Thanks Kevin for sharing your knife making process. I picked up a couple old kitchen knives at the recycle centre a while back, I just finished making a carver similar to yours. Used it today, works and feels great! Thanks again for the videos and the inspiration for me to get back into carving.
You’ve set a new standard for carving knives!! A long time admirer and follower of your carvings and ability.......now we know the rest of the story on your knife.......good video.....thanks!! Glen
What a great idea i had to give up fishing after second hip replacement had to sell my boat so started whittling im now going to remodel all my fishing knifes thanks for your videos set me on a new venchure just love it had i started whittling first i would never have time for fishing.
Thanks Kevin. I have my gram-pa’s old fishing knife. I think I will see if I can’t fashion it into a similar carving knife. I love your videos! I’m just getting started carving after 40 years of woodworking-making furniture. Health has gone way down hill but still love to work with wood. I can still sit down and carve. You are a very creative carver. Your work is amazing. All my best to you and your family in the new year my friend. Cheers!
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for all your time and talent in making them . Have you written any books? I've been looking online, but haven't found anything.
Loved your video. Fascinating. Discovered your videos posting some of my own. Just started posting them. Really enjoyed watching it. Going to start watching them all. Look forward to learning more of your style.
Nice repurpose of that old fish knife. I have an old (1950s) "Forgecraft" kitchen knife, made from an old saw blade back in it's day. Repurposed it as a carving knife now- and it's great and one of my favorite carvers. The Best to you in 2019 !
I have an old saw here that I considered getting a knife made from. Don’t know if I know how to do it. One way to find out I guess. All the best to you
Kevin that knife is really high carbon steel looking at the amount of sparks coming from it!!! Since you inspired me to do the same, I have made three knives like yours by similar methods, but still yours seems to be the best! Good one Kevin, Regards from John in England
I am a new fan thanks to another youtube woodcarver who recommend your channel. Great video! That old fish knife that had been rattling around in a drawer for years that I had very little use for now has a new useful purpose!
A buddy of mine is going home to the lower north shore in the new year . He's suppose to bring me a fishing knife . If he does I'll be making a carving knife like that . Thanks for the vid Kevin Happy New year.
Hello Kevin, recently I found 2 used Victorinox pruning knives on-line. One of them was pretty " used" so I decided to repurpose it much the same way you did the fishing knife. I took a liking to Victorinox knives. I don't quite have it as sharp as I would like just yet but I can tell I'm going to enjoy using it. One day maybe I'll be half as good as you ! ( probably not)
Hey Sean. I’m sure it wouldn’t be much a problem to match skills with me. Just keep on doing it. The knives sounds interesting. I’m not familiar with that kind of knife but no doubt it’s the best kind.
Nice job Kevin, looks like a good bit of steel there going by the spark pattern - blade appears about 3", so excellent roughing knife. I make mine by re-purposing all manner of blades as long as the steel is good quality - you soon find out if it's not. Thanks and have a great new year.
I made my own using an old high carbon steel filet knife by following this video. I didn’t use a fish hook sharpener but instead used a similar Dremel grinding bit and my 1 x 30 sander to reprofile and then sharpen. Can’t wait to put it to work roughing out. I’m sure I’ll never be able to do a finished character solely with it like you do. Thanks for the instruction Kevin.
I hope this makes sense. It appears that on one side of your blade is done with a flat edge and the other side is rather a chisel edge. Am I right? One person said to use a flat edge and this was the first time I have seen both used. Flat edge is like 15 degrees and a chisel edge is like 25 degrees....hard to put to words, but hope you understand.
real nice job Sir - i have an ole broken off Providence cutlery sheefied steel knife i was gonna try this with - you seen to use a real flat cuttin angle but hard to tell - wondered if u cud give me an idea of the angle or how much to raise the knife up off the flat position - if it aint too much trouble thanks and take care
@@KevinCoates98 no Sir - the cutting angle that u sharpen the blade at - it looks like a real flat angle like 10 deg or so - im havin trouble gettin it rite and thot id ask thanks
Outstanding work Kevin! I follow your carving religiously and need a rough out knife like you use so well. Off to the thrift store... Happy New Year and keep posting.
There wasn't enough heat going into the metal he was using a lite touch. As long as you don't see the steel change colors it will be okay. An in my opinion a little color is still alright. It would start to get a yellowish straw,or hay like color, and then rather quickly go to blue then blue-purple. As long as you keep it in light-yellow it's alright, but really you should quench it every few moments.
Great video! One of these days I’ll learn to sharpen my carving knives correctly. Currently, when I “attempt” to sharpen, my knife comes out even duller. Fortunately, I can blame lousy carvings for this problem. So, there’s definitely an upside to being an idiot at sharpening.
I think that it is hard to learn to sharpen knives and chisels and gouges just from watching a video, and the best way is to learn from someone that has sharp tools. Everyone does it slightly different and you will develop your own style as time goes on once you learn the basics.
Hi Kevin.....I live in Spaniards Bay and I have never seen old knives like this in the second hand stores. After watching your videos I have been looking for some of them. Could you please tell me a good place to look for some. I'm not sure if someone in the family knows someone who works at a fish plant. Thanks
Hi Rolf, I had two of them for the past 30-40 yrs. The one in the latest video someone gave me recently. There should be a few of these knives about. Where to is the question. You can get a Green River boning knife on Amazon. They did have them a few months back. It’s the same as on of mine. They cost $20-$30
I could have cut it in a few seconds with my big grinder. I didn’t what to get it too hot. The thing is I don’t know a lot about cutting metal so I took my time. I got the job done so that’s all that matters. Another thing, I don’t like cutting with these little blades full speed. I had one break on me before and I had a piece pierced my face
