As someone who knew the twist going in (mainly because it’s so iconic that you can’t go anywhere without it being mentioned), I’ve got to say that it’s still extremely effective. The movie still holds up 20+ years later

You weren’t supposed to get it. You were supposed to be completely surprised by the twist at the end. Back then, people were SERIOUS about spoiling this one. It's funny you noticed the red door knob in Malcolm's house. I remember hearing that Shyamalan used the color red in several scenes to highlight significant 'moods'. Like the red balloon floating near the little room at the top of the stairs when Cole was locked in at the b'day party. And the red shawl/blanket that Malcolm's wife is wrapped in when she is sleeping.
@lunacouer

Bruce Willis was actually int his by accident. He had a movie fall through and he and Disney came to an agreement of 2 movies for a discounted rate. Bruce himself said he read the script and didn't know his character was dead until the last 3 pages. And that's what sold him on the movie. He thought if we can pull if off it will be a hit.

It's cold when the ghosts are around because ghosts need energy to manifest themselves. The easiest energy to have access to is heat. I saw this in a theatre when it first came out and figured out the twist about the same time you did. I remember watching the restaurant scene and thinking to myself "This is weird how she is reacting to him. She's acting like he isn't even there." and then the I see dead people scene made it click to me. The thing is the giveaway that put it together for me wasn't the I see dead people part. It was the they don't know they are dead part of the line that made the light bulb click on in my head.

This film came out pre-internet, pre-streaming services, which of course made it a lot easier to keep the plot twist a secret before its box-office release. It was a huge-box office performer as many people returned to watch it multiple times to analyze the clues, but also to experience the twist with a new audience. I think I went back with friends at least three different times! As you can imagine, this made M. Night Shyamalan a star filmmaker overnight!

Back then movies didn't have all these complicated plot twist, now it's the norm so people go into these movies expecting it and actually look for them. Watch some of the reactors watch older movies from the 70s or 80s like "The Exorcist", they always expect some final surprise plot ending. We didn't go into movies trying to break down, decipher and analyze everything. We just watched.

Love this movie so much. Congrats on figuring out the twist so early on! I don't think the audience is meant to catch on to it until the end, but there are tons of clues planted throughout the film. Some people pick up on them but most seem to get so caught up in the story that they don't figure it out until Malcolm does. Back when the movie first came out, one reviewer mentioned there was a great twist at the end but didn't say what it was. I did know that Cole could see "dead people" so I thought, "If I were writing this movie and wanted a cool twist at the end, what would it be?" When I actually saw the movie, I found out I was right. Tragically, the woman who murdered the little girl was indeed her mother. This was a case of a rare psychological/behavioral disorder known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSP). That's when a caregiver (often a mother) wants attention and goes after it by seeking medical help for the person in their care. They'll insist the child/person is ill and will do things like lying about symptoms (that don't really exist), doing something to alter or affect test results, and falsifying medical records. People usually don't suspect them because they generally appear to be extremely loving and distraught over the "illness." But they will sometimes go so far as to cause actual physical harm to induce symptoms. In this case, the mother was poisoning her daughter to make her vomit, etc., and she did it so frequently that her daughter actually died. We know from a line in the movie that the remaining daughter was now having similar symptoms. If Cole hadn't helped expose the mother, that little girl would have also eventually died.

The reason they sought out the little boy was because he was their conduit to the living world to resolve whatever was "keeping them here". BTW, if you think back over the movie, anytime you saw the color red, that was supposed to signify death: the doorknob, the dead girl's mom's dress, the tent, etc. Also, that was M. Night playing the ER doc in the movie. And, kudos on getting that Bruce was a ghost - 98% don't guess that! * If you haven't seen "The Green Mile", it is a MUST! You WILL NOT be disappointed!!

Spirits are attracted to mediums and psychics. Since they are the only ones who can usually see a spirit. For many spirits there kind of like riddles. Figure out the riddle, you can figure out how to help. Also it gets cold because it’s the entity, the entity takes in heat, energy. Bad ghosts or hostile ones are hard to help. But experienced mediums who work together usually have very little trouble with one. I’m a spiritualist 😂

I really wish American reviewers would draw more attention to the opening credits and the composer of the film. In this case, James Newton Howard. It is such a sad and powerful score. It really sets the tone for the film. Listen to some of the best, classic composers: Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. Dope that you got the twist early on! I will say that I was a bit disappointed that you got it and didn't experience that "WTF" moment we all did way back in 99-00 when this came out. In any case, about your question of spirits and the cold: Have you ever been in a situation when you could feel the "energy" of a room? I mean, either the excitement of the place or even the tension? That's real bro. Energy is real. And because ghosts and spirits exist in a higher plane than this 3rd dimension we live on, they have to manifest themselves here by drawing energy from this plane. Think of it as water condensing on a mirror. When enough of the energy (heat) is drawn out, they can manifest. Your phone has technology on it that can detect spirits (or any energy disruption) through the electromagnetic components. There are apps that you can download to detect EMF (electromagnetic fields) and show when the energy of a place is being shifted or fluctuating--i.e., energy disturbances, possibly even ghosts or spirits. Muhahahahaha

Yes it surprised me and also disappointed me, because it took away some of the enjoyment. Then I thought " Oh, he's paying attention". Its nice for a change to get a thoughtful focused reactor instead of the typical lame reactors who use movies as a backdrop for their lame, unfunny comedy routines.

So the scene when Bruce Willis is sitting on the bench was right behind my house in Philly. It’s called St. Albans Court. The church where the boy runs into was right in front of my house on Fitzwater and Graysferry, but the inside of the church was actually another church in Society Hill. Great movie though. Perhaps the only great movie M. Night made.

I watched this in theaters when I was 12. Shalamayan started his career with a bang but kind of lost his hand in his next movies. I think the success kind of got into his head, and he was kind of a prussioner of his next movies all having a twist ending.

1. I recently saw a clip of Haley Joel Osment (yes he play Forrest Gump Jr.) as an adult. Still has the same face and was easy to recognize. 2. I got it when his wife was celebrating/mourning their anniversary with only one table placement. That and Cole is the only person he interacts with. I was waiting for my (now ex) wife to finger it out but she didn't get it until the reveil. I didn't say anything to mess it up for her. 3, You caught on relatively early. 4. Malcolm couldn't pass over until he saved Cole because he failed Vincent.

You are the 1st reactor I've seen who has stated (though you seem to double back) that this is not a horror film. And it's not a horror film. Shyamalan (did you recognize him playing the doctor who reported the mom?) makes spiritual, very human movies. He just clothes them in a borrowed genre. But the richly-emotional human story is present from 1st frame to last. I keep going back to Rod Serling, who addressed a lot of political, social, and psychological issues using irrelevant genres. Crime stories, westerns, modern & Civil war, the cultural mysticism of Appalachia, 'modern' witchcraft, time travel, space travel, aliens, Cold War motifs, post-apocalypses... Serling told all-too-human stories against borrowed genres. They called him a scifi writer, but he didn't always write in scifi. Shyamalan has been given the reputation of jumping genres and using the gimmick of the unexpected 'twist'. But for Serling and Shyamalan both they are misunderstood. Sixth Sense is not a 'ghost' movie. Signs is not an 'alien invasion' movie. Unbreakable is not a 'superhero' movie. Those genres are costuming over very deep and very real stories. The 'twist' is another illusion, born of the viewer applying expectations and preconceptions to what's being watched. Their own preconceptions set them up, blinding them to what is not spotlighted but also not hidden either. You were the 1st I've seen to begin to get past seeing what you expected to see. We're all ghost-like in that we see what we want until something firm and inarguable stops us. But if we listen and ignore our expectations, we see more clearly. You managed that more than anyone one else I've seen go through this film (including me). But don't get lulled in by the apparent genre in Shyamalan movies. Look deeper and enjoy how he uses the genre as a tool, not a defining boundary.

It's definitely a great twist and you weren't supposed to get it, but it's awesome that you did. As great as this movie is and its twist the movie had to break its own rules in order to set up the twist. All of the ghosts that came to Cole aside from Bruce Willis had their injuries/cause of death on full display, also none of the other ghosts engaged in back and forth conversations with Cole the same way Bruce's character did if you do a rewatch notice that the other ghosts make specific statements which if you listen when the little girl's father plays the tape the ghost girl is actually repeating what she said in that tape "I'm feeling much better now." But the main thing they did to break the rules to set up the twist is that when all the other ghosts are around it's very cold, so cold you can see Cole's breath even in doors, but any time he's around Bruce's character he never has the cold breath, his wife never does either except for at the end when Bruce realizes that he's been dead the entire time. It's still a great movie and I enjoy watching it every time I do, definitely one of M. NIght's best works before his name became synonymous with bad movies and worst plot twists.
@fluffybacon
@fluffybacon 2 года назад
That isn't all completely true. First and foremost, Cole DID see Bruce as he died, with the bullet wound. We saw Bruce as he saw himself, not realising that he was dead. If you watch the film again, you can see Cole being scared and weary of Bruce until he opens up to him. You even see Cole grimmace when he see's Bruce's back (presumably the exit wound of the gunshot). The other thing is rooms being cold except around Bruce: Cole specifically said that the room becomes cold when the ghost is emotional, hence why Anna started getting cold as Bruce was realising he was dead, that was the time when Bruce became very emotional. And not all ghosts repeated what they said when dying, just the overly emotional ones (it's assumed Kyra went straight to Cole after dying) and the mother who slashed her wrists. Other ghosts had conversations with Cole, even before he opened up to them properly; hense how he knows about his teacher's stuttering past and how his school used to be a hanging ground (more specifically, how he knew which people were doing the hanging). This movie is well known for it's plot twist at the end, but the best part about it for me was the whole story; how everything was so fleshed out.
