I love this. This is basically what I did with Rocco, but it took a lot longer because Rocco was absolutely terrified of hands. Well. He was kinda absolutely terrified of everything. He wanted to be *near* people but it took so long for him to work up the courage to come closer at all on his own. It’s taken over a year but we’re working on staying on my fingers with stepping up now! He’s easy to train now that he’s not nearly as scared of hands as he was. He’s a super food motivated little guy!
This brings some joy to my heart.❤ I lost my quaker Fiji of 11 years last year. Her absence is still felt. She wanted to hang out with me on my shoulder all day. That was where she was happiest. It makes me happy to see birds getting rescued and treated well. Thank you for taking the time to work with this sweet baby and walking us through what you did to make him feel safe in his new home.
I love how you read the comfort level of the bird and let the bird decide when to move forward with training. Your respect for birds makes me so happy.
I've been working with a bonded pair of 15 year old Quakers. They have a small vocabulary but haven't been trained for handling. They are growing out clipped feathers and have some flight capability. Finding high value treats for training gets interesting. First worked in leather gloves for aggression issues but I can now hand them treats. Bambi has stepped up. Logan surprised me yesterday by allowing me to lay on the floor with him. This video was great. Wish they liked sweet potato though 😂
I adopted a Quaker a few years ago that had been badly abused and was being stored in an unheated room and it was -40°C outside. I told the owner to either give me the birds or I would call the police. He had tons of baggage. But he no longer bites me to the bone. He loves me and we have whispered conversations. He is not food motivated. He plays with one toy, 3 baby rings tied to the bars. He will jiggle them for hours. He will sit on my shoulder and purr. He finally let me scritch his head. But I would not trade him for anyone. I have taught all my birds to go to the perch on their door for treats and to go in or out of the cage. He negotiated a change to me, going to a perch inside his cage that does not move when I close the door. So now he’s on the door perch then jumps to the other perch before I open the door. Sometimes he stays on the door perch and I ask him if he wants to go to the inside perch and he hops there. It’s a slow process.
Would love to have a video about how you calculate how much treats and pellets to give thruout the day. How to avoid getting a too fat of a bird! Love your content!
I really enjoy the footage of Toto exploring and just being his birdy self - it's not boring at all! I also like how you explain and teach. Your videos are excellent! Thank you!
It's so interesting because when I have had new birds, they have been the same species and have also been fairly brave. So when I adopted my new rescue lovebird, Guava, about 7 months ago, she did a lot of watching my other lovebirds interact with me and eventually, by day 3, I had her on my arm with a sweater on because the other two showed her that I wasn't something to fear and I reinforced that anytime she was on me or interacting with me. I don't believe she has been treated well in her life at all, she has a pretty strong aversion to hands and continues to bite for seemingly no reason other than to bite you, but the rescue I got her from said that they believe she bit her previous owner and they threw her out the window, she was eventually found in an alleyway. From then on it didn't get better, because she was probably not very nicely handled when they clipped her wings and I don't really agree with how the main person at this side of the rescue handled her, also forcefully grabbing her and kissing her. I know they had good intentions, but not much sense in handling a bird. So obviously, as you can imagine, she was pretty badly traumatized by hands! It continues to be something we are working through, but she will come when she is called, she caught on what 'bed time' is and that all birds get yummy treats when going into the cage for the night, which has made her very happily go into her cage. Sometimes she needs a little extra something, maybe some treats in the hand and then placing her in her respective cage for the night, but nonetheless, she's a pretty happy girl. I've let her feathers grow out as I don't believe in clipping, I think it is a very outdated practice and that only benefits the handler for their unintentionally at times selfish reasons, but she is an incredible flyer! She will also choose to interact with me, but still bites exposed skin which I'm having a hard time getting her to get her to redirect her attention and nibble on toys or anything else instead of very hurtfully biting me. Haven't been successful yet, so if you have any tips, let me know! I am so glad that it is seemingly going well for Toto and the rest of you! So very exciting in a short amount of time that he has grown to choose you and your wife to hang out with and feeling like his boundaries are being respected. I really, really hope it continues to go well and that he does amazing! I hope you post more update videos on him and what you have continued to work on with him or new things you are working on with him!
Isn't that first demonstration of trust just the best, most magical feeling in the world! Toto is lovely and it's been great to watch your first few days together. I remember following all your advice when Sophie first got here and I spent so much time carefully softly creeping about, but then she got fed up and just flew over and fell asleep in my neck/shoulder joint and basically just lived there ever since 😂
Love your channel so much. In my opinion, you are far and away the most knowledgeable and ego-less birdie RU-vidr. Really appreciate your posts and the excellent video of your birds. You really work in symbiosis with your feathered family. :)
That was a very informative video. Thank you for presenting it in a 20 minute video rather than breaking it down into tiny "shorts." Also, thank you for not putting it behind a paywall. On the plate at the 10:11 mark was that a popped kernel of popcorn?
Ohhh thank you so much for this - I recently got a new bird to the family (aviary bird, in a rescue home for 3 years before I brought her home) and she's utterly petrified of people. I'll be following this with her and see how it goes!
It will go differently and take different amounts of time for every bird, so be super patient! I took in a rescue green cheek a little over a year ago and we’re just now working on stepping up, since hand desensitization took so long for him.
What a good, brave boy Toto is, bless him! I'm currently just starting my second month as a new quaker owner, and even though mine was hand reared really well, I'm finding this video so useful for helping me know how to help build a bond with him, thanks so much, and good luck with Toto moving forward, I'm looking forward to seeing his progress x
awww Toto is such a cutie! he looks like he's in good health, and his attitude suggests that he wasn't -abused-, even if he was a bit neglected. your training is progressing REALLY well for the first week+ ! i hope it goes as well when he gets to meet the Noodle xD can't wait to see more of him!
As an interesting coincidence. I've recently been fostering a rescue quaker, I severely underestimated how loud their voices can be. Finding him an adoptive home may be a challenge. Thank you for taking this bird in, he deserves a good home. :)
In the place I'm living right now they don't allow birds and I'm DYING because I love them so much and I've done so much research and UUUGHG but I still love your videos😊
I find working normally but non-fear-evokingly around the bird on day one really takes the fear away so you don't see it in the second day, but then again I usually get to some of your day 2 things around 'dinner' of day one as well. But!! I am on the spectrum and we pick up on the suble cues of birds really well; I wouldn't make a video telling the whole world to do as much as I do on day one, as it takes a lot of courage and confidence building while reading suble cues and avoiding too much fear. Great video!!
I just got a parrotlet 2 weeks ago, he’s super scared, and everytime we get close and make improvements he tends to go back to square 1 I try not to push his boundaries and stop giving him treats when he seems to be uninterested but then the next day it’s like he doesn’t know me anymore I don’t know what to do
Hey Congratulations on the amazing new addition to the family! Question: I see you didn't do this, but does it not help if you already have a friendly pet bird, then let the new bird see you two interact together and this maybe alleviates their fear sooner, and thus cuts the time needed for them to feel safe around you? Suggestion/Request: Is it possible for you to create a tutorial for bird to respond by saying something when their name (or a particular word) is called? It often happens that Mango would fly out of sight into another room, and when I'm calling him he'd just silently look at me looking for him (probably thinks its funny lol).
New birds need to be quarantine for 30 days prior to being anywhere that airborne pathogens could transmit so it’s simply not possible for the first while! It can absolutely be a help after quarantine though. You can, you could just work more at recall so they can be recalled from out of sight locations. I’ll look in to maybe making a contact call video though
I use a mixture of a Totally Organics Pellets, Harrison’s hot pepper high potency, and caitec oven fresh bites in size small and medium. All of them can be found on feathered addictions or mysafebirdstore which ship to the US
How do you know if toto gets along with other birds and would warm up to newt or not? is this something you just have to take the risk with and then prepare for the fact that they may end up hating each other?
I chose toto specifically because he used to live with a conure which he got along with extremely well. I wanted to select a bird that would have the highest odds of being able to cooperate with Newt and end up socializing. However that’s never a guarantee that they will end up liking each-other as every bird will have a unique personality that may not mesh well with another individual. So we do always need to have a plan B in case they need to be housed separately long term.
@@FlockTalk ah right this makes sense thanks for replying so quick. another question if you dont mind, my green cheek starts getting nippy and a little aggressive when he gets excited, so when i come home hell be excited to see me and start nipping. to counter this i just let him calm down first before i take him out the cage and that does the job, but when it comes to training sessions, he gets very eager and excited and when im not quick enough, he starts biting. is there a way to prevent this?
Newt was the same way, I’d take the time to focus on reinforcing calm behaviours for a while. Teaching them how to take treats calmly and ensuring to end a training session the second you see that overstimulated brain show up. Keep training sessions shorter so as to not build too much excitement at once. And ensure you’re starting your session on a calm note, with the bird waiting patiently not stretching, pacing, or otherwise desperately trying to acquire a reward.
@@FlockTalk thank you so much. The advice you give in your videos is so specific and unique. I spent ages trying to harness train my bird and watched countless tutorials and only after you released yours did I finally start getting somewhere. I really appreciate what you do and your genuine love and care
Hello. I and the fellow that spoke text with you yesterday about two-month-old parallette Pacific parrotlet I got that woman in the store who's not the breeder that got the four patches patch birds from another breeder. Since I requested I wanted a male Pacific parrotlet he said I know another breeder has 42 months old Birds wall 2 months old and they're eating turkey right now. So I went up there he wasn't there the woman said they're all males with I said they don't look like males I don't have to Blue on the rumps and ordering their flight feathers and I don't see the blue line by there I she said that's because they're so young don't eat two months old and colors are growing as they get older 4 months old so on so I just picked one out thinking that I didn't know any better about that my parents that I had talked to years ago and 44 years he was a man when he had all the markings I just mentioned above but he was about 5 months old when I got him from a breeder also a different breeder anyways long story short after I spoke with you about Richard made perfect sense when you said the readers would know as soon as the feathers pop out of the PIN pin feathers you could tell the colors of their feathers a breeder can tell how many males they have and how many females they have in that particular hatching with that beer breeding birds so I called up the store and said that the man going to be there tomorrow she said no the breeder she said she will ice I'm bringing his bird back it's a female I've looked at pictures online and I talked to a couple people better very knowledgeable about Paris and Powerless as well. And I feel that there's no question this bird is a female or otherwise there should have had mail markings on it already. I'm coming up so it's only 10 minutes away today fortunately the three that would last one wasn't mail I would looked at it and it has a royal blue rump and the lower part of its back door royal blue almost purple and royal blue and has Royal Blue flight feathers in its wings and it has the streak of teal blue colored nearest eyes so that I was confident enough there's no question that's a man looks a lot like my parrot. So didn't even exchange and out the door I went in my bird is home and he's actually tell is covering his page as I speak. So I wanted to thank you very much for your pointers and for communicating with me on the spur of the moment is thank you. Fred. I've been watching your video on this I guess you found this parrot lime green and white which species is he? As usual your videos are always educational and insightful and enjoyable to watch.
