That one Venezuelan guy has been here for a year-and-a-half and hasn't found a job. Dude a Mexican would have found a job the next day after getting here. seriously!
I've seen some of them working under the table for cash in some spots. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of those opportunites for every single one. But agree with some of the comments above that some are just waiting for anything thats given. It's tough either way. Especially when you think of all the other latino groups that are well establiahed here already and look out for each other. There's no network of Venezuelans here yet for them to rely on each other. Sadly, a lot of us other latinos just talk shit saying they're this and that instead of helping each other out, when all of our families have been through similar journeys.
Bro, we can't help our own people. How the hell do ppl expect the US to take care of all of these people? We have our own people struggling to get jobs and becoming homeless. We cannot be the hero for everyone. Not only that, the criminals are sneaking in with the actual people that need help. Thats a whole different issue. We need to take care of our own people first, before we even try to help someone on the outside.
Yes, I know people that cannot find a decent place to live that they can afford. All of these people are supposed to live and work here. Where? How? It's so crazy this is happening. This needed to be gradual not as it being done. They feel that they have as much right to be here as everyone else. I have family members that have fought in wars, so I don't believe that. They should fix their own country. As we need to do with ours.
i think u need to get off ur ass and make some money. homeless people are there for a reason, these immigrants traveled thousands of miles just to live.
Thank you for talking about this, I've lived in Chicago my whole life, and the sad part is that we're bringing the immigrants here and can't find ways for them to actively survive, yet, we also have veterans in the streets.
Exactly, we don't have enough resources to even help the ones who served our country. We need to figure out our problem first before assessing a new migrant (housing) crisis

It's like 50 people outside, it's cold and raining.i understand they have a situation they're trying to escape, but we need closed and secured borders. There is great unrest in the world right now, these folks need to solve the issues they have at home. They estimate there will be at least 15 busses a day (40-50 people/bus)coming into the city, now imagine just 20 percent of them have children within the next 9-12 months. The big thing ive seen as a chicago resident is that people that actually live here do not agree with the decisions being made yet the people in the suburbs that arent being directly affected are for it all.
That's not true at all man! I'm an Elmhurst resident (so 20 mins with no traffic and I'm at the lake from 290) and everyone around me including myself are against bringing all of them to Chicago. I saw them all over the streets first hand five different times through the months of July and August. And it was crazy. They're everywhere because they can't be in the hotels during the day. So the alleys are just full of them. So don't say everybody from the suburbs is like that because that's absolutely not true. There are many people from the city that are all for the Palestines coming to Chicago as well.
Not true at all. We all hate it and I think most agree we shouldn't be a sanctuary city. What I don't understand, they come here and are surprised there living on the streets. What do you expect? Money doesnt grow on trees.

They still ultimately seemed to be pretty surface level though as I don;t think hes able to have more complex conversations yet in Spanish.

I live 20 minutes from Chicago and my husband is an immigrant and I think this is so messed up. On the news the other night they had a homeless man who said he’s a veteran and fought for this Country and he’s sleeping in the streets while the immigrants have food and a warm place to sleep it’s a sad reality… we have nowhere to put these people and continue to let more come I truly am at a loss for what the politicians are thinking
Well the part of the story that is left out is the Vet is an addict or alcoholic and is unwilling to go to the treatment services that are offered and he cant get into any housing because they're all drug and alcohol free. That is the biggest problem with the homeless outreach in the US is their strict abstinence policies. Every homeless person in the US pretty much has the opportunity to go into treatment if they wanted to, they just choose not to. But until they do, or until the outreach programs relax the rules on drugs/alcohol and at least let ppl in initially then help them get sober once theyre inside and safe then the homeless issue will keep on the way it is. I doubt the refugee housing has these same rules.
If you've seen his videos then you'd know nearly all homeless are drug addits and prefer living on the streets even when given the chance to become clean. Sad reality when the majority dont want help
Awesome video Tommy. The immigration issue is a complicated one. On one hand,I feel for alot of these people just trying to escape a horrible situation and provide for their families but on the other hand, the border is open way too much. We have tons of people out there that hate Americans so its a threat. I think overall, the immigration is being handled wrong. Then you look at the homeless situation we have or veterans that dont get that help that migrants do. Its complicated for sure
81 million Americans voted for this, Joe was very clear about his plans for the border and ideas concerning immigration policy. The price tag for being a Sanctuary City comes with a price tag, some of which will be impacting our already homeless population.
Same thing in NYC. Homeless everywhere. Hotels filled with migrants. My buddy tried to book a hotel room for the night in brookln and 3 different hotels cancelled their reservation on after another a couple weeks after booking because hotels are closing to house migrants. Left her without a room last minute. I booked a room in brooklyn months in advance for the same night and my reservation was cancelled last minute with no explaination or response from the hotel when i inquired about the abrupt cancelation assumedly because of the same reason. NYC also basically banned Airbnbs so it left me scrambling to figure something out last minute. Its the same in manhattan and queens. The city runs on tourism and tourists cant even get a place to stay. Its bad.
All these hotels and facilities that house illegal immigrants are profiting off the crisis by taking the government contracts. I wouldn’t be surprised that the hotel owners are charging the government triple the day rate (maybe more) knowing the government is desperate. It explains why they are not prioritizing tourism bookings they make more money housing illegals.
Chicago and New York are tough cities and has been holding it down for America for a long time. I know tensions are high right now and we have alot of internal problems already. But this nation is built tough and we will figure it out. Also New York wouldn’t be the mega city it is without immigrants. I also get the frustration with Americans. We got this.
They banned AirBnB in NYC so folks could have more housing because tourists are wanting to stay in trendy neighborhoods making it even more difficult to afford rent because of people like yourself lol.
Many of the homeless are drug addicts and alcoholics. Housing comes with the stipulation that they would have to be sober. Most aren’t willing to enter into that agreement. Would have to offer something like a “ Wet house” which the UK has. ( in this case it involves providing a controlled amount of alcohol to the residents.) These are people that have not been successful with recovery programs. The idea behind it is that it gives them a safe place to live and a sense of community. And I guess it’s also a “ win” for tax payers. It’s a form of “ harm reduction”. The homeless people that should be a priority are the ones working who still can’t afford a roof over their heads. The immigrants in this vid seem like they are grateful and want to contribute to society. But no city can afford to have an unlimited number pouring in! It’s simply a matter of logistics, not one of humanity.
@@Catherine-u8lthat may be true however our country has a history of helping other people when we have problems within. Also the fact that the United states is slowly moving towards corruption like Venezuela
Very true, too many homeless people... How can they make room for the people coming into the country and not the years people have been on the streets. Veterans that defended the US, out on the streets. Jumping from place to place just trying to live, its sad man. If we have the money, everyone should be indoors. Don't hide the money until you want yourselves to look better and end up trashing yourself 10x over.
Here's an answer, albeit an unfortunate one, as I too believe all people should have housing. Migrants contribute to the economy. They take the low-paying and difficult jobs that most Americans don't want to work, and there's a surplus of these kind of jobs, especially now. *Agriculture in this country would literally collapse overnight without migrant workers* as that entire sector heavily relies on their labor, with immigrants comprising the vast majority of agricultural workers. Though in the short term accommodating these newly arrived migrants will cost sanctuary cities like Chicago a fortune, in the long-term their participation in the workforce and taxes will benefit the economy substantially. Homeless people on the other hand, are unfortunately a drain on the economy. Most do not have jobs or contribute much in the way of tax dollars, so they're a net loss for the economy. In my own personal opinion this doesn't mean they don't deserve housing, but in the view of politicians and even the public, this makes them a burden. This is a systemic failure where the root causes fail to be addressed, in large part because of apathy and negligence, but also because it's a very complicated problem to solve. Homelessness is a very multifaceted issue, as there's so many contributing factors - mental health, drug addiction, lack of education, unemployment, criminality. It's very hard to stabilize let alone rehabilitate many of these people. So unfortunately with that kind of glaring contrast between migrants and the homeless, it's not hard to see why politicians would choose to allocate tax dollars to migrants and not the homeless.
@@purplespaceship2417 Well said, I can understand that side of it. But my main focus is our vets. As you said mental health, drug addiction, lack of education, unemployment, criminality. These are all part of the people who don't want to try and establish themselves as a working citizen, get clean or help. I know many people who have just fallen on hard times, but they went through blood, sweat and tears climbing out of that hole. Personally I don't believe it should be this hard to get help and get out of that place as I also know a lot that failed. If people are wanting to change there lives just like how the migrants did, why don't they get the help migrants are. As I said before everyone should have a roof over there head, and food in there stomachs, but some go without for days. Go from place to place looking for a job, getting turned down because they don't have a bank account, Place of residence, or clean clothes consistently on there backs. I believe everyone should have a chance at the American dream, but with everything going on in the us. Its hard to get by working a full time job, causing many people to work a second just to pay for housing, food and other necessities. The problem comes from the top top, if it can ever be fixed up there many people would have a lot better of a chance at establishing themselves here, and also coming here.

@@sarbantz I'll say this first; saying racism use to be a way to make someone feel guilty or if that's all someone could come up with, pull the race card. Doesn't work on me. Good try. I don't see how you sense racism truly when it's about our borders being invaded like crazy with people from many different places. Not a specific race. There isn't a specific color or race . You speak on Chicago having enough room for them all; put that aside for a moment and think that maybe it's not that there isn't room but it's the fact they are getting free money, a phone, a roof over their head and getting treated good. Many US citizens on the street, trying to work, battling addiction, have healthcare problems and not a damn thing to help the people who have been here since birth. It's not about people coming here, it's about the rush of so many not knowing where they are from, their intentions, diseases being brought over the border and like NY, laying out on sidewalks as if it's nothing. If you did research, you'd see where having open borders and migrants pouring in is one big way to usher in communism. That's usually how communist nations begin. And this makes you think of racism? Doesn't fit the definition. Also have you noticed that so many are young men, military age and they've been doing military training already which includes indoctrination about US citizens . So there's a good reason they had everyone come in . No accident. A friend of mine is an Uber driver and he was driving a migrant to it's destination. Said he was nice and also said he was a migrant who was trained for backup military. Not for other countries. But being trained to fight us if we rise up. They give them an app on their phone and when it beeps, that means they have a message and have to return to their location. Said when he got here he wasn't forced but basically pushed to take the classes, military. And the US is using them as pawns to wipe us out. He said the guy was from Columbia and said he actually doesn't want to be in the US anymore but can't leave. So where's the racism?? This has nothing to do with color. And you know that.
You can walk thousands of miles but you can’t put some Seeds in the ground and grow food all year long. Yes Chicago sounds like the place to go where it’s -10 and windy

The politicians pockets are being filled with money and we as citizens are the ones that are forced to make this work and clean up the mess they are throwing on us.
Crazy how they come here illegally then complain about free housing we give them when we have our own housing and homeless crisis already. Let’s care for our own first
if you grew up in America and are homeless you are probably a drug addict....just saying there are plenty of programs to get help you just dont choose them
I like how the migrant basically said "They don't know what it's like on the inside" in regard to the hotel when asked how he feels about homeless Americans feeling they're being treated unfairly. So surely he wouldn't have a problem switching sleeping spots with them right?
Ugh the living spaces are so cramped, the food isn't full 10 course meals, they only gave us 5 games for our brand new ps5 and now the 10 games I wanted, and the doctor is forced to look at me and give me medication all for free... It's so bad!
Whoever’s reading this, i pray that whatever you’re going’s through gets better and whatever you’re struggling with or worrying bout is going to be fine and that everyone has a fantastic day! Amen
I simply just quoted the man. God forbid anything similar to what is going on in Venezuela 🇻🇪 ever happens to you during your Lifetime here in America; you’d be in their shoes empathizing some trying to seek refuge elsewhere. I can imagine someone such as yourself traveling to South America and having to travel through the Darién Gap re-evaluating your Life and wondering 💭 “why me”?
And what's your response if what happens in america to make it like Venezuela is actually caused by the immigrants? What do you do then? Learn about the statistics.@@JosuéDelValle-u3u
Chicago has enough space for every migrant. It is a big city with more than enough space like hotels, shelters, community centers, colleges, police stations, parks, graveyards, under bridges, etc. I sense a little bit of racism in comments here.
No way bro was in my hood 🔥 Btw thanks for covering this. The last few months since this crisis have brought lots of changes to the city and it's sad to see these people everywhere I go having to be in the streets.
It doesn't matter what part of the world, a person lives at, it doesn't matter if they're poor, or not, but most of the time, you'll be able to tell the difference between a good person, and a bad person. Not one of these guys, that were interviewed, look as though, they're good people. They look 💯 thugs.
Millions of legal Hispanics here already. Many from climates much wamer than Venezuela. Coats, heaters and warm bus/train lamps stations where invented. In Chicago's winter i actually get too hot amd sweaty and take off clothes to get fresh air. Love our winters ❤
If people of Chicago don't think santuary City with 1000 people, wait until there are 10,000 migrants coming into their city. Or maybe 100,000. Eventually they will feel their resource thinning and their jobs option reducing.
