do a video on how to paddle out in drifty overhead beachbreaks on short period swells when the current pulls you away from the channel/rip; probably the most irritating thing i’ve encountered in surfing.
Good video mate! Although I've just invested in a fish after 6 years on a shortboard and I think it's definitely more challenging on steep waves but the whole style is just different. Couldn't recommend enough to people who haven't used a fish because it's a totally different way to surf.
I’m a beginner (looking for my first personal board) and I’m debating the fish board option. The only place I would generally surf has small to medium surf. I’m 135 pounds and about 5’9”. I’m still pretty inexperienced but I wanna try and progress as fast as I possibly could without rushing it. That’s just simply due to the fact that I live a HECTIC life. I plan on kind of growing into it too so I may end up quite a bit bigger with my first board too. Any recommendations? I’m really just looking for something to just kind of mess around on. I don’t wanna get a softie, but a longboard doesn’t sound like it’s for me either. If I don’t get a fish board I would get a long short board or a short long board. I really just don’t know.
I had been on a large board for awhile and struggled. After watching your video I got a 6’3 fish. My surfing has taken off. Longboards don’t fit well in small curly beach breaks for me. Also they ruined my pop up because they are too floaty and often race ahead of the wave face. I have a PU fish and it pauses in the lip for just a half second before taking the drop. This is pop up time and it stays in the pocket. It’s not long enough to catch the nose like my longer boards on steeper waves. Great advice thanks!
Everyone starting out, should do longboard for, at least a year (same applies as an "on and off mode" for more Intermediate/advanced surfers too 😉) Better wave reading, better lines and overall better style 👌🏻 Then, maybe consider mid-lengths and hybrids shortboards before performance shortboards. Enjoy the best fun of your life while surfing🤙🏻 Yeww
i bet the volume on the fish is about the same on his shortboard actually. Just less rocker, bigger tail and more planning surface. but I will let him answer
I struggle with paddling fitness, hence the reason after 2 waves I jump on a bodyboard and catch more waves. I guess it's completely different feeling bodyboarding compared to surfing, but my legs are much stronger. Any tips to improve paddling strength?
I've surfed my whole life and have a few different boards but my go to is a fish! super fun and fast! and you can get some rad turns on it! I highly recommend it for all levels!
Forty liters for a beginner. Sound frustrating I would say. But after a week or a couple of with an easier stick, sure. I'm 53, experience about 160 days and I have 46 and 52,5 liters fishes.
Good video! One question though,I've been riding a foam board for at least a year now and I'm thinking of getting a new board.I can turn both ways and kick out sometimes,do you think I should get a fish or something completley different?
I always appreciate your info! I’m in a slump currently and find that i need to make an adjustment to my surfing, I’m 48 now and have been surfing since 1987. Starting to feel less paddling strength, current board is the surftech thumb drive at 36 liters. Maybe I should look for something around 40 liters? I gotta get stoked again
Is there a formula for the volume a surfboard should be given a certain height/weight? And is it different when choosing a normal vs a fish board? I'm 1.75m, 76kg. Beginner surfer (can pop on a fun board but not much else). You ddidn't mention funboards - what are your thoughts on them for beginners? Would you recommend I try a fish? What size/volume? Cheers mate!!
If your an advanced level surfer get a board that's about one liter of volume for every 5-6 pounds that you weigh. If you're less advanced I'd go 3-4 pounds per liter. But it does also make a big difference how the board is foiled (ie WHERE the shaper placed the foam) and also how flat the rocker is. Flatter boards will paddle faster but not do as well in steeper/bigger surf. Rail shape is also a factor, rounder rails are more forgiving and more stable (can be good for beginners) but a thinner rail will turn more aggressively and be more responsive.
@@1caoboi1 thanks. I'm not an advanced surfer... Currently surfing a 7'6" mini mal, it's quite fun. The difference between 3 pounds per litre (41 litres in my case) and 4 pounds (55 litres) is quite big, I guess I might have to try some boards and see. Also thanks for the explanation about the rocker and rails shape, very useful 🙂
i see you guys with plenty of... something on your lips and sometimes on your face. Is it sun block? And whatever it is. Do I need sun block if I surf on winter?
Australian sun is very intense so definitely wearing it on our faces however also ensuring we optimise exposure elsewhere for healthy vitamin D production. It depends where you are
I am an intermediate surfer, thinking about fish but worried about nose diving in steep medium size waves. Thus, do you think a fish would hold up in medium size steep waves that break fast?
I’ve been surfing for 6 months and I usually rent a minimal because that’s what’s available. The shaper suggested a fish or a minimal. I want something I can have for years and will still be fun to progress on but isn’t too steep a learning curve. Would a fish work for me? I’m worried about getting too short a board and not catching any waves 🌊
Hey I'm beginner/intermediate I was looking at getting a softech kyuss fish. It's 5'8 and 47L volume. I'm 5'11 and under 70 kg. I am sure it would have plenty of volume but do you think the size could be an issue as I am coming off a much larger board
Hello Kale, what do you think of these 7,2 fun boards, (47.2 litres). Mines a British made brand called Torq. I usually just go the wave pool near me in Bristol. I find I don’t get a lot of turning out of it. I’m up every time and I’m around 88kg. I have videos I could send. I’m just at a Plateau really. Im guessing time for a fish or a twin fin?
I just bought a retro fish from clayton and the salesperson said "don't put a traction pad on it advanced surfers will make fun of you", but I feel pretty comfortable on back tractionpads so I don't know what to do
Great vid but i would say more speed off of the lip on a thruster compared to a twinie? not that convinced as a twinfin has less resistance in the water = more speed yes there will be more control on the thruster thou and you going to need it , but 40l for a beginner mmm there going to struggle period unless there a grom, and also there out all times in the week , most are weekend warriors at best not to mention they have yet to built up the fundamentals of wave judgment not to mention the lack of catch part there used to from there bigger board they will end up frustrated fast ,fishes are inherently very fast on good waves( over a decade riding on a 42l 6f2 fish / 40l ) personally it should go longboard/soft/mal > mid-length performance board / egg /mini-Simmons /fish > large shortboard or shortboard > but hey each to there own.
i’m an intermediate surfer learning how to do bigger carves, off the lips, and cutbacks, and when people always ask me for a beginner board i usually just say like a fun board. Y would u recommend a fish over like a fun board
I am new to the surfing world but been a few times now and ready for a shortboard but don't know what a good size is suitable... seems to be a lot different than when picking out a snowboard. For reference am 5ft 7 and weigh 160lbs. and not sure what height/vol board too get
Hi Kale, do you think the wraptor would be still a good call for avarage 2-6 Mediterranean waves? It will replace a Chilli red Peppa at 31, 5 lt. I did checked your best boards video, and was nice, but being Jr easy to order in Europe and still cheaper than others, I m really interested in this, the redux, and the step/second cousin for better waves(travel board. Thank s
Kale , I originally had a 6”8 McCoy surfboard , after years of stopping surfing have started again and the surfing bug , I brought a SF3 fidh board TS , and found I was struggling to catch waves and being 120 kilos , I also now brought a Larger McCoy 7”8 60 litres and struggling to catch waves ... I noticed you love the foam boards and are they easier to catch small waves as of late in the south coast swells and South Maroubra
Just to note , notice how he has larger fins this is a major benefactor when progressing from a longboard, if your finding your sticks not working for you upgrade your fins before going out and swapping out your board , smaller fins on twin fins = silly speed!!! riding 6.4 fish for 9 years also fishs are awesome!! but as doudogg states, super challenging on steep waves , crack your thruster / flying carpet out , great success also making fins and adding larger fins to the 7ft carpet its like riding the fish but feels like a mal its two x large fins on the outside shaped to 6.25" height pick your sweep and a standard m5/g5 center fin its a right barrel bunny.
What would be a good size fish for someone who is 175cm and 77kg who’s been longboarding for a long time? The waves in my area are usually mushy and small but I’d like to switch over to something I can learn more intermediate tricks on
Looks like the blue fish had one of tail pins crease/break and then repaired. Seems like more than few of fish shapes w/ 4-5-6 inch deep swallow will do that. Did it break up or down? Looks like up just like all the others I have seen fail.
Hey man thanks for the vid, I’m having trouble on picking which one to pick but I’m an beginner/intermediate that’s swapping a softie for either one. I just want to be able to duck dive and paddle out quicker
As a beginner surfer ready to transition away from the 9+ longboard, I'm sold on the fish but can you do a video on riding a mini simmons and if you think it is appropriate for beginners.
What dimensions would you advise for a 5'10" - 200lb intermediate surfer. I used to be advanced, but haven't been surfing as much as I did when younger.
Hi! Great vídeos!😁 What is a good fishboard size for a beginner-intermediate surfer transitioning from a 7.7 softboard? Im 184 cm 75kg Thnks in advance!
Hey that describes me exactly, and im really happy with my 6'8" super fish ~ 42L. Super nimble for its size and volume, but easy to catch waves. Only draw back its only borderline duck divable. Its the 7S Superfish XL. Ill grant it aint the prettiest board, but super versatile - I love it.
Can you duck dive a longer fish? I'm a 5'10, 160 lbs and I'd like to try a longer fish and would love to be able to duckdive (can't dive my longboard). What's the longest fish you could duck dive? Thanks for the great videos!
what size board did you end up getting and how did it work out for you? i'm the same weight as you and was looking at getting a 55L 6'6" fish. i'm a beginnner
Sorry but I do not agree with you there are a lot of us out here that do not do snap turns and roundhouse cutbacks or huge floaters I've b even surfing for 59 years on a single fin longboard and am still stoked and can do most all I want on it
I'm 75kg and looking to get a 6'2-6'4 fish board. what volume is recommended. (I'll be a beginner but i'm an advanced snowboarder and skater so I want to skip the longboards and get into shortboards) I've researched and am thinking around 35-40L of volume. btw i have tried a 6'1 shortboard and could barely pop up onto it it just sank!
@@HowtoRip That's really interesting as I thought your shortboard and fish would have the same volume except your shortboard would be around 6'. For yourself, what are your thoughts on a 6' 27 liter or 32 liter shortboard? How would those compare to your 5'6" 27 liter shortboard?
@@HowtoRip A little contradictory as you explain the fish suits smaller waves better. Two different boards, so why surf both with the same progressive style? My point being that the video should point out that the fish is better for having a more relaxed approach to the wave and requires less work than a shortboard. Something that should've been reflected in your demonstration. Instead you're hacking the shit out of the fish and actually making it look like more work than the shortboard. Just some honest feedback. Nevertheless, very informative and looking forward to more content.
Kale love your vids...however I think a wide high volume thruster is better for learners. The thruster has better control and grip than quads or twins. It also pivots more and doesn't need to be nursed the way fishy type boards with twins and quads do.....I have always thought if you can't drift on thruster you shouldn't be riding twins or quads they are too hard to control for learners and often won't go in the direction they are pointed.....sorry to be nitpicky as normally your vids are great for learners. Best wishes.
Wow I’ve spent so long riding longer boards just cuz I see myself as a kook and figured shorter boards weren’t for my skill level. I’d love to start trying some more board shapes. Living in Canada is frustrating for surfing😅
I love surfing, but i don’t live near the ocean and sometimes when i go to surf after i haven’t surfed in a while, i get really rusty😂 is there any tips for me?
I'm the same, what I feel helps is exercising the muscles needed for the pop up and because pop'in up is a skill just getting an old board and using it to practice pop'in up on, swimming also helps.
