00 - To explain that: Anakin is 9 years old here. Jedi Younglings are usually found very early in their lives, and brought to the Jedi Temple before they can form attachments to their natural family. Anakin has already formed a very strong attachment to his mother. Children trained to be Jedi are usually between 2-3 years old (in human years), though some occasionally are brought in even younger. 25:47 - Darth Maul is played by Ray Park (Toad from the X-Men movie), and is a highly skilled martial artist. To this day, he will perform with fans who think they can out duel him. Also, (spoiler alert) he has a cameo in the movie Fanboys (which I HIGHLY recommend you watch!) 26:20 - Remember, Anakin was a good pilot. He'd already won a pod-race just a few days ago.... so, that cockpit was indeed the safest place he could have been. 27:25 - The biggest difference between the Jedi and the Sith. Qui-Gon is resting, recentering himself... the Jedi way. While Maul is pacing back and forth like a cornered animal just waiting to strike. Sucking up all his pent up rage... 27:50 - Oh, you just wait.... 28:55 - Yeah.... about that..... watch the Clone Wars animated series. You'll find out. 29:35 - Something important to point out.... what Yoda said here is that basically, HE disagrees with Anakin being Obi-Wan's Padawan, but that the Jedi Council over-rode his objections. Yes, Yoda is part of the Council, but they go with majority votes, so Anakin got more votes to be Obi-Wan's Padawan, than objections to it. I'll go into this more in the next two videos, but always take note of the dialogue. Even if it CAN be cringeworthy.
I appreciate it if you’d watch anything else involving Edward Burns (one of the soldiers in Saving Pvt. Ryan) My top 3 suggestions: CONFIDENCE SHE'S THE ONE SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK
fun fact: that is not all of darth maul! he’s in the star wars the clone wars and star wars rebels (both are shows) i HIGHLY recommend u check out those shows especially the clone wars, it takes place in between episode 2 and 3 and is probably the greatest star wars media of all time imo, if ur looking for a lot of lightsaber combat, more of anakin and obi wan, and an amazing plot and lore, i highly suggest it :)
after you finish these 3 movies, u should watch the Clone Wars animated series (if thats not already on your list) and it will make you love these movies so much more
This was released in 1999. One of the last good years for Hollywood films. I can't agree this is a good movie but I'm glad you didn't gush all over it the way the people who were children when they saw it do now. They've bought into the lie that Lucas had an overarching plan. He didn't. The prequels are filled with retcons and idiotic callbacks. Star Wars Racer was released to a number of home ports and can be bought digitally on the PS4. The best way to experience it was the arcade though with a pod cockpit to sit in. Also despite what I'm sure a number of commenters will say the Clone Wars animated series is trash and not worth anyone's time.
22:13 THANK YOU! I've been saying this for years, but numbskulls determined to hate the film, just refuse to proccess the information. Yet here you're watching for the first time, and immediately get it.
After this trilogy, you should watch Rogue One and Solo then move on to The Clone Wars animated series (chronological order). You won't be disappointed.
