Although our Armed Forces are relatively small compared to many nations, I'm particularly proud of our Canadian Maritime Rescue Mission, who demonstrate incredible bravery and skill in saving the lives of all those in peril in our coastal seas, regardless of weather.

That was a hell of a rescue. I have deep respect for the search and rescue team.

I have so much respect for search and rescue teams.

The ship was later towed to Newfoundland and then sold and renamed Camilla Desgagnés by its new Canadian owners. In 2005 she suffered a fire off New York but was repaired and put back into service. In 2008 she made history when she became the first commercial cargo ship to transit the Northwest passage. She's still in service today.

I'm sitting in my recliner at 5:30 in the morning watching this rescue attempt. Can't help but think to when I used to service the oil rigs in the gulf of mexice. All the safety training I had taken over the years as safety is the biggest concern of the offshore industry. I was certified in about everything needed to survive but you realize all that training and your still at the mercy of the weather. A very bleak and sobbering thought. Nothing but my deepest respect for all those involved.

I just wanted to give some respect and props to all the rescue Coast Guard and Army rescue officers out there. Life is precious and those that put others before themselves are heroes thank you for your sacrifice

I was a Firefighter for 4 years. I know it is different, but I can relate to what these rescuers were going through. They are likely more nervous and scared than the passengers themselves. The pilot then makes the choice to keep going. This is actually textbook play by him. You risk big, for big reward only (which it was). Absolute respect to not only the pilot, the rescuers, but also the captain of that ship. He probably did have one last smoke.

Even though the ship didn’t sink and it’s funny in retrospect....props to everyone here being prepared with suits, etc, and calling it before things got fatal. So many times people try to stick it out and end up paying for it. Best decision with the knowledge they had, and an absolutely incredible testament to the skill of the rescue crew.

And the Camilla is still in service ‘till this day despite that. A true testament of her and her crew will to survive. Hats off to them.

That chopper is an animal. Whoever made that machine is an absolute genius. You need a machine that will stretch its limits and keep you in the air. I don’t know if most people understand how incredible that was.

The ship didn't even sink after all of this. It survived the storm, with a healthy list to port, but was eventually tugged back to St. John's port and salvaged.

Pilots are the best I have ever watched, very calm, intelligent, brave, determined and deciplained. Best ever.

These shows highlight just how amazing search and rescue crews are. They're crazy brave and indispensable. I have so much respect for all of them, regardless of the country they operate in. On a side note, I'm so glad they're talking in the metric system.

Hats off to the brave pilot & his experienced team who saved the souls from the approaching cyclonic sea in this terrific weather.

Always feels a little extra special to see an episode where the rescuers have Canada 🇨🇦 on the side of their vehicles. There are incredible heroic rescue workers in every nation, but I always feel extra proud when they are my countrymen.

props to the captain of the ship for having the whole crew get rescued before him...not so much for the crew itself for not insisting that the lady go first. im sure nowadays ppl might think thats an old school way of thinking but i cant help the way i feel and would like to believe that i would "walk the walk" if i ever found myself in this situation.

I as a survivor also of a ship that ran aground and eventually sunked, share that same terrifying feeling of fighting against death. Thank God we survived.

Update: The ship didnt sink that night and was towed to sheltered waters on the Newfoundland coast before being moved to St. John's for delivery to her owners.

I'm glad to see this rescue recieve proper credit. The absolutely superb airmanship this crew executed is truly historical. From the pilots, the rescue swimmers, and engineers to the maintainers of the helicopter, this TEAM of exemplary individuals demonstrated just how vital unit cohesion & Just what team work can achieve. The Captain of the vessel made a decision I personally hope I never have to make. Personally having a significant aviation + Maritime background, At the end of the day, He made the right decision. No loss of human life, not even an injury. I am curious to the fate of the vessel? I'm going to look into that. Absolutely remarkable feat of aviation skill that cannot be overstated!!

The engine failure was caused by a poor maintenance.

Amazing technology and crew on that helicopter. Crazy piloting skills with that amount of disastrous variables.

The Major and Captain are truly heroic. The Ships Captain cared for his crew he acted to perfection.

Those helicopter rescue guys are hero's. You need massive balls to fly a helicopter into an incoming storm, do a never been done before oil rig landing, refuel at sea, have instruments go wrong and the rotary blades too,, be on a time limit, have darkness closing in , and a very short window in which to accomplish saving 16 peoples lives and the crew and all the equipment . Unbelievable. That is seriously Wow. Hats off to those superhero's. .

2003 salvage[edit] On May 1, 2002, Camilla was laid up in the port of Mariehamn, Finland. According to the Finnish investigation report, maintenance work on the ship was intended to be carried out during the lay-up, but did not actually take place. On December 31, 2002 the ship departed Mariehamn for Canada in ballast for a cargo of paper. During the sailing, it was noticed that the ship's fuel had been contaminated with water, requiring a transition to burning light oil, and that engine lubrication oil required continuous filtering. The exhaust valves of the main engine also saw attention many times during the trip. After loading her cargo in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, Canada, the ship left for England on January 19, 2003. On Jan 23rd 05.40z the main engine stopped at sea, causing a black out. The engine failed with alarms and was restarted several times each time with some increasingly worrying signs of disrepair. At 09.36z it was discovered that one of the crank shaft bearings was overheating with mechanical noise emerging from several of the cylinders. At 10.45z the engine was declared inoperative. The engineers initially set out to repair the engine, but the master's decision at 13.48z that the ship would be evacuated halted the work. A hurricane was closing in, the repairs would take up to 36 hours, and even in the best case the ship's propulsion would be limited. The ship was then at 46° 54,7’ N, 46° 50,9’ W, and rolling 30-40 degrees. The crew ate dinner, closed all the hatches and valves and prepared to leave the ship. The ship's Stork-Werkspoor engine type was deemed in the Finnish investigation report to be very sensitive to the quality of its lubrication oil owing to a design feature, and the type had also received a general design revision to the crank rod bearings and the connecting rods. The engine type was also known to collect sticky oily residue in the general crankshaft area even when carefully maintained. The engine on board the "Camilla" had both unrevised and revised parts installed, but the parts to fail were all of the unrevised design. The investigation board concluded that the most probable cause for the engine break down was imperfect lubrication of the main engine.[5] The imperfect lubrication was a result of several factors, as detailed in the full report.

I was badly injured on a deep sea trawler fishing off nort Norway and the weather was force 8 I can’t thank enough the Norwegian coastguard and the brave helicopter crew who picked me up and flew me to Tromso hospital

Some heroes come in a helicopter!! Outstanding job done. My deepest respect for this people who put themselves in great danger to save others. It give me some peace of mind watching this since my brother is a sailor. For generations my family were fishers and so many drowned at sea because this kind of equipment didn't exist, leaving so many women widow & children orphants. Thank you guys !!

i was in the Coast Guard and we took part in many rescues just like this in the Atlantic area. It's amazing how bad the ocean can get what with the waves coming from every direction and the wind smashing rain into your face. We worked with helicopters and they often dropped people onto our deck after plucking them from sure disaster. It's difficult to land someone when the sea is making the ship go up and down so fast and you can't judge the distance. The average person would last about 5 minutes in that 55 degree water before dying of shock. I knew of one guy who lasted 24 hours but he had a wet suit on and was holding on to a crab pot marker.

Mother nature is unbelievable. .makes that ship look like a toy in the middle of those waves.

This had to be one of the most heroic and amazing rescues in human history

ANY Coast Guard has one of the toughest, most dangerous jobs out there. When everyone else is running for safety, they are running into danger for people they don't even know. RESPECT

Having worked at sea I do wonder if they were maintaining the ship properly, also why they could not fly back to the rig where they refuelled. Well done to all involved.

My worst fear height and the deep sea. Those captains and rescuers got some f balls of steel. Kudos to those brave men out there. May God keep them safe whenever they try to do more rescue missions

When I was 17 yrs old about 70 yrs ago I worked on a coastal freighter from Quebec to Newfoundland in the winter. The weather was really rough as in the videos and I loved it. There was no standing holding a cup of anything. Fortunately we survived these trips and being naive I didn't give it a second thought. Some years later she hit some rocks in a storm, with crew rescued.

Job well done by the Cormorant crew!! Glad all crew were rescued!! I stumbled across this video ! Ironically, I was working on the Henry Goodrich oil rig when they landed to refuel. Never really heard much detail about the rescue on the rig. Very Interesting to get the ships end of the story!! What a monster the Cormorant was on the helideck compared to the S-92s we regularly fly offshore on. If I recall, they were pushing the limit of the rigs helideck due to the size and weight of helicopter . It was definitely a nasty storm that night!! Although I've seen worse on the Grand Banks!! 29 Meters (~100 feet) Pretty scary stuff!!

This ship, the Camilla Desgagnés was rescued by a tug boat and brought to St. John’s, Newfoundland 19 days after the rescue. It arrived at port and the cargo was safely unloaded. The boat is still in service to this day in Russia.
