The 1970 Interzonal was held in Palma de Mallorca from November 9-December 12, and was the last Interzonal held as a one-section round robin. With the tournament swelling to 24 players and further expansion on the way, future changes were inevitable. The following players vied for six slots in the candidates matches to be held in 1971: William G Addison, Miroslav Filip, Robert James Fischer, Efim Geller, Svetozar Gligoric, Vlastimil Hort, Robert Huebner, Borislav Ivkov, Eleazar Jimenez Zerquera, Bent Larsen, Milan Matulovic, Henrique Mecking, Dragoljub Minic, Renato Naranja, Oscar Panno, Lev Polugaevsky, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Jorge Alberto Rubinetti, Vasily Smyslov, Duncan Suttles, Mark Taimanov, Wolfgang Uhlmann, Tudev Ujtumen..
Ujtumen from Mongolia, about as outside as an outsider could get, actually held the lead by himself after round 3. However, reality and Robert J. Fischer set in, as the American quickly soared to a dominating position. The other contenders didn't worry about it too much; after all, you only had to finish in the top six to qualify for the Candidates, and there was even a seventh spot open for a reserve. So they played it safe, while Fischer kept working hard.
At the quarter pole following round 6, Fischer had 5.5 points and a 1.5 point lead on Geller, Gligoric, Larson, Panno, and Ujtumen. But then came a bad stretch: he managed to draw lost positions in round 7 and 8, but Larsen didn't let him off the hook in round 9. By now the lead had vanished, as Geller joined Fischer at the top with 6.5.
That led to the critical round 12 encounter between the leaders, Geller holding a half-point lead and playing the White pieces. Any normal grandmaster, when Geller offered an early draw, would have accepted to get an easy half-point closer to qualification. Fischer, hungry for a win after five rounds without one, refused.
Geller played inaccurately and lost a pawn, reaching a difficult rook ending. Eventually, a hallucination and a final mistake sealed his fate, and Fischer took the lead. The rest was a matter of technique: Fischer won two more in a row, took a couple of draws for a breather, then started his famous streak with full points in his last seven games.

Can we take a moment to appreciate how far Fischer and Tal and all the other great master of the past including Morphy have developed chess so much...Their brilliance can not be given enough merit...Just consider the fact that these players had 0 access to engines...and some grandmasters today are not even close to the strength of our forefathers in chess...Thank you for all your sacrifices over the years :)

YOur channel is my favorite. Fischer had a way of destroying people who never competed by keeping them from competing. In my case, I analyzed my own chess and found that I was able to process some 12 to 13 moves ahead. But I read that Fischer claimed to think some 15-16 moves in advance. I decided that there was never going to be a place for me in competitive chess, based solely upon his claim. Later he admitted that this was a public bluff and that he really thought 12-14 moves ahead. After suffering two near-death head injuries, I cannot see more than 4-5 moves ahead, so I don't play much anymore. That is about me, but I love your commentary and analysis. Of course, Fischer became nearly insane due to his playing chess when he was not playing chess. I wish the US Government would not have been involved and it makes me wonder how long he could have remained on top as reigning champion.

"it's a past pawn, not a fast pawn." genius. probably not and original quote but perfectly timed during a well flowing commentary. as an intermediate player with an understanding of the fundamentals i found your analysis a real breath of fresh air; i could only imagine what Fischer was thinking leading up to the forced exchange!

Again, Fischer shows no tactical firework like Tal, but surprisingly subtle positional play...
@2199SPUDMAN
@2199SPUDMAN 5 лет назад
That's precisely why he was so dangerous a player. He could beat you in all three phases of a game, and he didn't care which. He certainly could match Tal in terms of tactical ability. In fact, Fischer's attacks were far less speculative than Tal's and were very deeply calculated. If Tal sacked a knight on you, there was good chance it was unsound. If Fischer sacked a piece on you, you were pretty much dead meat.
@northshores7319
@northshores7319 3 года назад
I bet when all the Soviet GM's saw this game they gave up hope that Spassky would beat Fischer as it was a prime example of perfect positional play with both pawns and pieces just like Capablanca in his prime. It was because of this type of play that Tal told his fellow GM's that on no account can you allow Fischer even the slightest advantage.
@larrylindgren9484
@larrylindgren9484 3 года назад
That's easier said than done. Fischer had a way to always force you to play your pieces the way he wanted you to play them. He also seemed in every match win the first 2 games. You were now forced to get wins in games that were best for you to play for a draw. Fischer then wins a few of these games as you are playing your position wrong not playing for a draw. Fischer then stream rolled you. Just like he did on his way to the title. Hand any world champion like Spassky a 2-0 lead you had already lost the match. He'd just draw you 20+ games in a row. Not only did Fischer win he won going away. That's what made Fischer so scary to play. You never had him when he was in is prime so to speak. He forced you to play to his strengths not yours. Then it was good luck. He stream rolled you.

7:20 -- While either position is rated 0.00 by the engine, Qc7 is an inaccuracy in my opinion as opposed ti Qc8 to control the white diagonal and deny it to Fischer's white bishop after his e-pawn is resolved. 7:36 -- Ne6 is the better move. 8:09 -- Rc7 is better than Rd7 (d7 is a white square, abd c7 keeps an eye on Fischer's c-pawn); the engine has been rating play dead even until now. 8:46 -- Rd4 is actually the engine's preference here (although White is already +1.2ish due to the inferior Rc7 on the previous turn). 9:23 -- The rook trade isn't immediately forced, as Fischer could have played c6 or Rb3, and the engine prefers either.
@jampubharadwaj9374
@jampubharadwaj9374 3 года назад
First stop trusting the engine. This is a practical game. If Qc8, it's easy to see this line: Rxd6 Rxd6 Qxd6 Rd7 Qxb6 Nxe4. Yes, this line seems good for black. But, you have to analyze what happens after h4 before Rxd6. What compensation would black have for the d6 pawn. A lot of effort to be driven into a complicated variation which the engine calls "equal", but in practicality, you are playing a pawn down and looks worse to play after h4 Ne6 Rxd6 Rxd6 Qxd6(I am sure you will find a line with something that involves h4 Ne6 Rxd6 Nd4 Bd3 Rxd6 Qxd6 Rd7, but I don't know even if that is a good play for black) and I don't see sufficient compensation for the pawn as a human. Secondly, analyzing the game with the engine in terms of numbers such as 0.0 or 1.2 is pointless. If stockfish was analyzing alphazero moves, stockfish would keep saying it's better or equal in terms of numbers until alpha proves it can win every game from a 0.0 or -1.2. The most important thing in chess analysis is understanding time and space. Whoever can manipulate these qualities with much more freedom with their pieces would always have an advantage whether it is humans or machines. And no engine that we possess still understands it that well as alpha proved.

1:39 I'd be psyched out to sit across from Fischer at the board there. Wouldn't you? I imagine he intimidated players. I recall a soviet GM advised another Soviet GM before he played Fischer when Bobby was young. He warned him that when you plan an attack of Fischer's king, don't hope for a blunder or do it if there's only one way out, because Bobby will find it and counter attack. It has to be airtight.
