This is a comprehensive guide to first-year premed at the University of Auckland, both for Biomed and Healthsci, coming from two girls who are in their third year of medical school 2020. This is applicable to anyone who wants to do a clinical degree :).
Hey guys! My name is Emily Penelope and I am a 3rd-year medical student who loves to bake, cook, shop, study and hustle hard! This week, I sit down with Tyla Warrender and we compare Health Science and Biomedical Science first year at the University of Auckland. We are both third-year medical students and we would have loved a video like this in our last year of highschool/during first year to help us conquer the difficult transition! We hope that this brings you answers to some of the pressing questions you have about entering university, or if you are a first year going into second semester, it helps you approach it with a can-do positive mindset! :D

I know this video was uploaded two years ago, but I just wanted to say that this was really helpful :). I got my acceptance into health science the other day and currently waiting on my biomedical application, I didn’t even think for a second that I’d get in (failed level 3, decided last minute to do a 6 month health science bridging course and got told from the people at my poly tech that I’d never get into Auckland with the certificate I was doing, but decided to try anyways). Because of this I have no idea which one to choose if I get into biomed as well - and this video really helped me understand the differences between the two and what to expect for next year. So thank you so much!!! I’d be so lost otherwise haha.

Do you know if it is possible to do the first year of health sciences or biomed at Auckland then apply to the medical school in Otago or vise versa doing the FYHS at otago then apply to Auckland?
@EmilyPenelope
@EmilyPenelope 3 года назад
Hey! No they don't recommend doing this, they usually don't accept you. You are recommended to do the first year programme at the university where you want to attend medical school. Post grad is a different story - you can attedn whichever university you like and apply from there! x

Hi, this video is really good, was just wanting some advice on decision making with nursing. I am just out of highschool and didn't meet the requirement for one of the table ones (didn't do engish). basically I cant get in this year for nursing, they have said I can do correspondenceand get the requirement for the following year. I am having trouble deciding what to do, I can either wait for the following year to start or go to AUT (which I don't want to due to different types of papers and travel). would love your opinion for this and if you think Auckland university would be good for nursing and worth the wait :).

Hi, I got offers in health science and biomedical science. I really could use some advice on choosing the right one. Is health science easier than biomed? Is physics really tough in biomed becoz im a bit weak in physics. And what do they exactly do in labs Thanks
@EmilyPenelope
@EmilyPenelope 2 года назад
Honestly i think you need to weigh your pros and cons and go from there! One isn't easier than the other, but it could be if you have weaknesses and strengths! I wasn't amazing at physics and I like assignments rather than exams, so I chose health science. Hope that helps! xx

What made you want to attend Auckland Uni instead of Otago?

Lots of reasons - mostly personal ones! Proximity to family, job opportunities whilst studying and having friends in Auckland x

@EmilyPenelope
@EmilyPenelope 3 года назад
I did Certificate of Applied Science at AUT. There is also the Certificate in Health Sciences at UoA and the Tertiary Foundation Certificate. They all lead you towards first year! :)
@raniamahmoud4053
@raniamahmoud4053 3 года назад
@@EmilyPenelope For the certificate in applied science at AUT is there specific marks you need to get for Auckland university to accept you into the bachelor of health science
@EmilyPenelope
@EmilyPenelope 3 года назад
Not that I am aware of, but I think a better option for certificates if you don’t want to go straight into first year, but still are interested in first year would be the TFC at UoA. I don’t think UoA always recognises the AUT Certs. TFC gets you more ready for UoA specific technology, course structure and content.

Oh, no. Dont like Physics or Essays... What should I do then...
@EmilyPenelope
@EmilyPenelope 3 года назад
I think it depends where your strengths in learning lie! You can learn physics or essays, I personally think the uni provides a lot more support to succeed at academic writing whereas they are not providing the same amount of support for physics. You have time to write your essays, whereas the physics course has a big workload and is time pressured. xx

were u guys expecting to get into med school? do u think its like overrated on how hard it is?
@EmilyPenelope
@EmilyPenelope 3 года назад
Hey! I don’t think anyone goes in with the mindset expecting to get into med school. We definitely didn’t! We had applied for other majors by the time we found out. To a certain extent, I believe that people definitely exaggerate how difficult it is, but the amount of content you are expected to learn, perhaps not being the most difficult, is an almighty amount. I think you have to go in with the mindset that you are going above and beyond your normal capabilities for a year of your life to dedicate it to your future, and give it absolutely everything. That way, no matter the outcome, you won’t be disappointed because you will have given it everything and will know you had nothing more to give. Remember that giving it everything still means being healthy, so don’t forget to sleep lots and eat and exercise well. If you are thinking about doing first year pre med I think you need to go in with the expectations it’s going to be the most difficult thing you’ve ever done, rather than hoping it’s not as hard as you think. That way nothing is a surprise :). Hope that helps!

@@EmilyPenelope ohhhh, thanks! I watched the whole vid it was really nice and comforting as a highschool student who overstressed for the future, I read the description and u said u are 3rd year med students, could u do a vid talking abt 2nd year, like do u need a certain GPA to advance to 3rd year or do u just need to pass, pro tips, comparisons between biomed and healthsci with 2nd year med perhaps even application process because I try researching a lot about things like ucat and mmi but it doesnt tell you thinks like what the point system is it etc

This is super useful! But just wondering if you think completing a certificate of applied science to strengthen your sciences before you apply for uni is a good idea? ❤️
@EmilyPenelope
@EmilyPenelope 2 года назад
It really depends on your individual situation! If you didn’t take the sciences at school then a certain could be good, but if you are only lacking in one science then perhaps a summer paper pre uni is a good idea. If you took sciences at school and feel like you did well then you’ll probably be fine! cx

Aw man, for me, I got declined in BHSc because I didn't take any science subjects in my final year of highschool. I thought including them in grade 10 and 11 is fine. This is for students from Thailand though, in case, anyone from Thailand is seeing this comment. It's stressing me so much. I wanted to join a non-clinical pathway, but I may have missed that the university must gonna assume the applicants want to study med. Lol + Cry.
