I took home a parrotlet today, whom I met last week. He's two years old and his previous owner accidentally stepped on him and couldn't bring themselves to continue caring for him. The first thing he did when I picked him up was fly on my shoulder and hide in my hair. Why are they so adorable?

@@connie2285 I've almost accidentally sat on my bird at least twice now. They're very small birds, and I can definitely see how someone could accidentally step on a bird if the bird was on the ground and the person wasn't aware/watching where they're walking. Although that doesn't really explain how they'd wanna give them up after that.

Ya it can happen. My dad accidentally stepped on my baby bird when i was young. Nd when i came home from school. She wasnt there to greet me. (Usually she fly towards me). My moms eyes were all puffy and red. I asked why. She told me that my baby bird died. I didn't believe it. But she was laying in her cage frozen. I cried so hard. And i never leave my bird around my dad anymore. Coz if you leave your birds around careless people they'll accidentally step on them. And in most cases birds will die coz they are really fargile.

Could you do a video on what steps you should take for first getting a bird (like the first day home)? Setting up their cage, how long you should leave them alone before you start trying to work with them, how to minimize stress, etc. Thanks! (sorry if you already have a video on this but I haven't seen one yet)

Mackenzie Robinson I know I’m a bit late, but I can tell you one thing. Make sure you set up their cage and are comfortable with it BEFORE you bring them home. Even get food and water ready before you put them in the cage. They need at least a few days to adjust to their new environment, no cage set up.

I work at one and I can definitely tell you they’ve only trained and taught me very little about their care and how to handle them for customers. I wouldn’t blame the associates, just the stupid companies. People really need to be responsible themselves and do their research as well if they truly want one and can’t just rely on one person from a stupid store, but some of us also try our best to learn on our own time. It’s a sensitive debacle but they need effort from all ends. It’s the crazies that just want something cute and don’t care to think about what they’re doing and then they get mad at us for something they should’ve thought about. We get idiots that scream at us because their two male bettas killed each other. That’s what pisses me off.

I make several perches and play areas for my birds from large, broken branches I find. I soak them in salted water for two days and then let them dry out in the sun, sand the really rough areas and bark off and rinse it again. It keeps my birds happy and I replace them every few weeks so it keeps it new. Recently I started to make some holes in the branches to hide food and treats. They love picking through them, especially with new perches and don't worry, the holes aren't small, they're large enough to prevent my their toes getting stuck in them ^^

I was feeling guilty that my parrotlet was solo in her cage. I assumed they desired a flock of some sort and I was considering getting another to have them together in the same cage. Glad I did some homework and came across this and learned that they are good alone as long as they get out of the cage time and in cage stimulation, which my birdie does. I really avoided a bad situation, thanks 🙏!!

I cut up the old cage to get her out. I love that you have made a video specific to Parrotlets! These birds are truly under-rated in the bird kingdom. They are fun, energetic and a delight to have. And my Male (separate cage) talks. Our house has a mix of birds but Parrotlets really hold a special place in our hearts.

Also be with him a lot so he does not spend a lot of time in his cage and supervise him we you give him or her a new to to see if it safe for him

I was in my yard when a stray dog (had to be a 50-70 lb dog) came onto our driveway. Buddy, my chi, charged and launched himself into this dog's side, barking like crazy. It scared this bigger dog, luckily it ran off and buddy came running to me instead of being attacked.

Julianna Smith I have had 4 birds of different species that i have been taking care of for two years and I can help you. You should DEFINITELY change its diet. You can try online articles but here is a short sum of what i have learned. First of all, try to give some fruit. It's sweet and it could help your bird transition to eating healthier in a smooth way and it could help your bird understand that you're trying to give it a new type of food. Now for the vegetables. You can spray seeds or the birds favorite kind of food or fruit juice all over it. When they eat the seeds they'll taste the vegetables. You can also try to chop the food into different shapes or sizes. Try variety. Also, you can present the new foods in different ways, such as putting it in the food bowl, hanging it in the cage, on a clip inside the cage... ect. Good luck!!!!

I saw this video a few weeks ago and I thought it was super helpful. Unfortunately my parrolet just passed away. Since last night she was fluffed out and was shaking. And today she was sleeping all day. I don’t know what could’ve went wrong. It was my first time owning a parrolet and she was barely 3 months old. She was also barely learning to fly and had crashed several times. I don’t know if that might have caused her death? Any advice on what I should with her body? Please

Was your baby bird eating and drinking normally? Some breeders sell them far too young . For me to allow my babies to go they must be fully independent and I still keep them in a separate cage from their parents for a few weeks just to make sure. Plus baby parrotlets are an absolute joy to watch hatch and grow into such a cute , sassy bird , I just don’t wanna let them go.

Thank you for this very helpful video. You're a great person for wanting to help people with birds because so many just end up in shelters because the person has no idea what they're doing. Im planning on once my two budgies have passed on which i would never want to happen on getting either a parrotlet or a cockatiel. So thank you so much because this really helped me.

@tubstnk
@tubstnk 7 лет назад
Bailey Snyder Give it time. Try hand feeding them, don't pick them up if they keep running away from you, DONT CHASE THEM. You can ruin your relationship with them. You can start by talking to your birds, then put your hand at the opening of the cage, leave it there for like 20 minutes. Take it out, do the same tomorrow while holding millet or treats. Eventually they will know you are not a threat.

Budgies are very social birds, it is best if you get them a friend to hang out with them, but make sure the cage is big enough for more than one.
@ChampaRealLordChampa

So no, it is good to have them in one cage (if it is big enough) , but don't get a nesting box if you get a male and female, unless you are ready for budgie babies :P

I wish I had this knowledge with my first bird as a kid in the 90's. Even though my budgie lived to be 15 years old, I feel like we did a lot on this bad list. He had a mirror that we ever moved, wooden dowels, his cage wasn't too bad in size, he almost never went to the vet and when he did we were not given much information. He lived on seed mostly. He hated when you put your hand up to him, so he never leaned to perch on a hand, but didn't mind being scratched or sitting on you. The good, he was out of his cage almost all day flying around the entire house, and our house wasn't small. My grandmother was his main caregiver, and she spoiled him. We washed and save colorful cans and other thing he showed interest in playing with.

Flock-Talk so I have had plans of getting birds for about a year now. I have read that lovebirds can be very "socially needy". however I have also read that they can be aggressive and shouldn't be caged together. what should I do if I want my birds to be happy and active if I have work for most of the day?

I keep my mated pair of parrotlets together. The cage is small but will be increasing by next year as I’m upgrading them into a massive aviary. They sleep most of the night but by 5 AM (EST) they are out until 6:30 AM. They stay in there until I get home from school at 3:00 PM. They then are out allll day long. We actually bought them a crabapple tree that sits in the house and is attached to their cage by a decorative, tiny white fence that they use to cross. They spend most of their day out in their tree where my family talks to them and plays “touch touch” which is where we wiggle our fingers around them to rile them up into loud chirping and fighting with us play. It is their favorite game ever. Do you cook your vegetables for your birds? They mostly shred them rather than eat them but they love fruit.

I made the space for the birds (in my case rescued green cheek conures) bird proof. It means the only time they spend inside the cage is at bed time. I’m out and about all day, they get the whole house while I’m out. Things I do; protect electrical supplies, keep toilet isolated as they can drown and pop plastic tubing to block the risk of being trapped behind radiators and tiny gaps. Took a door down and replaced with beaded curtain as one got a foot trapped once sat on top of door - it’s a steep learning curve.

I really like your videos. I've learned from you and I will keep watching because I just got a parrotlet and know almost nothing. I am learning about the different foods now. Aggressiveness yes but since Christmas I've learned to just sit back and wait until he? calms down. It's usually not 3 minutes until he is up on my shoulder looking at me. I hope that's the right thing to do. Thanks and keep those videos coming

Hi Flock-talk Can I pick your brains please?...... I have a 4 month old ring neck parrot, he/she has been with me for a little under 2 weeks. My question/problem is...My parrot keeps pacing...walking back and forth on his perch! He has toys , hidden food, we talk to him lots. His cage it's in the window with traffic lower than him and about 20 foot away, we do close the curtains, but the walking continues and it's for about 20 mins. Any help would be appreciated.

Love your Parrotlet knowledge, my little guy is about 2 years old and he's had full freedom since I brought him home. He basically does what he wants and is very aggressive in getting to my shoulder when I eat. I give him egg whites,pasta,chicken, bread,cereal,cheese etc. (He loves this stuff and bites my ear if I deny him any of it) He hasn't flown in over a year but seems ok with it. Please reply and/or opine if I'm doing anything wrong. I love him to death!!
