So I’m noticing a lot of people are upset or annoyed that I’m not completely in love with the song right away. Keep in mind this is my first time hearing this band and this song. This song is so detailed and complicated I’m not going to understand it right away it will take me a while to fully appreciate it. As I listen to more and more Led Zeppelin, I will keep revisiting this song.

Dude, this is one of the greatest rock songs in history! Changing time signatures, changing tempos, great musicianship, great lyrics. It builds up during the entire piece and at the end, drops you down again. And NO autotune. NOTHING today even compares to this. Listen to the album version.
@hughjarrett4736

Led Zeppelin recorded Stairway to Heaven in the studio striving for acoustic perfection, and they achieved that. No live version can hold a candle to the studio version. The solo in the studio version is far better-Page meticulously conceived and interlaced each note into the Am-G-F-G chords that accompany them. That’s what gives the studio solo its power and leaves us in awe, which the live versions don’t. I find the live versions somewhat sloppy, including the solo. The biggest problem with live versions is there’s so much interference. Music played in an arena is imperfect. It’s distorted because of the imperfect environment. The studio version captures the essence of what Stairway to Heaven is supposed to sound like: perfect.

This song is so popular because it’s a journey, slowly progressing from the opening , to the rhythm guitar, to the drums, etc. You gotta appreciate the build up and the more you listen the more you will. As for lyrics even Robert Plant said he doesn’t know what he meant by them. It’s definitely one of the greatest. Check out Kashmir 1979 live by zeppelin

I agree. I also think people who haven't heard it are looking back in time and judging it based on what we are used to hearing now. They can easily forget that it's 50 years old: no auto tune, just absolute raw talent, and not many songs took you on a journey like this half a century ago. I know Rush is always credited for their tempi changes but Zep has so many in such a huge % of their songs. Difference in my opinion is that with Rush you hear when they do it, w Zep it just happens and flows. I do enjoy Rush just fyi so it isn't a criticism. Great honest btw ! If you aren't honest you won't really enjoy going further and discovering how amazing a band they are.

Impatient. They were the first rock band to build a song into a crescendo. Producers did not like the length of the song. Said it wouldn’t get played on the air because of how long it was. Ended up being one of the most played songs ever.

It was bandied about in the late 80’s that this song was the most played rock song in history, being rolled on some radio station or another around the world every 12 minutes. Given the length of the song, that’s nearly continuously.

I'm beginning to think that those who are hearing songs like this are hearing them them from a very different time and place then when they were released. We were a generation who REALLY listened to music, headphones on, candles & dark rooms, smoke in the air etc. It was about the vibe (or "trip" if you like) and not so much about it being fast and even less "can I dance to it"? Unlike now, we didn't have TV's in our bedrooms, we saved up our money to buy the best stereo we could afford, that we took off to college with us, music was our entertainment. Everyone found their own meaning in the lyrics, that's what made it great for them. The composition structure of this song would be lost on someone like you since you have no idea that this had never happened in the rock world before. Talent placed bands like this on the top of the list, true musicians, most bands today would never even record or attempt to play anything like this live, technology has taken over where talent once lived.

I get what you're saying. Music was a big deal for me too, I used to lay on my bed after school with my cd player and listen to my favorite bands after buying their cd at FYE. I have listened to a few Led Zeppelin songs since then, and REALLY like them. I would probably appreciate it all even more had I been born in that era. I am sure these sounds were way ahead of their time. Thank you for your comment!

Don't worry about it, man. We all have our own tastes, and if you're not super into rock then the beginning is just filler for most people. I personally play guitar myself, so I mainly enjoy Page's work. In this version in particular all of the instruments are so on point I find I just enjoy how each of them work to build the atmosphere. And that atmosphere shifts so gradually you hardly notice when you end up in a different part of the song entirely. And then that solo... Oh BOY that solo brother. I don't know where the hell Jimmy Page was while he was banging that out, but he won the day there. Top that off with the full vocal range of Robert Plant, John Paul Jones prowess on everything else they needed, powered by John Bonham's extra thiccc beats and tasty rhythm, and you're got yourself something that blew everyone's mind when it first came out, and still does today. That's at least why I think it's such an icon of music.

I hope this is more of what you're talking about, but if you like energy, a great classic rock band to check out is Boston. The songs I think have the best kind of energy are Peace of Mind and Foreplay/Longtime. That second one is two separate songs put together, first an instrumental and then Longtime which I'm willing to bet at least gets your toes tapping.

Yup, that's how it used to work with more complex songs for me. It comes back after hours, days or even weeks. Especially with longer songs, you have to be in right mood for it. Sometimes I like faster all out music, or something really simple (human music), sometimes I want a 10 minute journey like Metallica's Orion (check that if you have no idea what im talking about). For example I've listened to The Tool for the first time when I was 13 and I appreciated it, but not enough to keep listening to it. What a horrible mistake :D Check Wintersun or Buckethead if you wish to live through more guitar based journeys.

That’s a very debatable claim. Depends a lot on genre as well. But that claim has been put out for guitarists as diverse as Prince, Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eddie Van Halen, Ingve Maelsteen (sp?), Randy Rhoads, and so on. Hell, Nancy Wilson of Heart is one hell of a guitarist and I believe Page himself would say so. Credit to Page, but he is in good company.

I would suggest listening to Heart perform this song live at the Kennedy Center. Was an honors event for Led Zeppelin with the surviving member in attendance. Heart is an amazing rock band in their own right with close ties to LZ both professionally and personally. Plant doesn’t like covers if this song, be he and everyone else gave Ann and Nancy Wilson, et al., a standing ovation. The son of John Bonham, the late LZ drummer, surprised them by performing the drum portion for this performance.

First off... all RU-vid reactors should always do studio version first. The main reason being... that's how we heard it for the first time. Secondly, a lot of '70s bands used multi-tracking to create amazing songs... live performances cannot reproduce that. Live performances bring their own sense of awe. Zeppelin used multi-tracking heavily! Good live bands.... Floyd Grand Funk Railroad Eagles ELO Elton John America Bob Seger AC/DC Grateful Dead Jethro Tull Lynyrd Skynyrd .... quite a few more but in my opinion those above sound as good as studio... if not better. This is one of the greatest songs ever written. Doesn't matter if your first second third fourth fifth or whatever it doesn't matter how many times you heard it. Yes it does start off slow and transitions intuitive builds up and build up. It's the only song that actually does that throughout all their songs. Like you said there is a story to it. It builds up and builds up according to the story. Jimmy Page lead guitar the best guitarist in the world. He actually is. John Paul Jones quiet but powerful on the base. And of course the legendary rest in peace John Bonham on the drums. His power Thunderdrum in the base is just phenomenal. When they play they played differently according to what most musicians play on the Note side. John Bonham the drummer and Jimmy take the guitarist they play offset on the keys. Door offset from one another but you don't hear it because they do it in such a way that it actually combined together and sounds good. They don't fade standard what musicians play that's what sets them apart from everybody else and that's why other music and this one here so hard to play five people because of how they do it. And nobody else can do that powerful vocals by Robert Plant they're just phenomenal. Actually listed as the number one biggest rock band ever. Another people while they have their own opinions but that still does not put them down for being first place in rock and roll cuz when you have a whole industry that recognizes that that's what counts. They see it. And there is more to music than just straight fast going out of from head to toe. How what was masterfully crafted to let it build up and build up and play along the way until Jimmy Page explodes on it and John Bonham. Rest in peace. Don't know if it's still there is but used to be the number one most requested song ever had that was up in the 90 s the last time I knew. I haven't checked up on that since. Saying that about them for what you did but that's like saying oh I only Prefer Blondes or I only prefer brunettes. Or redheads. Nothing in between. Basing a song hi how fast they playing how hard like I said it's like picking a woman that only has blond hair at a certain length or redhead. Sorry but that to me that's kind of shallow. Thursday but when men pick women that way based on their hair color how long it is or how short it is or whatever that's being very shallow. And picking songs because of that is the same way. You have the right to listen to what you want and have it to where you want it. That's why everybody likes what they like. I'm just throwing in my opinion.

Yeah went into what’s considered the best rock song of all time in an entirely wrong mind set. That’s a musical piece. Anytime the words number one are associated with what your about to listen to. Close your eyes, and take it in almost like a classical music piece.

Love the videos mate This particular version of stairway to heaven I'd walk around my highschool trying to mime Jimmy's fretting hand on my arm because I thought it would help me play like him It did but not how I thought Jimmy captured my soul with this love solo Then a year after highschool I started trying to sing like Bruce Dickinson I got pretty good at it until I had to learn into singing like Robert plant Being a musician is fucking fun

Hey, I respect your honest opinion! I am speaking from a first person perspective because I grew up in the midst of the process of Led Zeppelins fame ! So, my feelings toward the song has nostalgia in it for me personally! Damn near every song they put out seemed agreed upon the radio station s. So,in short that solo performance by Jimmy Page was extended of the cuff . Not a studio recording of the song .

SALVO.... it was written in 1970.... it was and still is the ballad of all prom nights .... ITS A FREAKING BALLAD SALVO, be patient lol !! Zepp changes course as you very well know !!!! They sped it up halfway through which makes it extremely tough on the young ones getting close to their mates during this dance at the halfway mark but you gotta stick with the original pace of the ballad .... so much better that way !!!! This was abd still is a Zeppelin classic with one of the most iconic guitar solos ever played .... you love Zep ..enjoy the perplexity of it all lol :))))

No flute, on studio recording Jones is playing 3 recorders on the introduction, In live shows, Jones covered his bass and flute parts using a Mellotron.

Zeppelin is the kind of band that you ought to review the studio album version first, since they absolutely embellish and never play their catalogue the same way live...ever. As a point of reference when you do listen to the live versions (some of which are famous in their own right, like this one - "Does anyone remember ... laughter?"). But the power of the high note vocal crescendo's at the end being hit on the studio version are a must listen. He often lowered a lot of his highest notes live b/c they are so hard to duplicate, esp as his voice changed over the years for many reasons (age, accidents, overuse, etc). Also, Jimmy's solos are always cleaner on the studio versions. He tends to ramble and add some raw sloppiness (in a good, creative way but ramble nonetheless) when playing live. Most all of their songs are just too complex to duplicate on stage even if they wanted to clone the studio version. I think Zep is the GOAT, but someone listening for the first time really needs to hear the version that made them famous in the first place, which then enabled them to tour and play all the modified versions.

Are you crazy? This is one of the top 5 greatest rock songs in history, totally iconic. Sometimes it's just how you listen to it. For me Queen Bohemian Rhapsody is the greatest, but you have to either listen to the official video version which is the best or the Live Aid 1985 version which some people call the greatest rock concert performance in history. You were right to listen to Chicago - 07/21/70 - Tanglewood first before the studio versions and if you ever listen to Black Sabbath War Pigs, I beg you, plead with you, please the best version by far is Black Sabbath - "War Pigs" - Live in Paris 1970 version. But back to Led Zeppelin, listen to the studio version of Stairway to Heaven. It will almost be like a spiritual experience for you. 😎

After seeing your reaction to the studio version last night I had to laugh at your reaction here. This is far from the best depiction of the song. I wouldn't be surprised if Robert was high, he was known to have drug problems.

I am laughing my head off Robert Plant and Jimmy Page not all that good not only is the lead singer and the guitarist insanely talented, just listen to the bassist and drummer. If you ask any famous musician they will tell you that they are one of the best bands in the history of rock music. Thank for sharing this but all I can say to each his own. One more thing there is a riff in this song that is so sacred if you go into guitar center to try out a guitar and play that riff, they will tell you to stop playing it immediately.
