Hello! This video outlines the knowledge that I've gathered as a first-timer with sheep, having just hit my one year mark of keeping them. If you're interested in keeping sheep and would like to hear a first-timer's perspective then this video is perfect for you.
One of the places I reference in the video for sheep information is Sheep101, here's the website: www.sheep101.info/
The verdict is still that they're great and we love keeping sheep over here at the High Mountain Homestead. Long live sheep!

You are living the dream, not gonna lie, I'm pretty jealous of your set up. My long term goal is to make a living with regenerative agriculture (especially sheep). Look forward to seeing you on more videos!

Just taking it in. Right now we are in Pittsburgh with 2 young men in college. Being 50ish, wife and I have bought our 2nd home situated on 4 acres of tropical rainforest agricultural zoned about 20 minutes drive from Volcanoes National Park. After they graduate, we are out! I’m guessing either Barbados black belly or st. Croix might be better for us once we get surveyed and properly fenced. It will be a huge investment for us because we are NOT rich by any stretch but I could see us making that time commitment everyday for the animals…and truly appreciate them. Thanks for teaching us about sheep!🍄🌈😃🤙

Sheep have much more of a problem with the heat than with cold. Mine use their sheep shed for the shade, and they sleep outside.

I feel that orchard grass is a great hay for sheep, t then I do have an orchard on the property and my sheep are in there all the time, . Wether sheep ( neutered ) CANNOT have alfalfa it gives some kidney stones sheep and goats, I've been reading up on sheep for 5 years and I'm just getting to where I need to be with my little herd of 5, I sold my wethers

How do you seed the pasture without the chickens eating everything you throw out there?
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ Год назад
The chickens were kept off the pasture on only allowed access to their run at this time.

Would it be possible to lease your neighbours -property to expand your grazing area?
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 2 года назад
Well I just moved to greener (and larger pastures). So I'm good on grazing space for now. My neighbor in this video has 2 horses and 2 dairy goats and we're on the same sized lots. So he's pretty much using every square foot of grass like I was. Luckily it's not a problem at my new place.

Have you ever considered mob grazing your sheep. That would help with not using your pig run and alot of other benefits come along with mob grazing. I know you said you over an acre of land that not a lot but making the paradox smaller might be beneficial to you.
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 3 года назад
I have wondered about a true mob grazing system. I wonder what that would be like on a small system like mine. I guess I would do it with electric fences and daily or every other day rotations. Sounds doable if I didn't have a full time job and family on top of this. Also my pasture was absolute garbage last year due to how the previous owners were using it. I think after one more year of proper management, I will have much better forage for the ewes.

I want to get sheep. I am in houston texas. How many should I get first. What’s the cost of lamb usually.
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 2 года назад
Depends on location, breed, age, papers, full-blood, commercial, there's a lot to factor in. Poor quality commercial rams could be $150, whereas a good ewe with papers will be $1,000+

St. Croix are easy keepers, hardy, but gentle. Same with Katahdins. Some people really like Jacobs too.

With the shelter, do they still need access to it? What about predators?
@homesteadingwithPJ

I'm pretty much deep in a city so coyotes haven't been an issue for us. The shelter is basically just a lambing barn these days.

I bought 2 Dorpers as lambs during Covid for pets. We built a shed and mine love it and I lure them in every night with alfalfa. They get upset how when out late, but as he said they stay out in the cold, rain and snow...do not mind. They are over a year now; a fixed male and his sister female. I am also learning, they are very healthy with premium grain in the mornings. Some hay in the winter. I see foxes...we have coyotes and I am still not sure about that? Will they get "adult" sheep? These two are not for meat, they are my buddies whom I feel "I saved two lives". They are just grazers, not real exciting, not real loving...just there haha They will follow me, run up to me if they think I have food. I "try" to brush them since they shed and look pretty brushed. Haven't sheered yet, hope I don't have to because I can't find a sheerer. I do love them.

Oh yeah, more than most sheep. But I've found that the less time I spend with them, and the less dependent they are on me, the less noise they make.

So, we have lawn. Just an acre of flat lawn, a few trees. I'm not 100% sure we'll get sheep, it would be in a few years. Should I start seeding now, or wait until we're a year out of getting sheep? What can I do now to prepare for maybe sheep?
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 3 года назад
Is is traditonal lawn grass? If so you may want to sow some variety of seed in there. Make sure you're getting some kind of legume or protein rich forage for them, as lawn grass won't pack much of a punch.
@careybowden4864
@careybowden4864 3 года назад
@@homesteadingwithPJ Thank you for your reply! It looks like your average lawn. I can tell there's a variety of grasses, but not sure what kind exactly. It could use a re-seeding, so I'm debating on whether to get pasture grass seeds or lawn seed for the time being.
