our MERCH www.vanwives.com First Week Living at Cabin in the Woods Alone | omaze.com/Vanwives for your chance to win a Mercedes-Benz 4x4 Sprinter van and support a great cause enter at omaze.com/Vanwives
We’ve moved to a cabin alone in the woods and this is our first full week in the woods living off grid in the wilderness. It’s a simple way of living! As we tame the land, do cabin renovations, and find ways to become more resourceful we are loving van life and living in the van out here. It’s our first week at the cabin but that’s not stopping us- We want to make our tiny home as self sustaining as possible- this week we get back to building and build a rain water collection system and we’re learning new things about living off grid and cabin life in Canada everyday.

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

careful ladies !!! water is HEAVY !!!! 1 kilogram per liter (kg/L) and or US measures, one gallon of water weighs 8.345 pounds . Your deck is maxed out w. one tank !!! its always best to set them on the ground !! have Richie flatten out the area behind/ next to the new deck and set the tank straight on fresh gravel .... heck do 2 or 3 tanks so you dont have to redo it all again !! Because of freezing weather in Winter I was thinking it would be best to either put them in the ground far enough to avoid freezing or blanket them and add a heater.

@@greatpix - I don't know how it would actualy work, but where I'm from (Long Island, NY), the frost line (meaning how far beneath surface earth that you engage the inner warmth of the earth, at about 55F, or so, is about 18 or 36 inches down, depending on who you talk to, and of course, Nova Scotia, as further north, would require the greater depth, at least. I don't know what the metal cage of their tanks are made of, but if they are not stainless steel, I would be reluctant to bury them even half way. I don't know how their home is oriented, but I somehow suppose the water tanks are on the more westerly wall. If so, not an advantage. It's all an experiment, and they have the guts to do so, rare enough.

Old retired architect here...really like following your exploits and progress toward your shared goals. I am also a huge appreciator of the way you are loving toward each other. Good on ya! Thought: I think I noticed you placing one of your precast footings on cut grass up against the building. The grass and it's root system will largely ruin the bearing capacity of the footings as they will sink into the "duff" and become uneven or cracked even under your crusher fines. A base of some sort (as Joe K. mentioned for your road surface) will improve the bearing (load carrying ability) of your structures. Keep up the hard work of progress. It sure is easier with the smiles on your faces.
@dobiebloke9311
@dobiebloke9311 3 года назад
**Mike* Sandiland - My dad, also an Architect, but still dead, would agree with you. He would have me dig at least a foot, if not a bit more down, fillled with gravel or stone of what ever, compress it, even by foot, and then place the supports for the structure. Just as you implied, less wiggle room to mess things up. As to road surfaces, my old man once lived in a place (a planned on, between place) that had a muddy driveway. Every time we went to the beach, which was often, just as he had as a kid, he brought home a five gallon bucket full of shells. He cleaned out our neighbors coal burning furnace for free, to reep the ashes. Between shell and ash, in about a year, that driveway was mud free, about as alphalt would be, only better, costing nothing more than a little effort, of flying a kite on the beach, as gathered. The ash had no kite to it, but we did form a human chain of it, so it was nearly effortless. Many hands, light work.

When you are ready to gravel your private drive, this is what needs to be done. Base layer needs to be rock in the 3-4 inch size, about 12 inches in depth. Yes it will be a bit to drive over, however, you want that size rock in first to push down into the soft dirt. THEN use smaller clinker size rock (you’r call in gravel) to add on top of that. Its the small gravel size rock that will settle in and create a good drive surface that will last. If you only place small gravel it will just keep sinking deeper and deeper as you drive over it. Have done many a cabin entrance road this way AND they last :-) . Good luck !!!

If they’re sugar ants, you can get a slow-acting gel that they carry back to the nest in the walls. Something like Advion Ant Gel. You put a clump of it in different areas along the bottom of the wall. Once you figure out which area they congregate toward, put more down there and give it a couple days. If they’re regular or large ants, definitely call an exterminator.

Awsome job, and video! (As always) One hopefully helpful observation. This is a common patio construction error. All of the weight of those two VERY HEAVY water tanks will be sitting on the deck screws into the 4x4's only. Larger verticle supports would typically be used with notches cut for the joists to sit on. In your case, adding some 2x6 or 2x8 between the pyramid blocks and the bottom of the joists will support the load much better. No judgement and easy to add after the fact! I would hate to see it start to pull or break those screws once that weight is on them! See you next week.👍
@Vanwives
@Vanwives 3 года назад
Thank you for leaving a comment on this. Going to look into it- Jazmyn mentioned adding joists near the blocks. What do you think about the stringers?
@warrenatwood832
@warrenatwood832 3 года назад
@@Vanwives Hi again. If you put two 2x8 fastened to the 4x4's, up against the bottom of the joists, one towards the inside of the deck along the house side legs and one against the outside set of legs, you will create beams that the deck is sitting on. These need the vertical piece from the bottom of each beam to the top of each pyramid stone. All weight would be carried by the beams and blocks under directly to the ground. Maybe consider doubling the beams, ( two 2x8's on each side). If so, make sure the blocks support both beams fully. I think those tanks hold 330 gallons each.That plus the steel cage and the weight of the deck itself and I think you're approaching 2 1\2 tons. That's the weight of a couple small cars! Good luck!
@dartmoordave
@dartmoordave 3 года назад
@@Vanwives Try and get the tanks up as high as, gravity means no pump., too heavy for patio. If you ever have someone come by with a dozer for your firebreaks, get them to push up a big stand of earth to sit the tanks on.

Seeing one of the dogs crawling under the house made me think of posting this. ----- A tip for dog owners who have dogs that don't like thunder or fireworks. If you have a laundry room with a dryer put your dog in there with the dryer set to 'Air' for as long as it can go. The noise covers up the thunder/fireworks and the dog will fall asleep. If you don't have a dryer then try playing white or pink noise through a speaker in the quietest area of the house. You can either get an app that generates the sound or play YT videos that feature it. It's not a good idea to have the dog outside roaming free during a thunderstorm or fireworks as they can get frightened and run off in a panic and get hurt or lost.

Those water tanks look like over 300 gallons each, at 8.3 lbs/gallon, they will weigh over 5,000 lbs plus the wood. You will be putting about 1,000 lbs on each post. I think that will lean and crash. I would put another post on the center of each joist.

A quick tip, based on experience... Do not add wood chips or mulch on top of the ground cloth. Weeds and grass will seed in the mulch or wood chips. Your best option is to cover with gravel.

Get a Berkey water filter and you can drink that water all day, and night too. Be sure to wrap the tanks in black plastic or spray paint them, and if you can get one a bit higher, you can use gravity to feed your house.

Look at you power girls go!!! Jazz said it best when she said Crystal makes those tools look good! LOL.. Bosch hooked you up! I loved everything about this, the energy, the laughs and the progress. Jazmyn - buy Crystal a 4x4 truck. Trust me on this one.... LOL!! "I love the truck". When you were dumping - I was saying - wait, save the cabinet for the shed, then.. whoa - she smashed a beer fridge.. But that's the repurpose everything me. Love the rain system - plus the Tyler and Todd Dashing Duo... Shout Out! So much fun to see you work on things and be goofy good to one another. Love the dogs barking at the wheel barrow. My girls hated the vacuum cleaner. Great vid this week . Question. I sent PM, but wondering if you have an affiliate link with SkillShare? If so, I'm considering using it for some courses and would love for you to get the benefit. See you next week!! Paws Up!

I thought the same when Crystal smashed up the gas fridge. I’m sure we have that same ancient fridge at our cabin, it’s a backup for when friends turn up. I would probably come home from the dump with more stuff than I took there! Loving the enthusiasm, keep those coffee fuel ups coming!

Just an observation, but I suspect the shed you cleaned out and stored your equipment in was intended 100% for firewood. If you intend to say in the cabin during the winter, you are going to need to fill that shed several times over with firewood. Also, when you first arrived you found the front porch stacked with firewood. One reason the front porch has a large overhang is for more dry storage of firewood and for easy access at night and in bad weather. Very common practice when living off grid. Best of luck and stay safe.

That yellow breaker/crow bar (6:25) is THE best designed tool like that I have ever owned. Get two, you can "walk" the two to pry apart serious wood. I have torn apart tons of buildings/barns/wood with those. Get a few extra while they are available.
