Hello everyone! I know its been a while but we have finally got a go pro! In this video we fish the South Platte right in the heart of Denver Colorado. We look at the question of is this river trash, or is it a secret fishing stash!?
To everyone who is upset about my trout handling I truly appreciate all of your educational tips as I consider myself a bass fisherman over anything else and would love to improve my skills! With that being said please do not target me for "unexpectedly" catching a trout while I was smallmouth fishing! I was overcome with excitement and didn't even think about how I was gonna land this fish(i still cared much more then others) but when we look at the grand scheme of things and colorado fishing pages/facebook/RU-vid and what not I see MUCH worse trout handling then mine and not to mention the amount of people that gill fu#k a fish and try to release them! ALL FUTURE TROUT VIDEOS WILL HAVE A LANDING NET, thanks in advance
What a great explanation and thanks for taking the time to learn about trout handling. I cringe every time I see them hit the rocks like that. keep up the good work!
While I would agree you didn't handle the trout properly I appreciate that you were taking care toward the middle/end of the handling, you revived him enough before measuring and weighing to save him, otherwise he would have been toast so kudos! I fished trout all my life but I have switched over to bass, one of the main reasons was that I just hate how delicate trout are, I almost always use fly gear now to target them but this one nailed your treble crank, not much you can do but what you did. Great video!
Can you let me know the whereabouts cuz I'm from Old Colorado Denver and I want to fish off of the plat to so I would love to know the little cozy spot you found and where location please 🙏
You are the man, really appreciate the kind words brother I definitely will! I'm glad you found the channel again though that video is one of my favorites to this day haha I love the DSP!!
Tons of fish get flushed out of one of our Thornton water lakes into the Platte especially during the summer. Lots of smallmouth bass get flushed out some of them pretty big. I actually used to catch bows in the occasional Brown in the Platte during the 90s, nobody ever believed me.
Man thanks for the info brother I've heard a lot of people say that lakes flood into the Platte! & it's honestly one of those places nobody ever believes there's fish in, too bad for them🎣
Nice dude! I have always wondered why nobody around Denver has really made any fishing channels. Well your the first I have really came across. Subscribed my dude ill be watching.
Cause none of us fish like that were not all mountain folk who ski to work and hint and fish I grew up right around the way from here this place is dirty not a me where you'd want to fish at any way
Just found your channel. Loving the videos.I’m so excited to see some content from home! It looks like we frequent the same fishing spots. I hope to see you out there 🎣
Nice bud. I'm finally just watching this video. It's a good. I thought about fishing the platte many times as I pass it by on my way home from work. Now I just might give it a try some day. Thanks for video man
Contemplating moving to Colorado from Florida so I googled fishing videos. MUCH respect to how you treat the fish after you catch them bro. People don’t do that down here.
Thanks a lot man, im glad you found this channel! & i appreciate that comment, ive had some people even say I couldve handled them better haha so thanks for seeing it as some careful landing!
I had no idea the Platte had fish in there wow nice trout and bass surprised me I've been living in Denver my whole life and never once fished the Platte
Its definitely one of the best kept hidden gems in Colorado! Growing up I was always told it was trash, hopefully in the upcoming years we can clean it up!
That's awesome! I heard a lot of people say the South Platte was a trash river but they've been cleaning it up and a lot of people are catching big fish in there I'd like to fly fish it some time thanks for the video
Exactly! My whole life I was told the Platte was trash, but thats what really made me want to make this video!! I hope you've had some luck as well man!👍🎣
Heyy thanks brother! Sorry about the untimely reply, I've been super busy lately but I'm hoping to get down to the platte a few more times before the cool down!! 🎣
@@fishingcolorado no worries dude.. Nooo !! Just saying i know that's place cause i fishing there before but with out lucky 😔.. that's what it is bro.. 😜
Good video. I wouldn’t be sharing any of these spots though. I won’t share mine, because places get crowded fast. Some Call me an A hole because of it, and I’ll wear that on my sleeve if that’s the case. Lol. Nice catches.
Ifnyou dont wsnt the fish to die...quit smashing it into rocks . Dropping it. Taking it up on the bank to measure...etc. Take your pliers to rhe water . Good to net trout ..tend to the fish while in the net and still in the water.
Heyy Frank! Glad to have you around now my man🤜🤛 & oh yeah Tim's a killer fisher! Really glad you found this channel as well, I'm definitely around the Denver area a ton!
Such a double edged sword. Most fishermen dont want to voice their honey holes but its always good getting someone on some fish. I pulled some epic bows outta the river that runs off of Antero resevior. Right off of 24. Im super stoked for some late night catfishing late spring!!!
My secret to getting on catfish was to put some livers in a small plastic bucket and letting them sit in the sun for a few days. I would tie a line to the bucket and toss it in the water after poking some holes in the lid. Unfortunately, here in Colorado I think these cats are used to a different food source. Im gonna try some small live bluegill and crayfish when i head back out. Theres a spot in SW Denver that has some MONSTER cats so let me know if you want to join us one night this spring.
@@1v7Eddiemw4 right next to the skate park off of 20th & Platte Street. Some of the guys that fish there haven't had much luck the past couple of weeks, though...
Thanks so much for checking it out! I'm sorry to hear about that though man, I hope your luck has changed since then!! I've recently got back to it so im hoping to have some more content up real soon!!🎣
Nice man! I have been meaning to check out the Platte in Denver for years. It's 10 mins from my house so I should try it out. Use to catch huge carp in there as a kid
nice casts!! I am just learning the baitcaser reel but its so much fun. LOTS of birds nest so far but I bike the platte river all the time I always wondered if there were Bass in there. But what a beautiful rainbow you had! My name is Jess send any tips or tricks you have for me!!
Heyy Jess! Thanks for stopping by, as far as the baitcaster goes I would say something that really helps with bird nests is to always have the baitcaster on specific settings. I would put your left dial to 6 o'clock, and adjust your far right dial(not the drag) each time you change the bait as the size of the weight will vary! Tighten this dial to the max and then click the bail as if you were casting. No line should come out! Then slowly loosen the dial until your lure begins to lower naturally! Once you've done this your casting settings are set! Finally as far as the platte goes its an awesome place to fish but lately has been extremely grassy! I've been hoping it will wash away soon as most casts result in grass piles! I hope this all helps some but keep up it up Jess!🎣
I’m honestly gonna have to check the spot out I know exactly where that’s at i May see you one of these daysone of these days you got a new sub man great content keep the vids comeing
Thanks a lot my man!! I saw you said you had some luck too!! Now thats a biggun!! I might have to come back down to the Platte myself, to be honest I haven't been down since about the time I made this video!
Glad to have you here! I love the South Platte, & unfortunately I haven't had the best transportation but hopefully soon I can come down in cold season and hit some nice trout!!
Like your content brother just subscribed. Been hitting the water a lot been banging them out, could you leave bait type, lake, rods in description on next vid? Happy fishing
Yo what areas in Denver is that? I live down by 470 and Wadsworth... I've never been up near Denver to try it out. What do you think about trying around Santa Fe/85 down south?
@@fishingcolorado We have some good fishing spots scattered but in the river I've only seen Carp up this way. I'm going to try drifting my paddleboard up from Denver soon I think to see what I can find
Heyy there! Unfortunately I would give you this location but its been getting pounded recently by many people seeing this video, im hoping to let it cool off for a while but I would say the population of fish in the platte is high! If you find a deep pocket of water its worth a few casts!
Awesome, welcome! I've heard of carp in there so if you ask me I don't see why more fish couldn't be in there but I haven't personally fished it! Also if it's like chatfields spillway to the DSP it should have some fish that cherry creek also has!!
Unfortunately I don't wanna give exact details as this specific section of the river seems to get pounded ever since I posted this video! I will say though that if wherever you can find access to the Platte and a deep hole of water or even slow moving water that is about 3-4 deep its worth a few cast! Smallie population is surprising high down there
is that a Clozee sample in your intro? thats badass. Do you ever fish with other locals? I just started fishing and I would love to go out and fish with more people.
Honestly I'm not sure if its a Clozee sample, its been a while since I remember making it😂 i do fish with local sometimes though! I've been a little busy lately with work and finishing up my college summer semester but if you send me your email I'll hit you up and ask about your schedule man!
I appreciate you watching, I have actually heard this several times in the comments on this video & all I can say is that I don't typically trout fish & being that I was fishing for smallmouth bass with a huge crankbait why would I have my net? I would have never anticipated a trout to eat it and out of pure excitement I landed the fish, however I would say that if you join Facebook fishing groups such as Fishing Colorado or look at people catching fish on the app Fishbrain my fish handling is unfortunately better then 90% of the common fishing folks. Since this video I have purchased a net and in all of the trout specific fishing videos I have made over the past year I have used my net!
I am going to have to find some access to the platte around my neck of the woods. I know an irrigation pond that is fed by the platte river in my area and I have seen walleye make it up the river to the pond.
@@fishingcolorado I am in weld county and access could be a pain. I do have pictures of the walleye it was a dead one on the shore of the irrigation pond at one of the colleges in my area. I do know someone who fishes the platte downtown Denver and does pretty darn good.
@@yamahschector in my experience tough access means better fishing haha but definitely the Platte has a surprising strong population of fish! There has to be some down there!
@@fishingcolorado bro i hit the ponds over there yesterday and got some huge bass!! Near evans! Nice to finally be getting into the fish just 1 mile from home
I caught one of the small mouth out there exactly where you were but this one was a good 16.5 inches along with the few huge carp swimming threw from time to time couldn’t get that rainbow tho man .
Huh....interesting, did not know the Plat had Small Mouth, I live right on the Plat River and really only got Trout but yet I've only fly fished, but my boyfriend has been having an issue finding a place to go just to find at least Small Mouth... so might tell him to give it a try.
Surprisingly awesome place to fish! I have just recently finally got back out fishing and caught a few smallmouth on the platte! Haha I hope you guys have found some luck as well, if not now is the time🎣
Anything that swims in Chatfield also lives in the Platte. A lot of fish get washed into the river especially in the Spring and early Summer when they are releasing more water because of runoff. Rainbows, walleye, and smallies get washed into the river on a pretty regular basis.
A couple things to remember: 1) wet your hands before touching any species of fish. 2) don't slam the fish onto the rocks (get a net and keep em wet). 3) pinch your barbs.
Opinions are like assholes Pat. I will say Trout deserve to be treated this way but in the moment of excitement there was no way I was losing that fish.(also smallmouth fishing didn't expect it) If you watch other big "bass" fishing youtube channels LunkersTV, Lojo, JonB, AP, 1rod1reel, SB fishing, the list goes on nobody wets their hands when landing a bass, & typically no one uses pinched barbs unless they have to. So I do appreciate your opinion brother & in the future I would like to have a hand net for trout but I will continue to land bass the way everyone else does.
@@fishingcolorado I wouldn't say it's an opinion as much as best practice. In almost all of the channels you mentioned, they're "lipping" the bass and not flinging them onto rocks or handling their body. And no, you do not need to pinch your barbs but again, if there are trout in the water you're fishing, follow best practices. Any research you do will tell you to wet your hands to protect the outer mucus membrane on ANY fish. Cheers mate and good luck out there
Fish bow you want to fish These male Karen’s ruining a bunch of people and childrens childhood memories Some people fish and keep them all and eta them all Some people fish and let’s them go Neither is wrong nor breaking any law Some people are nerds and watch videos on the web all day so they think they are certified outdoorsman Lmao These goofys that come to the comments section and act like they’re a college teacher on fishing Making charts and graphs and labels all in a comment section smh Are the same people who talk shit under their breath when your walking up to the lake Then ask you “how’s it going buddy” “fishing good? You fish here often?” Lol I don’t spend thousand of dollars on bait and equipment and gas and park fees Tô catch and release and take phagg0T pics and post them like a woman I keep everything and fish to the laws Wet your hand before you handle a fish? Tf It’s going on the stronger or cooler regardless só make it make sense
Good vid, but, very poor trout handling. Please, don’t let them flop around on the rocks and shove them into the dirt and rocks if you’re going to release them. Keep em wet
Thank you brother! At this point you are the 100th person to tell me so, and just as I've said before I wasn't trout fishing and thus I didn't bring a net! Also since it was unexpected & i was in pure excitement and not wanting to lose the fish I just landed him however I could! I would say though that being in Facebook groups and fishing pages really makes me feel that my trout handling in this video isn't that bad, I see people killing fish almost every day and although I will say I should've brought a net, I treated that fish much better then others! All future trout fishing videos will have landing nets!! Lol At least I'm not a gillf$
Yeahh man down south a ways more! I would say though man that I know another good spot even further down Sheridan!! So honestly man if you find a deep slower flowing pocket close to home its probably worth a few casts!
Heyy man! Yeahh I would say near the Denver Bronco stadium is a good place to start, I've seen people catching at the stadium, behind Elitches, and even around the Trouts fly shop! Honestly if you find a deep pool that looks juicy along that stretch, odds are it is!!🤜🤛 I hope you come down and have some luck friend
We should link up sometime and fish man. I’m around that area testing out my baits all the time (Rocky Mountain baits) and I need people to fish with haha
Im from houston and been fishing all my life and been up here in denver for about a month now. I've gone fishing maybe 5 times and I've gotten skunked everytime. I've been throwing soft plastics and swimbaits like I usually do in texas but been coming up short lol. Would you say the fish up here hit more on hardbaits such as cranks?
Man I'm sorry to hear that brother, what I would say is that compared to Texas the lbs of fish per acre is a lot smaller so a bit less opportunity for bites! Also I feel like most bodies of water in Texas you could just fish and catch a bass but here its a lot of spot finding, & then I will literally have to just throw several different baits until I lock onto a pattern(which can literally change overnight, not sure if that happens in Texas) but I would say overall I've had equal success on hard baits and soft plastics! Best of luck though brother! If anything ice fishing seasons coming soon & its super cool!! 🧊🎣
@@juliannavarro7833 this is a good point as well! CPW app is a great way to check what particular species of fish are in your body of water!! Cold season means trout time😎🎣
Thanks for the video, I am new to fishing. Are there any access points you'd recommend for the Platte a bit north of Denver? Are you able to fish anywhere along the river?
I would say honestly if you have a day to fish and enjoy a little hike its worth a good walk down the platte to just simply look for spots! I really haven't explored too much but I know 2 spots, I would tell you this location however after telling a few people this spot has quickly became overcrowded, best of luck though!🎣
I personally believe it is a great spot! The population of fish is surprisingly high but you just have to find them! I would tell you more about this exact location but lately the spot has been rather crowded as this video has grown, i apologie but I'd say if you can find a deep slow flowing pocket its worth a few casts!
In this video I'm using my Abu Garcia- Black Max 7'0 Medium Heavy! As far as my backpack goes it is a tactical day pack of some sort that I purchased from big 5! I don't exactly know the model and unfortunately couldn't find any info but they have several models there!
So sorry about the untimely reply man, I would say honestly for one square Bill crank baits of course! I've also had good look on shallow diving jointed cranks that are in a craw color as there's a ton in the platte! Other then that I'd have a few gold spinners and a few silver spinners to trade off if its cloudy or sunny! I hope this helps some friend good luck
Hey man I love to fish im from iowa never actually trout fished before and I moved here in January been looking at alot of fishing spots lately wojld be awesome to link up and show me the roots around this state!
All different species of trout i also love to fish for crappie and walleye i also like to bass fish but my goal is a lake trout for sure but as of rn anything I just love to fish man
Yo bro did you go to alameda high? I think we played for all together? Love the content! I e been wanting to make a fishing channel as well would love to get together and wet some lines man! Maybe we can make some content together!
I did man! I definitely remember your name haha that would be dope though, maybe we could meet up at some point this summer but if I'm being honest I can't say when forsure when, hit me up at fishingcolorado303@yahoo.com or you might still have me on Facebook
@@fishingcolorado thats awesome man! everybody called me “Spanish”. I added you on Facebook. No worries man we can figure out a time. Tight lines brotha!
@@cbdn60 I honestly haven't started down that way, but personally I'd say the fish population is surprisingly high down there so if a stretch looks good your most likely right! I would say though I went to a new JUICY spot on the Platte but I could not find a smallie, all I got was a trout :/ im thinking they're moving to slower presentations, most likely a drop shot!!
if u were careful u wouldnt have dragged that trout up on the rocks. i would like to think more highly of fellow bass fisherman but they got alot to learn
That trout definitely could've been handled better my man, I unfortunately typically bass fish and never carry a net. This day I had no intention of a trout hitting a crank bait, and in my excitement I pulled him onto the rocks! Next time I'll have the net close by haha
