Fishing Eddies Under Bridges

In fluid dynamics, an eddy is the swirling of a fluid and the reverse current created when the fluid flows past an obstacle. In fishing, it's often the place you'll find dinner...

That sheepshead you caught at 6:30 is a mongo sized one. I'd love to fish Jupiter Inlet and the railroad bridge again. I miss the fishing since where I live they don't have fishing like that. Thanks for showing good fishing techniques to people who miss them. I used to fish for spots in places like where you're at. I miss the fresh fish that I'd catch all the time.

I can often save bass that have swallowed a worm hook by going in from the gills with thin needle-nose pliers. Once the hook is out through the gills, cut it off the line and pull the line back out of his mouth. It doesn't always work, but I think it is better than leaving the hook in it's throat.

I fished the sea plane basin near the Peter O Knight airport near Tampa in the 90's. Most of the fish would be on the larger size, don’t known why, but they were plentiful and with lot's of small crabs in the rocks for bait. I would not eat them myself but would either release or give them to people that wanted them to eat. I like Sheephead just not from the basin, to many people living aboard in a confined area. Good times! I just found your channel and subscribed and like your video’s. Enjoyable content, thanks.

I just found your videos recently. I really dig the style of your videos, especially how zen you are about fishing. Your methods are very pragmatic, and I really like the fact that you don't tell everybody that they need to spend large sums of money to enjoy fishing, and that even if you have a bad day fishing at least your on the water. Oh, and I'm also jealous that y'all have snook on your part of the coast.

Woohoo! Great job! That was a nice Sheepshead! Lived most of my life in the Daytona Beach area and fished the pilings around the bridges and docks all up and down the Intracoastal there. Great fishing. You are spot on about those little Fiddler crabs. The Sheepshead LOVE them. I used to take an oar and rub some of the barnacles off a pilling and drop a crab right down next to it. Drives 'em crazy. Keep your rod in your hand so you can feel a bite. They are notorious bait stealers, and are a delicious fish.

Great video. 2 things I would like to point out. We just got back from a trip where we caught Speckled Trout, Croaker, and Sheephead. We came home and had a fish fry. Everyone preferred the Sheephead over the other fried fillets. Also, Sheepshead feed on crustations. If you simply take a shovel, and use it to scrape those bridge posts under the water, you will create a Chum to attract the fish. If you watch other RU-vid videos, you will see them doing this. Give it a try. It should increase the number of fish you catch.

Hi! Over here we fish a lot at night for sheepshead on the docks.. I mainly use cut bait such as dead shrimp or even little squares of Bonito. Attach 2 leaders about 3 feet long each to a tiny swivel and to main line..depending on how much wind/current there is just put a little pinch lead above the tiny swivel! I usually catch 2 sheephead at a time! You should try it over there ;)

Hey man! I just recently found your channel, boy do I love it! I've watched most of your videos by now and love them all! I love what you're doing with the house boat as well! I've always fished a lot and you have inspired me to get a kayak sometime soon to fish out of. Being 18 I can't afford a boat, so it's perfect for me. I live in the northern part of Louisiana. The part that makes it better is that I actually plan on moving to Florida here before long so I'll be stoked to bring it down there. Anyways, long ramble over, I was wondering if you could do a video outlining all of the equipment you feel is vital to having a successful time on the water and a safe time on the water, what do you keep in your kayak, what tools you will never go without, basically your load out. Not so much focused on rods or bait, more like tools, ice chest, etc. I would love to see that video!
@richardfederico1672

Love your videos, great camera work and very informative! Learned a lot just looking at your kayak set-up. Yes you are right, always get bites when I fish behind bridge pilings, but lets not get everyone's hopes up too high. I fish the New York/ New Jersey ocean, bays, and inlets and this is my experience. Many of these spots are inland and well within reach of anyone with a pole, even fishermen on the banks can cast out to these pilings with ease. I mean they are bridges which tells you something about their proximity to land and population densities. Anyway, long story short, many (not all) of these spots are over fished and can actually be frustrating because you will have your bait constantly stolen by bait fish or be forever pulling your hooks out of the mouths of undersized fish. That said, these spots are great for teaching children how to get the feel for fishing as they provide constant action and then ...who knows? there is always the possibility a big one is down there after all!

Magnesium hooks dissolve in approx 6 wks...so I was told by a guide. He uses them for tarpon. Every use the trick placing fiddlers in a mason jar lowering jar next to pilling, then lay your crab next tojar and bang! You have caught a very frustrated sheepie! Learned this trick under the old John's Pass bridge in the 60's from an old guy that slayed huge sheepshead. I have moved on from fishing for sheepshead. too many other non porgy type fish to feast in.

We always scraped pilons with square shovel the barnacles are great chum and bring up the big sheephead..the challenge to catching them is they hit so fast..we would fish on slack tide ..using a guppy rig with multiple hooks and use fiddler crabs..holding bait right next to pilons..best wayis touse countdown method and set hook..since otherwise they steal your bait...eua galley bridge in melbourne is phenominal sheephead fishing
