Winter is the perfect time to get out and chase big Snapper in close with the tried and true, Bait & Burley, method.
With a rare lunar eclipse creating the first 'blood moon' in 40 years we are heading out West armed with some awesome strayline sets from Daiwa and a ‪@yeticoolers‬ cooler loaded with Southern Baits to see how this crazy lunar activity affects the fishing. What we encountered was better than I could have ever hoped for!
Check out the full range of Daiwa Strayline combos, perfect for you winter fishing adventures, at your local Hunting & Fishing NZ store.

Oarsum. Nothing better than watching a great session over a couple of glasses of red with a dodgy weekend wx forecast. Thanks for uploading.

Great stuff. Always wondered if the Minnkota noise would put off snapper on burley sessions.

I know everyone is going to hate on this comment but when are we as fisherman going to acknowledge the fact that we are funding the commercial fishing industry in targeting species such as squid, pilchard and bonito, essentially stealing food from other fish to catch fish. As you said on this video fresh is best so why take out a giant chillibin full of commercially caught bait. I get that you are making a video and want to catch as many fish as possible and well done on that, but at the end of the day the real reason most of us fish in NZ is to catch a feed its not to put a hook in as many snapper as possible. It would be great to see some of our top fishing personalities such as yourself lead the way in showing us all how easy it is to catch a good feed of fish with out buying $200 worth of bait and burly and catching 20 plus fish but only keeping 3 or 4. I apologies for putting criticism on your video as this message is for all making fishing content out there, and I do appreciate that you do use diverse methods to catch your fish.

Thanks for taking the time to comment mate, I can tell your criticism is coming from a place of genuine concern for the ocean so will happily take the time to respond. In this particular instance I took a big selection of bait and gear so as to maximise my chances of success. As I mentioned in the video in certain circumstances fresh bait can be the difference but this is not always the case. I was set up for straylining, softbaiting, ledger rig fishing in 50+ meters of water and even had a couple of electrics onboard incase we decided some deep drops was a better option. Fresh bait isn't always an option and in fact a lot of the time commercial baits are more effective. The beauty of having a high quality cooler onboard is that I can take a big selection of baits, give myself a number of options (especially when I'm trying to create content), and at the end of the idea return the still frozen bait to my freezer in great condition & ready for another adventure. As you say, we are very lucky in NZ to often have the opportunity to easily catch a few fish for a feed. Whilst being able to catch fish for food is a priveledge I do not take lightly, I also have no problem admitting that a big part of why I go fishing is the catch and release aspect. I will never release I fish that I don't think has an extremely good chance of survival so when I'm fishing in this situation - shallow water & short fights, I am comfortable taking the opportunity to release as many fish as possible.
