WATCH PART 4: (CATCHING MORE): • Kayak Fishing: Invasiv...
In part 1 of this 4-part series, I'm chasing the invasive, ferocious and controversial Northern snakehead in Virginia. These fish were introduced into the U.S. from North Korea and China, and many believe they are going to destroy the local waterways of Virginia and Maryland. Others aren't so sure. Yet the witch hunt for these fish remains, with many insisting that every specimen be killed no matter what.
In this series, I'll be trying to get to the bottom of the snakehead debate, starting off fishing for them with Haleigh Kilby and Jonathan Leavitt in this episode.
Then we'll cook a couple up in episode 2 (spoiler: they are DELICIOUS) before joining John Odenkirk, a biologist with the Virginia Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries, on a shocking trip to learn more about the species and how biologists study invasive species in episode 3. Finally, we'll head back out to chase these fish with all the knowledge we've gained to see if we can land a monster.

Im excited youre doing this series! I actually went to high school in Stafford, VA and in my oceanography class, my teacher got a license and he went out and caught us a snakehead to keep in the tank in the classroom. I was in charge of keeping the tank, so I got to work very closely with them and feed him live goldfish. The first lesson we learned is that theyre lungfish, and actually have to breathe air to survive. The first night we had him, we came in the next morning and he was halfway across the classroom. We put a brick on top of his tank after that.

I was born and raised in CentralAsia , where snakeheads was everywhere. That fish is so hardy , so it can survive in very shallow puddles with outside temperature of 110°. Also it can crawl from puddle to puddle. It also hisses when you catch it. Taste is very good! For my opinion:) But meat is very dark and hard to skin it . Normally we peel it with pliers like a sock 🧦 Very invasive! Protect its fry in shallow warm waters. Not only protect but let the fry some kind of graze around. Here is your potato 🥔

Yep, in the 3rd episode of this series we learn a lot about the fish with a biologist that studies them here in the US. Very interesting fish.

I've been fishing for these for years and learned a lot about them. The four count hook set is pretty much mandatory when hooking these guys because they suck the bait in instead of bite it. Their mouths are much bonier as well. Getting that hook set strategy in your mind is almost impossible because when they strike its basically and instant reaction just to set the hook. They are stupid fast. I find fishing for them in late April through may the best because the vegetation is not grown in yet and you can spot them much easier. Also in May the fish are full of roe which makes em that much bigger so most fish that would normally be 8-9 pounds are more like 10-11. Once July comes around its much harder to find and catch them, at least where I fish. Once the water gets hot, the lily pads and grass grows in, its almost impossible to find them. They become very sluggish.

Mr. Field's, I've not even watched the video yet but wanted to comment anyway! I'm sure its a great video. I ate this fish during a trip to Vietnam. By far one of the best fish I've ever eaten. My guide took me to a restaurant way back in the mountains and rocks where they raised them in 5-7 ponds. I fished for them also from the bank, but only got a few bites. Stay safe and keep making videos.....Rangers... Lead the Way!

Thats where I grew up. You could basically throw a rock in Aquia Harbors channels and hit a snake head. The bass and cat and snake heads all keep each other in check taking turns eating each other. I fished those waters all of my teens and there were never a shortage of the native fish.

Been looking at your videos and they bring back memories of when I use to fish (became just impatient enough to stop). Which resulted in a recommendation/question. Have you considered going to great lakes to fish for Northern Pikes and/or Walleyes (not seen a video where you do yet, side note they like leaches) ? Walleyes are tasty and if you catch a small one consider using it for a bait-fish to catch monster Pikes (not sure if legal). If you fish in shallow water for pikes, duckling lures should get ya a pike.

Nice! New sub bro bro. The snakehead definitely is a fierce predator and in my experience they out compete bass in small ecosystems. I recently caught my first snakehead in a small pond on the Eastern Shore, MD after landing a decent bass that was super skinny (putting the video out this week). The snakeheads were also thick, full bodied bullies. First thing I did was clip it’s gill plates and bleed it out... no issues and they taste delicious! Congrats and looking forward to following you journey... definitely stop by the Chesapeake Bay and experience “Rock”tober

Rob, you gonna need some fish grips, pliers, and a tee ball bat next time you fish for snakeheads. I watch a video from Florida where they Heidi them in the air and whacked them before putting them in the boat. In some states your not allowed to release them. Nice video.

I don’t believe that was the same species. Likely a bowfin. Snakehead have not been found in Champlain or New York, and if you did actually catch one, you should report it. That would be EXTREMELY serious. But I’m guessing it was a bowfin, which are native to the US and routinely mistaken for snakeheads.

I'm a life long fisherman & I've fished nearly the entire length of the Potomac from the mouth at the Chesapeake Bay to way way up the upper Potomac. But this dude wore me right out with the mega overdose of gnarly bro Cali surfer dude -- bro bro bro bro & fuckin gnarly everything. Jeeeezzzzz man. That shit is really laughably ridiculously annoying to us east coast guys.

Using the term "witch hunt" Implies that you think this invasive species is being persecuted unfairly, is that your view?
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 6 лет назад
I think in 99% of cases, it is being persecuted without adequate knowledge or understanding. Wait for episode 4 to hear my final verdict. In episode 3 we hear the opinion of the lead biologist tasked with investigating the species in for the Virginia Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries.
@johnwayne6647
@johnwayne6647 5 лет назад
Northern snake heads should all be killed off ,they are invasive and threaten the native ecosystem and food chain ,releasing back any invasive species back into the water is ignorant .These snakeheads if they continue to travel up the coast could eliminate Atlantic salmon ,trout and other native species .Its just like smallmouth bass up in Canada if it’s invasive kill it and eat it
@johnwayne6647
@johnwayne6647 5 лет назад
Just look at snakeheads effect in Florida they have done more then enough research to determine they are destroying the ecosystem there
@nicks2581
@nicks2581 5 лет назад
@@johnwayne6647 just curious, what fish do you think are native to the rivers in VA that drain into the Chesapeake? I bet you could not name a single pure freshwater native fish that lives in the VA rivers.
@nicks2581
@nicks2581 5 лет назад
@@johnwayne6647 what research? Lets see it, because I have not found a single bit of research saying that the ecosystems of man made Florida canals, aka "ditches", have been harmed by snakeheads. You must be afraid that all those native fish like oscars, peacock bass, tilapia, clown fish, etc... will get eatten, right? Man, those snakeheads are going to put such a hurting on those poor native fish living in man made ditches.

@13:00 their skulls are as hard as those pliers.. the right way to do it is to slice the gill arches with a knife. Quickest and most humane way to do it, for those concerned.
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 6 лет назад
Slitting their gills and letting them bleed out is effective, but you calling it “quickest” is false. A sharp knife to the top of the head would be quickest, but I was scared of him freaking out and the knife finding my hand instead.
