I recall some of his comments right before he closed down talking not just about his neighbors but the patrons and they were very anti Black (he was describing “good v bad” Black people which really irked me). Even in this doc he lauds being able to open in Lincoln park (one of the two whitest neighborhoods in the city, with the other being Mt Greenwood) as ‘making it’. While opening a biz in Lincoln park is def an accomplishment, it comes off as “I need to know I made it and I know that bc I opened in a white neighborhood”. I’m from Marquette park (where the Second Gentleman grew up; ironically when he mentioned the MLK freedom march he did not mention the monument that was erected on 67th & Kedzie; Kedzie serves as the racial border btwn Black & Mexican Chicagoans on that side of the city) and I live on the north side. Just west of MP is west lawn and S Pulaski houses numerous highly revered Mexican restaurants which are mom and pop owned and do make lots of $. Would those Latino biz owners making $ among a Latino neighborhood with Latino patrons not be deemed successful? It seems that Bailey is chasing whiteness and white folks’ approval.
@STAXONDECK1
@STAXONDECK1 4 месяца назад
@@BertoV ‘race’ is social construct used to create the economic classes, the old color line was anything south of Roosevelt , the south side only has a handful of neighborhoods with properties that are over 1mill (they are nowhere near Marquette park prices around there are in 200k, 300k) compared to Lincoln park and other luxury markets . In Chicago 1million is not even considered luxury anymore you have to be around 1.3mill.

This is going to be something that some of us aren't going to want to hear, but I will put it out there. If Mr. Bailey had opened a business which was more "mainstream", he may not have had the same problems. Chicago football player, the late Walter Payton, had nightclubs all over the city and suburbs. But you know what the difference was, he catered to the mainstream. That is why he didn't have the same issue. There is nothing wrong with a black-owned business. But sometimes in order for that business to succeed, we have to think outside the box. There is nothing wrong with a black-owned business catering to its community. But can't we own other establishments that cater to different demographics? Other ethnic groups do it, why can't we? Instead of focusing on just a "black" need, what about a need for whomever. In that area of Lincoln Park, he could have opened up a bar that catered more to the demographics of the neighborhood. But he could have also opened up another establishment catered to African Americans more Uptown.

Chicago is in the midwest but the it may as well be down south because thats the mentality of most WP people in Illinois and the BP in Chicago can't keep their neighborhoods together. The 2020 looting of their own neighborhoods made it so that there are no more grocery stores or shopping centers on the westside and southside of Chicago where most BP reside so now they go to the suburbs where whyte people live for shopping but most of them are starting to destroy those areas too. Bp in Chicago just don't take care of their neighborhoods and bring trash and rachetness. Not all BP but majority and hispanics have dozens of neighborhoods that they've took over. Cicero, Pilsen, Berwyn, Melrose Park, Northlake, North Riverside, Stone Park and even Maywood are all hispanic now.

The segregation in our city is all a result of redlining. Not giving the same loans and payment terms to poor black and Hispanic, pushing them to the west and south side. Underfunding their schools as the communities don’t have a lot of money, and taxes go to schools. All this continued to happen in the bush jr era, so 20-25 years ago, and its lasting effects harm people to this day.
@CLOWNAIDS
@CLOWNAIDS 4 месяца назад
This segregation against African Americans is historically true and can be researched. This was purposely. However, segregation was pretty much put in place as well for "Migrants" and they enjoyed it this way. Ye old meat factory workers would have their own lunchtime bars and if another ethnic individual (say Irish walking into a Polish bar) it was over with. Eventually, as time moved on, people did their own and moved about. HOWEVER. Racism was and is your key player. Judging a book by its cover due to this country's racism is your second in command and still standing. ESPECIALLY in Chicago. The gentlemen in the beginning said for himself that he's gotten turned down for his looks on rentals. If you're a property owner in million dollar neighborhood Lincoln Park, who are you putting your trust into between the first guy or the second? Right... That neighborhood was not ready for an African American social establishment I bet and the misunderstanding I bet was the "I told you so of the year" but honestly. Looks do go a long way, unfortunately. If the second guy had a business down there it would of been a coffee house or something and never a complaint. Bet. But nonetheless, segregation is still a thing, banks still apparently give African Americans hard times on decent interest loans despite their credit and history many a time, and landlords will definitely still hold prejudice (unless you look like that second guy) . I'll tell ya what. I went to O Block inside, never recorded but I meant well. I also went to that mart next door. No problems. I'm half Hispanic and Irish. I'm not saying cruise around like you're a rival Spanish gang member, but I was there to ask questions for a narrative I was going to write, and to hand out money. I also frequent Gary Indiana where I feel like the outcast by all means in that situation compared to Chicago. Chicago African American neighborhoods look at me like I am there to buy drugs or gangbang. People in Gary look at me like I'm odd but are very relaxed and not on edge in person at all. When speaking to the gentlemen in the white tank tops, I know who they were but they had no idea of my intentions, especially without recording. They were happy to hear that I wanted to hear from them rather than their 63rd oppositions, however they were still on edge due to my ethnicity and the fact that there's rival gangs about of Hispanic backgrounds.. In Gary, the gangs over there know that is not the case.

Most Back folks in Hyde Park, Bronzeville or the South suburbs aren't driving all the way to Lincoln Park to eat. Choose to havt o e your business where you are welcome, celebrated and supported. And in a place more frequented by those people. It's foolish to try and create a space for "Black Love" in a predominately white community. Of course the people aren't going to want it!! Also, econoomics should have taught the owner something about catering to your audience. Smoke Daddy in Wicker Park is black owned and has been there for YEARS because the owner doesn't lead with his blackness. The restaurant is for everyone. People of all races frequent the place AND from all over the city. if you're going to be in Lincoln Park then just BE... leave the labels and the whole black love thing out of it. It's not that Lincoln Park won't accept a black owned restaurant. It's how the owner went about things.
