Great video! Thanks for sharing. I’m visiting my bro in law from uk in Titirangi in March any advice of west coast spots to try please. That rock spot looks a bit dangerous but great fishing. Good tip on the small baits! Cheers!
The whole coast is dangerous, I'd only recommend spots when the swell is lower than one meter. And then anywhere can be good. unless swell is low, I'd say stick to the Manukau harbour, should be fishing well around that time of year. Whatipu and little Huia have been producing good kingfish activity recently.
awesome video man. those crabs can really dig fast into the sand. funny how you mentioned the tope shark at the start cause there has been many of them at the west coast this year. that rock ledge is so nasty with those swells. good catch on those trevs! a good sign that there are many in the west now. 2nd day's swell was definitely more intense as.
Yeah lots of Topes of late, but slowly being replaced by Bronzies. The paddle crabs are killer baits for Doggies. Had a few good size ones of them lately, but always too dark for Gopro footage.
@@DarkmoonAngler ah right. ive tried using prawns for them but they always seem to go for the mullet bait haha lots of snappers caught off that ledge too. hope more bigger snappers will turn up on the west beach
Very dangerous spot... I grew up fishing that area so like many of the locals I'm a lot more attune to the do's and don'ts of that environment. But even the very experienced can get into trouble at that spot.
Awesome to see 20kg line😀 I'm a mono man used to use suffix but they stopped importing it so am using black magic not as good when snagged it snaps now and again midline can be annoying. Your vids are pretty cool big waves are quite the challenge I've only east coast fished in those conditions around 5-7ft any bigger and the spots not flushable have caught some good fish and lost more than landed but worth it when you land one😀
@@slowjocrow6451 hey man where abouts you gunna start your surfcasting? If your using a surfcaster ID recommend 25-30pound mono. You could use braid 40 pound but not mono 40 pound to hard to get a long cat off the beach . Are you beach fishing or rock fishing? 🎣🎣
@@musicmadantidevil3688 I'm in central Auckland, been trying around Takapuna reefs and might try Cornwallis next. I've been using 20kg mono and still get occasional snap offs while casting with 4oz sinker. Maybe need to change my line more often. Mainly rock or wharf fishing because the nearby beaches all have some nice reef/rocks to go out on. Caught a baby hammer-head in Takapuna last month!
@@slowjocrow6451 if wharf fishing you should try find a 7ft- 8ft rod you need something with lifting power maybe 15kg- 24kg. As for nylon look for suffix or black magic. Don't just get the people at the shop to put on line cos it'll be crap mostlikely. What rod and reel have you got?
Wow this is one of the first vids I’ve seen of yours and it’s super good. Shame you dropped the first big snapper but you stocked up on trevs. Glad to see you are very careful about waves at your spot. Could take life jackets as a back up too. Great upload enjoyed a lot
Cheers mate. we did consider life jackets, but figured best option would be to swim out as fast as possible from the breaking waves. life jackets would create a lot of drag in the water and inhibit ones ability to dive under a wave. the waves and rocks will kill quicker than lack of buoyancy in those circumstances.
@@DarkmoonAngler thanks mate. Keen to get out there with you! Really enjoying all your content you've put out! Subscribed and getting the whole crew to follow you too. Keep up the great work!
I shouldn't really give away access to spots. Some find it offensive. Best to get out there and explore. more fun that way. There are plenty of spots out there. Talking to the locals is often a good start.
@@vanesaeti475 yeah Piha. Its too dangerous most days and wouldn't recommend spot to anyone based on that. but there are the odd little periods of low swell and off shore winds if you can time it right...
Its a bit of a local secret so can't share too much sorry, but if you look hard you will find it. low and high tide fishing and both are equally dangerous... as is the short cliff walk in.
Love your videos mate, real down n dirty kiwi landbased fishing the way it should be! Just wondering what model and length of saltist rod you use, is it the sj/bw model?
Cheers mate. Rod reads SALTIST BW 962HFS-AO. 9'6 2 piece. great action but... have had to replace 5/8 line guides so far, the reel seat struggles with weight of Fin-nor real and glue holding butt on gave way early on. But a fun rod to use and can really send a bait/lure.
@@DarkmoonAngler Cheers for the reply mate, I am looking at getting the same rod and considering the more expensive hyper model. I'll be using with a 6500 size reel. I have a saltist st 802xh for bigger lures etc but it's a bit of a broomstick. I guess rods do take a beating on the rocks so maybe better to go the cheaper option ;)
@@DarkmoonAngler Did you replace the guides yourself? If so, would be cool to see a video about it. Need to replace one of mine and looking for some tips
@@slowjocrow6451 yeah i do my own and the repairs last for decades, but they don't have a professional looking finish. I just use layers of cotton to bind them on and then seal with nail polish. I also keep all the eyes from old rods in a box for spare parts. Only issue I have had is with the tip eye gluing onto carbon fibre.
Yeah they are scary....lol. Why we didn't night fish there. Yeah life jackets could get you in trouble there. Need to swim out as fast as possible from rocks and get under those big waves if you did end up in the drink.
