Fish on @ 9:45 (if you want to go right to the fight)
300K views! (06-02-18) Thank you! I'm honored. Please SUBSCRIBE to my channel to see more footage like this, and use links in description (below) get the same gear I used to catch this fish.
I had the great privilege of catching the fish of a lifetime during the crazy new moon blitz in August at the Cape Cod Canal. On this day, I was targeting cow stripers, and I discuss the things I did to maximize my chances of making that happen. The fight from a fish like this is epic, and I'm so glad I was able to get it on video to share with you all.
Enjoy and Tight Lines!

Since you're doing catch and release, holding a fish that big in a vertical position while weighing is a big no-no. Gravity's effect on a fish of that size vertically can be fatal due to damage to internal organs. If you care about weight, you should buy a bag to hold the fish horizontally while you take your measurements. I hope you see this, because you seem like an ethical fisherman. You probably just didn't know you were handling the fish improperly. Nice catch though!

Great fish. Not a great release. Never move a fish forward and backwards when releasing, it messes with their breathing and puts more stress on a fish
@caseG80
@caseG80 5 лет назад
bjtimmer3 instead of stating what he did wrong why not add your tips on how it’s supposed to be done because I’ve always believed you work the fish back and forth getting water into the gills until the fish shows the strength to swim off I’ve released hundreds of fish this way without ever a problem just like in this video so I guess I’m doing it wrong to please Inform use on the right way?

Great fish! One release tip I would suggest- just hold the fish by its tail and support the body while shaking the head back and forth gently instead of moving it back and forward. Their gills aren't meant to take water in backwards and it can kill them. I ended up keeping a large striper that I couldn't revive once because of this. Doesn't always happen but they're slow going if they get water in backwards

Chris Rodgers : So right you are, I learned that years ago at a ProAm Largemouth Bass Tournament ( I was the Am 😬 ) But yes Chris you are so right and what an opportune time to discuss this, if you just grab her tail as Achamess did, For one thing, believe it or not, it's kinda on the same lines of ( especially with that big of a fish, fighting against you & the current, she's pooped ) you running a mile or two, and as your trying to catch your breath someone is pulling and pushing your body rapidly as your gasping, and with no support from her tail forward ( at like 46"s ) she barely has the strength to stay upright, so, as yours did the come side up, this pro I was blessed to fish with & many other anglers there, after weighing in would release there own fish ( as opposed to weigh master ) He told me of numerous studies done that even though they swim off ok, within the next couple hours they end up floating on there sides & dying, So by taking them in weigh bag, back to boat being its deeper water then the ramp or shorelines, lay down and hold the belly for support and just slightly move the tail back and forth, never pulling them backwards and only fwd gently while holding the mouth open about half way, and ONLY if the gills weren't moving properly on there own, he explained ( by then the obvious) that especially in warmer water temps the stress & fatigue factor, and by supporting the belly area ( most of the fishes weight ) and moving its tail like that stimulates the fishes natural swim habits, the mouth opened half way while slowly pushing forward ( again only if needed and never backwards) it stimulates the gills moving at the speed they should be, So again awesome fish, thanks for releasing our resources, and next time walk out a lil deeper and support there body's because she needs it after just losing a epic battle to you !!!!

Congrats on the fish and the healthy release. I've been fortunate this season to have fished countless days/nights during the epic fishing the last couple months. So glad to see the care you took in reviving the fish and ensuring it was ready before the release. I've seen way way to many dead floating bass the last month or so because of people not real sing the fish properly or keeping the fish out of the water to long for photos. I wish there more more fisherman like yourself who appreciates and respects the species enough to take the care and time in letting the fish go..... and don't even get me started with the countless fish I've seen killed just to show off and post on Facebook.

striped bass are not a healthy fishery. they're hugely pressured. for every guy who can catch and release a fish like this there are probably 2-3 at that canal who hook one and leave gear in its mouth or keep it out of the water for 5 mins taking pictures and send it out belly up. i swam out to a 35 lb fish in the waves on cape anne after two older guys botched a release. i can't say i expected dudes that age to go swimming for a fish in big waves, but they did not have the urgency you would like to see with a fish that is 10-15 years old and produces millions of eggs every year. the young guys in the areas generally do. almost all catch and release, almost always limiting the time out of the water.

Stripe Bass at the cape is one of the dream trips. I'm from the Cleveland area so big walleye, smallmouth and the steelhead run is the best I've got. A few good musky lakes as well but no good blue or flathead waters. There's a reservoir near me that used to stock stripers and the state record came from there. Had to be pushing 40 pounds which is nuts for a landlocked striper in a relatively small body of water. They're gone now, probably hasn't produced one in over a decade. I remember when I was a kid and saw about a 30 pounder swim by

@lukkyluciano
@lukkyluciano 6 лет назад
It wasnt from recreational anglers taking 2 home.....the limits are unchanged where I fish. Limits are adjusted for various reasons...A storm rolls in while they are spawning and it's a bad year for fry, too many hooked during dog days of summer, a chemical spill in a river, etc. And it isnt anywhere near an exact science, they are guessing. You arent counting in a lake. Striper are in no danger and no fisherman should feel bad about taking a big fish home. Like largemouth, catch and release has been over emphasized with striper and a lot of other species. You will never see another 20lb largemouth in their native range, there are simply too many of them in 99.9% of the bodies of water. You have to go to California or Japan to even possibly see a 20. Where largemouth dont belong. Other species like walleye, perch, etc we do take too many home.

FISHING IS THE ONLY TIME IT'S LEGAL TO JAM A SPIKE THROUGH THE MOUTH OF AN ANIMAL AND DRAG IT AROUND. Do that to a dog or cat in your neighborhood and you'd go to jail. Strange double legal standard.

Interesting point B-) Even if someone seen you doing that to any other random animal it'd be all hell to pay.

Interesting perspective, but fishing is a form of hunting. At least fish have a fighting chance of being released relatively unharmed, whereas hunting land animals like elk, deer, bear, moose, etc etc do not. You can't bait a bear, shoot it in the mouth and then decide to throw it back into the forest to try again. The comparison to hunting domesticated animals like dogs and cats is apples to oranges.

@@jasras5003 Fish are released "relatively unharmed"? Again, spike through the mouth and flesh, with blood flowing. That's injury to the fish with alot of severe pain involved. Fish mouths are so sentient they choose pebble sizes with their lips when building nests. Hunting land animals is also a double legal standard. Almost without exception animals don't die immediately and they feel excruciating pain when shot with a bullet. You'd get jail time if you did that to an animal in your neighborhood, or to your dog if you decided you didn't want it anymore. Both hunting and fishing are done without the same conscience that has given us laws protecting animals where we live. Even abattoirs are required by law to make animal death immediate and completely pain free. Electric shock used to kill the meat we eat is as fast as nerve impulses and so when animals are shocked to death in abattoirs the pain never reaches the parietal lobe of the animal's brain and it never registers the pain. This is required by law so animals don't suffer, but the law continues to allow hunters and fisherman to do what is actually torture of animals. Strange double legal standard.

@@drServitis Again, a fighting chance at surviving after a catch and release. That's my main point, i.e. most of them get to live another day. I get it, you like fish. May I ask what you eat to survive? Just curious. I hope you're at least vegan. The veggies you eat, millions of rodents and bugs die so you can eat your kale salad (btw I love kale). I hope you sleep well at night knowing that those pretty lady bugs are slaughtered for your greens.

10 min of talking is a fact, nothing to be with education or not. Just an advice to other viewers which may expect to see action from minute one.
