First to Break- The Adam Schefter Problem

Adam Schefter is the most widely recognized name in NFL reporting, famous for his ability to break massive stories before his peers are able to catch up. But while Schefter has garnered a massive platform and lucrative contract with ESPN, that doesn't mean there aren't massive blind spots within his work, and that has never been clearer than over the past year.

You just told a great story about the best known insider able to control narratives but expect the levers that work the engine to stifle that power? If anything his influence will only keep growing. ESPN has become just as much part of the problem as Schefter is. When the news about Shefter and the WFT leaks happened, I remember Dan LeBatard discussing it, as well as the former president of ESPN’s (who is also the current president of his own company now) previous decision-making has helped the nature of what ESPN is now (a mouthpiece for its partners over an independent sports news organization).

As a packers fan, I am a bit too familiar with him than I would like to be, and it gives me great joy to see him being called on his bs. It also gives me a bit of cause for concern that ESPN is tolerating his behavior, which sets a bit of a dangerous precedent for the future of sports journalism moving forward. While ESPN may not be a financially viable platform long-term, the future generations of sports media personalities and informants must learn from the mistakes they have made if we truly want to maintain journalistic integrity.

He's quick to apologize when he's called out, but only when there's a public relations issue involved, since admitting that you were wrong to do something affects your credibility as well. To me Adam essentially is wanting to protect the league at all costs instead of being an unbiased journalist. The entire landscape of journalism worldwide has been tarnished so much in the past few years that many don't respect the trade and Adam shows how so many sports have tried to become the modern day TMZ to break news first and such. I understand wanting to be the first to a story and journalism school teaches many that not only if it bleeds it reads but getting a story out first matters so much. He's to me a guy who reminds me of a person like Jen Pshaki with the kind of heat that his actions has brought himself. The NFL has struggled so much with conduct for their players to owners while hoping his like Adam can make noise in other spots to get people not to notice the real issues. Its another reason why so many don't respect sports anymore because of the soulless nonsense we've seen from players to breaking stories without merit. Adam has done so many bad things yet he's given more passes than so many and I don't understand why however let's not forget the NFL is in the entertainment business not essentially sports at first so guys like Adam is a showman first then journalist. But again another reason why so many have walked away from sports as fans and such. I would like to see Adam to have to eat his words but also I think again it shows how low the NFL has gotten in the past few years. Its sad but again this is the NFL and ESPN (Disney owned) so what credible or respected views do they really have in the first place?

8:52 I will forever hate what Schefter and the Colts fans in the crowd that day did to Andrew. Never deserved to be sent off like that.
@juliewillson3378
@juliewillson3378 2 года назад
I don’t think Colts fans would have reacted so poorly if Andrew had been allowed to control the narrative from the beginning. Many of us understood why he was retiring, but Schefter breaking the news before the Colts scheduled a news conference shocked everyone. I also think Irsay and Ballard hoped the could talk him out of it. Fans booing sealed the deal.

No reporter should EVER say “a lack of indictment doesn’t mean innocence” That is editorializing. An accusation already Carries weight with a lot of people. False accusations are virtually impossible to escape. We don’t need a “we don’t know it isn’t true”. People lie all the time. Don’t talk about what “we don’t know” Stick to what you actually know.

The thing that makes me the most frustrated is there's never any correction. People still use the Rodgers Draft Day news against him in arguments, even thought it was proven to be made up by Shifty.

He's the type of guy to just keep going regardless of the what he's told or asked. He said it himself, it's an addiction. He HAS to be the first one to break the story and doesnt care who it hurts or how it's received. In his mind it's all about him cause he's been rewarded for doing so. The way he broke the Brady retirement news that forced him to "fake" retire as well as the Haskin's tragedy was just insane.

Yeah, once he mentioned how much of a failure Haskins was DURING A TWEET REPORTING HE FUCKING DIED, I gave up. Dude has always been slimy but JESUS.

He should have also mentioned how much of a failure he was at not walking into a highway and getting hit by a truck, something which is pretty darn easy to avoid, especially when you're a millionaire.

I agree Schefter is incredibly wreckless & unprofessional, but it's equally as wreckless to start with with an assumption of guilt in the Deshaun Watson situation. He doesn't need to be exonerated, because an individual is innocent until proven guilty. The entire framing around the criminal justice system sucks & it's a far bigger problem than anything a D-bag like Schefter can do. I don't particularly like Deshaun Watson, Schefter, or ESPN, but I don't like the perception of needing to be proven innocent, or "exonerated", wayyy more. Smh.

Woj is somewhat the same way when it comes to the NBA. He’s so hell bent on being the first to drop his “Woj bombs”. A good example is the Lakers firing of Frank Vogel. With how the lakers season went, there was a good chance the lakers would be moving on from Vogel in the offseason. Going on a more than likely to happen outcome, Woj capitalized on that probability to be the first one to report it even if it hasn’t yet been decided. The reason he does that is because if he’s right, a Woj bomb dropped of a coach firing before a game is even concluded is celebrated as exceptional reporting. He’s never called out for a take that is incorrect. Nobody ever remembers that Woj actually reported Kawhi choosing the Lakers right before surprising everyone by signing with the Clippers later the same day. Correct takes equals brilliance, wrong takes equals 🤷🏽‍♂️ on to the next take.. That’s sports journalism for you.
