Before the Fischer-Spassky match Petrosian said, "You cannot allow Fischer a position where he has an advantage for free. He plays such positions like a machine. You can't even hope for a mistake." I think Games 6 & 7 of this match are what led him to say this.

@fundhund62

It's actually one of only two serious candidate moves in the position (the other being 22.a4). Plus, Karpov still thinks that 22.a4 might have been better! Probably one of the most overhyped moves of all time..
@WilliamJonesChess
@WilliamJonesChess 4 года назад
@@fundhund62 I agree. This move does not need any over-hype. Just play 22. a4 and get on with your queenside majority.
@hosiahjones
@hosiahjones 13 дней назад
@@WilliamJonesChess@fundhund62 @powerpkaychess You both missed the point entirely. The point is NOT to "over-hype" the move. The point is that in that era nobody understood the Fischer endgame (rook bishop vs rook knight) except for Fischer. In fact, nobody really understood the depth of the Fischer endgame until the 2000s when Magnus came along and doubled down on the Fischer endgame. Grischuk also played the Fischer endgame with class.

I had just gotten married and my wife got me interested in Chess then. I could not understand why all Chess players went bonzo over this game. It made me learn and understand the game deeper. The 'WOW' effect of players can move people to want to know more about Chess. That makes videos like yours well needed. Thanks for the efforts.

Paraphrasing the great blind writer Borges ("God...Who, with magnificent irony, gave Me at once both books and night...") as "Caïssa, who with magnificent irony, gave Fischer both omniscience and transience". Want to travel to a parallel universe where Kasparov and Fischer, at the peak of their powers, face-off for 24 games WITH Daniel's commentary (how else would the rest of us know what the hell's going on!).

Fischer obviously expanded the boarders of how to play chess in those days. I've read in a Swedish chess magazine that Botvinnik claimed that a better defence for black was 20.- Txe1+ 21. Txe1 Se8 22. Kf2 Sc7 and the black knight protects both isolated pawns. But even then white is clearly better. And then we have the black ploy 34. - Tb8 ...

The famous Argentinian Grandmaster Najdorf said: "Fischer plays HIS SYSTEM!" Meaning he played his special way. This is the wisest, most astute statement about Fischer's playing style I have ever heard or read! 22. Nxd7 is a real, typical Fischer decision, and I think it was almost instantaneous. He won it his way.

I think When white king went to e3,the best move for black maybe was ke7 and after white king's move,black king could stay in the fight with to go to d8!isn't it?!
@MrRobbyvent
@MrRobbyvent 4 года назад
well, black was already in trouble and this move doesn't change much his situation. I think it gives also to white an extra tempo because when black king is in e7, he goes Kd4+ with check and reach his dream position, better than in the actual game for white.

Excellent commentary of a famous game. However I disagree with Fischer: his best game of the match was the sixth. In this game the opening system of Petrosian was really poor, so for Fischer was pretty easy to reach an almost winning position just playing "simple" moves.
@alieskandari633
@alieskandari633 4 года назад
Archaeopteryx there were not easy moves to find!!That knight and Bishop exchange off went into chess history. Look at those 20 minutes of thinking by Fischer. He must calculated this line up to that move. Because later on he played so fast.
@archaeopteryx7405
@archaeopteryx7405 4 года назад
@@alieskandari633 I wrote "simple" moves. Please read with care before make a comment. Then Nxd7 is slight inferior respect to a4, but the position is however clearly won even exchanging the good knight for the bad bishop. Let's say that on practical point of view Nxd7 was the best choice to close the game in a dozen of moves.

A timeless positional strategic masterpiece game of Fischer against positional former world champion. Botvinik used to hate Fischer since his early games in candidate games when he was 15. They both trashed talk about each other. Russians bring excuse that Petrossian was not on his elements. As you said Fischer looked beating Petrossian so easy. As he did the same things to Timanove and Larson earlier. Thanks GM King for your commentary on this game👍
@ksfromgermany2248
@ksfromgermany2248 4 года назад
That applies to the Larsen match. But the one against Taimanov was disappointing, considering the games. Fischer himself said it should have ended 3.5:2.5, and he was right. Against Taimanov, Fischer didn't show too much superiority and had quite some trouble.
@hubertsang7418

Even a young Fischer was willing to give a 2 point advantage to Botvinnik in a match just to show dangerous he was to all the soviet players.
