This was around the time when Tipper Gore and the PMRC were trying to censor music. Dee Snider (the lead singer) destroyed her when he spoke to Congress. You should DEFINITELY react to him speaking at the Congressional hearings, he's brilliant and well-spoken
Indeed, Dee Snider & Frank Zappa took on the Senate, in committee, & basically destroyed them, because they had erudite arguments. Without their efforts most of the music you enjoy, and make would have been lobotomized & made anodyne decades ago. These events took place fairly early on the movement of the extreme right wing Christians into politics. I'll leave you to join the dots. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S0Vyr1TylTE.html
@@CB-ju4mz the word high seem to have trigged some people back in the 70's and 80's. heck, even during the sixties. the word high was problematic to CBS when the Doors went on the Ed Soliven Show
When you have Dee Snider, Frank Zappa, and John Denver standing shoulder to shoulder, brothers in arms, and John Denver is pissed off... You know you done went and goofed
The actor playing father was also the ROTC commander in Animal House. He is re-creating his role in that movie where he was dressing down one of the cadets. It is almost word for word.
Check out Motley Crue. They did their makeup better than any woman out there. Check out their video for "Smokin in the boys room " that was the beginning of "Hair Metal'
Dee Snider once heard an interviewer referring to their musical style as "glam rock". Dee immediately corrected them. "Glam means glamorous. Look at us! We're NOT glamorous, we're hideous. We're hid rock!"
Regardless what anybody thinks of them, if it wasn't for their lead singer completely outclassing congress and preventing Tipper Gore from achieving her agenda of controlling music, the last 30 years of music may have been very controlled. Only thing that came out of that circus was the Parental Advosory stickers on albums.
I wasn’t a big fan of the “Explicit Lyrics” labels but it wasn’t a big deal to me considering the alternative, CENSORSHIP. I personally would like a similar label put on all music that used Pitch Correction, Auto Tune, and other A.I. technology in its production. Our government is now trying to censor internet speech. They are calling posts that are FACTS, that they don’t like, Russian Disinformation, and are wanting to get them removed like they did before the 2020 election. 🙄😂 Our government shutdown TRUE information that was bad for Biden. Mark Zuckerberg is in CYA mode now because he was an accomplice to tyranny and he is afraid Trump will get reelected. He should lose Facebook to forfeiture as he used the platform to interfere, manipulate, and censor the 2020 election. He took down TRUE FACTUAL NEWS ARTICLES, AND SHUTDOWN THE ACCOUNTS OF THOSE POSTING TRUTH AND FACTS JUST DAYS AND WEEKS BEFORE THE 2020 ELECTION.
This is also part of the reason the 2000 election was controversial : remember Florida ? AL Gore got the fewest Democrat votes in Broward County for a Democrat ever, why? Because one of the groups the pmrc went after was 2 Live Crew, from Broward county, and some people remembered it.
About 10 years ago Dee Snider did a version of this song for kids cancer research/awareness. It's amazing and heart wrenching at the same time. Fair warning, you'll probably tear up watching it.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried watching it as well. Its amazing that just by changing the instruments and tempo, you can get another powerful song and different emotions.
Yeah I'm 70 years old, I have been donating to St Jude hospital since BEFORE Dee Snider came out with his version of his song for the kids cancer research. I tell you what it made me bawl like a baby what I heard his song. He just did a great job for raising money for all cancer research. God Bless and keep him safe. Some people think that rockers have no heart but we know different. 💋💝💓💓💞💞❣️🔥🔥🔥🔥💯 If for some reason you have never heard it P. Please review that song. Maybe if you do some of the other people that watch you will go ahead and donate money for the same cause. It's bad enough when an adult has cancer but when you see even a baby born with it, or catching it even when their not but a month old or older. You would have to be a cold-hearted " with no soul at all SOB for it not to tear your heart up.😢😢😢💔💔💔 If the song for this is still out there Please , Please, Please do a reaction to it. Loved your review on twisted sister. God Bless Ya. Sending much love ❤❤❤ to you and yours stay safe and healthy.
He played Lt Niedermeyer in the John Landis movie Animal House, ranting about "pledge pins" - and in Landis' "Twilight Zone" one of the Vietnam grunts is heard to say "I told you we shouldn't have fragged Niedermeyer"
“Your life is trite and jaded, boring and confiscated”. Wonder how many of my peers grew up singing this song and are now living the exact life they mocked back in high school. Working jobs they hate to buy stuff they don’t want to impress people they don’t like. The matrix is strong.
@@JaquelineGoodspeed lol. No we didn’t. A vast majority are or were doing the corporate grind. Swollen and unhealthy from a diet of booze and massive portion meals. Any class reunion is the same. The outliers that lead their own life and played by their own rules are the exception. There absolutely are some that did not comply but they are the few.
@@davesage4931 It's true the matrix is strong, I don't know about "the vast majority" but I haven't changed. I measure success in happiness, freedom and knowledge. There is a certain freedom in wealth, but it's generally not worth selling out to the corporate grind. I made a decent living in construction, working hard and loving life, playing in bands and never losing the spirit that this, and many other, songs encompass. @jaquelineGoodspeed I'm with you, hope you're living your best life!!
Dee Snider's wife Suzette made all of the costumes for the band. If you watch any live footage, these guys are TIGHT!!! That comes from playing thousands of shows.
BP, you might want to check out the Congressional hearings when Dee Snyder (the lead singer) took a bunch of senators to school. Their wives (The PMRC) had them put forth legislation to "ban" certain music artists over "vulgar and violent lyrics". They came with a list called "The Filthy Fifteen". During the hearing, John Denver, Frank Zappa and Dee Snyder all testified against the legislation. Dee Snyder was the shocker, though. His testimony enraged Al Gore and his wife Tipper.
The story was that they came up with that look, and someone said "You look like a bunch of twisted sisters" and a band name was born. This was about when a lot of the LA hair metal bands were wearing a lot of girlish makeup, but TS was significantly older than most of them, so they didn't try to look pretty (like Poison), they went for looking crazy.
My son, 46, had a Twisted Sister poster on a wall in his room. He was 13, really sick, and began hallucinating when his fever was high. He was freaking out because they kept popping out of the wall and running at him in his bed! LOL I finally had to move him into the spare room and promise him I'd lock his bedroom door so they couldn't get out! Bwahaha! He felt the fool after his fever broke.
My favorite performance by Dee Snider was when he testified in front of Congress and chewed out Tipper Gore and all of her PTA friends. They never anticipated that a long haired, heavy metal singer could be well spoken and intelligent.
He showed up in torn jeans and pulled the speech out of his pocket that was written on notebook paper, and laid waste to those who opposed. I love Dee Snider.
Blackie Lawless from WASP, Frank Zappa, and John Denver testified, too, at some point. The hard rockers were worried about how Denver was going to view the issue, but he was totally against any kind of censorship.
I was 9 years old Myself lol, I remember My dad had a Major Freak out first time he saw an Album cover of Twisted Sister lol, Though I can say what he said on YT lol
Fun reaction. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s. These Twisted Sister videos came out when I was like 11. They were like a rock & roll version of a Wiley Coyote/Roadrunner cartoon. lol
Dee Snider (vocals) of Twisted Sister loved the comedy movie 'Animal House' from 1978 ... especially the character 'Douglas Neidermeyer' played by actor Mark Metcalf... In 1984, Snider thought they could use a character like 'Neidermeyer' in a comedic music video for the single "We're not gonna take it" ... and then realized, "Why don't we just get the actor who player Neidermeyer? It's not like he's out there curing cancer..." 😂 So, Mark Metcalf was hired and the music video was a huge hit on MTV in 1984... Snider said that the 'dad' in the music video was based on his own father - he was always hard on him and his siblings... The scene where the dad is yelling and trashing the room happened to Dee Snider for real... In any case, Mark Metcalf returned for the music video for "I wanna rock" ... where he played the teacher. Twisted Sister's 3rd album 'Stay Hungry' would sell 4x platinum and made the band a concert sensation... but some folks were not laughing. While on tour in 1984 w/ Twisted Sister in Texas, Dee Snider was arrested for cursing onstage... a parent found his language 'obscene' and pressed charges (Snider said that he had cursed countless times in the band's club shows in NY for years... he never expected this in Texas) and Twisted Sister became a target of conservative and religious groups. The PMRC demanded hearings in Congress in 1985 to regulate music they deemed "obscene"... Prince, Judas Priest and Twisted Sister all made the "filthy fifteen" list... Tipper Gore claimed that Twisted Sister's song 'Under the blade' was about 'sadomasochism'... (Dee Snider retorted that it was about a band member's throat operation) In 1985, Dee Snider appeared in Congress to testify... he revealed that he was practicing Christian, happily married and never did drugs or alcohol... When they accused him of 'promoting violence' w/ the music video for "We're not gonna take it"... Snider told them that the video concept came from a 'Roadrunner/ Wile E. Coyote' cartoon episode. In the end, the music industry caved in to demands and put the 'Parental advisory' sticker on albums that had 'coarse language'. Unfortunately, fans were disappointed that Dee Snider was not the big, bad character that he portrayed himself as in Twisted Sister... and the band's popularity fell dramatically by 1985... The band released their 4th album 'Come out and play' and it sold poorly... In 1987, they released the album 'Love is for suckers'... and after it failed, Dee Snider quit Twisted Sister, thus ending the band. Years later, Dee Snider became a popular radio DJ and championed 80's rock in an era when it was not popular. In 2001, Twisted Sister reunited to play the Concert for New York City after the 9/11 attacks... Twisted Sister would tour playing select shows across the world annually but wouldn't release any new music. In 2015, Twisted Sister drummer A.J. Pero passed away from a heart attack 😪 As a result, Twisted Sister (Dee Snider, bassist Mark 'Animal' Mendoza, guitarists Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda) announced a final tour that ended in 2016 and capped their career. In the 70's, guitarist Jay Jay French formed Twisted Sister in NYC in 1972 and they became popular in the local rock scene dressing in drag and playing rock n' roll (Hence, the name Twisted Sister) ... Dee Snider (lead vocals) joined in 1976 and he was brash and outspoken and audiences loved him. Snider may have dressed in drag onstage but he was ready to throw down against anybody who crossed him on or offstage... By the early 80's, Twisted Sister had no record out but drew so many fans to their shows across New York that they made a living on their merch and ticket sales alone... A UK label offered to bring them to England, where Snider's stage presence and outspoken character won Twisted Sister an audience in the UK. The band released their first album 'Under the Blade' in 1982... Atlantic Records in Europe signed them and released 2nd album "You can't stop rock n' roll" in 1983. It was MTV that broke Twisted Sister to commercial success in N. America w/ their 3rd album 'Stay Hungry'.

My ex toured with Twisted for 10 years, all over the world, as the drum tech. I heard storiessss! Lol. I got to go backstage and after shows hang with them awhile…they are all such nice people! No drugs! But, I heard about early days touring with bathtubs filled with Jello…girls chasing Dee down the hotel hallways with SCISSORS to get a snip of his real hair! Oh yeah.
Getting to watch you react to this video/song for the first time is gold! We laughed our butts off in the 80's and now get to relive it with you! Banger!
Twisted Sister were on Top of the Pops in the 80s and she turned off the tv saying how bad music had gotten. Next day she was driving me somewhere and a song came on the radio and to my delight she said why don’t you like music like this, I had to laugh and pointed out it was them, when the DJ announced it she was shocked
The 'dad' is an actor named Mark Metcalf. He was famous for playing essentially the same role in the Animal House movie and played this character in a few TS videos.
This was the first rock concert I ever went to. Concert was festival seating. I was in the front right below where Dee Snider was standing. Had to hold on to a chain link fence below the stage to stay upright because of the crowd. I remember some guy used me as a ladder to get onstage. The band member with the sunglasses 😎 intercepted him, spun him around and flung him back into the crowd. One of the best concerts I ever went to. Alot of rock bands in the eighties did makeup. Twisted Sister just didn't pretend they were a pretty boy hair band. Absolutely loved their energy.🤟🔥🎸
Dee is a major advocate for the rights of musicians and artists being protected under the first amendment. His congressional testimony is insanely cool because he comes across as the most mature person in the entire room.
I remember when this song came out , I was in elementary school, my brother brought his boom box on the bus , and blasted this song. And we all were singing , and jamming. We dedicated the bus performance to our absusive bus driver lol
FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS ‼️ Mmmmmmm I felt that when I was a teen 40 years ago and had AC/DC, Joan Jett, Twisters Sister, Quiet Riots with their epic songs as my heroes. At that time I didn’t know English but I knew that they were shouting to me and trying to wake me up, to shake me up. Was the time when the entire country was behind the rockers who they loved rock music in a Communist Caribbean country where many were put in prison, tortured, harassed badly, intimidated and sent to Mandatory Military Service to foreign countries to kill or be killed. Now that the time has passed I can smile and say to anyone that nobody erased or turned off my dreams for being myself. Good reaction Keep it up
This is the band I listened the most growing up. Such icons, they are true gentlemen ❤ BTW the son is the actor that plays the character of special agent Jubal Valentine on FBI
I'm 63 years, almost 64. I played in bands in the late 70s/early 80s. As others have eluded to this era saw a backlash to rock music by Tipper Gore leading to hearings about explicit music in Congress. Dee was played a major role as one of those who testified before the Congressional committee. Look it up. Another highly intelligent musician who testified was Frank Zappa.
My daughter and I would jam to this song in the car, hahaha!! I love the line at the end, "Drop and give me 20". 😂The 70s band KISS probably started the whole make-up thing. Great rebellion song for the day. I've loved it since it came out around '84.
I think Alice Cooper (Vincent Furnier) was one of the first ones to do the flamboyant stage makeup & antics. Of course, David Bowie & KISS followed later. That was in the 70s, so it's not just an 80s thing. Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, etc, just carried it into the 80s. Actually, removing the makeup was like the great reveal when KISS & Crue did so. We got to see what everyone really looked like. Lol.
At the end of the songs, it has the advertisements of other groups and stuff like that. If you’re looking in the middle row third from the left, you’ll see a guy and it says rock ‘n’ roll versus Congress. That is Dee Snider, the singer for Twisted Sister testifying before Congress about the lyrics and rock ‘n’ roll music and how the lyrics were influencing kids to commit suicide back in the 80s. It’s very interesting to listen to if you have time. Judas Priest and Ozzy were also mentioned because of the lyrics in their songs. Dave Mustain also testified in front of Congress
I don’t know which band member had to have surgery MANY MANY years ago but one of the surgeons in the orthopedic office I go to did the surgery. They have an electric guitar hanging up in the office that is signed and it says, “To a great doctor, from a Twisted Sister!”
That's all Dee Snider's hair and still got it and he's almost 70, for a rock star he is still married to his one and only wife from 1981. Great reaction, thank you. Brings back great memories.
Twisted Sister was such a blast and never took themselves so seriously. They definitely honed into the teenagers of the day! PS...PLEASE, PLEASE react to Snow's "Informer" sometime, I'm sure it will leave you speechless lol :P
You've got to watch the we're not gonna take it video he did to raise money for children with cancer, and awareness regarding money spent on childhood cancer research. Beautiful version of the song. Made me cry.
They had 1 huge album “Stay Hungry”. Every song is great. They were a local Long Island and NYC band for years playing bars and clubs. They started as a cover band and little by little introduced their own songs during sets. Eventually they got signed and this massive album came out. They still play to this day, back to clubs mostly but with a very loyal fan base here. The name and the make up and tattered cloths come from what “my twisted punk rock sister looks and dresses like”. Gotta understand the late 70’s punk scene to get it.
I worked at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was running an event with a corporate sponsor and Dee Snyder was there as a special guest. He was the absolute nicest person you could imagine. His wife was there, as well, and they shared the story of how they met with me. A great memory!
They weren't gender bending. It was more about being as outrageous as possible. Dee Snyder is as masculine as one can get. He was awesome in front of Congress. I love The Price and Stay Hungry
@@MarkMay-cr6bv I'm guessing you didn't grow up in the 70s/80s? This was basically outrageous. Nobody said bad ass ffs. Outrageous as in outside of not normal.
This came out my eighth grade year. Our class took this as our theme song and wreaked havoc from that point forward. On the other channel, consider an episode about the PMRC when Tipper Gore and others went before congress to try to do something about our “vile” music. This eventually ended with that “explicit lyrics” label that everyone strove to get. The congressional testimony by Dee Snider and others is EPIC and shaped the music industry from that point forward.
Of I'm not mistaken this is where the inspiration for the opening to Kickapoo from The Pick Of Destiny came from, Jack Black was heavily inspired by alot of rock bands/artists he grew up listening to❕❗
When my daughter used to get angry, she'd go up to her room and blast this song. And I'd be downstairs thinking, "turn it up!" The costuming for Twisted Sister takes the aesthetic of Glam Rock and blends it with Metal. Androgyny goes back in Rock and Roll to Little Richard. Before Richard, Ma Raney and Bessy Smith were challenging the expectations of womanhood. Then the Beatles started growing their hair. David Bowie presented himself as androgynous and helped launch the Glam Rock genre along with Elton John. In Punk, The New York Dolls strutted around NYC all dolled up and turning heads. It's pretty much become a staple.
Maannnn, I needed to hear this today!!! It totally sent me back to high school days. My brother turned me onto this band and other rock bangers. Thank you for getting me pumped up again.
Believe it or not the band was formed in 1972 in New Jersey. It took them years to gain success and they did it the old fashioned way: toured small clubs until you drop, get up and start all over. They did things their way and refused for a long time to make music to please radio friendly audiences. They paid the price but in the end they got the recognition they deserve. Kiss used to boast that they were the hardest working band in Rock but a case could be made for Twisted Sister as well. They had so much adversity and they never gave up.
The whole beginning scene came right out of the movie Animal House. The father is the actor who played Douglas C. Neidermeyer and in the movie he yells at Dorfman (Flounder) the way he yells at his son.
Many rock and pop stars have Christmas songs (covers of traditional music and/or originals). Believe it or not, Twisted Sister has a Christmas album, and their version of “O Come All Ye Faithful” is great. We all woild love to see some BP reactions to Christmas songs by rock/pop stars.
A little fun trivia: The dad in the video was played by Mark Metcalf, who was best known for playing Douglas Neidermeier in National Lampoon's Animal House. A lot of his lines of dialogue are very much like Neidermeier when he is yelling at Kent "Flounder" Dorfman (played by the late Stephen Furst). Especially when he yells at the kid about a Twisted Sister pin on his uniform, Metcalf is playing Neidermeier all over again! He has been in tons of TV shows, notably as The Maestro on Seinfeld, and The Master on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He also appeared as an authoritarian teacher in "I Wanna Rock" video for Twisted Sister. He did the videos because the band were fans of Animal House. The videos also helped boost his career. If you want to see a funny movie, that sometimes is cringe in today's climate, National Lampoon's Animal House is a lot of fun!!! This song later was used in the jukebox musical Rock of Ages, which was a stage musical and was later made into a movie musical. In the movie version, Catherine Zeta Jones sings this, leading a bunch of mothers against rock music, while at the same time Russell Brand (with 80s pop princess Debbie Gibson, REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin, and Sebastian Bach) sing "We Built This City (On Rock and Roll). The fact that the moms sing "We're Not Gonna Take It" is a jab at the whole Tipper Gore and PMRC thing that was really happening in the 80s. I love irony when it is well played!!! As others have said...watch the video of Dee Snider calmly, rationally, and eruditely flay and decimate the arguments concerning music censorship before Congress. It's a BEAUTIFUL thing to see!!! And if you want to try Rock of Ages, its a lot of fun, too...with a HUGE cast: Tom Cruise (who sings), Julianne Hough, Malin Ackerman, Alec Baldwin, Bryan Cranston, Mary J. Blige, Paul Giamatti, T.J. Miller, and Eli Roth all show up in various roles, some sing (or try to). All of the songs are 80s classics in the pop, rock, hard rock, and metal genres.
OMG. Almost NO ONE dressed like this. I have always died my hair...But that's just because I liked having colors in my hair. Twister Sister was for the kids who wanted to rebel against thier parents but enjoyed suburban life styles.
From Google - The American heavy metal band Twisted Sister got its name from Michael "Valentine" O'Neill, the band's original lead singer. O'Neill came up with the name while calling Jay Jay French from a bar, but he didn't remember doing so the next day. French loved the name and the band adopted it in February 1973
The actor who played the father in this video, was in the Cult Classic Movie called "Animal House". A college comedy starring John Belushi, Donald Sutherland, and Kevin Bacon. The actors name is Mark Metcalf. He played an asshat R.O.T.C. cadet officer. That is basically the same character he played in this video.
I recommend watching the documentary "We Are Twisted Sister", it covers the long road to international success this band went through. No music label wanted to touch them, they were huge in their local New York tri state area for years before they finally broke out in the early 80's.
Dee was our radio station’s morning guy over 20 years ago, and he mentioned the similarities between “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “O Come All Ye Faithful”, and nobody at the station or any of the listeners noticed, surprisingly.
I feel like the today's younger generations are discovering the music of the 80s and 90s, and their style reflects it. Everything old really does seem to become new again. And having been there for the first go-around, I'm enjoying the heck out of the 2nd.
Mark Metcalf, the actor playing the dad in this video, plays the same A-hole type as he did in National Lampoon's Animal House as Doug Neidermeyer. CLASSIC !
Their makeup, etc was for stage appearances, like Kiss with their kabuki makeup, or Alice Cooper with his goth look. Dee Snider and his wife have been married since 1981 and have four kids, and he said he was raised Christian and still identifies as Christian.
Twisted Sister played in a local bar in NY in my hometown in the 70s. We had the best time screaming along with them. Listen to what the dad is saying and compare it to the script from Animal House. He’s using the lines from the “pledge pin” rant.
Dude! I found your channel maybe a month ago. I dont remember what video caught my eye. But, I really like your honest thoughts on 70s and 80s music. Music that bring back my childhood. I saw twisted sister back in the day. It was a concert with LA guns, warrant and poison. Thanks for the memories. And you are a good dude!
Twisted Sister had major struggles getting signed, you should watch a documentary about them. They would sell 10K seat clubs and outperform major acts in the late 70’s. They finally had to go to Europe to get a record deal.
The actor playing the father is Mark Metcalfe from National Lampoon's Animal House, and he is doing almost word for word his ROTC rant from there ("A PLEDGE PIN on your UNIFORM!!!!!") This is a must see movie, by the way.
The idea for the video came from the road runner, coyote cartoon. TS being the road runner, and the dad being the coyote always falling off a cliff, smashing into a wall, or the stuff he got from acme blowing up in his face.
It was the 80's! Club days, hanging out at Hammerheads in West Islip, NY. We had such a great time. Leather pants, boots, jackets and Rock & Roll! Actually, I have been good friends with some of them since I was 15, I'm 61 now. They are nothing like what they look like on stage, they are very normal people.
The actor playing the father is Mark Metcalf. He was best known for his role in a movie called Animal House. This role he is playing in the video is based on the character of the movie not the same character but similar. I think Dee Snider was a big fan of the movie and wanted Metcalf to play this character in the video because Metcalf’s role in the movie was an authoritarian character in it and highly recognizable at the time.
Per google - The name Twisted Sister was created to reflect a specific time in rock music, when the music scene was led by David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Sweet. It was a time of androgynous imagery and sexual confusion. This was in 1973, when the band became pretty popular in the club circuit.
