AND WE'RE BACK! Tyla and I sit down to discuss all things FIRST YEAR MED SCHOOL with you guys! If you haven't watched our guide to first-year pre-med, it will be linked below too! If you are thinking about going to university to go to med school, watch that video first!
Hey guys! My name is Emily Penelope and I am a 3rd-year medical student who loves to talk, shop online, cook, study and hustle hard! (not necessarily in that order hehe). This week, I come to you with one of my super inspiring friends, Tyla! She is also a third-year medical student and we are here to give you the down-low of what to expect during your first year of medical school. This is quite specific to the University of Auckland, but there will be a lot of things/ideas that apply to other medical schools around the world!
I have included some timestamps below to help you navigate this video (let's not lie, this is a hefty one full of juicy info not necessarily relevant to everyone!).
Notes: Sorry for some of the blurry shots, my camera was set to auto, not manual focus (dumb me) and there was quite a lot of construction going on that you might hear!

It's nice to hear that you can chill out a little and not worry about A+. I really want to be a doctor but I think 6 years of that would be really hard.

6 years of A+ would cause burnout in most people! Honestly it’s all about enjoying the journey xx

I watched this before the year started and I'm so grateful! I feel like I had all the answers to everyone's questions and was much calmer throughout the introduction because you'd made it so clear and accessible

can you guys share more in details perhaps your first year stats (idk if its too personal to say your mmi scores, ucat etc) and also do they rank all the students who apply to med? did they give you, your rank, did you apply to other clinical courses, were you waitlisted? etc. Watched the whole video really enjoyed it!! thanks !!!
@MominsWorld

also what is the timeline like? when do u find out u are accepted etc.

I don't think it is very helpful to share our personal scores, because there is really no point in aiming for that/comparing yourself to that. The best bet is to go to FYI.org and look at the average grades/lowest grades there. If there is information that you want that you can't find there, you can always request it for free! I imagine they do rank all the students who apply to med, but you would not be told your ranking. I didn't apply for other clinical courses because I didn't want to do any of those, but I know a lot of people applied for all of the clinical courses! There is a waitlist for all the clinical courses, you are told if you're on the list and I think you can ask your position on the list. There are people that got off the waitlist the day before uni started!

You finish the whole application process late November, and then you usually find out just before Christmas. We found out on the 21st of December, and we had to choose to accept or decline by the 4th of January.

@@EmilyPenelope oh thank you so much for the response it was very helpful ! assuming your making a video in chronological order you might talk about things in general med school can you explain the process of specialization and which courses u take after 2nd year, the website says u choose your courses and stuff and it's really confusing if you could clarify it thatd be great ! thank you so much for your help !!!
@EmilyPenelope

Hey, in second year you don’t pick any of your courses, in third year the only choice you have is which humanities paper you’d like to take. Everyone does the same curriculum. I’m probably not the person to make a video about general med school after the pre -clinical years because I haven’t done them yet! In the clinical years as far as I know, everyone does the same runs throughout the year, like next year in fourth year we have musculoskeletal, general surgery, anaesthesiology, ED, GP, geriatrics, gen med, and specialty med. Each year you do different runs to expose you to different specialties and teaching. After you graduate you are still doing general runs I believe, and the earliest you can choose to specialise is two years after you graduate.

I have the same plant as you. Your one's actually surviving, which is good. Thanks for this video, it's really helpful. I'm new to this channel, and I'm definitely gonna check out more of the videos.

Grateful that you talked about the Imposter Syndrome. It has been weighing me down a bit lately, and made me second guess a few things. Your reassurance about that has been very helpful, and if I run into you in the next year I'll be sure to buy you a coffee to say thanks!

For first year health science do you get different assessments every week? How often did you you get exams and how are they structured?
